This relationship includes creating top of the line phone skins - Such as their “Teardown” line which shows the inside of each selected device. However, after being tagged on twitter, Jerry and dbrand saw that rival company Casetify - who according to their CEO are worth almost 1 billion dollars - had released a very similar line of products. Deeper investigations began when dbrand spotted inside jokes from their products somehow appearing on Casetifys products. nd the similarities continued, a collection of 1’s referencing dbrand’s founding date. A string of text saying Robot, a reference to dbrand’s twitter support account and many more.
Following these discoveries, Dbrand and Jerry decided they’d had enough….

As far as i know this used to be a trick from map makers to see if someone was copying their maps. They put certain "easter eggs" into the map and if they showed up on other maps they knew the map was copied

It goes even deeper actually. Mapmakers could see which other makers were stealing their work by implementing what’s known as a “trap street” into their map. That way, only the other thieves maps would come out with the stolen/improperly made product.

The best thing about this is how dbrand and Jerry showed a master class in ensuring what I'd like to call "watermark IRL" to protect their IP
DBrand and Jerry Rig Everything spent a lot of manhours to get the skin as accurate as possible and also added personal touch like his famous line which is in this video among others and Casetify just right clicked and printed that in there line of phone skins without permission and since those designs are property of Dbrand they are rightfully owed compensation thus the lawsuit.Hope this clarifies some doubts.
Its not that they were owed compensation that they didnt recieve, debrand straight up stole from them. Thats not just compensation for their product being used, thats compensation for debrand being scamming fucking thieves

Not to mention you could clearly see how they butchered those details as well. The texture on the casetify ones ruin the quality of the print and it’s now grainy. Didn’t even put in the effort, it’s literally like they took an empty case and printed onto it directly.

Inside jokes are a great way of fingerprinting your photos for this concept, cause the actual internals would presumably be identical (maybe some serial numbers but maybe not) but the actual photography is still copyright protected, it’s a bit like putting trap streets in a map

I suggest watching the original video that the short comes from. The artwork that Jerryrigeverything and dbrand use isn't of the internals exactly. Many parts are removed, redesigned, altered and positioned differently for a more aesthetic look. Fluorishments are added such as the hidden Easter eggs for fun. The images used by dbrand for their cases is their artist rendition of the internals and is perfectly copyrightible. The images used by Casetify for their cases were proven to be screenshots taken from the product page of dbrands store and then resized to fit their cases which is blatant stealing.
That’s like copying someone’s homework and putting their name on it
