- 'The Book of Love' was written by Stephin Merritt of The Magnetic Fields and features on Peter's album 'Scratch My Back'.
The 'Scratch My Back' album, released in 2010, was conceived as a songwriters exchange project where Peter covered some of his favourite songs and in return the artists he chose would then cover one of his songs. The reciprocal album 'And I'll Scratch Yours' was released in 2013.
This version of 'The Book of Love' was arranged by Nick Ingman with Peter Gabriel and Will Gregory and features the vocals of Melanie Gabriel.

I love my wife so much, this song makes me think of her. I have surgery for Stage 3 Colon Cancer in a week and a half and sometimes I can see me getting over it and living til I am old with her... But other times, I wonder if I don't have long left. When I hear this song though, it makes me feel so lucky to have her next to me.
Love is the greatest motivator.

I listened to this wonderful song this morning at my bed radio at 05.11. Eighty years ago it was D-Day. So many young people gave their highest sacrifice for our liberation and freedom at the beaches and hills of Normandy. Their book of love was closed far too early. We can't be grateful enough to them.
Their love of freedom was greater than their fear of death. "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends."

Everyone connects this song to their spouses and partners. But for some reason it reminds me of my late grandpa, he died this past April and this song really makes me think of him, not sure why. He was like a father to me. I think that’s why this song reminds me of him. We weren’t blood related because my grandma got remarried but we were very close, but still not 100% certain why this song reminds me of him :/

The same thing happens to me. I think it's not only a love songs for couples. It's wider. It speaks about facts and figures, daily actions, charts, and so on. Maybe love is not a plain and simple building, it is more complex and needs a lot of engagement. If you do whatever you do with love, you have the best results and even though it may be sometimes boring, it's full of flowers and other mysterious things. During the pandemic, my girlfriend and I were living together and we would sing karaoke every night, and this song was one of our frequent "go to" songs. We were apart from May of 22 until Feb of 23, and then we broke up again November of 23, but we still spend time together. Yep, especially because what is Love without Wisdom or Wisdom without Love. You can Love foolishly and/or too easily which often leads to bad or at least empty relationships. You can be too Wisdom focused which can lead to excessive Logic which then leads to an empty Life. Therefore, you need both together for the best existence. You still need to be open to Love & Companionship yet temper it with Wisdom to prevent Foolish Loves/Relationships. Just like you need the Wisdom to understand that importance.

This song is melancholic for me. I discovered it in the aftermath of a horrible break up, that left me emotionally scarred and unable to find love again to this day. It was also around the time i discovered mushrooms, so there's a strange sadness and beauty associated with this song in my psyche, and for some reason i keep coming back.
Sorry for asking but did the pain of your break up ease? I am just the imprint of the person I was. I cannot derive real joy or pleasure from anything yet. I'm trying to stay busy but nothing really helps.

This song is like a "graduation" song to me when I left Sydney, Australia 12 years ago after I had completes my masters and my intern job there...
Right at the start of my course, I had a breakup, and then did some crazy and some regretable stuff in response to my breakup. All those while, I had always asked... Would I evenutally find love again or relationship... Then eventually I found a girl whom I saw as a friend whom I can learn and grow from and I really liked hanging out with her, but eventually I fell for her (spolier alert.. She liked me earlier)..
Listening to this song reminds me of the happy memories and feelings I had in Sydney, and the song reminds me me that those sad and frustrating moments makes you appreciate happy memories more and helps me take a step back and enjoy all of the happy memories that I had gained.
