In my 32 years working as a stormwater engineer for a local county government, it never ceased to amaze me how few contractors knew how to properly address runoff issues. No common sense. You guys appear to do it right.
👍🏻
👍
The befores are great but the afters are the cherry-on-top! Nice job, Shawn and GCF crew!
Thank you John!
RONALD!
What a great guy. Thanks for sharing your take on the job.
Shawn you're the best. This video has everything; French drains, catch basin discussed and discarded, gutters caught, piping into existing working drain pipes, new swale. Mystery solved on the water infiltration of the awning at the wall. I was hoping for footage on the swale working but at least you mentioned it at the end saying you forgot to film it. That was enough to satisfy me on the swale.
I would have liked to see the berm and swale in the rain too. Nice video!
Ditto
Wished to have seen how the water was flowing up on the hill after you worked on it
I know. I completely forgot to go up there!
Shawn...Jeremy and Ronald are the best. Please take care of them...Also, Ronald's outro after initial job completion was spot on. Well spoken, well explained and to the point. He might have to start his own YT channel. He is full of knowledge...
I think so too. They are my biggest asset for sure. I thought Ronald did a great job too. I just gave him the camera and asked if he wanted to go talk about the job. Talent.
@@GCFDI think you should let Ronald do that more often. Just to switch things up a bit 😊
Hindsight is 50/50........😂😂😂 That's what happens when you're working too hard.....
Haha, came here looking for this 🤣
I was expecting a "corrigated pipe is the best always use it" vid that ends with april fools

I was hoping to see the flow at the top of the hill, to see the water flowing down the fenceline.
Awespme video Shawn, good to see you went back 2x.
How did the swale work out? Any footage on that?
The swale is working well.
How did the swell work out?
It worked out well but I forgot to get any footage.

Yeah i mentioned the high voltage im ny comment, was looking for somebody else to mention it, i guess they are not fooling around.
What hit the window of the small bucket cart? Also, having 1/3rd of your fan base watch the video within the first 24h is pretty good, no?
I think the safety arm is what hit the glass. Yes! I'm hoping my channel keeps growing and viewers are enjoying my stuff.
Excellent job!! You make drainage look fun!
Haha thank you!
As always great solutions to bad problems. It seems to have been a long time since you used a french drain!
Yes that's exactly right Steve! French drains are used with non-point water and I try to identify the water and attack at the source. Here we don't use FDs very often since we have clay too.
You should have at least 1 million followers because a lot of folks could learn a lot from you and your team. Best drainage channel on line by far. Keep up the great work 👌🇦🇺🍺
Thank you J! I wish I had more followers for sure!
Wonder if surrounding that whole patio with a french drain wouldn't serve 2 purposes... One gather all that surface water and two would really help the look and utility of the patio...
All I ever want from anyone who I might hire for whatever it is that I'm wanting them to help me with, is that they care about their craft and do their very best. You guys always do your due diligence and give a more than honest effort to solve problems. Thanks for caring and having pride in what you accept money for, from your clients. It's a lost art these days....👍
Great job. They couldn't have picked a worse site for that place unless they built it underwater, I saw at least one door surrounded by sandbags.
They have had ongoing problems but now they don't have to worry about the break area!
That leaf-blower is the mvp at the end
For sure! I brought the big boy when I went back out there.
Where is the exit point for the water ? The pipe going in/under the concrete slab ? Where does that drain to? Great work as always guys. I love watching your content.
I'm not sure where it drains out but the property manager had it jetted and inspected. 👍
A plumbing nightmare fixed a drainman's dream. 👍
Good teamwork and practical solutions for existing problems .your follow up and visiting the site to see how well the implementation was is vital for any trade person caring about what he do.pluse highlighting the extra problem to the customer is important as well to gain more trust and more business in the future. Job well done, and good luck. 👍will
Whats with the electric fence? I've never seen one of those in a commercial area lol
That must be a corrugated pipe factory!
@@GCFD Protect and support that crap at any cost....
Shawn, as a fellow drainage contractor myself, I’m not surprised at all by the concoction another “drainage contractor” came up with. I run into some of same issues you do with other “professionals”. I’m all about educating my prospects and I always express my concerns with corrugated.
I take pride in my work, as your fellow follows know, so do you; which is why the both of us are so good at solving drainage issues. Heck, our schedules clearly show that!
From one contractor to the next, thank you for doing things top tier!
With blessings, Logan Gaskins
You left a black corrugated pipe and buried it, not knowing it it was active or not.
Either way, it'll drain into my gravel bed and captured by the french drain. 👍👍
Why not use a camera to scope where the tube goes?
Apparently the company hired the jetting and it was flowing. I wasn't too worried about where it came out after they said it was good to go. I knew I would be adding a lot of water to it.
True. Just surprised because I feel like you would want to know where it’s going and if it’s ok for yourself checking it out. But if your good with the other company them I’m good with it
I have to say I was disappointed in this one. The mix of perforated pipe connected to solid goes against all that I have learned about drainage. If it fixed the area, that’s good, but there is a whole lot more going on there given sandbags at the door, etc. It seems to me you were given a budget to fix one spot, when in all actuality, the whole issue of the water behind the entire building should have been addressed. I commend you for keeping the water off of the porch, but in keeping a good reputation, would it have been better to pass on the bandaid approach and bid a complete overhaul of the system ?
Perforated pipe into solid is the correct way to do it. Solid into perforated is what to avoid. The water on the side of the building is not doing any damage, although it is there during the rain. Because of this, that water was not an issue. We focused on the water that was shutting down production and got it resolved. I don't think this was a bandaid (i.e. a temporary fix).
The swale and berm will stop most of the water. The perforations will pickup ground water and direct it to the solid pipe.
It is also important to show us where that drain pipe goes...Maybe it will make another area flood?
They had the pipe jetted and said it was good. I'm not sure where it drained..
Curious as to what your strategy would have been if drain pipe under slab was not there ?
Awesome video Shawn and Co. -- Loved hearing Ronald do a wrap up too !
I REALLY admire how you were able to adjust your plan on the fly and go with a FD instead of the basin. It's a mark of true professionalism, experience, and integrity to make the best decision for the client. -- The rain follow ups are the best. Thanks for a great video --
And the 6" fittings we not glued because there are a LOT of lazy workers out there who are totally happy with mediocre....
Cheers,
Cujo
Nice one w some crazy 'custom angles, Another bloomin shame on that failed workmanship leaving Not Only the pipe dis-connected as well as unglued, Yeah i was going to say check the gutters and sure enough the whole top was covered.....Got to thinking 'i hope they closed up the box truck..Dont need some idiot's vandalizing or running off w the goods while not in view... Edit : I suppose the neighbor is not joking around w that high voltage fence !! The Twinkie factory comment below was classic on that.
The guys are very good at closing up the box truck (Boxie) when we're away from it. So far I haven't had any issues. 👍
Shawn - I reviewed all of your previous french drain videos and you didn't use fabric . . . I just completed my install of a french drain without fabric this weekend . . . have you changed your mind about using fabric for french drains?
If you have sandy soils or subsurface water you want to use fabric.
What about the flashing at the roof where it's seeping..?? 😂😂
Once I realized the organic matter was holding the water I realized the flashing was not needed.
38:25 Is that corrugated pipe from the existing catch basins along the building closer to the parking lot? I'm guessing the patio isn't original to the building and they cut that pipe when it was installed. They reworked PVC pipe but ignored the corrugated. This is probably why they still have a problem at 59:38.
Whatever that corrugated is doing it is better off now draining into our French drain. 👍👍
Something tells me that when you're cranking along in that Volvo digger thingie, life is good. Yes? Looks like so much fun, Shawn. Hard work, but there are the happy elements. Love it!! 🤗🤗Job well done. ❣❣❣
For sure Sheena! There is a lot going on right now with me with jobs and a scuba trip coming up. I'm trying to catch up on videos!
It's never a bad thing to have too much gravel...if you don't use it on this job, you'll use it on the next one or the one after that...
It's not like gravel has an expiry date and goes bad after all...
😄😁😆😅😂🤣
I was thinking that the entire time I had to go back to the quarry and back to the job. Oh well!
Good job - amazing what experience, common sense, and 100k dollars in equipment can do!
Do catch basins end up holding stagnant water? I'm always too aware of mosquito production areas. ;)
We drill weep holes in our CBs so any residual water can eventually drain out.
None of my neighbors know where their outfalls are. I just have corrugated pipes above ground
I always try to make my outfalls obvious and to look deliberate. That way they can be maintained.
Can you cover the gravel with any kind of top coat ? mulch maybe ?or would that just end up clogging the pipes ?
Yes anything you cover the gravel with will work to clog it. I sometimes top with decorative gravel, which is fine.
It may be an optical illusion, but it looks like your French drain is lower than the solid pipe. Would the water from the solid pipe not make its way to the French drain instead of the other way?
The FD should be a little higher than the solid pipe 👍
Maaaan i wanted to see how the barrier up by the neighboor did during the rain!
I can't believe I forgot about it up there!

Interesting to see the work of others...and then correcting their obvious mistakes. Maintaining the property is useful and adding another regular assignmrnt is always good for the team. Cheers for another problem and solution.
Thank you Laurie!
Poor camera got hit in the face 😄
On the fittings not being glued, my guess is just laziness and not caring about doin the job correctly!!. Love binge watching the videos Great content GCF crew...
Where does all the water that ends up in the gravel area drain to?
I was thinking the same.i know they connected them. But we always Run Gutter drains in separate Lines To keep the water Contained and not into our french Drains.i know using Y connectors helps.but i still like Keeping gutter down spouts into their own Run off lines
You should have done a caulking high quality sealer between the awning and the brick on the wall along the seems to stop water from ever backing into the seams between the awning and the bricks
I was prepared to do that but they wanted to see if it was needed. So far not needed.
Good video but you bumped it with the bucket. Think that knocked it out?
It's possible. I'm glad it wasn't glued because we could get right into that 6" with glued fittings.
More Ronald videos
Sean I appreciate all the hard work you guys put in on the site work front/video editing front so that homeowners like myself can learn to protect our investment. You and FDM have helped me immensely, I understand you two have opposing views on corrugated pipe but your combined wealth of information has allowed me to put together a system that works great for me. Thanks a ton!

I’ve been doing all my drainage jobs by shoveling and not using trencher/excavator. Bc I’m afraid of hitting lines even thou I call 811.
I know calling private locators are expensive. So how do you overcome the fear and use trencher bc I want to be more efficient
This is a fantastic project. However, I'm going to disagree on a few points. I would have preferred to lay the pipe on the fabric, then fill up any gaps with gravel, that way, the perforated pipe would capture as much of the water as possible. But going further, instead of using fabric, I would cover the dig out with a layer of clay. And I thought the pipe with the perforated holes would work better if the holes were aligned to the horizontal of the water level and then cover the whole thing with gravel.
I'd love a video just explaining that blue glue you use.
It's oatey Rain-r-shine. Primer + glue in one for use in wet environments. We like it.
For French drains, do you find solid pvc perforated pipe better than corrugated perforated pipe? I'm looking to put a French drain to catch ground run off with a solid pipe under it for gutters to run into but was curious if one type pipe is better?
People still out there filming clips with a potato
Haha It was still better than no footage?
This should be shown in middle school and high school. I think i would have chosen a different career path. I absolutely love watching water drainage problems get solved and getting paid to do it would be sweet. I wish i had a skiddy!
Thank you Joshua! Spread the word that water flows downhill! haha
I love watching your process. Also, they really need to reseal that roof where it meets the bricks. As far as keeping the roof clean, good call on requesting to clean that roof 2 or 3 times per year.
Probably never "was" sealed. Lotta water can come down a wall and get behind that. Probably wasn't deemed important to get a great seal there. Obviously we see it is . :)
Great job and great video Sean. Couldn't help but notice the new truck. Did I miss a video on it or is there a video coming?
Nice work again. That property manager needs to do a little more managing of the property. Can't even blow some leafs off the roof?? Come on man!
The wall that goes down to where you brew the leafs of. Check out the stripes on that wall. Perhaps a check on that roof and possible clean outs up there on the top roof could be the cause to why those stripes exist in the first place?
What is the blue stuff used to fit the pipes together? Why don't you use the primer and cement like interior piping?
What was the reason for bedding the French drain in gravel.? In previous videos, you have said to make it the lowest point in the trench and to be in contact with the hard ground, not floating on gravel, that would allow for residual water to be beneath it
I watched, the roof leaks at the brick wall. I would have ran more PVC with holes in it out from the padio. You need to stone te outher side, of the padio. Did the swal work?
Any time I have a question of what's flowing in what direction, tracer dye.
😂😂😂😂 wtf
Shawn Who is that guy? What did you do to Ronald?
👍
I would have put a French drain on the side with the smaller downspouts in addition to catching the downspouts in the solid pipe
W H E R E. OO WHERE
You gonna send the water 🌊 ..🤷♂️🤷♂️❓❓🤔🤔
The biggest problem falls back on the biulding contractor. They set the grade of slab way to low. This is why I hate contractors. I set all my own grade before they do any work. And check it as they set forms. The whole biulding to low. Years ago I had a contractor do my 1st shop. Water ran in the doors. Main grade was 3" lower then land grade. Wouldn't fix it. That were I learned not to trust any
Geez how many skid steers do u got?
Hey Jacob, 3.5. I started with the mini bobcat MT85. Then I wanted a gigantic skid for land clearing and got that monster volvo mct125. It's huge so I was looking for a smaller one and found my mustang RT175. That was still too big and I started looking for the smallest track unit I could find and ended up with a Bobcat T450. All were bought from CL or marketplace.
21:30 maybe all pipes are not glued
Another great job love the way you make sure customer gets there money’s were

Why do you say that? We solved the flooded building problem 100%
how much money did the previous company really save on glue vs reputation
13:45 you need to pick up that leaf and lick it, it will tell you where the water is flowing. ive seen similar in movies lol

Hahah! The proof is really in the rain. Either the flooding is solved or it's not. I can't fake these results!
Super fine work, Sean.
what did I think about that pipe job? Lazy, cheap & lack of integrity. I mean, at the time, was anyone really going to go out and dig up their work to examine if they glued all the fittings? That's when you have to trust the word of the contractor that they're going to deliver that industry standard, not get over on you to save a few bucks on glue.
That's why I really like your channel. You have integrity. So do Ronald & Jeremy. The proof is in every video you post. I know I've learned a lot from you--and am about to talk to my contractor nephew about some drainage/foundation issues he needs to look at on a piece of property he owns. At least I feel more confident speaking the construction language. Thanks!
I'm glad you've found so much value in my channel!
19:50 You have the tracks on your mini-excavator pointed the wrong way...
The blade should always be on the opposite side of the machine to where you're digging so it can act to counter the boom's lifting action on the machine as it forces the bucket into the ground...
the final drives are on opposite the blade on this machine. 👍
Did you seal that corrugated pipe inside the french drain?
If they really need to know where the 6 inch line you tapped into dumps out, have a plumber run his camera down it and use the locator wand to track it's progress through the pipe...
As for the doors you passed during the first rain sequence that are sandbagged around, I think at some point, you may need to cut a new swale the length of the building with a french drain running right down the middle to grab all the water coming down off the hill before it hits the building and you can see how the downspouts have been caught (and check to see if their joints were glued or not) and run and have the french drain pipe parallel them to wherever they go...
The remaining water along the back is not causing a problem right now, although it's not being managed very well. We may be back out there if they decided to address that water. At the moment they are thrilled the break area is good now.
I like that you always go back and do the updates.
Well you asked why those fittings were include because they weren't plumbers. They were just people doing it and didn't know any better or they ran out of glue. No that was a good job. It did the trick and the roof. Yeah getting the crap off the roof for sure and as you're walking up in the rain those catch bases that were on the side of the building. Maybe get a little job out of that by cleaning those catch basins at a couple of times a year cuz they may be for leaves and stuff and holding the water back. Just a thought but other than that it was a great job. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Great ideas! I figured they ran out of glue and didn't want to walk all the way back to the truck.
