- This walk-out basement was flooding when it rained. We went in and identified the issues to solve them! Now, there's no more flooding as we watch the problem water flowing away!

As soon as the video started and you mentioned that the homeowner only wanted to catch the gutters, I thought to myself that this needs a belt and braces approach. I’m glad she opted for you to put the dirt against the property in the end. Nice job Shawn.

I can’t agree more that most home owners will accept almost any compromise to keep water out of their house. It happened to me. Life is more enjoyable when the prediction of needed rain no longer causes stress and anxiety. Nice job to Shawn and crew. 👌

it's so great that you're educating your customer about what it should do, rather than just telling them you've fixed their problems.
when you hire new guys, ask them if they watched your videos they will learn your tips and tricks of how to use the shovel to tighten the pipes, etc....he seems like a great guy. you have a awesome team...

I think people underestimate how much surface area a wall represents. Every rain drop that hits that wall has only a single path of escape: down.

Maybe next time you can run the gardenhose test before waiting for the heavy rain, just as a preemtive measure especially when you suspected the grade to be a problem from the very beginning.

Thank you Allan! This was an interesting one for sure. I think clear expectations and communication with the homeowner was the ticket on this one. We both understood that they didn't want to spend extra money unless it was needed and we were going in with phase one and then reevaluating.
Hi you did a great job educating the client. The video she made was very clear and discussed the issues almost as well as you do. The client now knows what was happening, what was needed to fix it, and that her money was being well spent. I think the 2 phase approach was great. I knew (only from watching your videos) that the negative grade on the foundation wouldn't hold up in a heavy rain, but you patiently divided the job so the homeowner was completely satisfied after performing the garden hose test that she was doing the right thing and the extra money was going to a good cause.
Well said....Yes part of my comment would have been what you said here, That 2nd "phase" is the whole factor....And as shawn said the process shows the concern they had and then the hose test really made it, watching that in action as it happens etc etc... A Lot of people dont realize ( and just dont know ) grading effects everything...
I liked it when you said that drain pipe looked like crap. I knew you wouldn't leave it like that. I wish I could find contractors with your, I cannot think of the right word or words to use. I know, you give a damn. Where I live it is usually hit or miss with miss being quite often.
Thank you! We do it because we enjoy a job well done. Ask the contractors you like if they know anyone. A concrete guy and an HVAC guy I work with have no online presence and work only by word-of-mouth.

I definitely would agree to slope dirt from the foundation walls outward toward the yard. Allowing standing water right next to the foundation walls is a no no., unless you like wet basement floors. Make sure your gutters drain away from the house and do not contribute water next to the foundation. I live near Tampa and we allow roof rain water to dump right next to the foundation because it is all sand here and the water drains straight down below the house foundation...to never be seen again. Alot of people do not even have roof gutters! Blue Sky's.

I moved into my new house it has quite bad damp issues, thanks to watching 30+ hours of this channel I've located and mitigated most of the issues myself, mostly it was poor drain pipe maintenance and questionable construction decisions.
Well done Shawn. A lot of armchair "experts" in the comments today. I like how you approached this problem. Even though you suspected there was more to the water issue than just the gutters, you did the gutters first so the homeowner could see that while the gutter fix helped, it wasn't the major issue causing the flooding.
I am open to the experts and their thoughts but it's hard to fully understand what's going on from just a video. I try to bring you along, but it is still just a video.

Be careful looks like your mini bobcat is rolling down hill. Great job as usual.
You can replace a fence any day. You can't replace a slab everday. I like that you used the sewer/waste pipe for drainage, na dthe plumber could replace that easily then cement the new installation. Great approach, attack gutters first, wait and watch for grading, plus you mentioned it. The foundation waterproffing exopsed a huge nono.
I liked you using a full dirt bucket to campact with and raised up getting more compaction.
using what you had left to fill the other side and the plant bed, saves you a return trip.
Also distributing the mulch thin to cover and look good, but with the clay waterprooofing below does the job. Roger cook would be proud.

Also use a sealant to seal up the lines into the house and the grade so close to the windows is not ok if the area is within snow zones. But to seal that area is mostly inpatient as well as your bringing up the grade higher than the sealant that should be on the cement bricks and you should have as well have applied sealant and protection from your now Dirt and fill directly against the not sealed cement bricks and mortar

Another great job Shawn! and you did a superior job packing that clay/dirt, because when the homeowner started spraying the hose on it, i was cringing, expecting it to start lightly washing away the dirt, but it didn't budge, the water just rolled off CLEAR... that was a great packing job, that will last them many years.

I as a Master Plumber Pipe fitter for over 47 years. I would have installed perforated pipe all along the foundation to help with any water coming from the rain itself coming up to the foundation from a negative grade and not moving or doing something with the HVAC outside unit hurts to see at least put some berms and some type of something to channel water away from and any water flow down along the house twords the AC unit and a berm at the gate as well. But yes I agree with talking with a customer with problems and addressing all possibilities before the start of a job in writing. Nice job and looking forward to seeing more videos . Ps I never laughed so hard as the job with the dive and the cement pipe was bigger than you thought!!!! Or assume was just funny seeing the same things I had been through in my career. I was interested to see that you (or the property owner) went for the structural drainage system first instead of slamming some clay up against the foundation in place where the grade had been scoured away over time. In terms of your time and materials it had to be considerably more expensive. I'm glad they went with the full package but that was unexpected.

That was really interesting. The homeowners are quite happy with you. She wasn't taking any chances but I don't blame her. She checked for herself to make sure that it was fine and when she did she was happy and that's all that counts. I guess one more thing to make a suggestion for you. Sean, you're working around that gas meter and up to the wing lock. There's a wire there if you bury that wire the locator can't locate the service without that wire so just a little reminder in the future if you can bring them up above the grade it'd be greatly appreciated. By the locators I know cuz I located for 35 years so just a little thing but other than that great video yeah and that valve there but they call it a wing lock. At least they do up here. 👍👍🙂🇨🇦
Real nice... showing it in 'action as it happens for the customer etc etc makes all the difference. Except for any other internal damages caused luckily it was contained within that area & could have been much worse.

As always you identified the problems and offered the solutions. It was great that you offered a two phase approach. It would have been great if phase 1 worked but I think you knew that phase 2 would probably be needed to correct the issue. I love seeing the follow-up videos. It is amazing how well the clay dirt works to prevent the water infiltration, which is the exact reason not to infiltrate run-off into the clay soils via the perforated corrugated pipes.

1 of the cables in the ground was maybe electric for the outbuilding? doorbell connected to house and outbuilding? People do connect their doorbells to outbuildings if they spend a lot of time in them,.

I never get over how many times I see how low the Houses are laid in the first place . Builders totally ignore the flow of the land .
Modern builders just don't seem to come up to the old standards. I'm living in a 100-year-old house that came out of a Sears kit.
Then again, it could be a similar issue to the "old furniture" argument: "Old furniture is so much more sturdy than the modern stuff." "No, it just seems that way because the old furniture that wasn't sturdy just wore out and was thrown away, while the well-built furniture stood the test of time!"

Love the work you guys do. I have a question that might save you some money in operational costs. Have you guys considered PVC welding applications and approaches? Many twists and turns can be produced with a propane heater application.
And there is absolutely nothing whatsoever stopping the Home Owner from pulling out that fence section in a month or 2 and reinstalling it to the new Grade with proper concrete footings and base to prevent early rotting...
MUCH cheaper (probably) than having to replace the entire thing since the existing wood can be reused with the possible exception of the posts...easier and cheaper to install new posts and hang the old panels from them than have to replace the posts AND build new panels to hang on them...

Being the bug guy that you are what are your thoughts on covering up weep holes in the brick with new grading. I imagine you did here in a few places. I've always been told to not because it just gives termites and other pests and one way track into the building. I have grading issues at my home and would love to pack dirt up against the brick but im limited in the height I can go due to the first course of brick on slab. Termites being my main concern obviously.

We estimate the length of pipe, the accessibility of the location, of the work area, etc. Materials costs can vary widely depending on the market.
Could have raised the unit several inches that is why it's piped in flexible connections.
I assume they replaced that pipe section where they drilled the holes into it? That is the bathroom sewer line correct? Smell must be nice in that basement.

I know (and share) your opinion of corrugated pipe, but curious if you have a take on French Drain Man's "High Octane" pipe? My opinion is nothing is superior to a solvent welded Schedule 40 or SDR-35 system, but curious if you have any thoughts about his stuff?
I stopped listening to his ideas when he suggested that corrugated ribs create turbulence in the pipe. He doesn't really understand how water flows downhill, frictional resistance, sedimentation, etc. I don't want to badmouth him because I don't know his local soil conditions. I don't see how PVC could be improved upon when it comes to flushing debris and carrying water.

Aren't you ever worried about covering up the weep hole on those brick foundations. It looks like there is a weep hole when your talking about the gas meter it looks like weep holes on foundation?
I'm not a professional like you but I always was told that 4'' minimum of the slab foundation must be exposed. So to slope away from the house, the existing slope would have to be tiered with retaining walls. Thoughts?
Would it help to slope a piece of plastic on the perimeter of the area just before you pile up dirt on top?
I don't like to do that because it creates a layer between the old and new dirt. The two dirts will eventually fuse together and accomplish the same thing the plastic would. 👍
Whats your take on interior fix only companies? I have a leaky basement and everyone ive talked to only wants to do water capturing inside my home. I've told them I would rather have an exterior solution like what you do but nobody wants to do it.

What do you think of sdr35 and clean out on downspout? I know you use sch 40 which is more expensive and don’t use clean outs
I'm guessing most, if not all, of the subsoil you use is your own that you keep from other jobs? I haven't looked too hard yet in Indiana, but it seems typical landscape and outdoor stores only sell topsoil and I need some clay!
In several of the places I've lived in the past (not including Indiana) there are businesses dedicated to selling dirt: different kinds of dirt, like ordinary topsoil or garden soil, or even things like mulch and crushed rock. If you've got one in your area, they should be able to get you hooked up.
Question, you preach about making sure you go below the frost line, but in this video, I see you were kind of shallow and not below the frost line, why is that?
Any ideas what is causing the porch to separate from the house as 47:15 .. house or porch subsiding ?
How many down spouts can you run into a 4" pipe?
It’s more about square footage of roof area and anticipated maximum inches per hour of rain. So it depends, but short answer is a 4” pipe can take a lot of water!
Like Jackson said above. Plus you want to consider how much slope and how long the pipe run is after catching the gutters. I've done up to five downspouts and the water just blasts out of the pipe!
Is it standard in the USA to not have local government stormwater systems that homes connect to?
