    Big lesson learned about asking thy neighbors. It took me trial and error and years to work up the courage to ask my neighbor if I could discharge runoff via a pipe to a creek behind his backyard because my yard is a low point surrounded by other properties. He understood my situation and was cool with it.

    Very interesting 2 part series. Carson is a champ for agreeing to show all the decisions made and carried out, and then corrected. I was thinking watching that 8" pipe going in what a lot of work it was and if the garage was higher and culverts cut it would be so much easier. Those points were addressed, and sometimes you have to go with your best estimate at the time. But a lot of water is a lot of water and it was great to see how it all came out after cutting those big ole culverts. A lot of issues besides water covered in this series and that's what sets you apart Shawn. I really appreciate the discussions of ethical behavior, how to work with a client, and how to work with a friend, what you have to think about, etc.

    One technique I use to get an almost perfect circular cut around PVC pipe is to wrap a sheet of A4, A3 or newspaper around the pipe with all edges meeting up along the paper edge. Then I just trace the edge of the paper with a black marker. Any imperfections in the cut can be hone back to the marker line using a grinder. I congratulate Carson for allowing honesty to shine through so that we all benefit from this endeavour.

    You must get tremendous rainfall where you’re working. I live in a reasonably dry part of Australia and we have to catch as much rain as possible to fill our big tanks for usage. Some properties are completely on rainfall only so these require huge poly tanks. Pretty much every house has a rain water tank.
    It’s so unusual to watch plumbing to remove water rather than storing it but I’m really enjoying watching your work. Well done. I’m learning a lot. 😊

For my personal not professional opinion - for that amount of water flow during storm catchbasin had no enough capacity, and I am not really sure any catchbasin will handle that river, so redirecting water before it goes toward building was the only correct solution. Thanks Carson, Shawn I loved that wrap up. We learn from our mistakes, unfortunately it usually takes making them to learn our lesson. Had Carson never learned this, his house build would be much worse. Also keep in mind Shawn is a drainage teacher, and his students may get things wrong sometimes, and that’s okay. 👍

      @GCFD  Місяць тому +2

      That's really how I'm looking at this. The most important thing is getting the house correct. If that took the garage flooding a couple times after we installed the drainage system, then it was well worth it. 👍

    Thanks Carson and Shawn for keeping it real. That is the main reason this channel is great in my opinion, as it is warts and all,

    Great to see part 2 Shawn - thank you.
    Carson has an amazing property over there and I’m glad he let you share the footage with us.
    Everyone learns from mistakes and successes and I hope this video shows us all things we didn’t know before or it backs up your methodology of capturing water in solid pipe and taking it far away.
    The garage looks well protected from the elements now - I look forward to seeing how the main house is protected.
    I think Ronald would’ve made light work of those 8” pipes but may have shared a few choice words off camera 😂😂

    You guys did a good job by telling your story for others to learn from this situation.
    Water is a powerful thing of Mother Nature it goes where it wants to go, that's why you always have to observe first wat it does

      That's what is scary to me. It's dealing with an unknown amount of water. This is why I always try to deal with water at the highest point (i.e. closest to the source). Instead of dealing with water at the bottom where the problem is.

    Really interesting video Shawn. Over the years I have learned and shared with others that if you're going to buy a house or piece of land go there in the worst of weather like a heavy downpour or after a big snow storm. See the worst conditions you'll have to deal with. I know real estate agents want to take you to show you on a bright sunny day in May and sell you on a rosy picture. That's much different than having to wade through a flooded driveway or backyard. Anyway, great video as usual Shawn the friendly banter is always fun to watch too.

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Місяць тому

      That is so true Paul. Often you can see the problem even if it's not raining with a little help from this channel. Many of my viewers say now they see drainage problems in potential houses.

    Honestly, I would have done the same as your friend here. Solving the problem on my property without bothering the neighbour, getting all the water in one big drainange system - I would even have thought the catch basin and piping would be more than enough even for heavy rains, too.

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Місяць тому

      I completely see the logic but I knew it wasn't going to work. The idea of a larger CB and larger pipe seems logical but it doesn't work in the end.

  • @bruno_pr

    Should have called post10 to film the unclogging of the catch basin. Great video Shawn!

  • @erik1514
    @erik1514 Місяць тому +2

    I had a very similar idea with a catch basin next to my foundation to catch surface water. I will have to do some rethinking as the heavy rain section has steered me away. Great video and and thanks Carson

    • @GCFD
      @GCFD  Місяць тому

      Erik - Try to address the water before it lands near the foundation. Is it gutter water or water from an uphill area? Try to address the water at the highest point (close to source). Best luck!

    He could of even put that ditch on his side of the Fence and as per Normal with Shaun, put Clay up against the side of the building into that ditch, No need for piping, just use Clay and angle the ditch.
