I've always said that the PSP was truly ahead of its time! In a pre-smartphone era, the only other major portable multi-media devices at the time were basically iPods and Zune's. For the PSP to be an entire portable gaming console, as well as being able to serve as a MP3 player, movie and video player, web browsing, and even backwards compat with PS1 titles was just amazing at the time.

Sony intended it to be the "Walkman of the 21st century". I think it's still my all time favourite PlayStation system. Back when I was in university, being able to listen to music or fire up a high quality 3D game between classes, on a single device that fit in my pocket, was a godsend.

      I own a ps3 too.
      But it lacks ps2 retrocompatibility.
Thats why in essence, PS2 was the best, it was fully retrocompatible, the most reliable dvd player (the most advance media at the time) and could do everything the ps1 could do.
When the ps2 arrived there was no reason at all to keep the ps1.

I remember trying remote play with the PSP and PS3, as well as doing it with the Vita and PS4. The PSP didn't work very well, like you said, and it was more novel then anything. I do remember things being better on the Vita, but I really haven't tried it recently to know how it is now. Honestly, this is one of the things that makes me excited about the Steam Deck, I am going to use that with Chiaki to remote play my PS4 with full controls and no janky back touch pad for L2/R2. I know you could set it elsewhere on the Vita, but using the back touch or touchscreen weren't great options any way it went. I don't have many games on my PS4, but I am looking forward to replaying the Uncharted series and Infamous: Second Son. The other games that I have on PS4, I also have on PC, so that's not a big draw for me otherwise, I just want to play a few exclusives that I don't want to take over the TV to play.

If I had to take a guess why some videos get blocked when you remote play, Sony and the rights holder of the video content might be hitting legal territory of "streaming" instead of a video download purchase. The license to Sony to sell it probabaly had language strictly saying it must be for download and playback, but streaming rights weren't sold with it.

Remote play was one of the factors that got me to pick up a PS3. But so few games ultimately supported it. I guess because of the slow 802.11b WiFi, and that the PSP only has a six button controller and a single analogue nub. The Vita kind of addressed this with its dual analogues, but having the L2/R2 and L3/R3 buttons mapped virtually to the touch pads just never felt right. I'm surprised it took as long as the Switch to get a major handheld with a full 10-button layout.

It's actually something I consider when deciding whither to buy a given title physically or digitally - if the game lends itself to rp I'm inclined to go digital so I don't have to worry about whether I left the correct disc in. Still keen for physical games though in general.

You forgot to mention the lack of a second analog stick. It would be impossible to play ps3 that require it (like with most) and it would make sense why ps1 was allowed since the controls were easily convertible .

I try to play my modded ps3 over remote play via vita but even with best video setting it is really fuzzy. Psp is clear but lacks the 2nd stick obviously.

@@dickmcbizz8736 You can improve the picture quality alot by changing the param.sfo of the game manually
you can also improve the connection stability and distance by using the router as a linking point rather than the ps3 itself

Most consumers do want to use remote Play just not cloud gaming.
There's very much a good use case for cloud gaming when it comes to things like GeForce now which should be treated like a online Cafe and not a platform

I don't think any handheld has ever fit its place so perfectly even though it easily could've been dismissed and considered ahead of its time. It was a badass powerful multimedia device with a huge video game, music, movies, and TV library that could all be purchased directly on the console. It was so intuitive to use any kid good at using a computer could have basically made it their on-demand offline boredom SNIPER. And that's not even considering the capabilities of CFW.

I remember using it ages ago. I patched the PS3 version of Persona 5 with a CFW to force it to use remote play and it worked!
It was so fun because the PSP didn't have all the buttons the game needed, but hey, still pretty cool that it was working tho

    1 free online
    2 fully backwards compatible
3 first console to have remote play. Btw we wouldn't be able to play ps5 anywhere with remote play if it weren't for PS3. I bet you if it weren't for ps3 remote play the switch and wii u probably wouldn't even be a thought

If you have Hen or Han on your ps3 you can play more games if you do some modifications with game file (ISO)
For example you can play Bioshock Infinite, Watch Dogs, Doom 3, Resident evil 4, Silent Hill downpour, Battlefield 4 and more
