I Played PS5 Games On Remote Play For A Week, Here's How It Went.

  • Nowadays there's so many ways to buy and play games, you've got your digital downloads, subscriptions, cloud gaming, and remote play! Remote Play has always been a neat feature, allowing you to remotely access and play your console. Sony went all-in on this back in the day with PS3 and PSP, then PS4 and PS Vita, and now: PS5 with phones, tablets, or PC's. Personally I've never cared much for using this, but I figured let me give it a go for a week straight. So here's how it went! (Now I want a McRib, which if you've watched the above, might make more sense).

Really dig these videos lately - the trophy hunting videos and this have been really entertaining. I do typically like videos which just bullet point the pros/cons of something like streaming but this, actually kinda brings us along for each experiment and gives a more practical view on how someone would be using this functionality. Additionally this sort of thing often doesn’t get talked about post-launch.

I’ve played a ton of South Park the fractured but whole through GeForce now recently while on breaks at work and honestly it’s been fantastic.
I’ve dabbled with it at home for fps games and through Ethernet on a fibre connection, it’s doable but less than ideal for sure. (A lot of my good fortune with GeForce now is due to the fact that I’m physically close to the Canadian east coast servers, Xbox cloud hasn’t been as kind to me unfortunately)

Honestly I used to be of the same opinion but , in anticipation of the portal, I tried playing via remote play on my Mac. I was pleasantly surprised and I was playing God of War Ragnarok too. I ended up beating a couple of bosses using it when all I really wanted was to finish a few sidequests. I still probably won't use it for twitchier games like COD multiplayer and rhythm games, but other games I would be completely fine playing through remote play.

I have been using remote play lately with MW2 and Ragnarok. My PS5 is in the bedroom and the wife doesn’t like it when I play into the wee hours at night when she’s trying to sleep.
So far, 10+ with the iPad Pro and a separate Dual Sense controller. I really can’t tell the difference between playing natively or remotely as long as I’m next to the router. I just installed Chiaki on my Steam Deck and I think it will be my go to setup going forward.

Awesome experiment for a video. I did want to put my 2 cents in that while I don't use it much there have been times where using remote play on PC has been awesome. When the living room TV is being used or if I'm wanting to hang out in Discord it's been a playable experience. I've even streamed it to my friends in Discord and it went fairly smooth. It's not a solution that'll beat just directly playing without stream services but I'm thankful to have it if I ever need the option.

I'm a big skeptic on remote play, and even with AX Wi-Fi it's just not quick enough for me at home. Also, on a 1000/50 internet connection I still haven't had luck with streaming it out of the home with low enough latency to be playable.
But one good use I've found is with an Android TV box hooked up to the bedroom TV. It's all wired up with ethernet so I can stream my PS5 games to another room from the console. It works pretty well.

I used remote play in a practical scenario recently. I traveled to my parents place and played NFS Unbound on my iPad Mini 5. I was very surprised with the responsiveness, while there was a noticeable change in input lag, it was nowhere near enough to actually disrupt my experience or reaction time in a single-player environment, Though I feel a multiplayer game would struggle with this and possible have more input lag by default. Another thing is make sure nothing is downloading while playing remote play, in hindsight this is obvious, but as I was playing I started downloading Spider-Man: Miles Morales and Cyberpunk 2077. The decrease in quality and increase in input lag was IMMENSE, and as soon as I paused both downloads it returned to an extremely playable state.

I quite like remote play for traveling. I often drive to my parents or on weekend trips with my motorcycle and then obviously don't want to take the big baby with me, but I'll always take my laptop anyway and then I just need the controller to be able to play. It obviously depends on the connection speed (my home network is good, WLAN at my parents is sometimes dicey) and I wouldn't want to play any super fast paced games on it, but for a lot of other games, where the occassional short dip in framerate isn't a problem (puzzlers, sims, turn-based, etc) , it's a really solid way to play while away from home.

Remote Play, when it works, is great for slower paced games like turn based rpgs or visual novels. The problem starts to be when the latency even on local connections starts to impact the experience. It is almost unplayable outside the local network unless you are on amazing internet.
I’ve also had the connection be really poor even on a local connection where every 5 seconds the video would drop 10 or so frames but the sound kept going. Makes everything unplayable

I love my backbone. Though - due to some minor latency, I generally use my backbone for games that don’t require too much timing. So, I use it for visual novels, some action games (got the platinum on Cult of the lamb all on the backbone). Button inputs feel almost precise with my home network connection.
If I were to use my a Bluetooth controller, I notice a lot more latency, so I just use the backbone, since it’s direct Input as opposed to Bluetooth (so it helps with diminishing input lag with it already being streamed)

I think the remote play is probably more intended for when you're home and don't have access to the TV. Or when you're traveling and have a good WIFI connection. I love when I'm into a game on my switch, and even if my wife wants to watch something on TV, I just switch to portable mode. I haven't done this yet for my PS5 games but seems like I could.

Your upload speed to outside your network was certainly holding you back. Did you mention if your Playstation was connected via ethernet or wireless because wire would help with latency. You were likely getting well over 300 upload and download while inside your home network because your app and PlayStation were connected directly inside the network and using the routers rated network speed which is different then the network speed the ISP provides.

I just bought the backbone for myself last month. I’m really enjoying it so far, but it’s certainly best for certain types of games more so than others. Maybe it’s just a matter of needing to get used to it more. I’ve been working on the 100% for god of war, and I find that it’s definitely harder to play with the backbone, but definitely not impossible. While I’m also playing final fantasy 7 remake, which has simpler controls and is much better suited for it. And then I’m also playing midnight suns which is perfect for the backbone since it’s not reliant on quick decisions.

I just think at this point in time where internet connection still is not reliable to play video games, it's more practical for Sony to make a mobile device like Steamdeck that can play PS4 and PS5 games directly (albeit at lower resolutions or frame rates perhaps) from installation. But Sony obviously doesn't care about that even though it can bring them opportunities to sell more digital games. Not a smart move in my opinion.

On android try PS Play it’s $7 and it’s better than the official Sony remote play app. I was close to getting a backbone but then I decided against it. PS Play gives me rumble and dualsense features via OTG wired connection on android. Plus I can change the light of the dualsense to whatever I want. Also a bunch of 3rd party controllers are supported on PS Play and there’s aspect ratio, you can fill the entire screen and remove those black bars with no real loss to important screen info. I know using a paid 3rd party app may put off some but it’s worth it yo…PS Play on android get it.

I don't know why you focused heavily on the obvious drawbacks to remote gaming. You spent forever talking about the screen size. That's pretty darn obvious that a bigger screen is going to be nicer. Then you talk about playing at McDonald's because you have to play your game and won't go home to your TV. Pretty positive any gamer who can go home to their TV will go home to their TV. This is useful for people traveling and that don't have an easy way to get back to their house. This review video could have been so helpful but instead of focusing on actual helpful review information from the experience you focus on obvious things. Clearly this video was made at the length it was so that you could collect revenue. Obviously the revenue was the focal point here and the content seems to be second. Probably won't ever watch another one of your videos again.
