Agree 100%! I never felt so involved in a movie. Never had such a visceral reaction. Masterpiece. So glad Joaquin finally got an Oscar (even though he doesn't like awards). And Hildur's score is absolutely phenomenal. This will be a classic.
Watching it in the theaters was so intense, it felt as if you were sitting in the same room as Arthur in every scene. the interview with his doctor, the bathroom scene, him contemplating suicide back stage... it almost felt intrusive
Fun fact.. Hildur Guðnadóttir, the composer of the incredible score in this film (she won the Oscar for it) wrote much of it from reading the script alone. The director played a recording of The Bathroom Dance song and Phoenix, with no further instructions just went completely into the character and improvised the whole scene on the spot.
Yes! Initially, the public bathroom scene was written as Arthur panicking and trying to figure out what his next move would be but Phoenix and Phillips realized it wasn't working. Phillips had just received the piece from Hildur Guðnadóttir that day and decided to play it and Phoenix improvised the dance. Movie magic.
That scene when he dances in the bathroom was improvised by Joaquin Phoenix. One of the most memorable scenes in this movie, representing the start of his change. The perfect actor for a caracter like this
I think you are correct that The Joker doesn’t actually have an origin story! Which is why it’s so cool that every time they make a new one, it’s a different version/take on it, and it’s cool to see what new “back story” they’ll give him!
I feel the same way. Even in The Dark knight you see how he changes his story to be relatable to the person he's telling it to. When talking to Gambol (who freaked out when he mentioned his mother) he makes the story about his dad beating his mother. When talking to Rachel (a woman he calls beautiful and works for the justice department) he makes it about his wife losing her beautiful appearance to being cut by gangsters. And here he tells a story to psychiatrists about how it's caused by mental issues.
@@AshleyGarcia-ck2ki I mean you're not incorrect, I feel like It's a yes and a no kinda. He does have an origin story, but it's just on how he became the Joker and that's it. We don't know his actual name, his actual backstory, his family, it's just he fell into a vat of acid and that's it.
All the writers of the various runs of any Batman comic were given the ok by DC to change the Joker origin story. At first it was just because they did not pay attention to continuity but it became a running thing with the Joker. At any one time there may be a number of different origin stories for the Joker that he tells. The writers see this as proving the fact that the Joker is not in control of his own mental capacity. You can never trust the Joker as a narrator.
It's a great film but so harrowing to watch. I've only been able to watch it twice - once in theaters and once on home media - because it's such a distressing movie. It manages to shine a light on how mental illness has historically been poorly addressed in society. People struggling with their mental health end up getting stigmatized and marginalized because mental illness is misunderstood and has often not been considered a "real" sickness deserving of the same kid of attention as physical illnesses. So the common response is to either ignore it, heavily over-medicate them, or lock them away in psych wards or institutions because they just don't wanna deal with the issue. It is particularly worse for those who are also impoverished, as they can fall victim to government-provided mental health services that are subject to insufficient funding and budgetary cuts. So people who truly need real help can't get it simply because they can't afford it, and people like Arthur Fleck can fall through the cracks and become a danger to themselves and others. The film just manages to frame these issues within the origin story of one of the most infamous villains in fiction.

Joaquin Phoenix really is one of the best actors around today. He puts in so much work with his performances and understands the characters he plays on a fundamental level.
Any interpretation of the Joker origin is valid because…there is no true origin story. I remember when this movie came out and when I was about to watch it with my friend my mom informed me that some people went crazy after watching this movie . And she told me to be careful and not get too into the movie. like the criminal in Japan that just shot a bunch of bullets on a train full of people on Halloween back in October of 2021 just because he was a huge fan of Joker so he decided to become like him. He even dressed up as Joker when he did it.
People don't go crazy because of a movie, them people have underlying issues and usually have been mentally corrupted at youth, probably suffer with certain issues and mental health was most likely already on the decline, movies, games, music do not make people violent, people make people violent. This movie is a beautiful display of the agony and pain people with mental health issues go through, it is quite possible said mentally unwell people could idealise it as themselves but again, that isn't because of the movie, those people were already unstable.
I love how this movie touches a lot on mental illness and society's indifference to those affected by it. It just goes to show that not treating the mentally ill with concern or any kind of compassion can cause a break in a person's psyche and create something similar to what Arthur became in the end, in this case, Joker

Joaquin Phoenix is someone who is such a good actor he hand picks his roles. And I ly does ones he can get passionate about. He had no idea who the joker was. He just read the script and said. This is an amazing role. His brother was the real actor out of the two. But he died early on from a drug overdose. The Graphic novel "The Killing Joke" written by Alan More, and is arguably considered the official back story of the Joker. I think this has taken bits of influences from different Graphic novels/comics, "The Killing Joke" being one of them.
I've seen a lot of movies in my time, and there are very few that manage to make me feel a kind of unease and almost physical discomfort the way this one does. And absolutely fantastic movie, but definitely a very difficult watch.
Have you seen any of the following? 1) We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011) 2) Single White Female (1992) 3) The Machinist (2004) 4) Elephant (2003) 5) American Psycho (2000) 6) At Close Range (1986) 7) Funny Games (1997) 8) Natural Born Killers (1994) 9) SE7EN (1995) 10) The Cell (2000) 11) One Hour Photo (2002)
From the way things are stated in the script, Arthur has music within him. It could very well be that all the music we hear in the film is also playing within his own head.
This movie is a masterpiece. I’m not a huge fan of DC characters outside of Aquaman and Wonderwoman but I really enjoy what they did with this character. Yeah, first time watching it is very difficult to figure out what’s real and what’s in his head sometimes. I think it’s representative of maladaptive daydreaming at its worst and most intense. He can’t handle reality so these daydreams are part of his escape from it. It’s unhealthy but it helped him deal with it to a certain extent.
In terms of comics the movie takes some inspiration from Batman: The Killing Joke, but it also takes inspiration from a lot of other movies and stories as well as the writers' own ideas.
That is the thing, even in the comics there's actually no canonical beginning of the Joker. It keeps changing but the main theme is based off of one bad day .. one bad day can make somebody into something they aren't. Other than that they keep telling us we're getting the origin of the Joker and they change it all the time it's because we'll never really get actual origin, so the movie plays right into it
I actually loved it. I am not big fan of Superhero movies, as they all look the same for me. But this was something different and i respect WB and DC for taking darker approach. What i like, is not really idea that whole movie might be in Joker's head, and nothing happened at all. Or that you don't know what's real and what's not. What i do like, however, portrayal of Wayne family. All we saw previously, was that he was a good father, good politician who wanted to help people. But all we saw was from Bruce perspective. Maybe he actually was same politician as all of them - corrupt and greedy
One theory says that the reason he looks so old is because he was recounting the past to the therapist that he kills at the end When he says she wouldn’t get the joke The joke is that his actions created the death of the Wayne’s, and that created Batman and Batman is the one who put them in Arkham So in a way, he’s only about 15 years older than Bruce He looks like he’s in his 40s because he’s recounting the story

Only Seb can laugh at one of the darkest movies ever made lmao. Love your energy bro.
Can you imagine seeing Patterson Batman beating this Joker to a bloody pulp rated r style. It's like thats what all the people who wanted Joaquin Joker in Reeves Batman movie want to see, which is proper demented : P
Joaquin Phoenix is really good is ‘Her’ I’d recommend watching it!
18:28
There are a lot of Joker's origin story in the comics and in the movies but none of them are canon
I watched this on my 21st birthday and what an amazingly uncomfortable birthday that was. This film is a masterpiece from the score to the cinematography. And of course the acting
Yep 100%, I watched it with a mate shortly after my 21st birthday and really enjoyed it.
As a comedy writer I really think I could have helped the Joker with his material. Knock, Knock. Who's there? Little boy Blue. Little boy Blue who? Michael Jackson.
Agreed, now that one would have even made Murray himself laugh
Man this movie is so perfect..
I really really liked your reaction!~
thanks again Seb for a nice watching together.
Don't know if you gonna see it, but I recommend 'Shutter Island' for you. It's gonna blow your mind. Personally my top-3 films of all time
YES you need to watch Gladiator too!
Seb, you have to watch the movie "Signs". It was this actor and mel gibson. Its also an alien movie. Masterpiece
This is the only movie I've ever been to the cinema to see twice.
I don't blame you, it's one of the best movie's of all time
Seb you MUST watch the Gladiator, but make sure you're watching the extended edition! There's a wonderful scene with Phoenix that was cut and that I'm sure will remind you of Joker.
3:18 yes his name is the ratcatcher he’s a Batman villain
Christian Bale's transformation from the the time between The Machinist and Batman Begins. Holy moly.
Yeah boo! Surprised it’s took you this long Seb! 👌🏼
This is literally my favorite movie of all time
@@The_Phantasm Don't you have literally anything better to do than to go to everyone's comment who enjoyed this movie and force your opinion down their throat? Like for real bruh relax
@@The_Phantasm it's called an opinion and to each his own, how would you feel about someone judging your for your favorite movie like you did
I love your reactions !! But since I'm not an English native speaker, it would really help me if you considered watching the movies with subtitles on... It would be awesome of you to do so !
If you want to see dedication to losing weight for a role check out Christian Bale in The Machinist, then immediately after that film he bulked up massively for Batman Begins, talk about dedication!
The Graphic novel "The Killing Joke" written by Alan More, and is arguably considered the official back story of the Joker. I think this has taken bits of influences from different Graphic novels/comics, "The Killing Joke" being one of them.
The movies Gladiator, The Master, and Her are fantastic films on their own but honestly worth watching for Phoenix’s performances alone.
I've seen a lot of movies in my time, and there are very few that manage to make me feel a kind of unease and almost physical discomfort the way this one does. And absolutely fantastic movie, but definitely a very difficult watch.
Have you seen any of the following?
1) We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011)
2) Single White Female (1992)
3) The Machinist (2004)
4) Elephant (2003)
5) American Psycho (2000)
6) At Close Range (1986)
7) Funny Games (1997)
8) Natural Born Killers (1994)
9) SE7EN (1995)
10) The Cell (2000)
11) One Hour Photo (2002)
From the way things are stated in the script, Arthur has music within him. It could very well be that all the music we hear in the film is also playing within his own head.
"Joker doesn't have any super powers." Neither does Batman lol
His laughing thing is a condition he has called Pseudobular Effect it’s due to traumatic brain injury.
Almost at 100K subscribers! You deserve it all dude. Always looking forward to your content. Keep up the good work!
Yes... the DC rat villain is called The Ratcatcher, he is basically the pied piper.
That is the thing, even in the comics there's actually no canonical beginning of the Joker. It keeps changing but the main theme is based off of one bad day .. one bad day can make somebody into something they aren't. Other than that they keep telling us we're getting the origin of the Joker and they change it all the time it's because we'll never really get actual origin, so the movie plays right into it
If you enjoyed Joaquins acting check out his Johnny Cash movie "Walk the Line" Its fantastic and i dont see any reaction channels doing it
Joaquin is an amazing actor! You should watch Her and The Master.
“Obviously, nobody deserves to get shot, but YEAH KILL EM “ 😂😂 Love ya Seb 😂
JOKER: “if I’m gOinG 2 haVe A bAcK storY, I’d pRefeR iT 2B multiPle cHoicE🤣HA🤪HA🤡HA🤣HA🤪HA🤡HA…🃏🔪HA”
my man waited all his life to watch every movie up to this point
If youve never senne The Gladiator, you have too see it. It it probobly the best film ever! He is fucking amazing in it!
You missed the bloody footprints in the final scene from the blood of the doctor he killed after he was arrested.
A masterpiece
@@The_Phantasm agreed. It was an ok movie but nowhere near a masterpiece.
one of the best actors of all time
Joaquin is amazing in her
One theory says that the reason he looks so old is because he was recounting the past to the therapist that he kills at the end
When he says she wouldn’t get the joke
The joke is that his actions created the death of the Wayne’s, and that created Batman and Batman is the one who put them in Arkham
So in a way, he’s only about 15 years older than Bruce
He looks like he’s in his 40s because he’s recounting the story
