TD42 Rebuild Part 1: Disassembly

  • Here's what I found when tearing down my TD42T.
    This engine is a bit of a mystery to me as I don't know the original vehicle it came out of. I have no information on KMs or age of the engine so a quick teardown was needed to inspect the engine and replace some leaky gaskets along the way.
    I found a few major issues such as a damaged crank nose and blocked oil pickup. This lead me to decide on a full rebuild, requiring a full teardown.
    Due to this, the disassembly order is a little strange as I only decided to teardown halfway through.
    I also found that the Pistons, Rods, Crank and Head were all turbo spec and looked to be replaced somewhat recently. The fuel pump was a 10mm with no boost compensator and the oil pump and squirters were the smaller style. The engine code on the block is TD42- - - - C, if there's any TD Gurus out there that can shed some light on what I've got it'd be great to hear some info.
    Hopefully this video is helpful to others looking to do the same or to see if its a job you can do yourself or if its best sent to a shop.

    Some great info here. Good to have this on UA-cam as DIY is becoming the only option for some owners.
    Thanks for taking the time to record, cut and post this.

    This is great, thankfully my TD is running just fine (That I can tell) but always thought if it needed a rebuild, could I do it myself? So far, this vid is helping me 1, understand whats going on there and 2, that its not "That" complicated to pull something down and build it back up
    Great stuff!

    Most factory fitted Turbo spec engines will have a number ending in a "T", but import engines, and crate motors will have other letters. Liners can be removed at home by running beads of weld to shrink them, then tap out. Installing new liners must be done without the use of nitrogen. The TD42 has a history of liners dropping later, and then blowing head gaskets, if the liners are not installed EXACTLY as Nissan designed. Suggest you have a read on the Patrol forum as to the methods required to install them and get the liner protrusion correct. Plenty of info on it, but it is amazing how often they get done incorrectly, only to have problems later.

    Absolutely fantastic video...concise and informative. The fact you bother naming all the parts and the size of socket/spanner required sets this video head and shoulders above the rest...On to the next one.

    great stuff, also did a TD into my zd s1-3. Pretty easy conversion and a world of difference esp going up hills etc. not running any crazy power but dont regret it.

      Hey mate got loads of parts turning up for the build so can’t put it together just yet but shouldn’t be too much longer before I can start building it. Got some other videos on the GU coming shortly though 👍🏻

    Any tips on removing and replacing the vac pump? I'm replacing the injector pump but there's one nut there I can't get to without removing the vac pump first

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  2 місяці тому

      Depends if the engine is in the car or not, makes it much easier if it’s out. I’m guessing the nut you can’t get to is the one between the block and the pump. If you have a few 1/4in extensions and a wobble drive it should work for you 👍🏻

      Hey mate, I found a donor GU in pretty rough shape to pull the motor from. Bought the whole car for $7500 and will make it worth it by pulling a few other bits from it that I need. Some TDs can go for between 5-10 grand for just the motor depending on what you get with it (turbo, fuel pump, etc).

    Are you replacing the Cylinder Liners for your rebuild? I rebuilt my TD42 Silvertop at 550,000Kms and was surprised at how little wear there was for the KM's

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  7 місяців тому

      I will be replacing the liners as there is some marks that suggest the engine may have had water sit in it or sat open for some time. These marks weren’t that bad and could have been bored and honed to fix but the engine was already 0.50 oversized so figured if I can do a reco myself may as well 👍🏻

    • @nickwalker147
      @nickwalker147 7 місяців тому +1

      The liners in mine were really difficult to remove and needed a lot of force to pull. But the replacements pretty much just slid in to place. Yep 50T thou over would have made the liners very thin@@ReubsModifications

    • @ReubsModifications
      @ReubsModifications  7 місяців тому

      @@nickwalker147 did you pull them as is or did you cut/bore them then remove? I’m looking at boring them out then peeling 👍🏻

    • @nickwalker147
      @nickwalker147 7 місяців тому +1

      I had a machine shop turn me up a circular piece the same ID size as a standard size Piston and with a lip at the bottom almost the same OD size as the liner. Then they made me 4 threaded spacers the same length as the liner, that screwed into the cylinder head bolt holes next to the bore. In top of these spacers is a piece of 10mm plate through which a threaded rod drops down into the circular piece. This threaded rod then pulls up the disc and liner out the top
