The Mustang is a lot cheaper here in America than in Europe (probably thanks to the big tariffs on imported cars from America). Here, you could get the fastback with the V-8 like you mentioned for just under $43,000, which comes out to roughly £33,000. If you wanted the smaller, more ecotax-friendly four-cylinder twin turbo, you could get it for £24,500 after exchange rate. To put that into perspective, that's a rear-wheel drive, two-door sporty car with over 300 horsepower for £4,000 less than a new Focus hatchback and even slightly less than the new Vauxhall Astra's lowest-priced model. You can tell the money went into the engine, chassis, and styling instead of the interior.
I just think an XKR or XK will give you the same performance, sound but with better feel and finish for a fraction of the price. It's a shame because I love the design of most American muscle cars but even at second hand prices I still think there are European muscle car options that just give you that bit more value over here. I'd imagine the inverse is true in the states - the imported euro muscle isn't a great deal compared to local mustangs and camaros

Oh well done Matt, this is the review ive been waiting for, ive just sold my S550 GT with the same engine, the coyote, ive had 3 stangs over the years and had some real fun in them, rear tyres get a bit pricey, that engine is a real peach, so much torque, they turn a lot of heads, especially when you press the gas a bit, im missing mine but i guess you have to grow up one day, im nearly 72 now, the missus says im like a big kid, i agree with you on the interior finish, very tacky, the out going model wasnt as bad, have fun smoking those tyres.who needs music when youve got that piston V8 symphony.
100% agree with the review. We tried a 5.0 manual and over time the transmission tunnel plastic started getting hot. Quality not great but the noise makes up for it. We got 25mpg on a run too!
I rented the previous model in June this year and agree with your review. It was clearly built down to a price - the spade handle roof catch is just ridiculous. My rental car had about 40k miles on it, and the wear and tear on the interior showed every mile. It didn't have the huge touch screen yours did, so most of the switches were old-school, but their paint finish was wearing off them. The USB connector on the dash was awkward to use and - likely as a result - didn't work properly (but the one in the centre console worked fine). I got better MPG than you (30.5 per US gal overall), but used it almost exclusively out of town in California for three weeks...
I love the 1960s coupe version, beautiful car. These modern ones are ridiculously cheap and course, except the price. Just put a premium cabin in and it would feel as good as it looks on the outside.
Because, believe it or not, it's cheaper to put on that and run the wires to the electronic control unit than design and have manufactured a bunch of buttons and switches and their associated wiring. I agree, though. I'd rather have physical controls for most items.
I wonder if driving electric vehicles has spoiled your torque expectations from this. What we used to consider 'pinned back in your seat' acceleration from a powerful ICE car is slightly tame now.
More to do with no turbos, but that is a good trade-off if you want naturally aspirated. There's really nothing better than NA. Also, it's a Ford. NA Porsch is a different story. If you want the poke in a cheaply built 5 litre, then really it needs 2 turbo chargers. My own car is a 3 litre twin turbo and very quick (like it wants to kill you as Matt puts it), but, it doesn't sound anywhere near as good as this Mustang......but all the same I definitely wouldn't buy a 5 litre Mustang.
The hell they do! A M3 or any AMG will cost you three times as much, and 10 times as much as the Mustang to change the oil, and filter. Reliability? Mustang forever, Euros are pure garbage!
They don't. Not any more. There are several major issues with European cars. One is the outright cost. The other is reliability. And the third is maintenance cost. I have owned several European cars, including the first generation VW Golf GTI (known as a Rabbit here), E36 328 BMW, E36 M3, Audi A6 allroad, and now we own a 2011 BMW 328xi Touring. I have also owned a Ford Focus, a German built Ford Capri with the 2. 6 litre V6 engine. Some were bought new, some were bought used. Maintenance wise, only the Ford Focus,a nd the Ford Capri cost next to nothing to maintain. For example, I replaced an oil pan gasket on the Capri inabout 20 minutes, and the part cost me about 7 dollars. Last year we had to replace the leaky oil pan gasket on 2011 BMW. The cost was close to $5,000!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WTF! Two turbos on the allroad? $6,500. Automatic tranny on the allraod? Also $6.500. Utter German rubbish!!! Also had a 2012 Caddilac CTS wagon with the 3.6 litre AWD. Problems? None! Had a 2012 Boss 302 Mustang. Problems? None! I used to be a Euro car guy. Not any more. They are crap now!!!
Matt, I’ve just got back to the UK from our 14 day road trip starting in Vegas and ending up in San Diego, and stopping in many locations on the way. We rented the Mustang but with the Eco Boost engine and I have to say it was great (in the US). We did around 900 miles and about3 tanks of full and I know that may sound bad and expensive but as fuel there is $4.80 a gallon who cares. I’m glad you mentioned the mirrors as bloody hell they are shocking and yes the steering is greet, I very much enjoyed chucking it through some mountains roads between Santa Barbara and LA or just breezing down the Coastal Highway. So yes it’s great for there but here you’ll need a second job 😜
To be fair, this is a budget car my friend, as in sports car wise it actually for the performance and what it does gives a layman access to this kind of motoring so I don’t really mind the cutbacks, I had one as a higher car when I was working in America to be fair, I didn’t really notice. I just enjoyed.
Every time I’m close to buying a Mustang, I back out. I’ve rented both mustang and Camaro but couldn’t see myself owning one. I’d love you to review more cars you can get in the USA but not in Europe.
I worked at Ford in the US when this car was designed and know the interior design engineer well. He was massively constrained by cost back in 2019 hence the cheap feeling interior. I have a 2020 Mustang and so much nicer to be inside - hopefully Ford will get it right for the next model?
I owned a 2019 Mustang GT in the UK for a year. Mine was a black convertible as well, as it happens, but mine was a manual. I didn't like the 10-speed auto option, as it always felt like it was hunting; the manual was much better. I averaged c.18mpg, but it would do nearly 30 on a run. Quality-wise, the 2019 car was much better than the one you have reviewed (and there was no stupid touch screen). I was also disappointed with the performance, the Coyote is too top-endy and lacks low down torque - I blame the flat plane crank design. It's electric when you rev the nuts of it, but you have to be going silly speeds to get that grin on your face. That's why I didn't keep it for long :)
You should try the Challenger instead. Although not as easy to rent as the mustang, that every rental car company in LA has a ton of, I felt that the Dodge had a better interior overall, and same ride experience. As for the interior of the Mustang, unfortunately its pretty much the same story across the board with Ford in North America, they all feel cheap. And if you try the new Lincoln range, its obvious they know how to do it better. Blame it on the accountants. Many still talk down on Chinese made cars, but as a Canadian who rented a couple BYD's in Europe, I can say they felt a lot better put together than the Fords.
Biggest challenge for Mustang is only about 10 years ago they were 17 to 20k here in USA for the smaller engine versions…. and they are still perceived to be a cheap sports car but sadly they are no longer “cheap”…
You need to do a should you buy in the uk as it has different compromises in the UK, including larger door mirrors. The cup holders are a pain. The face lifted s550 has the 10 speed auto gives you that kick you are missing. The 6 speed auto is really lazy.
In Australia you can buy a 2025 GT hardtop for $87500 aud drive-away!! They come fully loaded and registration charges are based on weight so are minimal over standard pricing approx. $1050aud total- yearly All Mustangs are highly optioned here and come standard with: 10 speed auto or 6 spd manual Quad exhaust system with Active valve bi modal performance exhaust with four selectable modes Unique 19x9-inch (front) and 19x9.5-inch (rear) alloy wheels - Carbonised Grey Quality Pirelli P Zero tyres Brembo™ Brakes with red callipers Sports lowered suspension set up Fit and finish on the exterior has improved considerably, but interior quality is average when compared to the Euros But a similar performance Euro eg M4 or RS5 you are paying double. Ford offer a 5 year comprehensive bumper to bumper warranty including anything in the interior.!! How do I know all this? I own one.
You are splitting hairs here, come on where else you get a V8 for the price of a hatchback? The world needs cars like that, not everything needs to be wrapped in leather and wood.
That is a good looking car. The sort that should be confined to fast and furious movies where they can make it look super fast but no one bothers about the cheap interior. Oh, and were you on Mulholland Drive by any chance Matt? 🤔😂
Are those mpg figures US or Imperial? If US (probably what's showing on the trip computer), you need to add approx. 20% for Imperial. Still not great, but closer to your expectations. Btw, I think the auto is a ten-speed (!), not six.
Hi Matt, was looking at a 2016 UK spec GT and the interior was far better quality than that brand new one. Would the new ones coming here be getting the same crappy interior? The last time i was in the States i rented a 2022 Chevy Suburban which was top of the range and tell you what, if the sold right hand drive ones in the UK i would buy one, it was fantastic and was full of kit, well screwed together and i got an average of 21MPG! Great video, enjoy your trip to LA!👍👏👏♥️🏴🇺🇸
I feel that part of the naff makes the modern mustang charm, but christ, every time i see a big screen as a dashboard i just think "MoT failure spec" they never try to hide it these days gives that work from home look.
Matt, i absolutely love that car. Each to their own. Boring 💤 people buy EV cars 😊😊😊😊😊myself personally i prefer something like that. I've had American cars and they are awesome. I've also owned Rolls Royces and lots more. 😊😊each to their own choice. Keep up the good work with the videos Matt 😮😊😊
Sold my 2018 GT two months ago - incredible car to drive and own. Still miss it daily. Interior is a bit cheap yeah but ultimately you don't care in the slightest when you've got a coyote V8 sitting in front of you. Couldn't fault the car - I've owned a number of performance cars and the Mustang blew them all out of the water in terms of fun and theatrics. Having said that I don't like the look of these new ones at all., much prefer previous versions.
I’ve always thought the newer models look cheap. I drove one in the desert and Vegas in 2015. Nice as it was a soft top too. But very cheap inside like you say. I don’t like those rear light either. Remind me of those cheap airfix kits from our childhood. I’d rather have a Jaaaaag!
The build quality on that interior looks shocking. It's been a while since I last drove a US built car, and I would have thought they'd improved, but seemingly not.
My fav car of all time is the 65-67 mustang. Beautiful iconic cars! These newer Mustangs just don't do it for me, yea they might be quicker and more economical but they don't have that old charming character fo they. Thats the problem with newer cars they have zero personality
As a big fan of the 2.8 Capri I'll point out that they would smoke both rear tyres with a very optimistic 160bhp. You put nearly 500bhp through 2 back tyres and without traction control it would be near undriveable. Health and safety trying to keep fools alive is why it doesn't feel quick.
This was more like it! On the couple of occasions I've hired cars in the USA they've been cheap and nasty on the inside so no real surprise there! I think regulations in the US cause manufacturers to skimp on that sort of thing so they meet safety requirements. That's my impression anyway. On a side note, here in Stockport, I seem to be seeing Mustangs everywhere at the moment!!
Shame about the flimsy plastic bits, how is this going to holdup in four years or so. Still like the look of it though, do they do a yellow or orange paint job?
is this the new model Mustang? You say it has a 6 speed auto, but the Mustang has used the 10 speed auto since about 2017 (i think), so you might want to confirm the specs. Regarding the fuel consumption, I would assume that the trip computer reads the MPG in US gallons. 13 MPG US is 15.5 MPG UK or in real measurements, 18.1L/100km. The V8 convertable in Australia is about $98,000 and the fastback around $92,000. A lot cheaper than in the UK. They're a very nice looking car, said to drive very well and they sound fantastic but it seems that the build quality for Ford USA is much inferior to the Euro Fords.
Having owned 2 of them I can't recommend. It had 6 warranty claims, the exhaust fell off, the braking system needed replacing in full, the entire front end needed replacing for rust, the door seals leaked, it misfired, the window electrics failed, it creaked and rattled and the interior was sinfully cheap. It was pretty and theatrical sure, but as an ownership proposition it was dreadful.
Nobody talks about the '74 to '79 Mustang II era, an era where Ford really lost their way with Mustang. However, there was one good thing to come from them...their front ends are in thousands of hot rods.
Hi Matt….. yes the Ford Mustang has turned sixty!!!! But can you recall which feature film that the new 1964 Mustang appeared in???? Further the new Mustang 2024 here in Australia starts at $65,000 & tops out at $103,000…… naturally I’ve quoted AUS$…..
Every time I go to the US I rent one, they’re great fun. However, if you had one in the UK, even your best mates would rightly call you a knobhead! 😂
@BobTheBlue this shows you are weak if your friends decide what car you buy.
@@Chris-hw4mq the problem is Chris, in this instance, I’d agree with them!😂
In the Netherlands you’d be a very rich Knobhead!
(It has more luxury tax on it than the original price due to high CO2 emissions)
You need to get new mates!
😂😂😂😂😂 great comment!
100% agree with the review. We tried a 5.0 manual and over time the transmission tunnel plastic started getting hot. Quality not great but the noise makes up for it. We got 25mpg on a run too!
Personally I like the MK1 like in the film Bullet , however that is a nice car but ⛽ Eco boost NO , excellent video as always Matt 👍
Weird, I thought the exact same things when I drove one. Dream car is a restomod mustang anyway, maybe one of the jag 4.2 engines in it
I love the 1960s coupe version, beautiful car. These modern ones are ridiculously cheap and course, except the price. Just put a premium cabin in and it would feel as good as it looks on the outside.
Appreciate the Harry's garage style summary at the end, very Yorkshire.
Cmon with the huge double tablet on the dashboard !, why are manufacturers against beautiful dashboards these days
Because, believe it or not, it's cheaper to put on that and run the wires to the electronic control unit than design and have manufactured a bunch of buttons and switches and their associated wiring. I agree, though. I'd rather have physical controls for most items.
@tenpoundburrito makes sense yes, cost cutting. Wish they could apply some cost cutting with the pricing 😆
Rented a Mustang to drive down the coast in California. Power steering failed after a few hours. Had to finish the trip in a full-size van. Fun times.
Despise the rear light. Dislike the car in general. Despite huge leaps forward in recent years, the Europeans still do things so much better.
Agreed, an Audi S5 or BMW M4 is so much better.
The hell they do!
A M3 or any AMG will cost you three times as much, and 10 times as much as the Mustang to change the oil, and filter.
Reliability?
Mustang forever, Euros are pure garbage!
@@apscoradiales Only you have made this about price.
@@apscoradiales It's also about how a car makes you feel. One of these makes you feel like a poor idiot. They do sell well in America though...
I think you LOVE this car
the road tax is a mortgage, the insurance group is over 9000 and it has the fuel economy of a plane.
US gallons are about 20% smaller than UK gallons.
How you tell stories is amazing!
To be fair, this is a budget car my friend, as in sports car wise it actually for the performance and what it does gives a layman access to this kind of motoring so I don’t really mind the cutbacks, I had one as a higher car when I was working in America to be fair, I didn’t really notice. I just enjoyed.
Hire
Yes….although would prefer a S197 c2011-2014. The Mustang came out the same year as me although it has aged much better. 😂
American cars are awesome 😊 i used to own a 1986 5litre V8 camaro . So loud 🔊 and just awesome ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Every time I’m close to buying a Mustang, I back out. I’ve rented both mustang and Camaro but couldn’t see myself owning one.
I’d love you to review more cars you can get in the USA but not in Europe.
Loving your reviews of "proper" cars... Can't stand this EV nonsense..., sorry... Great review again..., love the honesty of it 👍
Hired one last year whilst in Florida, total pile of crap, ended up changing for an SUV for remainder of our holiday
WOW! Always wanted to go there, 'Mulholland Drive' - weird, beautifull, creapy, awesome David Lynch film.
the first two adjectives anyway...also s**t.
Only thing it's missing is printed wood grain on plastic door cappings, like classic Ford Ghias. One step above Fablon - who remembers that stuff?
The perfect Grocery-Getter. 😉❤
I worked at Ford in the US when this car was designed and know the interior design engineer well. He was massively constrained by cost back in 2019 hence the cheap feeling interior. I have a 2020 Mustang and so much nicer to be inside - hopefully Ford will get it right for the next model?
The good thing about the roof lock is that it’s one less thing to go wrong and you know it’s locked
If I move over there, I’ll pick one up
I owned a 2019 Mustang GT in the UK for a year.
My Mitsubishi had manual release roof locks and then the rest was electric.
Those steering wheel switches look like the ones out my Dacia Jogger!
Love your channel❤
I made it through the interior review, I’ll stick with my 2017 SL500 thank you.
Great video.
Cheers
You need to do a should you buy in the uk as it has different compromises in the UK, including larger door mirrors. The cup holders are a pain. The face lifted s550 has the 10 speed auto gives you that kick you are missing. The 6 speed auto is really lazy.
I'm not sure what the big deal is about having to pull a handle to open the roof. What's the problem?
Its odd the you have to do it but i agree with you. Also think its kind of a reassuring and positive action.
In Australia you can buy a 2025 GT hardtop for $87500 aud drive-away!!
They come fully loaded and registration charges are based on weight so are minimal over standard pricing approx. $1050aud total- yearly
All Mustangs are highly optioned here and come standard with:
10 speed auto or 6 spd manual
Quad exhaust system with Active valve bi modal performance exhaust with four selectable modes
Unique 19x9-inch (front) and 19x9.5-inch (rear) alloy wheels - Carbonised Grey
Quality Pirelli P Zero tyres
Brembo™ Brakes with red callipers
Sports lowered suspension set up
Fit and finish on the exterior has improved considerably, but interior quality is average when compared to the Euros
But a similar performance Euro eg M4 or RS5 you are paying double.
Ford offer a 5 year comprehensive bumper to bumper warranty including anything in the interior.!!
How do I know all this? I own one.
Matt would be great If you did a video with Doug DeMuro and Motoman, make it happen 👍
Maybe one day!
Or even Jay Leno
Great engine. Shocking car. Honestly, you wouldn’t want to be see in one
You are splitting hairs here, come on where else you get a V8 for the price of a hatchback? The world needs cars like that, not everything needs to be wrapped in leather and wood.
Yep.
Hatchbacks don't cost 60k ! 😂
@@sarwat18 They won't sell many Mustangs in Germany with that build quality !
@@andrewwaller5913 Audi rs3 costs $62k, and definitely doesn't come with V8.
@@sarwat18 A far superior car however. Audi build quality is light years ahead of Ford !
That is a good looking car. The sort that should be confined to fast and furious movies where they can make it look super fast but no one bothers about the cheap interior.
Oh, and were you on Mulholland Drive by any chance Matt? 🤔😂
he did say that....yes,
@@serenityinside1 but only a couple of times. I wasn't sure...
Are those mpg figures US or Imperial? If US (probably what's showing on the trip computer), you need to add approx. 20% for Imperial. Still not great, but closer to your expectations.
Btw, I think the auto is a ten-speed (!), not six.
US gallons but the mpg is still woeful.
Stop being a tight ass!!
Enjoy the car it smiles per mile not per gallon !
Live life for today and fuck tomorrow!
The rear seating room is less than my wife’s GR Yaris. How did they manage that in such a big car.
Sticking with my Z4
awesome video
I’ve always thought the newer models look cheap. I drove one in the desert and Vegas in 2015. Nice as it was a soft top too. But very cheap inside like you say. I don’t like those rear light either. Remind me of those cheap airfix kits from our childhood. I’d rather have a Jaaaaag!
The build quality on that interior looks shocking. It's been a while since I last drove a US built car, and I would have thought they'd improved, but seemingly not.
Did you get a room with it? A true love in 😂😂 mustang and refined - never been mentioned in the same sentence before.
TBH i thought he was pretty critical of it.
@@voivod6871 He was about it being made cheaply, was the first half "love it " almost every sentence 😂
@@kiwi2xs yeah you’re not wrong but the message I got was, interior horrible and cheap but still fun to drive.
Not a patch on a Jag XKR !
Better finish, Better performance… Simple.
The Last of the Proper Jags ! RIP 😢
It was pretty and theatrical sure, but as an ownership proposition it was dreadful.
you are living my dream life
Nobody talks about the '74 to '79 Mustang II era, an era where Ford really lost their way with Mustang.
However, there was one good thing to come from them...their front ends are in thousands of hot rods.
Who were you imagining being, or being with, Brando, Nicholson, Beatty, Hopper etc? I would love to drive around there.
Haha James Dean probably
Yes, you should
Hi Matt….. yes the Ford Mustang has turned sixty!!!!
But can you recall which feature film that the new 1964 Mustang appeared in????
Further the new Mustang 2024 here in Australia starts at $65,000 & tops out at $103,000…… naturally I’ve quoted AUS$…..
The answer to the film question……
GOLDFINGER……
EON Productions got a pre release Mustang from America and ran it around Switzerland for the film Goldfinger…..
Unfortunately the tyres on the Mustang failed when the Aston Martin DB5 over took it?????
Regards Ian 👨🎤🇳🇿👍🍸🍸
Transmission should be a 10 speed auto.
10 speed auto is a great cruiser, but it’s definitely not as fun as the crappy 6 speed.
Should you buy a Ford Mustang?
Yes, you bloody well should!
America f YEAH!!!
