The Rev's fingers might not be as nimble as they were in his 20's, but at 72 years old, those blues are still cooked into his soul. This is the first song I ever heard from ZZ Top back in 1972, and I still think their first album is one of the most underrated of all time.

Kathryn. I saw then twice when we were all much younger. Amazing sound for three guys. I don't enjoy these impromptu single mic recordings. It just seems like almost insulting to the musicians the acoustics are so outrageously bad.

Dusty+Billy G. had 3 stacks each of Rio Grande amps and Billy played Pearly Gates(1959 Les Paul). The energy they conveyed was incredible that night !!!###

The Stones song, Brown Sugar, is about sex and rape with black slave girls, so in these days of sensitivity (shall we say), the stones are turning that side of things down. However, my own band regularly knocks out a storming version of The Stones Brown Sugar and it goes down really well.
I knew a guy who followed this band and saw them over 30 times! He said it was amazing that Frank being a long time heroin addict could still play. I didn't believe him because junkies don't usually live that long. Then recently I saw a show about them and damn if Frank didn't only admit that he was a heroin user but he is STILL using it in 2022! He said he just loves it and has no intention of quitting! I was floored. Well.... good luck and God bless.

Hard to believe the stones refuse to play the classic brown sugar anymore. Ever notice how our former rock heros that actually represented counter culture and freedom of expression now are woke nerds. Its just a song that generations listened to and absolutely loved including many many people of color. We think these things we do to combat perceived racism, these pieces of rotten low hanging fruit like refuting or boycotting a song like brown sugar is helping. Its not. Its an empty gesture so we can tell ourselves we're making a difference. We're not. Its just ludicrous.
@@nitromartini1422 Listen to the original guitar solo. Then listen to how he plays all their great songs with fast solo’s. It’s like he can’t do it anymore. @@johnwilliams1223 : I have heard every ZZ Top album and have seen them three times in concert. Gibbons never gets in a hurry about anything. He never has; he never will. I am almost as old as Gibbons, and I really don't understand your preoccupation with speed. Is your idea of music some kind of race?
@@nitromartini1422 It’s not a preoccupation. I’m simply saying that in the 70’s, he had many songs where his licks were fast. La Grange is one of them. I’m just saying that in 2022 he doesn’t play those licks the same way as he did the originals. So is that for a particular reason, or is he incapable? It’s a valid question. Eddie Van Halen never played any different than he always did up until the point of his death. So why does Billy Gibbons? Agree. New guy is good just different. I saw them a few times in the 80s and they were great and have seen them twice in past 10 years- seemed like they nailed it in. Totally rehearsed and quite short for a main act. Three Doors Down opened one night and I thought gave a better show. Not to take anything away from ZZ legacy.
I mean ,i've been with the trio for over 40 years and 15 + concerts... all credit to Elwood Francis!! Being a drummer myself, always enjoying ZZ Top's studio recordings (except for when they changed their albums to a kind of "electro-drum sound"in the 80's and then back again TG), I cannot understand they stand out by sounding off-beat live so often. On many live-recordings it really troubling that the drummer and the others just do not click. If it was a listener issue, it would not differ so comparing 70's, 80's, 90's and 2000'-live recordings; then it would be noticeable in studio recordings, which it's not. It's a shame because it's one of my favourite groups.
Nationwide is a good tune. I think when their regular bassist was alive and playing he wore a hat too and looked more identical to the lead guitarist guy. I thought that was a neat unique thing about them. I'll have to listen to find out what you're talking about regarding their electro-techno stuff. I think I know what you mean and I agree 🎶
