I'm glad I met LC personally before his Gig in Nuremberg in 1979. He was very kind, polite and we had a good conversation. At that time I was 21 and I wrote songs and poetry. He organized a backstage VIP pass for me and after the show he encouraged me to keep on writing poetry and songs. One year later I published my first book of poetry. In this way LC influenced me a lot, like no other artist. I'm so glad he kept on singing for a long time. Thank very much, Mr. Cohen.
Wow! This doco was powerful. I believe we got to see the soul of Leonard at the end. His integrity, humanity, love. I have even more respect for him now, after watching this. I remember seeing how he would shave whenever he was anxious, almost needing to centre himself. Just amazing. Thank you so much for sharing this documentary online for us all to see it. 🫶🫶🫶
The one man who reminds me so much of my beloved father when I was a child is Leonard Cohen. The hair, the eyes, even the nose. Dad was the Spanish (roots in Sevilla) version. To this day every time I listen to or see Leonard Cohen, I think of him. My old man was just as complex as Cohen. And maybe I am drawn to Cohen's work so I may sort out those parental leftovers from the past (which no one is immune to). This is a comforting but jarring watch. Kind, gentle, yet conflicting and in your face, stubborn and a bit vain. I miss them both. Perhaps they are somewhere in the Universe drinking Sangria, getting sloppy and jamming together while the sun slowly sets.
I first fell into the depth of his songs in 1974 at age 12. My first ever LP was Songs from a room. That was 50 years ago. Still have it. His songs are like some high prayer of love and life in all it's colours.
I discovered Leonard Cohen four years ago. And I must say that it was wonderful discovering! Leonard was absolutely genius in poetry, in music and in life. Beautiful, humble, wise man. I love him!❤
You will have an ongoing opportunity to learn more about LC. He is absolutely a wonderful poet, author, musician and anything else he chooses to be. I'm sure you will find it a great journey of inspiration and joy!
I discovered Leonard Cohen in--what?--1969 in Toronto. This film brings that time all back to me. A time full of joy and, then, heartache. I've read his novels and his poems. I even still have his first album unsigned by him unfortunately. Montreal was the scene of so much creativity and turmoil, right?
He is the reason why i bought a classical guitar back 1973 after i heard the song suzzane & boy he left a legacy behind up there in his tower of song ey !
@@susancarolan153 I was listening to a French-Canadian commentator in Toronto on the French radio station there, CJBC in about 1979. She said something stupid like, "Leonard Cohen was born in Montreal, but I don't think he lived there for very long." Two Solitudes in action, right? Leonard Cohen was more popular in France than in his home town. A friend of mine who I met in Montreal in 1975 told me that Leonard Cohen was so popular in France that someone could put on a concert and make money by just singing his songs. He was virtually unknown in Montreal's French quarter at that time.
MAJOR DISCLAIMER !!!! there is some really traumatizing footage of war crimes from 41:20 til 42:45, i loved all of this documentary except for this really unnecessary trauma on screen, really shameful to include this in what is otherwise a really beautiful portrait of leonard.
A bizarre and distracting inclusion from the editor and restorer as the original documentary predates a lot of the footage that was shown, meaning that it was not included in the original theatrical release. I feel it tarnishes Leonards vision and acts as a unnecessary, overdone distraction. Isolde Films must've not felt confident in their output and decided to add unnecessary changes. What's with the obviously fake punching sound effects that appear at 1:25? Yeah, sounds of people getting punched would get picked up from a microphone amongst all the other crowd noise in that room.
Lenny and I go all the way back to the Sixties. I have climbed Mount Royal and looked down on the city that is the setting of his novel "Beautiful Losers."
“Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.” Psalms 52:7 KJV
Israel has always sold the idea of fake freedom, Leonard blatantly exposed that back then. They sell faux lgbtq rights just to receive the protection money from USA.

Even Paul Stanley of KISS, in his book Backstage Pass complimented Leonard. And it's great to see legendary producer Bob Johnston performing here.
