Agreed. I could always relate to him because I feel the same way...a tortured soul.... I am a very reflective person, an idealist which makes it hard for me to be in this place call life..the planet.. Years ago I watched his DVD in Tibet, must have watched it 20+ times trying to gain understanding.. I often revisit his clips on his honest dialog about living with depression ... I trust that death is easier than living... living is hard.... Hope he is resting...

10-11-2024 Friday. I play therapeutic music at people's bedside. This was requested TWICE this week: once by a woman receiving a blood infusion and once by a brand new first time dad. Aaah... the power of music...
Hallelujah was written by Leonard Cohen, a great Canadian from Montreal. It was one of the greatest gifts he could give the world as it is performed all over the world. Cohen now rests in peace back in his beloved Montreal.
My beloved husband, Larry Williams, who loved Leonard Cohen and this song.....took his last breath on this earth while "Hallelujah" was playing💔 3-20-16
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity. With poetic metaphors, it explores the complexity of love and being human. It explores the highs and lows of interpersonal relationships. Romance and passion go hand in hand with disappointment and loss. Spiritual and biblical motifs reflect the search for meaning and transcendence. "Hallelujah" is an ode to the contradictory nature of our feelings - joy and pain, ecstasy and doubt. Cohen looks compassionately at our longings and our vulnerability. The song is an appeal to embrace life in all its facets. He invites us to face the darkness and yet sing of the light. From loss can come gratitude, from doubt can be born faith. The timeless resonance of "Hallelujah" lies in this multi-layered message. Every person can find something of their own in it, draw comfort and hope. A moving hymn to the beauty and pain of being human
What an astounding writer, you are❤. It is sad to say that I can't even fine words to pin you😪. Your depth and expression of life and its intent by Mr Cohen lyrics were just AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!!!❤❤❤ PLEASE KEEP WITING! 0:12 0:12 0:12
So long, Leonard.
His original version in 1984 sounds different, but he kept working with it and found the song in time. This version is my favorite and better than the hundreds of covers that have been made. I believe most of those performers don't understand the real meaning. Leonard said this isn't a joyful song, but it comes from a sadder place with a certain amount of resilience to still rejoice even when the spirit is broken.
Richard Burchett That's my definition of a happy song! Be attuned with the experienc of grace no matter the circumstances. But I've been around six decades so far. That's what I learned.
After having 3 boys, we tried once more to have a girl. And 'Hallelujah" we finally had a daughter!!! Now this is 'my daughter's song'. She was born in 2009 and I listen daily to this song!!!❤❤
I am a grieving 79 yr old former husband(widower), I lost my love in Aug., she was a very sick lady. I didn't know that. My daughters came to our home and took her with them. One of them came and took me to their home. On the way she told me mother was on hospice😢 I am grateful that all of our descendants except one were able to say goodbye to her. I was there holding her as she passed😢😭😭 I weep all day and night since Aug. I don't know how others handle it. I don't want to
Singing isn't just about perfect pitch and vocal clarity. It's the expression of the human soul in the form of melody. Despite the technical flaws in this performance, Mr. Cohen takes all of us on an unforgettable emotional journey.
I once read an interview of a (famous) singer who said it was "just a job" to sing to the audience...which put me off that artist. Obviously some are all in and sharing their emotions with us when singing.
I discovered Mr. Cohen far too late in my life, when he was about to leave us, but I have been ever since a true fan of his deep, fascinating voice and his gangster-like look wearing those old fashioned hats that were his trademark...We'll never forget you, Mr. Cohen. Argentina is still mourning over you !
Well said Linda, I've been a fan since Suzanne, his first hit, yet found his later performances, and especially Hallelujah, to be even better than his early work.
Yes, he died the day before the election when Trump the crazy-making machine was elected. Now 8 years later we are at the crossroads again. Kamala Harris is my choice and I am ready for a new chapter! Please send us all the help you can from above, Leonard!
I dedicate this to my son Jamie, who died while on active duty in the Navy. I should have played this at his services but I wasn't thinking clearly, losing a son. I think he forgives me now, he loved this song. RIP Jamie.
On the contrary! I'm repeatedly listening to this song. Every time when there is a new version available I will compare and listen to another five or six versions. But in the end I'm returning to this original and live performance. The organist amazes me and reminds me of accompaniments to Mahalia Jackson's gospels. What I like most here is to feel the 6/8 pace. bst rgds.
Do not assume so much. I was appreciating this solo when I noticed your comment. The solo complements this performance in such a sublime way. Not overbearing, but perfectly in concert, much the same as the sax and the other instruments..Peace
Exactly. Cohen didn't have best voice ever. His voice was very imperfect. But he was singing really emotionally and deep - that made awesome effect! In my opinion - there is no cover better than that song, even if cover is sung technically better! :D
There are very few male vocalists who can give me goosebumps not to mention tears to my eyes. That in my opinion is the mark of a true singer. What one must do is determine for oneself what constitutes a "good voice". It's not just technical ability, it is primarily where that voice is coming from.
Probably because dawg disagrees with your opinion, and feels that you shouldn't be allowed one. That attitude is rampant in today's society. I too, disagree with you completely, but nevertheless, feel that you have the right to be wrong, lol.
He was legendary, in his life and now that he passed. His music, his songs will live on forever. Thank you for a beautiful music master of your art. RIP.
Great is our Lord, and of great power: his understanding is infinite. Psalm 147:5 ✝🌅 But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered. Fear not therefore: ye are of more value than many sparrows. Luke 12:7 ✝🌅 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance. 2 Peter 3:9 ✝🌅
I'm not really a Christian but I do really love this song. Just makes me so damn emotional. Literally saved me from suicide. So I don't care what my religion is I will love this song no matter what.
I have been listening to his music since the '70's . It is a sad day to hear of his death, but great that this song and his music continue to honor him . RIP Leonard Cohen
Taking off your hat at the end to thank the audience for their appreciation of your work is sadly something that you don't see anymore. What class action he was.
I doubt Leonard Cohen would be anything other than amused by all the debate about Judaism vs. Christianity. I think his great genius as a poet is the way in which he combines the religious and the secular in his metaphors and images. This "metaphysical" (ref. 17th century poets like John Donne) integration of the sacred and the profane relies first of all on his really intimate knowledge of the Hebrew bible. I have been a Cohen fan for as long as he's been around and I still am. Read some of the very early poems. Just brilliant. If you haven't watched k.d. lang singing this one, with him in the audience, I recommend it. Thank you, Mr. Leonard Cohen.
I'm not a religious person, so I don't think I like or dislike someone based on that. I like Leonard because of the way he uses words. And, well, he has a great voice...
100% agree. His words are wonderful. Who knows (or cares) what his religious beliefs are? But he is steeped in a tradition that values words and learning and has provided him with a bottomless supply of images which he uses to their best advantage. And I love his voice.
+Joe Martin It has a great deal of religious connotations. The opening is a description of King David writing psalms, the second verse has references to both David and Samson, and the line "Lord of Song" has very clear religious imagery behind it.
Thank you Dean for intelligent commentary rather than unnecessary personal attacks by others. Through personal channels I have been told that he was extremely intelligent and I believe, as you said, that he would be amused. I would still love to discuss it with him.
The world has lost giant, a genius, and a fine man. Leonard Cohen, aged 82 passed away, apparently today. He was best known as a composer, but also wrote novels and numerous poetry collections. Most people will remember him popularly as the composer of this song, "Hallelujah", covered by many artists, and used in a number of popular films, including "Shrek", "Meet Joe Black", and television's "E.R.". For me, music I've enjoyed by a particular artist evokes the fond memories that come with the memory of that person, or others you enjoyed the music with, Leonard Cohen's rendition of "Hallelujah" with over 41 million views, a very popular rendition. Rest in peace and Shalom, Mr. Cohen, your music made me think of you as a friend, though we never met. You will live on in the memories of millions of people. The memory of you will be as a blessing for many.
John Mood Amen to that. I once had the honour of seeing him live and he was every bit of the legend he was made out to be - the best live concert ever. A great poet and voice. Thank you for the music and thank you for the words, Mr. Cohen. We will miss you, but we won't forget.
was introduced to Mr. Cohen's music when a friend's father took us to his him perform at Massey Hall in Toronto. I must have bee about 17 or 18 yrs old. As soon as he started singing in left my chair in the 1st balcony and sat on the stair....chin in my hands just mesmerized by his presence voice and gentle manner, that hid a lion. RIP Leonard Cohen.....you had and continue to have a profound influence on my life! With most heartfelt gratitude.....thank you for sharing your great gift.
this man is the ultimate symbol of cool! A true cool cat! His new album better sell umpteen scagillion copies! Love his music and the poetry I have read, was crushed by the news tonight. bless you and keep you! May you get to heaven a half hour before the devil knows you're dead!
so much to say, but man, you sound like the best of the good folks....We'll live...dude'll be dead prolly before he gets sworn in. Thank you, at any rate.
Leonard Cohen is the best of all the musicians, I am always slowly but surely expanding my vinyl collection of his work, it's more fun finding it at car boots than buying it all on eBay.
john cole Hello John I have a 1967 The Songs Of Leonard Cohen album, his first, 1st on side 1, Suzanne, 5th is Sister of mercy, Side 2, 1st track, So long Marianne, 5th track is One of us cannot be wrong. It's 33 1/3 stereo.
Today, my uncle died. now how is this even relevant to L. Cohen? Leonard Cohen was his favorite singer. He had grown up in the hippy era, saw the rise of metal, the apparition of Edm, and many more. But none of these genres brought him to a blissful joy like Leonard Cohen did, when he discovered him a few years ago, following his stroke. He had become a frail man after that incident, but Cohen's music gave him so much joy in his painful life. he introduced me to Leonard Cohen, and now that he's gone, I now realise the amazing work this singer does. Thank you uncle Michel, thank you for everything and especially, thank you for making me rediscover Leonard Cohen.
+J Schmitz ...all you got from this heartfelt post was to 'correct' realize? He very well could be from Great Britain where they still use an s instead of a z....get over yourself
I have been so sad about the terrible things happening in the world. I listened to this song and it lifted me up. Thank you to Leonard Cohen for the wonderful words and music. The whole world needs to sing this.
I often spend hours listening to my old friend, Leonard Cohen, his songs that deeply move me. I have followed his epic journey of inspiration all my life and I cannot convey what he means to me. I hope he does not mind me saying so, and I am sure he has contemplated this himself, he his getting on now and when his time comes to face his maker (although I am not sure if he believes in one) this will be a very sad day, as I will have lost one of my closest friends and a brother in spirit. I have no idea how we will all get on without him touching our lives, our souls and our hearts. On that day I shall hold a vigil in honour of a great, truly great man. Thank you Leonard for all that you have made me feel in my life, for indeed you have made me get in touch with myself in a profound and special way. I am not ashamed to say that I love you as my own brother as I love my son Elliott. Please listen to this song and understand what he is saying to us all, we all need someone to love.
+jonplive I said nothing of the sort in regard to "planning", nor did I write such, I wrote " On that day I shall hold a vigil in honour of a great, truly great man." I doubt very much that I shall be leaving this earth before him, VERY MUCH! Peace to you./
Hallelujah Leonard, my endless love. You were the greatest poet ever lived, I miss you so badly. "Your eyes are soft with sorrow - hey, that's no way to say goodbye"! ♡
Hello to anyone reading this! It would mean the world to me if you could just spare 2 minutes of your spare time to check out my guitar cover of this song over on my channel. I put a ridiculous amount of time and effort in to my music. Promise you won't be disappointed!
dcdfan , im crying now knowing he is gone my eyes are so full off sadness for leonard the cohen he left as a great poet does simply vanished from our eyes he did what he wanted ,made us all cry in his last concert he visited us in jerusalem
Paula Vaessen this hints about David coveting somebody's wife and Samson lozing his strength to his weakens for the charms of a woman.i thought the word haleluja is reserved for praise to the only one, isn't this song about lust I don't see where God comes in ,please enlighten me
+Sidney Oreilly Its like saying give it to God BC he lost his strength in faith, like back sliding, like if u see your brother or sister in Christ, whose broken the covenant of God ( Broken Hallehluah ) instead of judging you go to God and pray for them sacredly to God.
Cohen moved to a higher plane the day before 2016 US election. Probably a preference for hallelujah rather than the chaos that followed for the last 8 years. But we aren’t going back!!
I love the original version of this song. I've listened to this song from my youth up until today, a senior. The older I get, the more I feel the depth of this prayer. We experience the height of God's love, we make mistakes, we listen to the wrong voice, we fall into a pit of despair. Then only God can restore the lost soul. Only God can restore the Hallelujah.
You are the only sign of state of ,The sound ,the works of not only you but the younger generation are drinking and breathing that want to go to hold on to the prayer. That's what I thought too, but stretching back and trying on the video. Thank you and yeah I also to the prayer 🙏 for all of the family and prayers to (help ) that you and your family are doing. Thanks for the me and this week has had ,Thank you,God,this was the best way to Make this is my life. Blessings to you.
2016 - a very sad year... I will not say RIP Leonard, because in your last album you were in peace already. Hineni! Thanks friend to learn us also how to die dignified as a the gentleman you were!
I cried the day Leonard died. This may be the finest piece of music combined with extraordinary poetry ever written. And this performance is his finest. I watch/listen at least once a week. Blessed be.
He had the poetry maybe not the voice. But I. Followed him from the 60 ‘s. To his death just recently. I think we lost a great poet. He couldn’t sing. But most of his his songs/poetry was based on life’s crisis’s
Life is a circle. What is born will die. What dies will be born again. Hallelujah. Hallelujah for this miracle we face once we open our eyes every day. Hallelujah for the peace, the love, the music, the beauty of this world. Hallelujah for this life.
How do you figure what dies will be born again? Are you talking reincarnation? If so, I have a question...2ho decides what you come back as? A cow, a beetle, a man...who says???
My husband died four days ago and I'm still trying to make sense of it all .... Hallelujah helps.

Rainy Scott Leonard Cohen If It Be Your Will
Leonard Cohen's "Hallelujah" is a song full of depth and ambiguity.

So long, Leonard.

Such a shame that this man has passed away. May you rest in Peace Sir. The original and best version IMHO
It's a masterpiece of love and understanding. What a voice!
The best version♥️♥️♥️

Singing isn't just about perfect pitch and vocal clarity. It's the expression of the human soul in the form of melody. Despite the technical flaws in this performance, Mr. Cohen takes all of us on an unforgettable emotional journey.
I once read an interview of a (famous) singer who said it was "just a job" to sing to the audience...which put me off that artist. Obviously some are all in and sharing their emotions with us when singing.
Those aren't "technical flaws." Those are the idiosyncratic grace notes of a man who has earned the right to use them.
So very true!! Great artists share their genius with us. Thank heaven for these beautiful souls.

You're wrong. We were listening and swooning to it!
Not overbearing, but perfectly in concert, much the same as the sax and the other

This song is good with or without a good voice, a true musical genius this was.
Neither was Johnny Cash's, but that doesn't detract from either being a legend.

Probably because dawg disagrees with your opinion, and feels that you shouldn't be allowed one. That attitude is rampant in today's society. I too, disagree with you completely, but nevertheless, feel that you have the right to be wrong, lol.

Thomas Fowler I agree, and thank you for your service!

Taking off your hat at the end to thank the audience for their appreciation of your work is sadly something that you don't see anymore. What class action he was.
Yes indeed! That gentleman was a pure class act.
A very special gesture from a very spevial gent! Sorely missed.
😂✌
Maybe its because people dont wear hats these days
He always doffed his hat when one of the musicians was taking a solo - he was a true class act.
👍👍👍

I mean who doesn't like Leonard? He is the best!
I just recently discovered him and I'm SO thankful to the Lord that I did!! The local library had "I'm Your Man", his biography by Sylvie Simmons.
I came here when rewatching Shrek, when Leonard Cohen died, and now during the Snyder Cut.
God this song is beautiful.
Finally! Someone from Shrek 😂 this song made me sad when I watched shrek as a kid. Well, it still makes me sad...

This is the first time I've ever heard it sung by the man himself, and Leonard Cohen does outstandingly. May his memory be a blessing.
His voice was incredible. Rest in peace Leonard Cohen.
Wait until you hear Famous Blue Raincoat
Bless you Nick, merry christmas ❤️
I agree. most renditions are so wobbly. So far, the only one who comes near is Elvis.
Cohen's vocation ( as the priests in the Temple in Jerusalem were called) was to bless...
So many have sung this song but only one mastered it.the writer himself. A genius
Me encanta esta canción
