What a voice and vocal range! That tremolo/vibrato at the end of his phrases. Not even Donovan and Ray Davies together could conjure that up, be so affected and British and yet absolutely real.
This women with her long legs called Uschi Nerke, she wasn't a friend of Marc. Always announcing him very short and evaluate his music as pop and not as art! She hate all that groups especially T.Rex who were selling records.
Memories.....singing Ride a white Swan to myself in the playground, when it came out..and savouring the images that he conjured up in my mind. He WAS a conjurer.
Beautiful. I was there as well. Lots of us were. Maybe we were each swans 🦢 in other kids dreams, stretching through time and space and across generations.
@@wellesradio What a beautiful image! He would've loved that. Who else would write: "You've got the universe reclining in your hair..." ? I remember Paul Morley saying, years ago, that each Bolan hit was like a strung pearl . When I think of him, it strikes me that they really don't make 'em like that anymore!!
Great Stuff, Like so many Bands back then They really had their own sound and thing going on, I Love all thing’s T Rex, I Especially have a real soft spot for the Tanks Album Highway Knees ❤❤❤just takes me away on a complete nostalgia trip to a more straight forward and simpler time, Nothing comes even close to it in today’s music, the so called artists today would never have made it back then, they simply wouldn’t be good enough and that’s fact, 👊
It's a shame that many full Beat Club shows do not appear to be available. It's a crime that other great performances like this never see light of day.
Guten Abend, Beat Club! I just want to thank you for posting up all this content. It is an amazing time to be alive, when we can view all of this precious archive material at the press of a button. I can't wait to see what's next. MGF from Schottland. :-)
Beat Club/Musikladen was a great show -- they featured so much great prog rock, psychedelic and mid 60s mod and garage rock bands, many of which would not have received TV exposure in the US or Canada. The UK and France also had some decent TV music programs that also featured similar cutting edge music of the time (Top of the Pops, Old Grey Whistle Test, can't remember the name of the one from France that I've seen UA-cam videos from), but Beat Club did it for over 15 years.
Beautiful performance! What used to send me orbiting the stars was: She Was Born To Be My Unicorn - not so much a 'song' but a mesmerising creation of 'poetic harmonies'.
Such a great song that I used the title as an answer on the re-sit of one of my final exams papers. 🙂. The dead heads were not impressed but even now it's a great song.
This is probably my favourite T-Rex song and performance. It's too short though! There are some really superb chords used in this melody. I think it's the equal of Hendrix's 'Little Wing'. It's not too 'poppy'. It's subtle and rather sophisticated. It's Bolan writing a song for... himself, instead of the charts. It shows what he was capable of when he just let the music... flow out of him. Gosh, I miss him. Some of the tunes he wrote for the old Tyrannosaurus Rex were exquisitely crafted gems, both lyrically and melodically and this reminds me of them. What a tragedy it was that he died so young.Goodbye, the boppin' elf!
Marc Bolan had a wonderful way with words. The sound of them. The mystery of their meaning. He mashed up the lore and legend of J.R.R. Tolkien, with Chuck Berry rockin' rhymes, and created brilliant hybrid, sparkling language.
he looks a bit grumpy and tired which is great .He wasnt trying to hard to please. This was a great period for Marc just making his big breakthrough and German TV captures the mood perfectly.Wonderful
Just heard this track over the weekend. Love the lyrics to it...priceless!. Have to see if I can get the album this is on as the Greatest Hits one I have left this off for some insane reason.
"Life's A Gas" I could have loved you girl Like a planet I could have chained your heart To a star But it really doesn't matter at all No it really doesn't matter at all Life's a gas, I hope it's gonna last I could have built a house On the ocean I could have placed your love In the sky I could have turned you Into a priestess I could have burned Your fate in the sand
He also influenced Bowie and Mott the Hoople and most glam acts, and more recently Wilco on "The Whole Love" and Grant Lee Phillips on his Strangelet album.

German tv seems to have shown all the best rock music back in the day.
Beat Club had a STRONG cult following with the younger kids but the older people hated it! Long live Rock N Roll

The best thing is that they kept the recordings and are making them available for us to see now.
Look up The Birthday Party playing Junkyard on German TV programme 'Gotterdammerung'. It's a classic.
You know what?

Awesome
A Les Paul through a JTM45 Marshall is a wonderful thing...
Especially when Marc is playing
Marc knew his gear.
Eventually found a music shop in Sunderland UK, and discovered Orange Amps. Watch Born To Boogie.
That's the concert Rex sound.
Don’t forget the Rangemaster bringing you the booster!
