What a difference a color makes, the pergola looks so fresh and happy. Seeing the house behind you while you plant, I can picture the jasmine already.
This video brought back such good memories for me. My mom and I used to go plant shopping together for our gardens. She was a plantaholic enabler 😂. She is 92 now and can no longer garden. I miss those days.
I miss my mom so much. She taught me so much about gardening and propagation. She passed away in December of 2011 but is always with me when I garden.

You are doing such a great job Janey. It is a nightmare working with compacted soil! Awe, it's a shame that you have to cut down the gorgeous burgundy coloured plum trees. I could just imagine golden forsythia plants growing on your fence and getting the stunning contrast of the two colours. The shape of the plum trees is beautiful too. I guess if they are old and diseased you have no choice.
Love seeing the house behind you. Looking so good already. I totally believe in no dig and have been using this concept for years now but if it were me I would definitely get that soil tilled with lots of organic matter just this once since your starting with a clean slate. Prepping it now would be much easier than later. Don’t know how plant roots could grow in such compacted hard soil.
I agree, that soil is really dense and some organic matter amendment is needed for these plants. I am curious to see in a year how they do in that compacted soil.

You might want to look at John and Bob's products for amending your clay soil. I've also got some concrete-like clay soil and usually amend it with gypsum, compost, and John and Bob products prior to planting a new bed.
Too funny…my brother lives in the Apple Hill area too. It made me happy to hear you mention the area. Michael Glassman owes us a referral fee since my sister just said she is going to sign a contract with him to design her back yard. Michael’s consultation with her was a hoot.

I’ll be on the lookout for a Miss Molly Proven Winner , because I have heard that certain types of Butterfly bushes are invasive like you mentioned to us .
We send for our Miss Molly it’s beautiful you should see how many butterflies come to hang around her. Plus hummingbirds and dragonflies.

Hey Girl, the house is really looking sharp with the new paint, great job!
It might be worth your while to have someone come with a commercial rototiller to do your whole island to get you started off on the right foot, it will make planting easier and get your plants a shot at proper drainage.

Janey is definitely a creature of habit🥰 from paint to her plants but if you know what works or what you like why not keep doing those things. I will say I'm excited to see what awesome new plans she has in store next spring.

Hello from Texas ! You should replace the plum trees with crape myrtle trees for color , there are many colors to pick from !

i saw some Heliotrope at my local garden center and I had the same reaction as your mom: I couldn't smell a thing!! 😆oh and I almost killed a newly-planted buddleia this spring because I wasn't giving it enough water. Apparently, they need more water in my area (zone 10, well-draining soil, coastal climate) so I needed to really soak it. I now soak it once a week and it's doing great!
Oh boy! I just bought 33 new Bearded Iris from Schreiner’s in Oregon and planted a new bed!!!! Have been collecting them for years!!!! Love One of my favorite flowers!!! Have from white to black all colors!!!! Enjoy! Can’t wait for next spring here in NE Pa.😊

Thank you for showing the Tapien Verbena! This was one of my favorite plants we had, was such a vibrant color but unfortunately died, and had NO idea what is was because my Husband bought and planted it.
If you need a tree that makes a beautiful shade here in the valley ,try a Chinese evergreen elm. It makes a wonderful dappled shade and it doesn't have any of the problems as egulare
Beautiful progress!! I noticed some of the deck in the front has been sanded down to it’s natural look and I actually love the natural wood look on the deck with the white color on the house and the dark trim !! Ever consider the natural wood color on the decks with a sealer instead of the dark stain ? Love all that you are doing! Thanks for sharing it all❤

The property is looking good. Love the black paint. I have all three series of butterfly bush in my landscape. Just an FYI - the PW Pugster series is a non-sterile variety. THE Miss and Lo & Behold series are the sterile varieties.
I must go find some butterfly bushes this weekend😊

What a monumental moment! 😊 if you wanted another tree.. maybe some weeping cherry trees to compliment Robbie.. and they are so beautiful and romantic in the spring! Idk fruit tree aren’t my favorite but the weeping cherry is gorgeous! Fruit trees tend to be messy. Well ours are (plum and cherry)

Would it help if you asked a local farmer to till that most of the soil where you planted the butterfly bush? That way it would be easier for all you future planting and make it much more pleasant to dig holes in the future.

That larger butterfly was a gulf fritillary butterfly and the host plants for Caterpillar is the passion vine. It’s a beautiful flowers. The Caterpillar are orange with black spikes. ❤

Having lived in CA and had lots of Star Jasmine I seriously would have only put 2 - 5gal plants on that wire espallier. It will take off, I promise 😂
I agree! Our 1 plant is huge, it would make it easier on yourself (less pruning) to just do two. It's gonna be gorgeous though, and the wonderful smell perfumes the air for a good distance. Agree with the heliotropes- they are a must have. They smell like Play-Doh to me:)
