Very well done!! Bravo.. Thankyou. 2 yrs ago i bought just over 1/2 acre and did not know it was an ant farm of red devil ants that bite/hurt like crazy. also never dealt w/ japanese beetle. WOW. Maybe the worst?. The beetles and me seem to like the very same plants. It is a big challange. Again, you really reported so much, so well.
Hi Janey, although I have taken entomology during my university years I certainly have to commend you on how you presented so much information with regards to gardening! As my professor said, “insects rule the world”! 🌸❤️🇨🇦
Janey , Monterey makes two products under their Sluggo brand-Sluggo and Sluggo Plus. Sluggo is labeled only for snails and slugs, Sluggo Plus has spinosad as well as the iron phosphate in plain Sluggo and is labeled for earwigs and a few other bugs as well. So your viewers should know to purchase Sluggo Plus if they want to control both.
Out of all the videos you have ever made THIS ONE is my FAVORITE!!! I appreciate you taking the time to put this all together and explain it so well. You did a great job and it’s very helpful and interesting. 🥰👍❤️ Liz
What are your thoughts on the “Picture This” app? How accurate is it at identifying plants and diseases? What are your thoughts on using Sevin? I’m so new to gardening but I’ve been watching you, Laura and Jenny for nearly a year. I get so intimidated to garden. I don’t want to mess things up. We moved into this house less than a year ago and I’m trying to learn (the odd) plants that are here and how to adjust and expand my garden.
When I lived in Wisconsin we had invasive Lady bugs they said were introduced from Louisiana (?) to eat aphids on soybeans but it failed. They would swarm walls of my farmhouse and bite you in bed. They smelled horrible when killed and would fly into your tea and stink it up. They were a slightly different shape and color from the ones we love. It was possible to collect a gallon from a few windows facing south. I prefer Arcata slugs any day !
Are you familiar with decollate snails? They are predatory snails that eat the common brown garden snail as well as slugs. This is the only snail I have in my garden. They don’t seem to damage plants as much as the brown snail. I do still have slugs, though mostly small ones. So I have to be careful about using Sluggo in my garden.
I am terrified of caterpillars that's why I've not planted tomatoes or peppers, this is the second year but I send by husband to look and remove them from my plants 😅. I almost have a heart attack everything I see them!
Forgot to mention that you also can think of planting native plants for: 1 bring in the good bugs and the plant plays host to them. 2. You also bring in bugs that will keep the bad bugs in check as well as birds. Bringing in native plants rebuilds the planet that has been destroyed by building and we all get to learn how to live with the wild life.
Great over view on pests. I realize how difficult this class must have been..so many darn insects and pests. Thanks for informing us.😊 I'm always wondering what pest is eating the leaves of my plum and linden trees. I never see any earwigs or caterpillars, so I'm quite confused. I should look up your Identification of Pests list and check. Cheers, Jo.
Good morning. You are so full of information that I usually have to rewatch the videos. I know that you are in zone 9a but there is so much that will work up here in zone 8 in west coast bc. I have tried some of the ideas from the other videos as well as from this one and they work. Yes there are plants that I wish I could grow however there are lots of other things that will work well in my zone. Love your videos and have a wonderful day.
Thanks so much for saying that! I'm glad there are some things that are helping! Yes to your other comment native plants and birds definitely help! Have a great day my friend!
Thank you for sharing, especially the info about considering the different stages of pests! Pest management is the one area where I feel completely unsure about, mostly because I don't want to have to spray something if it's not needed. Often times my garden becomes overwhelmed by pests each year because I don't catch things early enough or feel unsure what the pest is in the early stages.
Thank you Janey for all this info. I’m in So Cal and this year I’m already battling the Aphid army! I’m wondering if the rain we’ve had has also helped up the pest population 🤨 I do have some lady bugs but I’ve never seen them wipe out the aphids completely. Those darn aphids have really stunted my Pansies that I grew from seed and they were so pretty. Right now Aphids are my #1 Nemesis!!
Great video Janey! I took Entomology in college and I actually found it fascinating! Not that I love certain bugs, but I do think they are fascinating. You did a great job presenting this information!
Thank You for sharing all your information with us. I’m learning and writing everything down just like I’m in class. You are the BEST! Thanks again 💐🌷🌼
Praying mantis really creep me out! I think the list of bugs be they good or bad are a universal list for just about everyone in the continental Untied States. Thank you Janey. It was interesting to see the larval stage of some of those bugs, most definitely don’t look like the adults. ❄️💚🙃
Don't forget that birds can help with bad pests, too! I have never seen predatory wasps, but I know I have them - one summer every tomato horn worm I found had already been infested, so I never had to worry about those for long. I almost never treat for pests outside, and nature seems to take care of itself in my garden - except the year the I believe spider mites killed my bee balm before I even knew what was happening. They never spread to the neighboring plants, though - it was so strange. Slugs and snails are the worst and I will treat for those on occasion.
@@thewanderingqueen Yep! I saw a video from a gardener once that keeps a bird feeder near his roses so the birds will go there for food and eat the japanese beetles.
Good morning, Janey! Today is Monday, hard day... And you have a video in which two hard problems at once... I'll be back on Friday, I hope there will be less problems on this day :) Have a great Monday!
Earwigs are my issue! I have even tried planting garlic and aliums around my Salvia to deter them. Also, I am going to plant marigolds to deter cabbage worms.
Very helpful video, thank you! I'm in western Washington state. The pests I have the most of are slugs, earwigs & ants. Diatomaceous earth is great for the latter two & I use slug bait. I also l choose not to have any type of petunias, since the last time I did have them they became infested with aphids. Just don't want to have high maintenance garden. I do have tree frogs & some spiders that are welcome to have whatever they like (as long as they don't come into my house 😄. Last September I saw a Praying Mantis for the first time. And last summer there was at least one Ladybug larvae on my Joe Pye Weed & was glad to have that in my yard. 🐞
I throw praying mantis out in the farm land around me, they eat everything, including baby hummingbirds & butterflies, yep everything. Not to mention I had a huge one jump at me some 40 yrs ago, and yes, I still hold a grudge. Did they mention why ladybugs show up all over inside, it's too cold, I'm guessing to put them in the garden.? Interestingly enough, I honestly had no problem with bugs, until I started planting flowers I never grew before, plant it and they will come. This is info I really needed.
@@DigPlantWaterRepeat Maybe the ladybugs inside happens over here, it's sad they don't live long enough to be put outside. I put them in my houseplants, pretty sure there isn't anything for them in those. I'll have to ask my son in law, he's in sales for an exterminator.
You have a talent for explaining complicated information in a concise and easy to understand manner. Excellent presentation.
Thank you so much for the sweet compliment. Not my favorite subject, but glad you enjoyed!
I did not know that ... I did NOT know that ... I DID NOT know that ... I DID NOT know THAT !!!

The parasitic wasp is so interesting! I found a group of them in my little blue point juniper topiary last summer. I am glad they like my topiary.
Good morning! What about grasshoppers?? Good or not so good? They are terrible here in Oklahoma zone 7A. Thanks much!
Hi Barbara! They were on the not so good list! They decimated my parents garden last year! 😫
I didn’t think this was going to be interesting but WOW was I wrong!!!! I was engrossed!
Glad you enjoyed Laura!

Preying mantis also kills hummingbirds. 🥲
wow very interesting video, keep up the videos iam learning a lot from this. 💯

For organic way to control the slugs and snails is crushed egg shells and oyster shells.
Great tip! Thanks 💗
