I've thought a bout that a lot of times and here's my take on Hartley: He is an insanely talanted driver. Just the fact that he managed to win a Le Mans 24 puts him in a category of his own. Perhaps a contraversial opinion but I do think that endurance races are a lot more demanding than F1 and by a large margin for several reasons: One is purely the amount of time you spend at 300+ km/h and LMP1(the category in which Hartley compeated) is not that far off in terms of speed compared to an F1 car. On top of that you share the same track with cars which are considerably slower than you. Yes, he drove for Porsche which historically has has conquered the endurance racing world in pretty much all categories but let's not forget that it was Porsche who picked Hartley along with names such as Bernhard, Webber and Hulkenberg. Hartley's problem in F1 was Red Bull/Torro Roso. As a Honda fan living in Japan, I can say many fans here appreciate Hartley's input in the Toro Rosso. It has been frequently said by those at Honda also, that his feedback on the PU built the foundations for the Honda engine's performance today. Hartley may not have had a stellar career, but RB and AlphaTauri sure owe him a lot.
Every now and then UA-cam recommends a race from 2018, and it feels like no matter what random race it is, I hear Crofty going "OH THERE'S AN INCIDENT, IT'S BRENDAN HARTLEY!"
I remain convinced that Red Bull’s reluctance to commit to having him race a full season in GP2 was his undoing. He only ever did 12 GP2 races across 3 seasons. And was never in the series at the start of a season. That would have seriously impacted on his growth and development.
I got the chance to meet Brandon back in 2013 at Laguna Seca during the autograph session. He was sitting next to Scott Pruett. Super shy guy honestly. Back then I didn’t know who he was, I was probably 14 years old. I believe he was driving a Daytona Prototype
Hartley was the only driver I've supported in F1 since Damon Hill... I really identified with him getting a second chance and being a driver who has really earned a place on the grid - rather than buying his way in. I wish more drivers would do other series before F1, like Andre Lotterer or Montoya
you must remember grid penalty " which followed a run of several engine changes across both cars after the introduction of Honda's third-spec engine. The upgraded engine had some teething problems when it made its debut but Red Bull and Toro Rosso took responsibility for the flurry of changes late in the year, citing the need for Honda to experiment and address issues as much as possible ahead of 2019. "You can do many tests at the dyno, but you will never create the same oscillation, you will never find out the real specific drivability of the power unit," Toro Rosso team boss Franz Tost told Autosport."
There are 2 things I will say. It can't be understated how great of an Endurance driver Hartley was he was unbelievable in Porsche's LMP1 program. Secondly, the fact he came back from such a set back being demoted from Red Bull/ Toro Rosso reserve driver (only for Alguersuari to get an F1 race seat) rebuild his career and become the first New Zealand-er in F1 in over 30 years is a brilliant story. I think he has a lot to be proud of. I would of liked to see him have a crack in Indycar instead of going back to the WEC I think he would of done really well there.
How unlucky Hartley was? He was signed to drive for Chip Ganassi Racing at IndyCar for 2018 before Toro Rosso called him and for whatever reason he got, he chose forfeit it for the latter instead. How bad sacrificing contract to race a top level american team for a junior b-spec team could be? Hartley was outpaced by Gasly and Booted after only a season while Ganassi took 2 indycar championship with Scott Dixon at 2018 and 2020, and in 2021 still one of the championship contender with 3 of 4 of it's driver are on top 10 of the standings, and one of them (Alex Palou, driving the car that was supposedly Hartley drive at 2018) leading the championship...
Now that you mentioned it, That's probably Hartley biggest blunder. Because after he got sacked by Toro Rosso, he wasn't employed and he only manage to get a seat at Formula E for Backmarkers Dragon Racing and even that he's only raced for 5 races. Had he joined IndyCar instead, he'd should've been a race winner. Just look at Ericsson this year
Toro Rosso actually had to pay Ganassi an undisclosed amount of money to release Hartley from the contract literally a day or so after it was signed lol
@@Posirep Makes you wonder why would they do that only for them to boot hartley afterwards... Well not the first time Toro Rosso did that, as they did the same with Albon a year after. As i remember Albon was already signed for Nissan Formula E team before they come in.
My favourite thing to do is compare f1 drivers in their f1 races vs other races. Liam lawson is a great example of the skill level for formula series. In his first race in dtm he won the race. Alonso steps out of the mclaren after so many struggles, wins le man's, and then almost wins indy 500 before engine issues. Grosean, a mediocre driver in f1 get his indy car pole in the first few races. It does show that the level for F1/formula series drivers is crazy high in regards to motorsport World. I'm sure their are lots more examples
Ah yeah, Chris Amon mentions. The man, I think it was Mario Andretti had said, that had he been an undertaker, people would stop dying, such was his bad luck.
given that he'd been out of single seaters for so long I think he did an admirable job. had a lot of bad luck and deserved to have another season IMHO. actually went faster after he had a haircut! there have definitely been a lot worse drivers in F1!
Pretty sure that one's just "Alonso." Fernando did unto him what Max has done to every teammate since Ricciardo. Add in Mclaren insisting their car was great and you have a driver made to look bad in a car that just didn't give him a chance. Then desperation sets in. Would be great to see Josh's take on it though.
I will add Brendon was not only unlucky (accidents and human error etc) but he also had a weak personality. Together, it is enough to undo someone with skill (negated by bad luck on paper) as other factors come to play to sway the decision making. Not only in F1 but in every working career strong management relationship through "Personality strength" and "Political strength" is required to survive. I and many will say "Work" is only half the job, the other half is "Political".
I was surprised Josh didn't mention Hartley's IndyCar contract. Other comment already explained about the debacle because he already sign a seat that podium and race win is a possible on regular basis just like his hayday on LMP1, even more so when he's supposedly teammate was a New Zealand's racing legend Scott Dixon. Instead he throw away just because he wants to race in F1, and look what he got with his F1 contract...
So relatively unknown fact in the F1 world maybe, but Brendon Hartley was tapped on the shoulder by top IndyCar owner Chip Ganassi to drive the #10 for 2018. But at the 11th hour, the opportunity to drive full-time in F1 with Toro Rosso came in. And we know how that went. Ganassi instyead went with Felix Rosenqvist, who left the seat a few years later. However... The #10 in IndyCar just won the 2021 Championship with Alex Palou at the helm. Could Hartley have brought that car success earlier? Could it be he instead of Palou as an IndyCar Champion. Gotta love those butterfly effects and alternate timelines in the motorsports world.
I know that Red Bull put a lot of money into Motorsport, not only at the top but throughout the junior levels too. But fucking hell, do they chew up and spit out drivers!
I never rated him as a sprint race driver. But he is actually one of the best prototype drivers going. Some of his middle of the night stints at Le Mans have been amazing.
I had no idea he actually got a taste of F1 equipment far earlier then 2017 (Even driving the Mercedes). Also, props for remembering Jaime's Music career (His debut song is still slaps BTW) Maybe Hartley is yet another case of someone who was more of a Sports car driver then F1 (which makes it criminal that as far as I'm aware, nobody has picked up up for a LMH or LMDH seat). Also if I'm honest: That dude's hair was Majestic. Its on the same level of swag as Mike Thackwell and James Hunt.
I first heard of him when he was driving for the Starworks team in GrandAm, and he certainly helped drag them up the order. I believe it also did the same with Murphy prototypes in the ELMS around the same time.
I'd actually like to see a video on why things didn't work out for Sebastian Bourdais. If he's known by anyone in the US, it's for his 30+ IndyCar wins and 4 consecutive Champ Car titles, and his accomplishments in sports car racing. Always thought it was a shame F1 didn't work out, since he'd succeeded at so much else.
For Le Mans the cars could compete but I don't know how well they would do because F1 cars wouldn't be able to last the full 24 hours if they were going flat out as they cover nearly half the F1 race distance for the season, so their engines would probably be destroyed if they ran at full race pace so would need to reduce power so the prototypes might be quicker over a race stint. The cars would also need headlights as you need them one full the whole race even during day. And they need to be closed cockpit cars and have enough aera for 2 seats in the cockpit. The F1 cars would need to change tyres more, if we are going off F1 tyres not Le Mans tyres, but wouldn't have to refuel as much as they have bigger fuel tanks.
Things i noticed: that bright blue torro rosso is soooo good looking. Gasly is legit. I think he’s got a long career in f1 especially after his performance this year.
Hartley getting the toro rosso drive is the main reason i became interested in f1. It was gutting to see him loose his seat but its understandable. Still love f1 and with the talent lawson has been showing i doubt we’ll have to wait long for another kiwi on the grid
Surely on of the best races from down under would be Scott dixon in the indycar series and already classed as a legend even with him still competing at the top of the series?
Hartley is a awesome Driver but when you are awesome you don't have to Go to F1. In F1 only the top teams win. F1 is big advert not more. The FIA is broken. He should go to Nascar or IndyCar.
I feel like this video proves two things: 1) Hartley was and is a baller in sportscar racing, and 2) Helmut Marko and RBR are amazing career destroyers. You hire a Le Mans winner and then decide you want him gone after FIVE RACES? Then promote his teammate to the senior RBR team, then demote HIM after half a season, rush up a replacement too quickly, then demote HIM out of F1 altogether after just one season? Jeez. Happy that Hartley was able to land back on his feet in sportscar racing, where he knows he'll always be a proven commodity. And he's still only 31 despite feeling like he's been around forever. Almost feels like him just getting to race in F1 was a big achievement for him, and something he'll cherish forever. Just being able to say 'F1 driver' on his resume is enough to be proud of. And let's be honest, he got to drive possibly the sexiest looking Toro Rosso racecars of all time. Who's the real winner here?
Whenever I hear "GT specialist" I think of drivers who realized they weren't good enough for single seaters big leagues and changed discipline rather than aimlessly chasing for a seat or staying in reserve and test roles. Regarding Hartley, I think most of his crashes and mechanical woes were kind of self inflicted by being used to driving sturdier and more reliable machinery...he didn't seem to know how to make F1 tyres last and often found himself between another car and a wall rather than going for clean moves...and he killed suspensions.
30 seconds for screwing up the formation like Norris did this year, ten seconds for sending another driver to the hospital while not even attempting to use all the space available to you.
He's the Jolyon Palmer of New Zealand - a successful career and had F1 potential but fell flat when he finally got there. Plus, we wouldn't hear the end of it from Aussies and Ricciardo fans if a kiwi outperformed him.
Brendon was unlucky. Not even a question. Despite the fact he had been waiting for a seat for basically SIX years I thought he still showed fantastic talent. And he justifies that every race in WEC.

This is the first video where my name is in the Patreon credits. I have to say, this is very exciting.
Give him chance to play or sing in a glam hair rock metal band, he deserves it.
No idea but I assume you're gonna tell me :)
Why is it not call
"WTF happened to Brendon Hartley"
There are 2 things I will say. It can't be understated how great of an Endurance driver Hartley was he was unbelievable in Porsche's LMP1 program. Secondly, the fact he came back from such a set back being demoted from Red Bull/ Toro Rosso reserve driver (only for Alguersuari to get an F1 race seat) rebuild his career and become the first New Zealand-er in F1 in over 30 years is a brilliant story. I think he has a lot to be proud of. I would of liked to see him have a crack in Indycar instead of going back to the WEC I think he would of done really well there.
I'm surprised you've not done a video on Scott Dixon yet
Loving this NZ chat Josh! RIP Akl house prices...Great vid as always!
I’d love to see a video about Kyle Larson or Sergei Sirotkin
Formula One is the most unsentimentally hyper-competitive of environments, it spits out so many potential champions on a never ending conveyor belt.
Endurance racing is a better bet as a driver tbh
Classical red bull, cuts them off before they can really develop, nearly happened to gasly if he doesn't recover when he goes back too tauri
Ah yeah, Chris Amon mentions. The man, I think it was Mario Andretti had said, that had he been an undertaker, people would stop dying, such was his bad luck.
given that he'd been out of single seaters for so long I think he did an admirable job. had a lot of bad luck and deserved to have another season IMHO. actually went faster after he had a haircut! there have definitely been a lot worse drivers in F1!
we need a "what happened to Stoffel Vandoorne in F1?"
I’ve been waiting for the Hartley mention
I will add Brendon was not only unlucky (accidents and human error etc) but he also had a weak personality. Together, it is enough to undo someone with skill (negated by bad luck on paper) as other factors come to play to sway the decision making.
Not only in F1 but in every working career strong management relationship through "Personality strength" and "Political strength" is required to survive.
I and many will say "Work" is only half the job, the other half is "Political".
Watching Hartley in F1 was painful because I know that he could've done better. What a sad time.
"A high Randy Lanier couldn't offer him" LOL
Seriously one of the best guys on UA-cam, thanks for the great video.JDS in AZ usa
I too always felt that Hartley was more unlucky than just plain "bad". I'm happy for him that his sportscar career has been much more successful.
10:30 the yellow highlight josh used made the french flag look like the belgium flag
Josh, love the content but we need more of it, especially with this season ;)
Jeb doing his best Hartley impression was pure gold
Im here because Lord himself just finished testing Alfa Romeo F1 car and this channel is about to explode !!!
Idea: WTF happened to Mike Thackwell
That lad would be very interesting to cover
great video as always josh keep them coming
To be Honest this guy is the best f1 youtuuber ever in my opinion, even better than wtf1, etc. so funny as well
and easy to understand
I was surprised Josh didn't mention Hartley's IndyCar contract. Other comment already explained about the debacle because he already sign a seat that podium and race win is a possible on regular basis just like his hayday on LMP1, even more so when he's supposedly teammate was a New Zealand's racing legend Scott Dixon. Instead he throw away just because he wants to race in F1, and look what he got with his F1 contract...
Solid Randy Lanier reference! 👍
Interesting fact is Hartley was signed to drive in Indycar with CGR prior to being offered the 2018 seat at Toro Rosso
2:36 and 11:30 as a 46 year old dude who has sported his long mane for 30 years, I resent that.
He looked cool.
I know that Red Bull put a lot of money into Motorsport, not only at the top but throughout the junior levels too.
But fucking hell, do they chew up and spit out drivers!
He was highly rated by the Honda technicians in his feedback on the development of the eng.....power unit.
I never rated him as a sprint race driver. But he is actually one of the best prototype drivers going. Some of his middle of the night stints at Le Mans have been amazing.
11:05 who the hell is Aiden Jackson?
06:12
Brendan: "Hey Helmut, it's Brendan. Brendan Hartley..."
Helmut: "Oh no..."
The fact you also said Aotearoa does it for me ❤️ anyways love the content keep it up!
so cringe
@@laki5717 so is your dad kido
I had no idea he actually got a taste of F1 equipment far earlier then 2017 (Even driving the Mercedes). Also, props for remembering Jaime's Music career (His debut song is still slaps BTW)
Maybe Hartley is yet another case of someone who was more of a Sports car driver then F1 (which makes it criminal that as far as I'm aware, nobody has picked up up for a LMH or LMDH seat).
Video Ideas:1 Could F1 race at le mans
2 Could F1 return to Indianapolis road course/will F1
I have almost thought Hartley and Palmer to be partly unlucky but have never been able identify them between unlucky or bad
At this rate Josh is gonna cover all Kiwi drivers to have ever turned a wheel in a racing car before he does a profile on Hülkenberg.
The wait for Dixon's Driver profile begins.
Been waiting for this one. I really though Brendon had a great chance on F1. I hope he makes it back one day if he wants.
Surely on of the best races from down under would be Scott dixon in the indycar series and already classed as a legend even with him still competing at the top of the series?
Have you ever done a video on Mike Thackwell? Seems to have had an interesting story and a bout of bad luck in F1.
Hilarious thanks for this reminder I was shooting at Suzuka in 2018 has some great photographs of Hartley on the hairpin turn.
Hartley is a awesome Driver but when you are awesome you don't have to Go to F1.
In F1 only the top teams win.
F1 is big advert not more.
The FIA is broken.
He should go to Nascar or IndyCar.
8:52 and here we go jinxing again……
What a coincidence. I just watched a video about Brendon Hartley today and then this came up.
When Brendon Hartley became a champion in WEC: *Helmut Marko disliked that*
Agreed, I blame red bull, they treat drivers like dirt
You ipnotize me everytime. You are great
Please make a video about one of my favorite driver juan pablo montoya. I think he's really underrated
A great video, but you really do need to buy (or even make) a pop filter for your mic.
1:36 I have been in that car as a kid I had no idea he was going to be a le mans champion
3:53 What's that black thing on the car that has the Mercedes Benz logo on it?
Whenever I hear "GT specialist" I think of drivers who realized they weren't good enough for single seaters big leagues and changed discipline rather than aimlessly chasing for a seat or staying in reserve and test roles.
Regarding Hartley, I think most of his crashes and mechanical woes were kind of self inflicted by being used to driving sturdier and more reliable machinery...he didn't seem to know how to make F1 tyres last and often found himself between another car and a wall rather than going for clean moves...and he killed suspensions.
the ads were timed so perfectly in this video
30 seconds for screwing up the formation like Norris did this year, ten seconds for sending another driver to the hospital while not even attempting to use all the space available to you.
He's the Jolyon Palmer of New Zealand - a successful career and had F1 potential but fell flat when he finally got there.
Plus, we wouldn't hear the end of it from Aussies and Ricciardo fans if a kiwi outperformed him.
we still have Chappel and the underarm ball incident up our sleeves...lmao
