- Bruno Senna is not as well remembered as his uncle, Ayrton. Nevertheless, the Brazilian managed to race within Formula 1 from 2010 to 2012. Although, the story around this man's career is riddled in triumph and tragedy. And heading into his 20's, was never meant to be racing at all.

The story of Bruno Senna is one of the biggest what-if stories in modern F1. After Ayrton’s death, he never set foot in a kart again til he was 20 and spent 10 years out of racing - which is way too long for a top-level athlete. He missed probably the most important development years of a drivers career. Even when he got to F1, he gave up 15 practice sessions to Valtteri Bottas which meant most of the time, he was playing catch-up to Maldonado. Combined with the fact that Pastor won a Grand Prix that year, Valtteri replaced him in 2013 and I felt he never really got a real chance to prove what he could really do. Great vid Josh

I am a fan of Kubica since 2007 (I even met him and talked to him, super chilled guy) but after Schumacher every Ferrari driver wasn't that much big of a deal in terms of championship (except Alonso). I hate to say it but Ferrari would make his career go down a lot with 2 times WDC in the first seat. But what if he had offer from Mercedes? That's the biggest what if for me.
Bruno Senna is a good driver and a good human being,I met him in Interlagos in 2019, and he treated me very well, a very nice guy indeed,and a hell of a driver
Similar story here, met him in the pitlane at Silverstone 2011 and he was super friendly and approachable.
I met him at Truxton when he was in British F3, totally agree a good guy, and I was chuffed to meet him and say hello

@@schembri317 you can die in many ways. Accidents are a pretty common way to go. But then that's accident, you can't predict it. You can avoid racing and, frankly, not die doing that. Yes, it certainly robbed Bruno a better shot at the top, but then again, after losing a family members from racing, I think it's logical to stop. If Bruno also died while racing, the senna name would be a cursed name on the racing scene.

The fact that he did not drive competitively most of his early years and yet made to F1 being a competitive mid field driver is mind blowing. The talent runs in that family and we can expect more in future generations for sure.

Also he could've been more than midfield driver. Maybe he was no Lewis or Kimi in the making, but I don't doubt he could have performed as well or better than Massa, Grosjean, Perez, etc.
Even though I was never alive to watch Ayrton Senna, I still admire his talent behind the wheel. A talent that passed to his nephew. Bruno might not have been a world champion, or a race winner, but I still respect him deeply for following his dreams.
Now you starting to picture how much pressure mick is having for being a son of a 7x WDC everyone is expecting him to be like his dad without stop to think and let mick race in his own ways

There could be a whole series of 'what ifs'.
Nico was rather unlucky in that he was too good to be a main team second driver but not good enough to be the Main Man, if that makes sense. Most of the reasons he didn’t get podiums are down to his own bottling it, yes. However, he was the favourite for the Ferrari seat in 2013 and Alonso apparently said no. The same for 2014, but less so, as Kimi was a bigger name and the car was a dog anyway. His big story was Mercedes but Lewis was the preferred choice and he’d probably not have beaten Rosberg to a title and would have been dumped from the team when bigger drivers wanted the seat as they became dominant… but he’d have got solid results while he was there. As it was, he was just at the head of the midfield and that’s it.
robert kubica is one of, if not the biggest "what if" in f1 history
Bruno no doubt had talent and his career would’ve most certainly been very different had Ayrton not been killed.

interest in motorsport in brazil took a major hit after senna's death, i'm pretty sure lots of kids also stopped their racing careers after that, just like bruno.

Bruno was always behind the 8 ball after his uncle's death.
Bruno made his debut in a car at 21. At 21, Max had 8 GP wins. The 10 years of racing lost cannot be understated and it is a testament to his skill that he has accomplished as much as he has.

This is really the living representation of fear being taken to an extent of interfering with someone’s career. Not his but from his family. Tbf they had very solid reasons, but the chance that was upon his development. As said in the video, this has to be THE what if if not one for the biggest what ifs in motorsport

I feel sorry for Mick Schumacher, he will always be compared to Michael. Same with Bruno Senna, If Vettel and Hamilton ever have kids that get into F1 they will always be compared to Their family name.
The name helped him with getting into F1. De Vries won F2 and didn't find the seat in F1.
@@peterfighter in all fairness, de vries wasn’t in a driver academy (unless I’m wrong) and most lower down teams had full lineups for 2020 and he’s now with Mercedes in FE which could lead to an F1 drive eventually. Whereas mick was part of FDA and as a F2 winner is almost guaranteed a seat with an academy. Like Russell was. Like leclerc.
Nyck was in McLaren's Driver Academy in 2012 or something. He participated on a McLaren Tooned episode at the time.
@@redbadger2656 He was in Mclaren young drivers programme during his ART drive in F2.. he won in 2019.. then he joined the mercedes junior programme along with stoffel vandoorne.. they were reserve drivers in f1 and full time formula E drivers.. there was no place for mercedes to keep him in f1.. their customer teams already had contracted drivers.. checo and lance at racing point george and latifi at williams.. there was no place else.. so he was sent to formula E..

Haven't watched til the end yet. But i know that one of those massive cheerings happened here in Argentina in 1995, on our first GP of the decade, just one year after Ayrton's departure. We'll forever love our brother 💛💚

The fact that after Ayrton's death his family decided to not allow him to drive, for which I don't blame them. Because of that he lost most of the tricks that Ayrton gave him. Also he was way too old to have a long career minimum, even less possible that it would be successful.
Bruno's father was also killed in a motorbike accident - 2 years after Ayrton.
The fact he was still able to get to F1, and be very respectable in the midfield is even more impressive knowing this.
Bruno is a real great guy - I was in an iRacing server with him once and he actually took the time to speak to me, answer my questions and even gave me tips on how to improve my driving!

I'm totally convinced that at that dark weekend in Imola we lost 3 great racing drivers, one of them a legend and one of them a potential legend.

Funny story here from Brazil: I lived my whole life surrounded by Senna’s references. Even my father gave me the name Leonardo because of Ayrton’s brother (long story). Anyway, once I was skating in an Avenue in Sao Paulo called Sumare, and I passed by someone who as casually jogging at the same lane. I saw that it was familiar, but then I looked back just to be sure who it was, it was Bruno! I called my father a few moments later and said “dad, I just overtook Senna!”. After a while, I saw him again, happily jogging. People who met him around here always say that he is nice and very gentle.
It may not seem too much, but many brazilians have Senna deep in their hearts, and I supported Bruno throughout his carrer in F1. It is a good memory for me and I hope he took this as a friendly joke.

It won’t. The biggest issue with Bruno was his long hiatus from motorsport, which meant he didn’t have the same development and experience as other drivers, whereas Mick has been involved in motorsport in some capacity for pretty much his entire life. He’ll be fine, don’t worry

that very end, almost had me in tears. I believe if Ayrton would have never died on that weekend, he would have won the 1994 and 1995 title, then went to Ferrari, before retirement. He did always say if we think he is fast, just wait to see his nephew.

Thanks for the video, man. As a brazilian that woke up early on Sundays to watch Ayrton win races and talk about how Bruno could succeed following his steps, this was a very interesting take on what could've happened to Bruno's career. And I gotta say: the ending brought some tears to my eyes. Thank you and may Lord Mahaveer always bring his blessings upon you.
I can guarantee that not having the experience in karting as a kid seriously hindered his skill. It's honestly amazing that he made it to F1 regardless and actually goes to show that Ayrton was right and Bruno has a huge natural talent. It's a shame he didn't get the Brawn seat because we all know who bought that team after and who knows, would Senna have been an early Mercedes driver?

Great video. I always felt Bruno deserved another season, he was clearly getting better every year. It will always be a story of what if, but at least he made it to F1 which is still an achievement in itself.
As a sports fan, I love when he throws in those analogies and shots at other sports teams. As a Pirates fan, thin ice, Josh. Razor thin.
Whenever I hear the name Ayrton Senna even though I was only 4 years old during the race at Imola '94, watching F1 and its historical races, and reading about so many champions and seeing their battles, I feel a personal unique admiration to Ayrton and sometimes I woke up on May 1st praying to god to somehow alter the reality of the May 1st 1994 just to see him race in the V10 era... Hearing the name Ayrton Senna brings a tear to my eye and a cloud over my head because watching those videos about him and his commitment to succeed by taking it upon himself, other driver's sorrows, is in my opinion the most humble character of his life... I know he is racing above in the heavens on a more even terms with the best names in motorsports history... I know he'll be out-qualifying them every single time and that's how I keep him in my memory... 😍😍😍😍

Almost all decent midfielders in F1 is a curious case of what if's. Hell, even some champions is.
Even some in the top teams are what-ifs. How much more success would Barrichello, Massa and Bottas have achieved if they had been able to race for themselves and not for their team mate? If their teams had planned their strategies and designed their cars around them instead of Schumi and Lewis?

I briefly met Bruno as a 13 year old at Donington in 2005 in the middle of an F3 race. I went to the toilet and was walking back to where my mum was and in the opposite direction walking my way was Bruno Senna! I asked him what happened, not expecting anything more than a grunt and a shrug of the shoulders... but instead he smiled and said "ahh I crashed". I responded by saying something like "ohh well, better luck next time" and he laughed and said "thanks man" (or something to that effect). Not the most exciting interaction, but that's the point. He just binned it in his second F3 race and was curtious enough to humour some spotty little oik and treat me as a normal guy. He was just so down to earth and you wouldn't think he was the nephew of Ayrton and had the burden of that second name... A real credit to the sport!
It's hard not get a little choked up when you see how much Brazilian fans loved Ayrton, and then extend that beautiful warmth to Bruno.
I'm a Brazilian, and the Senna Fandom is the fucking whole nation. So you imagine the pressure of a country waiting you to start in F1.
He's a solid pair of hands in the WEC, that's for sure!

Always saddens me hearing about Bruno. The IF is always what gets to me. It’s one of those things where I wish I could see that timeline where Ayrton walked away, retires. Trains and teaches Bruno everything, and possible become world champion himself.

Very few things have made me angrier than when I saw someone online claiming that Bruno's results were "bringing shame on the Senna name, and proving that Bruno doesnt deserve to use it."
People forget that F1 drivers are humans sometimes.
Bruno's career for me was all around impressive considering he never got the proper time in karts.
i just imagine how good he would have been had the Senna family not blocked his racing ambitions as a youth.
there was definitely some genetic component to him being as serviceable as he was.
Bruno Senna is a tragedy to me. The 10 years absence stumped him. Like starting school at 14. So I think he did alot, considering his peers were flat out racing all that time. Great video keep them coming 👏

It will always be a what if, but his career has been super strong in sports cars and in the enduro scene he is very well respected, Sadly to most F1 is the only motorsport there is but he is a true driver and well kept the Senna name strong in motorsport for many years to come. It always brought a smile to my face when i Saw Prost V Senna on track in sports cars.

Senna was arguably the last Brazilian sportsman to transcend to a "hero" status in the country. Yeah, more even so than Ronaldo and Ronaldinho et al.
If you've got some time on your hands, look up the Senninha brand. Comic books ("quadrinhos"), apparel ("roupa"), sneakers ("tênis")... They were the bomb and virtually every 90s kid had some Senninha product growing up in Brazil!
What a video, anything related to Senna name is special and make me share masculine water throughmy eyes, i feel extremely sad that bruno's carrer in f1 didn't go far enough, but as said, f1 is a big WHAT IF! I m glad to see his success in other categories!

As a Brazilian, I never wanted a driver to succeed in Formula 1 as much as Bruno. Anyway, I just think it's terrible for him to be compared to Ayrton just because of his last name, even though it's inevitable.

The thing that hurts the most is how much Senna was the F1 God in Brazil - he was a national hero, popularizing a sport that is usually only present/popular in high socio-economic countries in a low socio-economic country with a huge dichotomy of wealth extremely evident.
F1 in Brazil died with Senna and we have never had any such popularity rival that of football/soccer since then. He was also extremely helpful socially and economically towards the Brazilian population, and his work ethic and success was a massive inspiration to all.
Unfortunately, Brazil misses this kind of quiet, legendary work-ethic and successful individual in sports as we have very expressive, bohemian, successful figures

I have a strong feeling that if Ayrton hadn't died, Bruno would be a champion in F1. Ayrton pushed really hard when he was teaching sports to Senna's family little children. Bruno would have to have a very high permormance results.

Bruno was still racing in WEC for Rebellion last year, but they haven't entered this year & I have no idea what Bruno is doing this year. I wonder if Ferrari will pick him up for their 2023 Hypercar as he has plenty experience in the category and it would be nice to have a Senna in a Ferrari at last.
I remember that almost every Formula 1 fan in Brazil was extremely confident that Bruno was going to race in F1 (after all, he was the nephew of a guy who is treated like a national hero in the country). It was kind of sad to see him full of difficulties in the division.

i was born years after Ayrton's passing and even then, whenever i wanted to race karts at the *local* kart track, my parents were like "did you not see what HAPPENED to ayrton when he was racing SUPER FAST?????" and i never had the intention of racing, just wanted to drive fast lol
so i guess i can relate to his family being overprotective and not wanting him racing.. everything here in brazil still carries his name, man is a legend
