I'm interested in the unrecognized hand signals the enemy pilot makes. Thought he held up three fingers twice, then a fist. So; 3, 3, 0? Or 3, 3, the letter A in sign language? Or 3, 3, rock (beats scissors)?
I liked when Rooster said "Talk to me, dad." before hitting the afterburner. The idea that Goose's "presence" was encouraging not just Maverick, but his son too was a nice touch.
That had a double meaning. He said talk to me dad, but then the voice he heard was Maverick’s. Maverick later says that he tried to be a father to Rooster after Goose died. Then at the end Maverick says “thanks for saving my life”, and Rooster says “it’s what my dad would have done”. That has double meaning, not only remembering Goose. He’s acknowledging that Maverick saved his life and his role as a father figure.
I was at the edge of my seat throughout the movie. I was not born when the first part came out, but i watched it when i was 12 years old and loved it ever since. So, when i heard Maverick was ours it made me call in sick for work and go watch the movie first. 😂
The opening scene was good, but not so good of the original in my opinion. The afterburners of the f- 14's looks way cooler and also that purple/orange sky i missed, but the way the planes landing on the carrier was better with that cable system very detailed on screen.
For me the best line was from Rooster. While him and Maverick were in the F-14 evading enemy planes Rooster said, "come on Mave show me some of that pilot shit!" This was a line that Goose said in the original...love it!
I just saw the movie today. It was SOOO GOOD!!! I've seen the original so many times over the years, I can quote it. I didn't think the sequel could come close to how good the original was. But somehow, they managed to do it. Excellent movie!! So many great nods to the original movie. Loved it.
More impressive is that they didn't choose to destroy the original character in the process or engage pure stupid mode in order to subvert expectations. They exceeded expectation by giving people the movie they wanted.
One of my favorite scenes was the Maverick-Iceman discussion. The end of it where Iceman says to Maverick-So who is the better pilot? and Mac says -Hey we are having a really nice moment here-Let’s not ruin it! Freaking Awesome! The entire movie was really really well done! Seen it 3 times now 💪🏼🏆😎
Val Kilmer having throat cancer means he can't really continue his acting career but Cruise working him into this film was pure genius and it was so great how they handled the situation. Such a great tribute!
I’m about to see it 3 times. My dad wants to see it now and he’s normally very particular with what movies he wants to see. Excited to see it for a third time possibly in IMAX
It's something not spoken ever but the reason why he (Maverick) hasn't advanced passed O-6 (Captain in the navy) is mainly due to his love of flying. Once you make it to admiral in the navy, you're behind a desk FOREVER aka til you retire. Hence his hesitation to be promoted.
Great point! He’s still living the dream while they’re pushing pencils. Iceman knew what his value was even if the other top brass had doubts. I did feel like Warlock was rooting for him and gave him some excellent coaching and encouragement when Cyclone seemed to be hoping he’d fail. IMO, Cyclone and Cain were representative of the kind of lifers that should really consider retirement. Pete’s only one promotion away from flag officer ( Admiral). In the end he proves he’s a great leader because unlike Cyclone, he knew his pilots had the talent for mission success where the Admiral’s strategy would have gotten them all killed. Making Hangman the backup gave him a much needed ego check. Finally, he sacrificed himself to save Rooster which was the tipping point in the younger pilot’s evolution. Without a thought, his instincts took over and he went back for his mentor and saved his life! If there is another movie it seems logical that Mav finally accepts a promotion that he’s certainly earned and Rooster and Hangman become the main characters.
Dante, Spot on. I was in the Navy for 6 years in an air unit. I often heard pilots refer to a day of flying as a non-work day. That's a fun day. When the job is no longer fun, they'll quit. Maverick would have been that kind of pilot. Let's also mention that being an O-6 is nothing to sneeze at. Lots of officers retire as O-4 or O-5, and those are considered respectable ranks.
It was refered to multiple times with references about where he belonged (flying) and even a flat out statement on the aircraft carrier telling Mav "this is where you belong."
@@استاذدانيال You get it and thanks for your service. I too was once in the navy, stationed on the Carl Vinson. I once sat in a Q&A session (100 junior sailors) with a one star admiral and someone asked what he missed the most. He said he missed flying helo's but he had to make a choice, continue flying or try to attain more rank. I never forgot that.
I still can't believe how completely they nailed this. Revisting a 35 year old movie, honoring the first movie and it's cast, respecting the real world events and technological shifts since then and making it feel new, all at the same time.....it seemed impossible, Of course, it helps that Tom Cruise and Jennifer Connelly both found the fountain of youth.
Actually Tom Cruise reminded me a lot of Viper in the original movie as far as evaluating his charges and pushing them to the limits of their skills and capabilities. What we had the advantage of is seeing how in some ways Maverick was still a loose cannon but in other ways his maturity and vision concerning being the best of the best had matured so much as compared to his younger days in the original Top Gun. Maverick knowing that for the pilots to go into this mission with a chance THEY had to believe not only they could do it but they could get out to see the sun rise the next day. When Maverick did his rogue mission run in even a shorter time than the pilots would have it was not for him but for the pilots to see it could be done and build their confidence. Maverick probably figured he would be court marshaled for the stunt but he could live with that knowing the pilots would go into the mission believing they had a chance. This was imho the exact reason Iceman used his pull to get Maverick in the instructor role to head up this mission. Ice knew if there was a pilot on this planet that had the skills, the balls and could figure out how to pull this mission off AND give the pilots a shot to return alive it was Maverick and no one else. I saw references to the first movie from the beginning to the end and all were well done, and for any fan of the first movie and its characters this film played the heart strings and honestly I have never seen a Tom Cruise movie where he conveyed the amount of emotion in a role as he did in this movie when it came to memories of Goose and for Rooster Gooses son. And Jennifer Connely was the perfect match to play Mavericks love interest which also tied back into the first film. I think this is the best movie to be made in at least the last decade if not longer! One final thing they did not try to play on the woke angle which was another relief!
I believe that Penny actually rang the bell, not because Mav "disrespected" her, but because of the last line of the rules; he put his cell phone on the bar.
Penny or Jennifer Connelly was the icing on the cake for this film. Her screen presence was a welcomed sight. Sometimes Hollywood does get it right. The casting of Connelly was spot on.
It took a day or two to move on from nostalgia after watching this movie.. As a man in his 40s, learning to fly, the whole movie was filled pure emotions of joy, goosebumps, love for aviation and above all missing my teenage days when I used to hear the sound tracks of Top Gun, back to back. As I am writing this comment, I can hear Danger Zone playing in my mind. This sequel is GOLD, a gift for cherishing my memories! ✈️❤️
Small Easter egg I don’t feel like most noticed in the bar scene when somebody queues up the jukebox they pick track 86 A reference to the year the original was released
Maverick essentially fills Viper's role in Top Gun: Maverick. In Top Gun, Viper confides in Jester about how to handle Maverick, commenting that he served with his father. Viper proceeds to mentor Maverick the rest of the movie. In the sequel, Maverick is unsure how to handle Rooster and confides in Ice Man for guidance, and mentors Rooster the rest of the movie.
He was trying to mentor rooster his whole life after Goose died tho. He even says as much saying he’s been trying to be the father figure for rooster. Try again
I guess if you think about it this way then I guess it kind of makes sense but someone who fills that role more is Cyclone. Cyclone always stepped in to stop Maverick on everything.
That's right..Carol's quote in the bar (Goose & his wife's names are Nick & Carol Bradshaw) while discussing Penny was: Carol: "Yeah..He told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin...He tells me about ALL of them Maverick.." Mav: "Oh, does he.."? (Mav gives Goose a look, which Goose pretends not to notice). Carol: "And how my little Angel Goose, goes home early for church..but you.. you always go home with the hot women".
I still can not get over how good this movie actually turned out! And, I think this was a beautiful tribute to Mr. Scott, I was afraid Top Gun: Maverick was just going to be a terrible throw back cheese fest, but it was so much more than that, and I am so glad we finally got the finished product.
This was one of the best movies in a long time, the nostalgia is epic and the movie making phenomenal with the right ingredients to become another classic. Hoping Maverick can set the example leading to a renaissance in Hollywood away from the boredom of many movies produced lately.
Honest question ( and not being rude ) why would nostalgia be fun . I'm sick of it . I have two boys 13 and 16 . They've never seen the original, but had to answer questions. That's not a fun movie experience. Same on the opposite end I hate Marvel movies. Why should I have to have movie's explained to me . Just make a good film Hollywood.
@@feck2594 nostalgia is all we got with the current state of that world. The west is falling, morality is at an all-time low - so escaping that for a few hours to revisit the 80s and our youth was just what the doctor ordered.
i loved growing up in the eighties and the first Top Gun was one of the iconic souvenires from that awesome era. I had the chills the whole time during part two’s opening scene. Thank you Tom Cruise and the entire cast and production team for putting me on the edge of my seat again like the old days! Top Gun Maverick is OUTSTANDING!!! 🎖👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
This is absolutely the best movie. I'm older than him(72) and I am Tom cruse, 1968 Navy Vietnam but not a pilot, but he made me famous. Top gun pilots and Navy seals are the best bad asses around. Maybe someday I can meet him.
@@tomcruse5731 WoW! You Sir, are one in a million! Like what are the chances?! Anyways, my respect to you and I guess this is tribute to your service as well as all your other men and women.
Maverick movie is a respectful tribute, a homage to Tony Scott and to the original Top Gun movie. Seeing Tom and Val in this movie I can see that it is not just acting, they are grateful to be apart of this passion project as the original made them into movie stars. I felt adrenaline while watching this movie, a worthy and respectful sequel or remix as you said to the first movie. It was both action packed and heatfelt. I thank all involved for delivering entertainment we could enjoy that didnt brow beat or lecture us, the kept the focus on the movie being a movie, not preaching anything. It was an honorable film to the cast and crew of the original and its fanbase.
I sincerely hope that many of the younger stars in this blockbuster movie get some decent gigs after this movie. None of them came out before the movie to tell us what a bunch of horrible racist bigoted monster we are.
SINS OF OUR FATHERS Rooster initially resents Maverick for pulling his naval application papers and setting him back four years. While Maverick reveals to Penny he did it at the request of Rooster's mother, his reason goes beyond that. In the first film, Goose mentions that the Navy held Maverick away from the Naval Academy because his father Duke Mitchell was made a scapegoat in a botched aerial combat mission during the Vietnam War.
Yea, I didn't get that. Phone on the bar is a problem or it's just how you signify generosity? Also; she points to a sign about disrespecting a lady. Is she one of the anti-smartphone crowd?
@@alm2187 the sign said "disrespect a lady, the Navy, or put your phone on the bar and you buy the bar a round". Putting the phone on the bar is rude, as it clutters up the bar, making the bartender's work harder. It's a space issue.
The very moment I heard the first note from Harold Faltermeyer's famous theme starting while still viewing Mount Paramount I knew they were recreating the intro sequence from the first movie. I had chills as I grabbed the arm of a mate of mine. He was gracious enough to recognize how excited I was and just laughed at me. As it played on I became certain they would play Danger Zone. Dear Looper, I will pick you up on one thing. In the first movie there were 2 mentions of Penny Benjamin. Meg Ryan also mentioned her in the bar. (Scene... Great Balls of Fire) Meg Ryan - "He told me all about the time you went Ballistic with Penny Benjamin." I loved this movie so much. It delivered what my soul wanted to see.
@@universalsoldier2293 I've seen it 4 times now and I'm contemplating a 5th before it leaves the big screen. I'll wait a few weeks and see if I'm in the mood for one last showing.
Went to a theatre that had a Screen X that I had never heard of. Center screen was like an IMAX screen but when first flight scene opened the scene expanded on the walls to the left and right. Awesome experience.
Top Gun Maverick is definitely one to see at a cinema. It’s spectacular! I’ve gone to see it 3 times already and still want to go again. One of my favorite films ever!
Every time I caught a reference to the first Top Gun I'd let out a little squeak and my hubby would look at me like "what's wrong?" LoL...but I didn't want to talk over the movie, so after we left I had to go through all of the references...
@@d26075foxy I did the same thing, but the person I went with was like "why the fuck are you laughing? what's so funny about this?" They didn't realize I was giggling with glee and joy at the callbacks, and not necessarily the humor.
One of my absolute favorite Easter eggs is the “Slider”howl during the original Volleyball scene, that “Hangman” replicates during the football scene, a true callback, what a movie!
For Maverick's demonstration run, he set the time limit to less than the actual mission time limit, so he actually finished with several seconds to spare, not "less than a second."
Several? He cut off 10% of what everyone said was impossible. Being I was on the Enterprise and an F18 ordnance man in the Marines… the moment when it pops up on radar and everyone goes silent…. I blurted out unintentionally in a packed theater “oh hell no” right before the line “who the hell is that”. It registered to me so instantly from being familiar with the equipment and displays, it processed in my mind what was going down literally in fractional time.
No matter the references or what you can remember from the original, this is a very very good movie, good entertainment wholesome entertainment, it had romance with out detailed nudity scenes, no bad language, it’s shows what can be achieved with a good script, director and cast. You missed out on this point!!
ZERO 'woke' crap, yet strong awesome women and black people, etc. This is exactly how it should be done, instead of all the creepy propaganda that is flooding Hollywood these days.
In addition to an absence of gratuitous nudity or bad language, there was as also a refreshing absence of forced diversity and woke political messaging. Yes, there was a mix of ethnicities and there were female fighter pilots, but they were simply there as part of the team, just like in real life.
@@baldieman64 Exactly. So many shows I see these days seem to have nearly 50% black people in the cast... That's not very representative of the US' real demographics...
@@overundersidewaysdown it's an iconic song even without the movie. play it at a bar and you'll hear crowds mouth the words and joyously hi-five each other as if they've been friends forever. it's the kind of song that galvanizes strangers to some magical commonality. as soon as the song ends, you'll notice the crowd disperse back to their own groups but all the while still having a glint of smile from the bonding experience. trust me, bro.
@@jayd2655 I don't see that. MAYBE with a more recent song like "Mr. Jones," by The Counting Crows, which I think would have been a better choice, and fresher...especially after all these years. I appreciate your reply, though.
My favorite line in the movie was when Mav was going Mach 10 in dark star. Being the fastest man alive in the upper atmosphere, the closest to heaven on earth a man can reach. Sun rays pierce through the canopy with the heavenly music and Mav thinks about nothing but his best friend “Talk to me goose”
In Top Gun, when Charlie was introduced to the pilot students, she walked from behind them to the front of the class, causing Maverick and Goose to be surprised. In the sequel, Maverick walked from behind the students to the front, surprising Hangman and his friends as Hangman had thrown Maverick out of the bar the day prior.
In this iteration of TopGun, when Maverick makes a visit to Iceman, I got instantly reminded of Maverick making a visit to Viper in the previous one. Common to both the visits was Maverick's dealing with some emotional turmoil. In this iteration, the turmoil was to whether or not include Rooster (Goose's son) in the strike team and in the previous iteration, it was his inability to focus in the wake of Goose's death during ejection. Barring the climax, which in my opinion was shoddily written from a technical standpoint, the film was replete with spot-on portrayals of technicalities of combat aviation.
Thank you for this excellent video. I would like to point out one flaw, though. You stated that Maverick is "still a Captain". He was a Navy Lieutenant in the First Top Gun, and this is different from the Army/Air Force/Marines ranks. In the Navy, a Captain is an O6, or the equivalent of a Colonel. A Navy Lieutenant is an O3, or the equivalent of a Captain in the other services. So, while Maverick hadn't made Admiral (or General), he was just one step below that.
He is “still a captain” long after he should have been promoted to flag rank. In real life, the Navy has an “Up or Out” promotion system where retirement is mandatory if you hold the same rank too many years in a row.
@@CountArtha sometimes a guy is so good a pilot they let him stay around Obituary in Harrisburg pa paper few years ago about a guy who was a navy pilot 1943 - 1972 , ww2, 3 tours Korea , 3 tours Vietnam, 30 years, all but his last off Essex class carriers , 30 years, retired as a Commander I think he really was on the “old Oriskany” Viet nam era mentioned in the first top gun movie He clearly was one hell of a pilot, and clearly was the “put in hack twice, lost qualification as section leader “ type guy Well maybe today he’d just been drummed out
There was also the moment Mav was talking to Rooster about losing a wingman and shared the same words Viper told him after losing Goose. Also the incredible photography showing the actual activity on a flight deck in both movies (moreso in the new one) during missions. You get to see just how dangerous, chaotic and noisy (even though not all the noise was hear but you can still tell) the deck is. Rooster telling Mav towards the end "give me some of that pilot shit!" which was an exact quote from Goose that warmed my heart. I did also notice that the insignia on the planes of the enemy was very reminscent of Tom Clancy's The Division insignia (a stylized black eagle inside an orange circle).
one thing to note at about 2:30, the other Hornet pilots definitely don't outrank Mav. He's still senior to them by a good 30 years, if not more. In the Navy, Captain is an O-6, which is a Colonel in the Army, Marines, and Air Force. Either way,, O-6 is the last rank before as a field grade officer doing what admirals and generals do: sitting behind a desk. The other pilots were if I remember correctly, a Lieutenant at best (what the other branches call Captain, an O-3.)
if you are talking small details, the best part was at the beginning where he flew that hypersonic aircraft that looked like a baby SR 71 Blackbird. On the tail of that plane was a painting of a little skunk. The SR 71 was designed and built by a secret Lockheed subsidiary in 1964 know as "The Skunk Works".
Yeah, I caught that too. I was just a week early at the Smithsonian and remember seeing that skunk on the SR71 in the museum, so that also stood out in my mind.
Absolutely!! I grew up in So Cal in the 70s with the original Tomcat Squadrons pilots for neighbors and friends fathers. With the B and D models, still the best we've ever produced. "Anytime Baby forever!"
In the 90s I was married to a electricians mate 2PO who was a green shirt. He worked below deck mostly. We went on dependent's day cruise in CA. They had the F14s on the flight deck and we were down below when they took off. That roar and the heat from afterburners was insane. The shaking was enough to nearly knock you off your feet. Oh n they handed out ear protection beforehand. I took pictures afterwards next to them. Incredible planes.
One of my favorite callbacks occurred in the opening sequence on the carrier. In the original there’s a moment where a crew member whips his leg in the air. In the same moment of the song playing during Maverick, they showed a chain whipping in the air instead. Only the die hard Top Gun fans caught it.
This definitely is an American proud movie, really glad and appreciate Tom to make this Top Gun 2 , with all the respect for Tom and casts put all the hard work for this movie….. love this movie, I saw it for twice in theater and worth every penny of it !
OMG ! Is this a real Tom’s reply ? I watched this movie in L.A movie theater ( AMC movie theater in El Segundo). all my friends and family back home in Taiwan also are big fans & supporters of this movie, you are a true American proud & hero, hope there will be top gun 3 though, thank you 🙏
Tom Cruise looks GREAT at 60!! If you go back thru some of the Top Gun Maverick short videos you can find the one that references the “past” and “present” looks of the actors in the first Top Gun film!! Tom Cruise is the ONLY ONE that has “aged well” the other actors are either too old or have let themselves go and have gained an enormous amount of weight!! Which of course is not what you want to see on screen today; especially in this second and final Top Gun movie!!! FYI… I absolutely loved this movie, in fact I am a retired lady and also a widow. Because I have so much “time on my hands” I watch this movie, Top Gun Maverick EVERY SINGLE DAY!!! What can I say; Tom Cruise still looks GREAT in a pair of jeans!!🤩🤩🤩
It's been awhile since I've been to the movies to watch a good movie. This by far was beyond expectations. TG2 was worth every popcorn devoured during this awesome movie :0)
Ummm I haven’t read all the comments but there is a VERY strong reference to who the “enemy” is. The fact that they choose an F14 Tomcat as the plane that Maverick and Rooster flew to safety in speaks volumes of who the enemy is. When the US military retired the F14 in 2006 the only other country in the world that has F14’s is Iran and they are still flying them since the 1970’s. Now most of them are questionably airworthy they still have them.
I also thought it's Iran for this reason... plus the US is constantly trying to prevent them from making their own nukes. Those 5th gen fighters could be just a unit borrowed from friend Russia to improve air defence of that specific area.
@@starmc26 True SU-57’s are Russian, and Russia is the only country that currently has them in operation and there is snow… Again the F-14 is still only in service with Iran, and in the briefing you can clearly see what looks like 4-6 F-14’s I would still lean more towards Iran, or a splinter state in Northern Iran as the stretch of land between the Caspian and Black Sea, which has mountains and snow but also holds the country’s of Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijani. Either way this is a fictional story, and a great one at that.
How about some Star Trek References for extra points? 1. Mav, like Kirk, disobeys orders, keeps getting busted down to rank of Captain, because he doesn’t want a desk job, wants to be in the air. (Won’t be happy unless you’re going Mach 2 with your hair on fire). Second, like Kirk, Maverick keeps cheating death to live to fly another day. In real life, The only other country to fly Tomcats was Iran, a country with nuclear weapons intentions.
Great movie! Hard to ask for anything more. Tons of effort by all involved. Loved it. Val Kilmer brought it all together perfectly. Val has throat issues and didn't have to do the film (THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORT). Little details were important as Easter eggs in the film to watch for.
Loved how on the joystick of Darkstar there is a sticker of a skunk, which is a complete nod and imagery to Skunk Works (and their logo) who was behind the development of some of the most famous aircraft - such as the SR-71 and F-117. Glad to see things where only real enthusiasts or aviators would pickup on and appreciate.
I saw it for the first time 2 weeks ago. I was surprised it was still playing, so I decided to check it out before they removed it from the theater. I saw it again a week later. Loved it.!!! 👍🏿 I will say this though. The opening of the original is still my favorite.
There are better reviews on such places as the Fighter Pilot Podcast, Ward Carols YT site and Movers YT site. All by actual Navy pilots who have been through Top Gun and are combat experienced. They all generally love the movie for the effort that went into various aspects while acknowledging that movie making has a certain licence in order to move the story along and create moments of humour, clarity and enjoyment. Buying a round at the bar or being removed for putting your hat on the bar or your phone is a real thing at several of the clubs around Naval bases according to those other pilot reviews. Ed Harris, plays the weathered Admiral here but in The Right Stuff he played John Glen, test pilot and astronaut. The Dark Star scenes are a nod to The Right Stuff as well as Chuck Yeager's famous F-104 crash in the high altitude tests leaving him injured walking across the remote desert (in the movie) after ejecting. John Glen retired a Marine Colonel which is the equivalent of a Navy Captain, Mavericks rank. Ed Harris remarks in the movie (not the trailer) that Maverick should be a two star admiral by now, if not a senator. John Glen went on to become a US Senator. John Glen also resigned that position in the 90's to once again fly on the Space Shuttle as the oldest astronaut making him a relic of a bygone era still active in the space community. Just like Maverick.
I read somewhere that at the actual Top gun, if you get caught quoting the movie, you get fined. I don't remember how much, but I don't think it was very much, like $5. Not sure if that's true or not, but I thought it was funny.
The little detail I loved was at the beginning. There’s a plaque from the 412th TW with Maverick’s name. I spent 15 months with the 461st Deadly Jesters (which is part of the 412th) as a civilian contractor (engine sme). I also appreciated that in the control room during the Darkstar flight, when the TC polled the room for takeoff, Engine was first. Flight Controls and Engine are the two most important systems in an aircraft, so they’re the ones who are checked in on first with these polls.
I noticed the 412th Test Wing too. That's an Air Force test unit not Navy. So I'm assuming Maverick may have been transferred to serve temporarily with that USAF test unit for a while (probably as part of joint exchange or something, especially since sometimes both branches would have their student test pilots attend the other's test pilot school).
Penny could've just had the Porsche since she was a teen. Her dad was an Admiral and she had a relationship with Pete since prior to 1986. Many 1950 - 1970 cars were very cheap till the 1990s
Most fun I had in the cinema since I can't remeber when. I was crazy about the movie as akid. I had part of in on VHS and was watching it over and over again. The sequel was great and I tip my hat to Tom Cruise for doing it right.
DCS fans will have enjoyed the F-14 scenes, particularly the attention to detail for the start up - ground power, ground air supply, left and right engine cranks, manual wing sweep setting - but something that may have gone unnoticed and explains a plot point - they didn’t arm the ejection seats! That’s why pulling the rings failed. Not because the seats didn’t work, but because they didn’t flip the little switches on top of their seats. Also, that radar warning alarm when Rooster finally gets the radar and radio switched on. As soon as I heard that I thought “oh crap, it’s not over yet.” A little thing from the original Top Gun, in the mission scene Maverick is down to a single missile - “we’ve got a problem here, we’ve only got one missile left” - there were a few occasions earlier on in the film where the line “I’m too close for missiles, I’m switching to guns” is uttered, yet in that moment Maverick forgets that there’s a 20mm rotary canon located a few feet below his seat. Thankfully that is rectified in this one, as he opens the dogfight with said canon, and goes back to it when he runs out of missiles.
well unless they both repacked their parachutes the ejection process would have had a pretty messy ending, they are on the aircrew, not in the seats....eject, seat seperation, splatto will have to watch it again, they look like hanging diaper bags
With a target lock on him, Rooster couldn't eject, the "thing' didn't work, Maverick's willinginess to take the fire and possibly die rather than see rooster die like his father whose ejection after they were hit went wrong.
As an ex-Navy Avionics Tech most of the details I noticed were mainly technical and procedural specifically with the Tomcat and flight deck sequences. To their credit they got a lot more 'right' than 'wrong' compared to the original 86 release. The first one had TONS of technical errors some ranging from egregious to silly, but there are still a few details in this one that only a handful or people would catch. Some I'm sure had to do with the dramatic pacing (FYI, it takes more than 20-seconds to start both Tomcat engines) and some were outright silly (ONE SINGLE circuit breaker reset and ALL the RIO instruments light up? Nope!). I worked on a different aircraft and I'm sure someone who actually worked on the 14 could comment further. The most unrealistic thing was during the final scenes were the carrier deck crewmembers. Everyone's floatcoats, cranials and jerseys were pristine! After initial issue, that lasts for about 3-days! FAKE!! LOL!
Also they Rooster didn't hold the Circuit breaker down until it let out all the magic smoke....and shame on you, you are always an Avionics tech! just one out of work 😉😁 My favorite scene in the first one after getting out of the Navy is hearing over the radio a request for a Mode 4 check...I always loved mode 4 check on night ops
I saw the movie a couple of weeks ago and really enjoyed it. I felt like I went to my high school reunion, met the grown children of my classmates and then learned that the class president died.
When we first meet Jennifer Connelly's character, Penny Benjamin, a David Bowie song is playing in the background. That's a nod to the film Labyrinth, in which the two starred together.
A bit of trivia that ties into the canyon run being similar to the Death Star run at the end of A New Hope -- When Jerry Bruckheimer read "Top Guns," the 1983 California Magazine article that became the basis for the original Top Gun, he pitched it to the studio as "Star Wars on Earth." I think he finally was able to see his vision come full circle with TG:M!
There’s crucial to revision the first one before the Top Gun 2022. Maybe this could be the only time Tom cruise can be nominated for best male actor in Oscar.
@@BogeyTheBear That’s really cool to know. That’s one of his top performance, the most darkly side of Tom Cruise. Secondly it was Magnolia to me with Oscar best actor material.
They nominated him for "Jerry Maguire" (not his best work if I you ask me). I think they missed the mark by not even nominating him for "Interview with the Vampire" (if you read the book, he IS Lestat!) or for "A Few Good Men". And I don't even like him very much. But "Top Gun' is one of my favorite films ever, and "TG: Maverick" was just AMAZING!
"Jerry Macguire" was an entertaining drama to me. Now i am digging back some of his older solid stuff with acting performance focused like "Interview with the Vampire" is one of them. I believe there's many not into Tom Cruise as he was decades before anymore. We have too many unique, outstanding & talented celebrities these days. Somehow his attitude in his filming career is what makes us fascinated bout his persistency in doing what he believe. Many of us are touched to pay for his Believing.
Here is a real detail. When pulling 9-10Gs in the film it shows Maverick (and the others) grabbing the paddle switch on the stick. The paddle switch on the FA-18 overrides the G-limiter.
Watching the original now, and I just realized that there is a similar history shared between Mav and Rooster. Although obviously for different reasons, Mav was also denied entrance into the Academy, "for being Duke Mitchell's kid". Interesting parallel.
There is also a throw back to a Few Good Men. Maverick comments about not being used to boats and Penny responds that he’s in the Navy. Very similar to Demi Moore’s line when they’re due to head out on a boat. ‘Jesus Christ Kaffee. You’re in the Navy for crying out loud.’
I did not expect it would be as good and even better but when I watched it, I have more joy from the first Top Gun when I was a kid, it was a blast! awesome!
Also similar to SW trench run, the targeting computer fails, but dead aiming gets the job done. Rooster says "talk to me dad" almost as if invoking the "use the force Luke" line from Obi-Wan.
One more similarity is this: In first movie Maverick was chasing the legend Viper and Viper was commenting on his moves trying to shoot him down. Same thing happened with Maverick as the instructor (in Viper's shoes) and Rooster trying to shoot him. And in both scenes the students failed to killed their instructors.
Actually, a Captain in the navy is the same rank as a colonel in the other branches (o-6). I didn't quite understand the hate in the movie over this as making o-6 is a feat in its own right. Many a commissioned officers don't make it that high in the ranks before tapping out. And Mavericks rank shows that he was unwilling to sell his soul to the political game (and desk) that comes with getting a star. Top Gun was more realistic than people realize.
Top Gun: Maverick is AWESOME! It's easily as good, if not better than, the first one. I didn't notice some of the smaller details, so I'll definitely have to go back and watch it agian!
I missed the "feel the need ... the need for speed" line ... and situation of a close friendship. Also in my view .. there was A LOT of worried looks on Tom's face and not nearly enough grins and smiles. Sometimes I was wondering if it was MI7 .. or TG2 I was looking at. Still ... having cockpit scenes where you actually see some outside reference of where they are and where they go .. awesome film !
Oh wow. I wasn't a big fan of Tom back in the day but I kinda liked it. I am liking him hella lot more after all these years so I can not wait to see this movie.
Run don’t walk to the movie theatre. You must see this one even if you didn’t care about the first one. Some of the movie making shit in the new one will make history again.
There were actually two references to Penny Benjamin in the original Top Gun movie, the second given by Meg Ryan's character during the early part of the "Great Balls of Fire" scene. "Goose told me all about the time you went ballistic with Patty Benjamin."
A neat thing to note, when Maverick teaches the team how to dogfight to survive the mission. This is a direct homage to Viper teaching the recruits, directly from Maverick goofing off on the radio like Viper and also how both veterans bested the recruits at all times when training
Were there any other details you noticed?
Yes Miles Teller and Jennifer Connelly were in Only The Brave Together. And now they're having scenes with Tom Cruise in Top Gun Maverick.
When MAv n Penny go sailing, he's wearing black boots, then when he brings her home on da kawasaki, he's wearing brown boots :o
Yeah. It was Star Wars.
86 was the Jukebox selection.
Or when Rooster said “c’mon Mav, do some of that pilot shit”, just like Goose did, when they hijacked the F14 and are being chased
@@frankiec5570 Also right after that he said "This is not good" which is something Goose said when they were in the flat spin.
Honk to me goose

I shed tears of joy during the opening sequence. Pure nostalgia and all the feels.
I was at the edge of my seat throughout the movie. I was not born when the first part came out, but i watched it when i was 12 years old and loved it ever since. So, when i heard Maverick was ours it made me call in sick for work and go watch the movie first. 😂
Me too. The nostalgia hit hard. The tears flowed.
Yep...lots of years...lots of nostalgia because my "wingman" of 40 years wasn't sitting beside me 💔
@@kelleyspartiatis4776 I heard a woman behind me sobbing almost the entire movie!
I thought his reply 'you told me not to think!' was the best one. broke the tension and everything was good from there onwards
My favourite line too.
Yes!!
Was that Rooster or Goose in a voice over? To me it sounded more like Goose. It really stood out to me.
He was quoting Top Gun
I just saw the movie today. It was SOOO GOOD!!! I've seen the original so many times over the years, I can quote it. I didn't think the sequel could come close to how good the original was. But somehow, they managed to do it. Excellent movie!! So many great nods to the original movie. Loved it.
I saw it at the Sunday matinee too. It was almost perfect. But BOB should have died. Lol
I saw the movie last and lost tract of time. I had to go the bathroom really bad at the end but held out til the movie finished
Right?! So unusual for a sequel to be anywhere NEAR as good as the original! Not disappointed!
Seen it 3 times now 💪🏼🏆😎
Same here
Saw it first in regular theatre then recently in iMAX
@@WindTurbineSyndrome exactly the same!!!
Yeah I thought that too.
That's what I thought, you actually see his cell phone in his hands too. Either way I'm not doing either one lol
Correct, I believe Penny actually says as much.
He disrespected her rules of the bar . Bars at Naval bases have different rules that get the bell rang .
Penny or Jennifer Connelly was the icing on the cake for this film. Her screen presence was a welcomed sight. Sometimes Hollywood does get it right. The casting of Connelly was spot on.
@@chuckroast5735 it was brilliant. Miles Teller was great. Honestly, the whole fuckin cast was great.
It took a day or two to move on from nostalgia after watching this movie.. Dang! Good eye!

I guess if you think about it this way then I guess it kind of makes sense but someone who fills that role more is Cyclone. Cyclone always stepped in to stop Maverick on everything.
Penny was also mentioned in the bar scene with Meg Ryan in the original Top Gun.
That's right..Carol's quote in the bar (Goose & his wife's names are Nick & Carol Bradshaw) while discussing Penny was:
Carol: "Yeah..He told me all about the time you went ballistic with Penny Benjamin...He tells me about ALL of them Maverick.."
Mav: "Oh, does he.."?
Rooster initially resents Maverick for pulling his naval application papers and setting him back four years.

For Maverick's demonstration run, he set the time limit to less than the actual mission time limit, so he actually finished with several seconds to spare, not "less than a second."

Great success to movie 'Top Gun:Maverick'and Your actring is in top of the stars🤩🌐Congratulation🎆
In the movie he is the fastest man alive, but he may not have the record of flying at the highest altitude within Earth's atmosphere.
I noticed this too. I also think they replicated the facial expression/camera angles as in the first film. Someone had a toothpick and the look.
That was addressed in the video.
I made the comment

Very Amazing, I'm proud of you Tom like always, you are the best 👌
You are a living legend.
The black ‘enemy’ planes were USAF F-5s, an attack variant of the two-seater T-38 trainer. Early in the movie.
Pure Americana. Old Hollywood style. Thanks, Tom Cruise. You restored my high regard for you. America needs this.
one thing to note at about 2:30, the other Hornet pilots definitely don't outrank Mav.
Wow, nicely spotted! That's a real Easter Egg for sure. A nod to the legendary SR-71.
The Skunk Works still exists.
Kelly Johnson. Brilliant designer.
Yeah, I caught that too. I was just a week early at the Smithsonian and remember seeing that skunk on the SR71 in the museum, so that also stood out in my mind.

I cried when i saw that f-14 hit the taxi way. Still the best jet ever.
Absolutely!! I grew up in So Cal in the 70s with the original Tomcat Squadrons pilots for neighbors and friends fathers. With the B and D models, still the best we've ever produced. "Anytime Baby forever!"
I was in VF-101 in NAS Oceana when it was filmed. My boyfriend was at Miramar on DET and saw it being filmed. Such memories!
For Rooster to say ‘why are the wings moving?’ Would absolutely never be said by a Navy pilot.
YES!!! I get up and do the kick every time I hear the song! 🤣😂
Very impressed with how this movie was done. Really paid homage to the original while bringing a modern edge to it.
I watched this movie in L.A movie theater ( AMC movie theater in El Segundo). all my friends and family back home in Taiwan also are big fans & supporters of this movie, you are a true American proud & hero, hope there will be top gun 3 though, thank you 🙏
I’ll give him credit for looking good at nearly 60 years old 💪🏼
Tom Cruise looks GREAT at 60!!
🌟
Mav saying "There will be others. You can count on it" is just about verbatim from Viper in the original film.
Thanks!
It's been awhile since I've been to the movies to watch a good movie. This by far was beyond expectations. TG2 was worth every popcorn devoured during this awesome movie :0)
I shed tears of joy at the end of this movie just because of how beautiful this movie was
Ummm I haven’t read all the comments but there is a VERY strong reference to who the “enemy” is.
@@geminiXXX excellent point or possible China, but since one of the movies financiers is from China Highly unlikely
It was a single F-14 in a hardened shelter... The SU-57's are Russian; that speaks more to whom the enemy is..... Russia.
Yup..had already picked up on this Easter eggs . Thanks for posting
Wow ! Really good! Watched it twice!!
Lockheed actually told a small team to develop something feasible for the movie, they were involved in the Darkstar
@@Bogeyatyour6YT I saw the skunk & Lockheed name on the Darkstar throttle.
@@Bogeyatyour6YTThe skunk works were mentioned in the movie credits.
I saw it for the first time 2 weeks ago. I was surprised it was still playing, so I decided to check it out before they removed it from the theater. I saw it again a week later. Loved it.!!! 👍🏿
I will say this though. The opening of the original is still my favorite.
“Come on Mav do some of that pilot shit” just like his dad 😭 and in an F-14 too!
“You told me not to think!”
Rooster has the best lines! 🐓
Wisqpod
Wow.
Glenn , 2 n’s
Good analogy though connecting all the backgrounds
Flew with Ted Williams in Korea
You missed "do some of that pilot shit" Rooster to Maverick in the stolen F14 Tomcat getting home. As Rooster's dad said . Great film
Penny could've just had the Porsche since she was a teen. Her dad was an Admiral and she had a relationship with Pete since prior to 1986. Many 1950 - 1970 cars were very cheap till the 1990s
Or from a divorce from her ex-husband.
Right. That's the best way women get muscle cars 🙄
Most fun I had in the cinema since I can't remeber when. I was crazy about the movie as akid. I had part of in on VHS and was watching it over and over again. The sequel was great and I tip my hat to Tom Cruise for doing it right.
And the director too. He kept Tony's direction alive.
As soon as I heard that I thought “oh crap, it’s not over yet.”
A little thing from the original Top Gun, in the mission scene Maverick is down to a single missile - “we’ve got a problem here, we’ve only got one missile left” - there were a few occasions earlier on in the film where the line “I’m too close for missiles, I’m switching to guns” is uttered, yet in that moment Maverick forgets that there’s a 20mm rotary canon located a few feet below his seat.
Thankfully that is rectified in this one, as he opens the dogfight with said canon, and goes back to it when he runs out of missiles.
Even I lost my shit when I heard the RWR go off in the end
Exactly what I was thinking.
Rooster got the pins out for everything but being unfamiliar with the F-14, didn't arm the ejector seats.
Well spotted
And that 20 mill still sounds like a blasted M-60..... BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRT, anyone?
@@marcothommen2484 only movie to get that right was final countdown
well unless they both repacked their parachutes the ejection process would have had a pretty messy ending, they are on the aircrew, not in the seats....eject, seat seperation, splatto
will have to watch it again, they look like hanging diaper bags
Rooster "Do some of that pilot shit" was the best dialogue callback
With a target lock on him, Rooster couldn't eject, the "thing' didn't work, Maverick's willinginess to take the fire and possibly die rather than see rooster die like his father whose ejection after they were hit went wrong.
Amazing feat bringing new fans in, and satisfying old fans. Eye watering the whole movie, the ratings doesn't lie.
FAKE!! LOL!
Also they Rooster didn't hold the Circuit breaker down until it let out all the magic smoke....and shame on you, you are always an Avionics tech! just one out of work 😉😁 My favorite scene in the first one after getting out of the Navy is hearing over the radio a request for a Mode 4 check...I always loved mode 4 check on night ops
damn, you used almost all the words...leave some for other people to use
@@Cougar139tweak Forgot about the Mode 4 checks. I did tons of those.
5:45 Iran does have old F-14s though. That's one step closer to a fictionalized version of Iran
It's probably a combo of Russia and Iran, and China creates war with viruses not planes
You make a great point there there was no other country other then the USA to operate the f14
That's a nod to the film Labyrinth, in which the two starred together.
ello, did you say hello, no but thats close enough.
I was wondering what song that was in the background.
I think so.
I watched the movie again last Friday and that David Bowie song is Let's Dance.
Tom Cruise's first Academy Award nomination for Best Actor came in 1989 with Oliver Stone's _Born on the 4th of July._
I just watched this again tonight!!!! Such an awesome movie!!!
Watching the original now, and I just realized that there is a similar history shared between Mav and Rooster. Although obviously for different reasons, Mav was also denied entrance into the Academy, "for being Duke Mitchell's kid". Interesting parallel.
I saw TOPGUN 2 maverick yesterday was in tears of emotions all through the film
There is also a throw back to a Few Good Men. Maverick comments about not being used to boats and Penny responds that he’s in the Navy. Very similar to Demi Moore’s line when they’re due to head out on a boat. ‘Jesus Christ Kaffee. You’re in the Navy for crying out loud.’
Oh dang, I missed the Penny Benjamin connection. That is awesome!!
Best movie I've ever seen - 2nd time at IMAX better than 1st time digital
I did not expect it would be as good and even better but when I watched it, I have more joy from the first Top Gun when I was a kid, it was a blast! awesome!
At Ice Man's funeral scene Val Killer's real life son who is an actor too was there. I couldn't do my dad's fake funeral that is too rough. 😔
Ok...I'll watch it again to see if I can find it.
I thought that was him
Also similar to SW trench run, the targeting computer fails, but dead aiming gets the job done. Rooster says "talk to me dad" almost as if invoking the "use the force Luke" line from Obi-Wan.
I can watch this movie over and over again it will go down in history as being one of the best movies ever written love all my Tom Cruise movies
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
One more similarity is this: In first movie Maverick was chasing the legend Viper and Viper was commenting on his moves trying to shoot him down. Same thing happened with Maverick as the instructor (in Viper's shoes) and Rooster trying to shoot him. And in both scenes the students failed to killed their instructors.
Great video!
My favorite line that was referenced was when Rooster says to Maverick "Do some of that pilot sh_t!". Exact same line from Goose!!
Great tribute to Tony Scott. I missed Tom Skerritt in the sequel. Great show.
Most people do not understand the Navy pay scale. They think it is like the Army and a captain is an O-3
He learned from James T. Kirk, don't promote out of a job you like to one you hate.
I grew up in the 80s, I still listen to 80s music and still ride the same motorbike I had,its kept me youthful.
Val Kilmer actually reached out to Cruise and said he wanted to be involved in the sequel.
This movie is worth watching twice. It's that good.
Oh wow. I wasn't a big fan of Tom back in the day but I kinda liked it. I am liking him hella lot more after all these years so I can not wait to see this movie.
Watch “America Made” a Tom Cruise movie really well done about the mid 80’s and drug wars. You might like that too. Important story and US history.
@@kitburns1665 Hey cool. I checked out the trailer and it looked pretty good. I'll watch it. Thanks.
Run don’t walk to the movie theatre. You must see this one even if you didn’t care about the first one. Some of the movie making shit in the new one will make history again.
I love the opening scene… golden touch
There were actually two references to Penny Benjamin in the original Top Gun movie, the second given by Meg Ryan's character during the early part of the "Great Balls of Fire" scene. "Goose told me all about the time you went ballistic with Patty Benjamin."
Amazing how some of you picked that up. I’ve seen Top Gun a few times & didn’t pick that up.
I loved when Rooster says, “do some of that pilot shit Mav.” Same phrase his father had said in the first one.
A neat thing to note, when Maverick teaches the team how to dogfight to survive the mission. This is a direct homage to Viper teaching the recruits, directly from Maverick goofing off on the radio like Viper and also how both veterans bested the recruits at all times when training
I’ve watched this movie 21 times and counting. Noticed all of these!
