  • After 35 years of waiting, "Top Gun: Maverick" arrived in the summer movie season of 2022. It launched a new story in the saga of Pete "Maverick" Mitchell, the hotshot pilot from the original film who's older but not necessarily wiser, still flying planes as far and as fast as he can. An intriguing blend of old and new, "Top Gun: Maverick" is an attempt to recapture the spirit of the original film while also pushing things further and higher. While the ending doesn't have many big twists, there's still a lot of thematic importance that you might have missed. This is the ending of "Top Gun: Maverick" explained.

Look, Iceman was not THAT antagonistic. If you watch the original, yes he seems cocky but you realize he knows what he's doing and questions Maverick in a legit way. He's the only one that tells Maverick he's sorry about Goose. One of the things that's so great about the original is you have these rivalries yet its clear everyone is on the same team and it never gets toxic. I'm just so happy how the sequel handled the relationships in such a beautiful way.

I like Iceman more than Maverick when watching Top Gun because he was right about Maverick
He puts the team at risk while Iceman was being skillful by the books
And Top Gun 2 we have that duo again
      Hangman is a cockier Maverick
Rooster is a pilot that goes by the books and a good team player just like Iceman but does not have the skills like his and always kept overthinking things
Phoenix was a mix of both in a good way
Skills not bad and also a team player

Maverick made a promise to Carole that he would not let him fly and he tried to keep that promise. From Rooster's pov I can understand why he would be mad at him but Maverick did the right thing but probably not in the best way. Anyway this movie was phenomenal and one of the best sequels I have ever seen

In the film, Maverick explained that He didn't tell Rooster the truth to why he pulled papers and set him back was because he didn't want Rooster to have ill feelings about his mother. Maverick did what he thought was best to honor Carole's wishes AND give Rooster more time to "let go". This was a very fatherly thing for Maverick to do. For me that shows Maverick being wiser and placing more value to how his actions affect others... he will never leave his wingman ever again. He also proves this point when keeping his promise to Penny that he will not leave her again.

It was an immature fatherly move, I understand wanting to follow a mother’s wishes but you don’t do it this way. The proper way to announce things like this would be to actually step in and take care of the child and be more of a father figure than just withdrawing someone’s papers from the naval academy. The reason Carole didn’t want her son to go into aviation was so the same thing that happened to her husband wouldn’t happen to her son and she asked Mav to be the father figure Bradley never had.

@@nicoleskorupsky1007 If you saw the movie Maverick said Rooster was not ready to become a pilot as he was still dealing with the loss of his father. That's a solid parenting move. Always looking out for the safety and mental and emotional well being of your children. Rooster's struggle to move on and "let go" was all too familiar to Maverick's loss of his father and his own struggle to "let go".

    • @Ray-rt3yh
      @Ray-rt3yh Рік тому +49

@@nicoleskorupsky1007 Maverick didn't want Rooster to resent Carole for not wanting him to fly. She passed away before Rooster and her could have talked about the situation, so Maverick honored her wishes while also taking the full heat for it. He wants Rooster to be upset with him, not his mom. But in the end, Maverick made up for the years Rooster lost by bringing him with him, but by doing so he is also going against Carole's wishes. This is why Maverick had a side mission mentally the whole time to keep Rooster alive. And Maverick will never mention to Rooster what his mom wanted, because he knows Goose wouldn't have it any other way than see his son follow in his footsteps. So yes Maverick was literally stepping in and protecting Rooster through the whole thing.

That way he could weed out the pilots that can't tolerate the G forces, then seen who handles the canyon run best and check their dog fighting skills, and then choose who gets paired up and who is most likely to be able to pull it off.

I’ll tell you this, though, if behavior like that actually happened, it wouldn’t be contained to only 2 or 3 incidents. It would be constant, because nobody acts like that only a few times… once you’re brazen and risking hundreds of people seeing it (by the way, where’s the cell phone footage of it? Comeon, everything gets leaked these days…) you don’t just stop doing it. So far I’ve heard only sparse rumors. Literally the meaning of “Maverick” = individualist; something Hangman is criticized for over and over. He also leaves his wingman during flight training. For the most part Iceman is living the pilot live he couldnt continue thru Maverick. That's why he is keeping him flying as long as he can. "Its time to let go" on the surface seems to be the advice Ic e gave Maverick but at the same time he is consciously or subconsciously telling himself its time to let go as he know his life is coming to an end due to the illness. "Who is a better pilot?" really tells the audience Ice has always been comparing himself to Maverick as a pilot even thought he left the job long time ago. I guess because of his poistion he would have all the top secret doc of Maverick's flying so he probably was studying them and thinking what he would have done in those situations if he was still flying. That brief conversation with Maverick was deep with few words. Loved it.

  • @Noizemaze4

When Ice says "it's time to let go", he's also referring to himself, where he has to let Maverick go cuz he knows he'll die soon and can't be there to protect him, thus Maverick must prove his own worth to the Navy with his own merits. He may have some guilt himself too for being responsible for Goose's death, so he can't be holding onto that forever and must just let the next generation deal with it ~

I was flooded with nostalgia watching this movie. The fact that 36 years can go by so quickly. One moment being a child watching the original movie and the next minute being an adult in my mid forties with both my parents now gone and times having changed so dramatically over the years. I think the movie acknowledged this part of life too, Maverick sitting on the beach as an older and wiser character watching the younger guys playing football on the beach it feels like Maverick is remembering his younger days too and isn’t this what we all do? That’s the reason we all need to live life and make so many memories as it’s these memories that will sustain us throughout the rest of our lives, something that we will look back on when we are old and can no longer do things or travel and see places. Yes I’ve never watched a movie that has brought so much nostalgia to me. We laughed, we cried, we gasped this movie had it all. Also reminded me of the country America used to be, everything that it stood for and everything that America can be again. I’m not even American nor do I live in America. Perfect casting!!🤗

In a way, Maverick is like Star Trek’s Captain James T. Kirk- he isn’t beholden to rules; he is capable of thinking outside the box and bending the rules. He tries to do the right thing, but not necessarily what the rules and regs say. And, like Jim Kirk, Maverick remained a Captain far longer that usual- and Kirk was maneuvered into accepting a promotion as revealed in the novelization of Star Trek: The Motion Picture.

Fixing up and flying the P51 was probably inspired by the life of Captain Dale "Snort" Snodgrass. It pays tribute to one of the finest, if not the finest ever, F14 pilots. Snort also retired from the USN as a captain, most likely because he didn't want to fly a desk.
Iceman and Cyclone perhaps represent the naval bureaucracy. Necessary but seldom inspiring. Ice needed to be bailed out by Mav in Top Gun I. He also played an indirect part in Goose's death, cutting Mav off and then refusing to disengage. When he finally did, his jet wash put Mav and Goose into the lethal flat spin. As for Cyclone, he ordered Mav to be abandoned behind enemy lines. Ask the SEALs: you never leave a man behind. Even worse, Cyclone wanted the pilots to fly a mission profile that would be likely to get them to the target but also likely to be bounced by Su57s. He was essentially ordering them on a suicide mission and didn't care if they never made it back. Yes, the Navy bureaucracy and administrators make things run smoothly but they make many awful decisions while doing their jobs.
Last point, you'd probably never hear Ice or Cyclone say being a naval aviator is WHO they are. They're more interested in getting promotions and climbing up the chain of command.

The analysis of this review/overview of the films are quite subjective with some of the storylines events. The proper way to do this is acknowledge your opinions of why this or that as they are not facts of the films. Maverick's objective in completing the training exercise was not to prove that he should be team leader. It was to show that it wasn't impossible and that loosening mission tolerances was wrong as it endangers the pilots to the point of writing it of as a suicide mission that will probably fail. The students made these arguments in the film. The byproduct of his feat was 1) no doubt Maverick still has what it takes to successfully complete the mission physically and mentally. 2) more importantly, Maverick proved that his students respected and trusted him entirely, therefore who best to be team leader and give the mission and the pilots the best chance of success and survival.

As a former F/A - 18 pilot myself I would not have a problem having someone like "Iceman" flying with me. "Hangman" on the other hand up till the very end anyway would be the last pilot I would want to be in the air with. Our callsigns come both from personality of the pilot spin offs of last names, hometowns, or embarrassing stories shared. When I first heard the callsign "hangman" first thing that went to my mind was he punched out at some point and got hung up during the landing, instead he leaves his wingman hanging out to dry. Not a trait I want when my 6 is on the line and I need someone I know I can count on to be there.
As far as promotions go it will defiantly help at the Lieutenant Commander promotion boards when the pilots put enough time in grade as Lieutenants but they wont be promoted right away. Everyone that flew on the mission is probably looking at the DFC (Distinguished Flying Cross) as well for their actions. "Rooster" might be looking at a court martial though as if this was real life and not a movie disobeying a direct order from the 3 star running all Naval aviation would not be advised even if it was successful (this is really a 50/50 as Mavrick was saved as a result of going back but another 18 was lost to do it).
Also in a real life situation "Mavrick's" flying career as well as naval career as a whole defiantly would have been over with after disobeying the first orders from the 2 star at the start of the movie. A character who I found out from a friend that saw the movie before I did uses the callsign I had.

Wrong, it is not “without a doubt the best sequel ever”. There IS doubt, and I think Blade Runner 2049 was a better sequel, also Empire Strikes Back and Rouge One. This is a good sequel, no doubt.

I saw this movie twice, once in the regular theater, and the second time, with DBox, whatever that means. I have the original Top Gun movie, and I've ordered this new, Top Gun Maverick movie. Both movie's are excellent. I took a close friend to see this second version of the movie, and at first, she said to me that this version was over two hours long. At the end of the movie, I asked her, "Did it seem like the movie was too long?", and she said, no, it didn't seem too long, which to me meant that the movie kept you enthralled so much, that you didn't realize that two hours had gone by. As always, Tom Cruise did a great job in this movie, and it was a really great movie to watch. I've always liked Tom Cruise, and this movie is a reason why. Tom never does anything half assed, he always does the best to help create a real experience, and he excels at it in this movie. If you haven't seen this movie yet, go and see it...it won't disappoint you.

In my humble opinion, I don't believe Tom Cruise gets the credit that he deserves for being a great actor. He's often associated with his roles in action films, but he is a phenomenal dramatic actor as well. Just think of his prior movies like "Born on the Fourth of July", "Jerry Maguire", and "A Few Good Men". Those were not action films. In "Top Gun: Maverick", Cruise combined an emotional depth to the film along with the tremendous action sequences where he was in the actual cockpit of the F-18. The Academy Award for Best Actor in a Leading Role has traditionally been given to those who portrayed a character in a unique emotional way. Think of Tom Hanks in "Philadelphia" or Adrien Brody in "The Pianist". However, more recently, Leonardo DiCaprio won the Academy Award for Best Actor in "The Revenant" not only for the emotional depth that he provided to the role but for the grueling physical toll that he put himself in while performing in the role. The same can be said here for Tom Cruise. He brought an emotional depth to the film and put himself in the cockpit of the F-18 as well and subjected himself to those G-forces while still acting at the same time. There aren't too many actors that can do that. For these reasons alone, Cruise should get a Best Actor Nomination for this role.

CDR Tom "Stinger" Jordan states to Maverick:
Son, your ego is writing checks your body can't cash. You've been busted, you lost your qualifications as section leader three times, put in hack twice by me, with a history of high speed passes over five air control towers, and one admiral's daughter!
Penny is the admiral's daughter, I thought that was a great touch.

Goose's wife also tells Charlie that Goose told her about that time he "went ballistic with Penny Benjamin" during that scene in the bar before they start singing "Great Balls of Fire".

I loved the movie. Lots of historical references if you a aviation history buff. The ejection from the research hypersonic jet corresponds to Chuck Yagers accident flying the F104 research aircraft which had a rocket and attitude control system. The practice in the F/A 18 was to fly a mission requiring a 10g pull-up on a plane rated to for a max of 7g. This corresponds to the practice for the Doolittle raid which required practice to taking off in 500 feet with a B25. The f14 scene with a with escape by flying an enemy aircraft did happen in WW2. The crack pilot Bob Hoover did that. The bombing precision with two micro legs was routine in the first Gulf war with F-117. The crazy low level flying is really done in the test range in Washington.
