What are you hoping for most in "Top Gun: Maverick"?

    • @ThrdSonofSparda

What I'm really hoping for is a cameo appearance by Tim Robbins as he was in the first film. And maybe this time around there might be a nod to the work that Crew Chiefs do when the pilots aren't renting their planes (I know that last one is a stretch though).

I've seen it twice and am going to go again and again. It's THAT good! I haven't enjoyed a movie as much as I did this one since the original Top Gun in 1986. One of the best movies ever! And to think that the actors were actually in the fighter jets in the scenes and it was not greenscreen or CGI is mindblowing. Kudos to Tom Cruise for a movie well done! Perfection!

Maverick was found not responsible for the death of Goose. The responsibility was actually on Iceman. Iceman continued to push for the shot and wouldn't relent to Maverick's better position until it was inevitable that they would get caught in his jet wash. iceman pushed a bad position and caused a death on the team.

My exes Dad was a Fighter Pilot in WW2, Korea, and Vietnam. He was also an AF Test Pilot at Edwards AFB for several years. He was finally forced to retire from the Air Force after turning down promotion to General several times. His reason for turning down those promotions was simple. As he put it...."I wasn't made to fly a desk". At the time of his retirement he was a USAF Colonel (which equals Captain in the Navy), and Wing Commander of the 335th Fighter Squadron at Seymour Johnson AFB, North Carolina. I would imagine the fictional Maverick turned down promotion to Admiral for the same reason.

Generally commander of the 333rd, 334th, 335th and 336th are slotted Lt. Col. (and have been since 1948 (according to historical archives) as squadron commanders. I remember getting tossed off the flight line as young kid after sneaking on to watch F-4E's play touch and go (a time when the 337th FS was still apart of the 4th TFW. albeit briefly), then I remember the first F-15E's landing at the base. Just saw Maverick. Let's just say it's mind blowing as a sequel to Top Gun. It's by far the best flying movie and for sure Tom's best. They must've pulled all the stops in money to spend and getting the best for the money. It's got everything as far as ups downs and twists. Was an 8th or 9th grader when first show came out. Went like 3 or 4 times in one of the smallest theaters in the United States. Anyhow couldn't get enough. Being older and wiser now. Still have urges. It's hard. This movie can't hit blue ray fast enough. Anyhow it's a show NOT TO MISS IN THEATER. Enough said. Love everything as far as movies that Tom makes. Go see it and make sure to get the pop and popcorn. Have fun and enjoy the ride. TO ANOTHER DAY IN PARADISE. REALLY HOPE THERES ANOTHER TOP GUN.

In Hollywood, age is just a number. As a Lieutenant (O-3) in 1986, Mitchell would have been born around 1960 and would be 62 in 2022 with about 42 years on Active Duty. Passing his Flight Status medical examination for this aircraft type would be quite remarkable. In the real Navy, one's virtuosity or determination to fly will not overcome the zero-defect mentality, available billets and the relentless Clock.

The most plot-friendly means for explaining Pete "Maverick" Mitchell's stagnancy at O-6 despite a gleaming combat record would be to write in a scenario in which Mitchell had transitioned to IR (Inactive Reserve) status post-Bosnia (1992) as a freshly promoted Lieutenant Commander (O-4.) This timing would have allowed Mitchell's exposure to the fictional conflict involving the USS Enterprise defending the SS Layton from Soviet aircraft (1986), as well as service in Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm (1990 - 1991), and the NATO peacekeeping missions during the Bosnian War (1992.) During this break in service, Mitchell could have worked as a defense contractor and/or consultant for Lockheed Martin, General Dynamics, Boeing, Raytheon, or a myriad of other military industrialist companies. Mitchell would have returned to active duty post-9/11 in support of the GWOT. Mitchell would have had to have been retrained on a different fighter platform, avionics, and weapon system. If Mitchell was re-qualified for flight status by late 2002, he would have been capable of accumulating multiple combat deployments in support of OIF, OEF, OND, etc. Mitchell may have been promoted to Commander (O-5) by 2008; graduated from the Naval War College in the following years; and promoted to Captain (O-6) as late as 2014. Given the films original release plans of 2019, Mitchell's maximum time in grade would not have been exceeded by 2019, thus not violating the "move up or out" policies in the military. In fact, Depending on Mitchell's age, he may still be eligible for promotion to O-7. I could concoct a scenario in which Mitchell graduated from college (Class of '81) and entered OSC by the age of 20. This may allow for a scenario in which Mitchell is approximately 58-59 years old in the sequel.
    Bam! Plot hole all fixed.

If you watched and loved, and respected the power of the original 'Top Gun ', especially if you saw it in theaters back in the 80s.
You'll be just as drawn back into the continuation of this story. There's parts of the movie that will give you the chills, because it brings a touch of the first 'Top Gun'to tie in with the new one. I remember being in 5th or 6th grade seeing the first one in theaters. My mom bought the LP soundtrack, and played it while cleaning house. I had it for a Nintendo game. I had a Top Gun poster in my bedroom, and a t-shirt.

There isn't such a mystery as to why Maverick is "just" a Captain. Maverick LOVES flying fighter jets - and once you pin on Admiral stars you don't get to fly much after that. It is entirely conceivable that Maverick has intentionally throttled his promotions simply to keep flying. Real life fighter pilots have been known to do it on more than a few occasions.

I didn't know Mitchell was dead the whole movie. When Pete "Maverick" Mitchell attempts to reach MACH 9 in a supersonic jet, he pushes it further which is when things go wrong. The plane disintegrates in midair. My theory is that Maverick dies, and the rest of the movie is his death dream. It's also why when we first meet Rooster, he's dressed the same way as his father Goose was and sports an identical mustache, going on to play the same song at the piano. You could even take the theory further and argue that Maverick and Rooster's reconciliation in the finale is part of the fantasy, something that Maverick wasn't able to do in life.

Just saw the movie tonight. Gotta say it was worth the wait. However, having seen the original as a kid, and then watching the new one, I have to admit that it made me feel... a little old.
Still, fantastic film. Essentially a reboot of the first one, but it still involved a solid plot, good acting, brilliant cinematography (especially the aerial scenes, which they were basically required to nail if they wanted to make this a real Top Gun flick), and a little more light-hearted humor than in the original.
It was interesting to see the more mature Maverick, who was still the guy we knew and loved in 1986, but with his rough edges rounded off a little. Even the love scene was surprisingly tame and grown up (not "adult," but "actual adults acting like real adults").
I plan on seeing it again tomorrow night.

The cast nailed their parts (especially Rooster) and the flight scenes were phenomenal. The Val Kilmer scene was perfectly executed. Several very nice call-backs to the original, but it is not a remake of the original.
The story never lagged. There is obviously a lot of skipped history since the original, some of which they alluded to, but the old baggage didn't get in the way.

    Hi Looper,
Thank you for joining the dots together. It is pretty accurate so far. However I will not be a wet blanket to reveal anything.
Please do make time for the movie it is worth
    the time and money spent.
Top Gun : Maverick opened in Singapore officially today (26 May Thu).
Strangely, it was an emotional rollercoaster for me. Why ? Because I personally watched the original Top Gun back in the 1980s. To be able to witness a sequel; albeit a very good one - I am humbled.
Humbled by the dedication and details to string the 2 films together. The songs in this sequel to me played a critical role too (i'm a music fan too). The story line is really tight.
More importantly, this time really salute Tom for his brilliance in this sequel. Went into the cinema expecting a high energy pumping sequel (that it was). But more than that, it brought me back to that fateful day so many years ago when I watched Top Gun; for different reasons though.
The draw for Top Gun was about Tom Cruise being the up & coming star and also to find out where all the songs that have already hit Billboard chart fits into the movie like a jigsaw puzzle.
For Top Gun : Maverick, went in with an opened mind not expecting too much and all my senses were touched (for me at least).
It made me realized very badly that time that have flown away, actually all the while still remains if only one listen closely enough. It is within us.

Just saw it last night, very cool movie. I wont spoil it for anyone. The only thing I was hoping for and didn't get was an uncredited return performance by Viper (Tom Skerritt). He was great in the original Top Gun, (you may recall he was the head boss at Top Gun who had to warn Maverick that the rules at Top Gun are inflexible and he would either abide by them or he would be History) and although he is older at 89 he is still acting and just had two films released in 2021 including a western. Although I can see why they didn't want to bring back Kelly McGillis (cringe) some things are just better left in the past I guess. Definitely go see this movie, I highly recommend it. It also screened at the Cannes Film Festival on May 18 in an Official Selection Screening, where it received a five-minute standing ovation from the audience

You didn't watch the film, did you. Again, there have been "best Pilots" who refused or stepped down from the star. They don't want to be stuck behind a desk at the Pentagon. Being a fictional story here, Maverick would not likely still be flying with the skills and sharpness of a person thirty years younger than him, which would be age 30. Two, Goose's son would be 40 years old, not the young man presented. The Navy would not likely choose a 40 year old trainee. So, age and time is suspended in Maverick, if you want to be believed.

Here's my 10cents worth of what the movie is going to be about. First off, I do believe that it is Ice Mans funeral we see. If Val is in the movie it'll probably be a death bed scene. Next, I do remember hearing early on that the movie would have drones in it. But I don't think it's going to be a drone vs fighter plane scenario. I think the mission they're on is to destroy a drone that has fallen into enemy hands. Which enemy, the Iranians. In 2011 the Iranians did manage to take control of one of our top secret stealth drones and land it in Iran. Now what ties all this in is in one of the trailers there's a quick shot of an F-14. At first I thought that was just fan boy service and it wasn't going to be in the movie since the US retired the F-14 in 2006. Then I saw some still photo's which looks like both Maverick and Rooster are shot down. I believe they go in to destroy this top secret drone that the Iranians have, get shot down, and guess what's the only country that still fly's F-14's? Iran, they still have a squadron of F-14's. I'm betting the drone is kept on the airfield where they have their F-14's. Maverick and Rooster get shot down near the base, manage to sneak on it, and steal an F-14 and escape! Crazy but it is Hollywood!

My apologies I was trying to be too geeky there.
      Tim Robbins nickname was "Nuke"
in Bull Durham. I thought "Nuke" would be a good call sign.
