You are correct he did for a short spell, but sadly for him according to his autobiography the birds he regularly watched migrated soon after, even though they were not migratory birds.
I remember watching this. My mum let me stay up late even though it was school the next morning. The final finished past midnight but there were still 18.5 million people watching, the highest viewed programme after midnight in the United Kingdom. We'll never see those figures again, not in the age of multiplatform viewing.
@@martinradcliffe4798 I disagree, the standards are higher thanks to the sports science teams and diets of the players, the tables are perfectly smooth these days and the thuggery has been cut out, it's just not the spectacle that it was before and kids just want 20-20 staring these days

Once people found out Turner beat Spatsky in the 2021 online final using a looped video feed its popularity really suffered. I stayed up all night watching that. Spatsky was phenomenal. A lot of credit for Spatsky's success should go to his father, a welder from the shipyards of Gdansk.Often he would take his son to work and encourage him to stare at the arc from his welder. Such dedication and foresight.
That was me on the right in the crowd! Seat 8J. There was a fantastic warm up act beforehand. John Craven wept into an open Happy Shopper carrier bag while Desmond Lynam did an interpretive dance of Jurassic Park. Such a great day.
My dad queued for hours to get tickets for the final but they sold out. He comforted himself with the thought of watching it on TV but on the day of the final the TV packed in. Mum said he was never the same man afterwards.
Watching old youtube clips of classic staring finals now that the staring season has been cancelled. It's a shame but I think the World Staring Federation was absolutely correct to cancel this year's World Staring Championships in Buenos Aires due to the coronovirus.
Sad, but entirely agree with you. Mind you, the brilliance of yesteryear is at least some compensation. That classic 27-hour duel between Kampagnola and Nannak that the commentators mentioned still takes the breath away even all these years later. Modern youngsters like Baroni, Osiris and, of course, our very own Mark 'double-eye' Severn have much to learn!

Lots of glitz and hype, but on reflection a rather ill judged attempt to appeal to younger starers which ended in the infamous Hugenthaler controversy.
This final was all over in the first 9 minutes, Spatsky's swashbuckling staring quickly getting the better of Kampagnola. It dragged on, but after that first blow the title was in the bag for Spatsky.

I was a small boy when this match happened, I still remember my whole family around the TV, it was huge! I grew up staring! Where are the Spatskys now? The game has changed for the worse.
This bloody 7 year old boy was staring at me the other day in the queue. I was in a rotten mood so i glared back at him, staring back. It went on. The wee bugger one.
You may not believe, but Spatsky does not have many fans in Poland. He really acts like a jerk, what he confirmed after this classic final. We have promising young players, like U-17 Stare-Out Grand Slam winner Czeslaw Chrzaszczewski or amateur indoor champion Ziemowit Szczygiel. Not forgeting about our women team. These players have fans that follow them on every stare-out game. Anyway, Spatsky is now staring for shaikhs of Qatar, after he changed his nationality in 2011.
I heard that he returned to poland in 2018 and took on the job of a teacher specialising on algebra. However, he is also head of his own stareout club where he teaches blind children to take on the wonderful sport (and art) of staring. Amazing man.
Barry Davies is superbly believable in these. I figure it's because he is so well versed in feigning interest while commentating on the Men's 52m Underwater Backwards Swimming Cross during the Olympics.
A ridiculous overreaction. Staring at the top level can easily be done while observing proper social distancing. I accept the crowd is an integral part of professional staring, inspiring these gladiators to ever greater heights, but I’d rather have imperfect staring than no staring at all. The main thing is the starer’s safety must be paramount.
The good old days when professional staring was on terrestial TV and the whole family could watch together. The stars were all household names and great characters. Just not the same now.

It sparked a call for video replays to decide close calls, though many old-time starers are dead against the use of new technology, because it would slow down the dynamic cut-and-thrust of international staring.
Staring was made a compulsory sport in Australian Primary Schools in 2004 in the hope of claiming gold in the 2012 London Olympics but, due to pressure from Iran and North Korea, the sport was not recognised and so not included. Its a pity because many of the star starers would otherwise have been in the swimming squad and we would have won more gold in the pool. Well thats what Mum told me.

it's no longer a sport, it's a business. There's too much money in the game. Sky ruined it. Too many mediocre "starers" who are more concerned with endorsements and sponsorship. Kids today will never know about the greats of the sport and the dedication it took to get to the top. They glare now, rather than stare. When was the last time you witnessed a great contest? But true fans love the sport and we will continue to watch.
Well, I still believe there is hope. There were quite a few very talented newcomers during the last two years, such as Xaver Morat or Federique Krumash that are very promising indeed! Also, I think the corona pandemic revigorated the interest of our young for this marvelous sport.
I don't know, I think there are still people who are in it for the sport. Have you heard of Litz (you might know him as Lietz)? I think he changed his name after fame in his home country and it started to affect his stare. People were always trying to look him in the eyes, but he was quite young and couldn't handle the pressure after a while. But he was phenomenal. He could stare in his sleep. A true master. I once saw him in a bar in a tiny town in Serbia, Bogoyna, I think...close to the border with Bulgaria. He looked a mess. He was staring for beer money. No-one knew who he was but even then he was still annihilating people. They had no idea what hit them. But I knew. I bought him a drink, but didn't say anything about knowing who he was. I think he was thankful for the anonymity. Such a shame though seeing him like that. @@samkershaw8474
I bought Stare-Out for the Nintendo Wii last week. (£19.99 from Morrisons was the cheapest I could find). Some great gameplay, though having to use the nunchuck makes it awkward sometimes. Somewhat stuck on Level 12 now, though. I give it 7.5 / 10, mainly for value for money.

I still wear the togs each year on St Botolphs day. Happy times. Money, drugs and velcro destroyed that sport. Makes you think........

I reached the regional semi-final of the paraplegic staring competition in 2002. In these days there were no video refs. or appeal system. I was defeated due to a mistake when I was distracted by my opponents guide dog.
And when I grow old, my hair turns grey and they put me in a chair, I'll tell my great grandchildren that I was there. And they'll ask to hear the story of that dark October day, When I went down to and I saw Spatsky and Kampagnola play.

Its not purely about the UK market anymore. Staring is huge in South America and China now - thats where the money is made these days.
I'm from Milan, and I went to a seminar held by Kampagnola last year. A good athlete, but a superb teacher. Mindblowing, really.

Normally real commentators and newsreaders are rubbish when they have to act doing it in a film or TV show, but he does a masterful job here.
