38. A quick trip to Deal in Kent in the campervan

- Опубліковано 10 січ 2020
- On December 29th, some wonderful friends I used to work in Kent with decided to have a catch-up and meal at a local pub, and I was invited along too. I went down in the campervan and stayed overnight on the road overlooking the sea. Before I left in the morning, I went for a quick tour of the seafront. This is the video of that trip (obviously)
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

David, please continue what you are doing, and how you present it on both the Vandemonium feed and Cruising the Cut. Of all the UA-cam presentations (Vandemonium/Cruising the Cut) you stand out from the crowd. Don't change, keep it up and more, more, more!
Hey, might want to check those gearbox bolts on the van 😉
Thank you for having the Twix candy bar. I worked at Mars as a maintenance technician and Twix was the candy line that I started on. You are helping fund my retirement. And thanks for the walk about Deal and the short, but interesting, history lesson. I'll likely never see Deal, but you have given me some insight. Especially interesting was the bit about the pier build being botched. Keep up the good work.
Nice to see you in a change of venue. As always, whether on the water or in the van, I enjoy your narration of the world around you with an added touch of your special brand of humor. Glad you posted about this vlog
After u woke and had breakfast, when u first poked the camera out, that brick building on the green is the best breakfast cafe in Deal imo highly recommended! And pete the owner is a awsome friendly chap as well
My FAVORITE of your van travel vlogs is DEAL: Architecture, natural scenery, and a cozy look at van living. Perhaps you could find adjustable jack stands to install at each corner.
So nostalgic. I lived and worked in walmer . I think my favorite deal pub was the admiral penn which may no longer exist. Thank you for a glimpse of memory lane.
A very agreeable little film Sir 👍🏻
Thank you for that little trip to Deal. It brings back some early memories for me as a little boy in short trousers
around 1949/50 when my aunt Flo took me, my sister and a cousin for a holiday. (I think my baby brother had just arrived!) The highlight for me was a trip in a boat called Arcadia, like the clinker type one on the beach in your video. We went out to see the wrecks on the Goodwin Sands. It was strange to see the funnels and masts of several ships there sticking up out of the water. Very spooky. I usually watch your Cruising the Cut videos but had to watch this as I've not been back to Deal since. Glad you enjoyed meeting your friends. Thanks, good video.
So nice to see you in our own back garden ... so to speak.
We thought you were permenantly consigned to the Midlands and places north west!
This time you drove thru everywhere which is local to us...and where we drive every day.
Oh yes we drive down the M1, along the M25, and all the way to Deal...frequently..over the Kent Bump on Betty's bridge.
It's totally surprising to say how fascinating and pleasant it is to see The world famous Canal Cut Cruiser in Deal and Walmer...
Lovely to know you've visited this happy edge of England.
From our friends balcony we'd have been looking down on your van... we didn't hear you snoring!
A happy little vlog...
Ta for this ..
PS...we're members of the M25 Appreciation Society..so pls do love our little orbital delight...infamous indeed !
I hate the M25!!! Sorry ;-)
Sob Sob ... chuckle
The M25 is like Marmite...love it not...no middle choice..
I followed over from your narrow boat channel. I rather enjoyed you showing the menu of the pub. I hope you will continue to share some of the culinary examples of places you frequent on this channel. Perhaps you could travel to France & Belgium in your van.
Made a very nice change to have a dry land video, thank you for that.👍
That was a nice treat for this USA gal. Bet its a busy place in summer! Thanks for the quick tour! Your videos are always so informative! 😎
I enjoy your narrowboating vlog very much, and shall be taking my daughter and family on a narrowboat cruise in April. Your van vlog was a delight. I spent at least 13 of my chilhood years in Deal: learnt to sail in the Downs Sailing Club, went to School in Sandwich, lived for a couple of years in the house RIGHT NEXT to the Kings Head. The old lifeboat, the Charles Dibdin, was about 45ft, sat on a tilting, swiveling cradle, and was launched down the beach over greased wooden planks, smashing into the waves. A sight to see. The sea in Deal may not look like a good anchorage, but in fact “The Downs” was a much valued anchorage for naval and merchant ships. The Goodwin Sands, about 3 miles offshore and a graveyard of over a 1,000 ships and countless numbers of sailors, provides an excellent breakwater. One of the reasons that the time ball was put there. A wonderful nostalgic journey for me, thank you.
Great! Glad you enjoyed it.
Another "personal level" documentary, magnificent. Really nice to watch on a Sunday breakfast. I thank you for it.
A visit to my home town! That's a surprise bearing in mind it's about as far away from a canal as you can get in England. Excellent video, some nice shots of Deal. Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed our little town!
That was fun. Typically in US we use the word "beach" mainly for shoreline with sand, not so much pebbles, or we qualify it as a "pebble beach" like the famous Golf Club.
We created the language though.
(YOUR WELCOME)
A very pleasant video for a Sunday morning. Look forward to your next adventure David.
Yes, David, do feel free to make it sooner rather than later; and.......
Noting your (word) skill in video titling, I think your van should have a name (& by suggesting this means I've already ruled out 'Vandemonium'). HubNut's current car is called Betty. Perhaps you can either come up with or invite some 'crafty' names & then do a poll on here for us to choose - if you like ?
Sunsets over the south east coast. Beautiful. It inspired Turner you know.
I do know! Hence the Turner gallery in Margate :-)
I love your fancy breakfast, rice crispies with a few corn flakes sprinkled on top - genius 🤣
Deal was our go to place for a few days away when I was a young bloke in South London in the 70s. Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown. Had some great times in some great pubs.
Watching this during lockdown, a piece of history hopfuly to be repeatable
King's Head good pub. As a youngster I could wolf down one of their burgers and still do an afternoon's work.
Loved this vid. Would like to see more like this. It is not like the usual ones. Very informative. California girl.
He did indeed chose a lovely corner of England Roberta I totally agree with you.
More please David.
I really loved this vlog!
Every 2-3 weeks had to cross the Channel on my business trips to Sutton in Surrey, it was either Dover or Ramsgate as entrance points into the UK, or sometimes Harwich, which was expensive so not preferred.
Many times, being early or late, had to pass time between Ramsgate and Dover waiting for the next place on ferry or Hovercraft.
Good memories indeed, including the pub, drank some pints there.....
Quite a pretty little town. Always love a nice walk on a beach and out on a pier. I will have to say that tunnel seems quite large, well lit and was much quicker to navigate than all the others you've taken us through! Cheers!
Marvelous tour! Thanks so much for taking us along.
Strange how many different types of beaches there are scattered over the globe, we have white sand beaches in my state of Alabama.
Lovely video - brings back memories of beautiful England that I could visit before Covid
Traffic jams, speed cameras, roundabouts..
makes one appreciate the laid back, easy going, slow & steady Narrowboat Lyfe
This vlog is going to be a great 'direction' assistance if I ever get to the UK . It's almost a full blown travelblog. Thankyou. Very nice.
I used o work and stay in Deal, I love this town. Great vlog Sir.
Glad you enjoyed it
Thanks David..always a treat..I noted that even on your Van Channel you cant resist talking about and videoing assorted boats..lol..Cheers and a Happy New Year to you and yours!
Thank you so much! You really should be getting huge sums of money from what I'm going to call "The British Tourist Board" for doing this, I'm going there, and I don't think I'm alone. Can you do the same for Sweden?
Very interesting David. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for all the sea-related footage! Truth be told, I'm so desperately attracted to the sea (while not living anywhere near it) that I'm starting to strongly suspect I may have been a fish in some previous life. Well, maybe a mer...man or something...?
Thank you for a very enjoyable vlog.
Being from Down Under, (no, our part of it is not burning at the moment, we had our bit of panic in November) I am always left with a smile when Europeans and the English talk about long drives. A weekend getaway for us, the wife and I, usually involves about a 3 hour drive to and from, heading up to see the wife's family only takes about 8hours (about 700klm each way), while driving up to see dear friends who live elsewhere in the same state as us is a leisurely 2 days each way (about 3400klm in total). We, however, grew up with this sort of thing being the norm so it doesn't feel unusual. Whereas in England and Europe the same distances would take you through multiple countries or drowning in the Atlantic depending on which direction you took off in.
Hi Harry, mid north coast NSW here. Lol it is hard for some overseas friends to understand the scope of Australia. Truck driving hubby quite often used to wake me at 4.00 Sunday mornings asking if I wanted to go to Tamworth for breakfast. Tamworth is only 4 hours over the Great Divide. So we would head off for breakfast, back down the New England, back north from Newcastle. This was about 5.5 hours. Passes the time. We had our fires in October and November. Glad to hear you are okay. Keep safe. Cheers
I'm willing to bet your long drives aren't as madly congested and full of lane-changing maniacs as ours..?
@@Vandemonium Agreed, our issue comes from the major distances involved, yours mostly stems from the very high number of other vehicles on the same piece of road. Personally I'm happy to have our problem, there's a much higher chance of having a womble at the wheel of a nearby vehicle when there are so many more around. Stay safe David, love your vids.
@@dianemorris6904 HI Diane. It's sobering to realise that this fire disaster as been ongoing for almost 3 months somewhere in Aus. Talking about distance, I worked on an IT conference in Brisbane quite some years ago and got friendly with a couple of Americans who attended. They wanted to do a bit of a driving holiday post conference so we asked what they had planned. Their idea was to drive up to Cairns, hit the reef, then head out to Uluru (Ayers Rock for non-Australians), then back to Sydney for their flights home. Ok, ambitious but doable, how long are you staying after the conference we asked. Oh, a week was the response... we (my fellow AV crew and I) lost it, big smiles, lots of chuckling, sorry guys that ain't going to happen. We explained that it would take them 2 days just to get to Cairns, that being about 1700km, let alone the rest of the trip (7106km for anyone wondering). They decided to fly and just stay in Cairns and region for the week but were totally surprised by the distances involved. Our relatively small population makes people think that Aus is a lot smaller than it really is.
@@Vandemonium Yikes, ain't that the truth?
I love it when a favorite UA-camr subscribes to another of my favorite UA-camrs, in this case you following the RV Geeks.
I've seen videos about the RNLI before and their work is very impressive. Seeing them launch their boats, especially the larger boats that launch directly into the water down a ramp, is something else. AFAIK we don't have anything quite like the RNLI on this side of the pond.
Like this one, nice bit of local history. 👍
Never been to Deal but it looks a lovely place David...like it.... love your witty remarks and you make me chuckle 😁....you are so natural and your videos are lovely and informative...thanks again...cheers honey xxx
Thanks Monnie!
Very pleasant tour, thanks for taking us along. Beautiful town.
Nice diversion. 220 miles takes me from Albuquerque to Tucumcari on the New Mexico Texas border. About 2.5 hours. Definitely not an A road. I enjoyed the tea making ;) Oh and they used to have a beach there but nothing as picturesque.
Thanks David for another great vlog. I would love to have a little camper and travel around the uk, maybe one day.
As I've noted once before, David, your many posts on both of your channels are like the dust covered bottles in a cherished old wind cellar with many excellent vintages waiting to be discovered. Just stumbled on this one. Splendid, as usual. Cheers.
Er, that would be WINE cellar...not WIND. Gosh...
Thank you 😊
Great vlog, in a van or narrow boat you do an outstanding job. Fun, calming and informative. Thank you for the trip south. 😎👍👍🚐💖
Good to see the Royal Marine Band memorial . I went to the Barracks in Dec1958 and your video was my first visit since leaving a few months later...about 60 years ago ! Lovely vlog.
Thanks of showing us the lifeboats those guys and gals are impressive.
Great video! I really enjoyed the tour of Deal. Lovely!
I just tuned in and thought the canal boat was going a fast hahaha. Like your videos mate
Thank you
If the third level is permanently under water, i guess they must of had to use divers, but then when they were building it, they must have thought, hang on a minute. The water is never going lower then this level we are putting so much effort in to build. Plus we are getting nibbled at by killer sharks (well maybe sardines really). 😁
Kent is one county I've never been to. I have put a foot into east Sussex when I went to the Bluebell Railway but no further then that. Another great video as always David.
Have never heard of a Time Ball - thanks for sharing that with us. Fishing boats really are photogenic. Great video, appreciate seeing your part of the world. Glad you had a good visit with friends. Look forward to the next video.
Delightful travelogue. I think you could make a traffic jam entertaining.
Nicely done yet again. Thank you.
Cracking video, thanks for sharing. Love Deal, beautiful place. Keep up the good work.
Brilliant vlog, thank you for bringing us along! Cheers!
Great as always David. Happy new year!
Happy new year David. I always enjoy your videos.
Loved the video. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
very pleasant, well presented. thank you.
Thanks for Video and tour, very nice.
Thanks for sharing your short trip David. I thought the time ball was interesting. Happy 2020 to you!
Time balls are, or at least have been, a common feature in harbors so that the sailors can set their clocks. That was how they determined longitude back then, time in a fixed location (clock) compared to local time where the ship was (sextant), one degree longitude per 4 minutes difference. There is a very good mini series with Jeremy Irons called Longitude which tells the story of how the longitude problem was solved.
Another wonderful video and enjoyed learning of the town's history.
Enjoyable trip David.....thanks for sharing
Leveling blocks are what you are talking about. Thanks for sharing David.
Great vlog Dave, thanks.
Hallo David!
Thank you so much for your wonderful vlog about Deal!
It was a wonderful 'trip down memory lane' for me, as I used to live in Dartford, many decades ago, and I used to frequently visit Deal, or Hastings!
Oh, how things have changed, as far as roads are concerned!
All love, and best wishes for 2020!
Claire, Berlin
great vlog!
Quality always shows!! Thanks. M
Superb David..I love the sound of waves on the beach
Well done & loved the deal beach view. Take care & have a great week
That was a nice excursion. Thanks for sharing
Watching this in May 2020,nice to see a pub full of people.Little did they know what was about to follow !
Great trip and great video!
Thx for taking us along.
I really need to vist your lovely country...
:-D
I have no video ambitions as it seems too all consuming for my temperament. And my wife puts up heroically with still photography. BUT were I to do videos this is how I’d do them. Informative clear with long enough shots and crisp editing. You do this very well. Almost as well as you build camper vans... Very good.
nice goin m8, deals nice. thanks for letting me tag along. stay safe an well eh!
that's the first time that I've been to Deal. Looks like a really nice place. The guided tour was very interesting. Super video - thanks David
Great video nice sceneries and great reporting! Thanks!
Keep these videos coming. Very much appreciated. 👍
Enjoyed the trip
Thanks for another excellent video.
The tour of the town and the coast was very interesting and enjoyable. I would love to have a look around there myself.
Best Of Luck
Very enjoyable video. Good friends for four hour drive but interesting sights once there. Thanks for showing us.
Thank you again David , for a wonderful view of your country ! Cheers from California.
You were lucky with the traffic and the weather. Lovely colours and textures; the pebbles for instance. Great filming and editing and a perfectly paced commentary. I like your sense of humour and freindliness.
Thank you
I fully expected an early morning embrace of the sea followed by a hearty fry up!! Of course that's what I would have done :-)
I did ponder finding a nice greasy spoon for a fryup but somehow forgot to!
well now David, that's surely a scenic and interesting area - a good history lesson for me this morning - thanks
Nice to have a van video again... 🙂 I've converted a short wheel base standard height Citroen Relay over a number of months, and have just had my first week living in it full time!!! One of the first accessories I purchased was a set of leveling ramps, a pair of Milenco ramps that had three steps up in height... Ramps are different heights, so have a good look around and see what would suit you... They are a God send at times... 😁
I was going to make some naff comment about he should have had a Citroen as they'd likely be self-levelling ;)
Very pretty area. Thank you for sharing.
In the van, on the boat, I do enjoy your videos. Thank you!!
Nice cozy little van setup. All the basics you need for comfort. And what a quaint little spot. Thank you for taking us along.
Brilliant video nice to see you done your research . . lost count how many times been to Deal castle as grand parents lived not far away.
Not been to Deal for a few years and its hardly changed
My home town.. that was a nice surprise. I used to live in one of those white flats along the beach. Moved away to the Midlands in 2001 so thanks for the video, nice memories.
Love cruising the cut, and vandemonium. Keep up the good work I find you very entertaining and informative.
Well done Sir, and just down the road from me! I'm sure it's been said 1000 times in the comments, but the ramps you seek are simply called levelling ramps, available from any caravan/motorhome shop or, of course, more cheaply online. There are lots of other fancy options for levelling, but ramps are simple, cheap and failproof!
I just carry a few bits of wood, stack the right ones in front of the tire and pull ahead a tiny bit so the tire is resting on them. It's not perfect but it's good enough. And if I forget them there's no great monetary loss.
Awesome spot. thank you!
What a good Deal. Thanks for taking us along.
Very nice, it's fun to watch.
Oh man, amazing video my friend.
Glad you had a great time. We really like the van layout. Looks to be working for you pretty good and comfortable more importantly.
Safe travels my friend! 👍✌️
Excellent travel vlog. Great to see Vandemonium once again.
Thanks for this tour. I have only been in your country a couple of times, I'm from the US, but I have always enjoyed its beauty. Makes me want to visit again.
It's good to see you out and about in the van I live in Oregon in the US and so enjoy both your channels thank you for sharing!
