Thank you for having the Twix candy bar. I worked at Mars as a maintenance technician and Twix was the candy line that I started on. You are helping fund my retirement. And thanks for the walk about Deal and the short, but interesting, history lesson. I'll likely never see Deal, but you have given me some insight. Especially interesting was the bit about the pier build being botched. Keep up the good work.
So nostalgic. I lived and worked in walmer . I think my favorite deal pub was the admiral penn which may no longer exist. Thank you for a glimpse of memory lane.
After u woke and had breakfast, when u first poked the camera out, that brick building on the green is the best breakfast cafe in Deal imo highly recommended! And pete the owner is a awsome friendly chap as well
My FAVORITE of your van travel vlogs is DEAL: Architecture, natural scenery, and a cozy look at van living. Perhaps you could find adjustable jack stands to install at each corner.
So nice to see you in our own back garden ... so to speak. We thought you were permenantly consigned to the Midlands and places north west! This time you drove thru everywhere which is local to us...and where we drive every day. Oh yes we drive down the M1, along the M25, and all the way to Deal...frequently..over the Kent Bump on Betty's bridge. It's totally surprising to say how fascinating and pleasant it is to see The world famous Canal Cut Cruiser in Deal and Walmer... Lovely to know you've visited this happy edge of England. From our friends balcony we'd have been looking down on your van... we didn't hear you snoring! A happy little vlog... Ta for this .. PS...we're members of the M25 Appreciation Society..so pls do love our little orbital delight...infamous indeed !
Thank you so much! You really should be getting huge sums of money from what I'm going to call "The British Tourist Board" for doing this, I'm going there, and I don't think I'm alone. Can you do the same for Sweden?
Yes, David, do feel free to make it sooner rather than later; and....... Noting your (word) skill in video titling, I think your van should have a name (& by suggesting this means I've already ruled out 'Vandemonium'). HubNut's current car is called Betty. Perhaps you can either come up with or invite some 'crafty' names & then do a poll on here for us to choose - if you like ?
Thank you for that little trip to Deal. It brings back some early memories for me as a little boy in short trousers around 1949/50 when my aunt Flo took me, my sister and a cousin for a holiday. (I think my baby brother had just arrived!) The highlight for me was a trip in a boat called Arcadia, like the clinker type one on the beach in your video. We went out to see the wrecks on the Goodwin Sands. It was strange to see the funnels and masts of several ships there sticking up out of the water. Very spooky. I usually watch your Cruising the Cut videos but had to watch this as I've not been back to Deal since. Glad you enjoyed meeting your friends. Thanks, good video.
I enjoy your narrowboating vlog very much, and shall be taking my daughter and family on a narrowboat cruise in April. Your van vlog was a delight. I spent at least 13 of my chilhood years in Deal: learnt to sail in the Downs Sailing Club, went to School in Sandwich, lived for a couple of years in the house RIGHT NEXT to the Kings Head. The old lifeboat, the Charles Dibdin, was about 45ft, sat on a tilting, swiveling cradle, and was launched down the beach over greased wooden planks, smashing into the waves. A sight to see. The sea in Deal may not look like a good anchorage, but in fact “The Downs” was a much valued anchorage for naval and merchant ships. The Goodwin Sands, about 3 miles offshore and a graveyard of over a 1,000 ships and countless numbers of sailors, provides an excellent breakwater. One of the reasons that the time ball was put there. A wonderful nostalgic journey for me, thank you.
I followed over from your narrow boat channel. I rather enjoyed you showing the menu of the pub. I hope you will continue to share some of the culinary examples of places you frequent on this channel. Perhaps you could travel to France & Belgium in your van.
A visit to my home town! That's a surprise bearing in mind it's about as far away from a canal as you can get in England. Excellent video, some nice shots of Deal. Thank you, I am glad you enjoyed our little town!
That was fun. Typically in US we use the word "beach" mainly for shoreline with sand, not so much pebbles, or we qualify it as a "pebble beach" like the famous Golf Club.
I really loved this vlog! Every 2-3 weeks had to cross the Channel on my business trips to Sutton in Surrey, it was either Dover or Ramsgate as entrance points into the UK, or sometimes Harwich, which was expensive so not preferred. Many times, being early or late, had to pass time between Ramsgate and Dover waiting for the next place on ferry or Hovercraft. Good memories indeed, including the pub, drank some pints there.....
Quite a pretty little town. Always love a nice walk on a beach and out on a pier. I will have to say that tunnel seems quite large, well lit and was much quicker to navigate than all the others you've taken us through! Cheers!
Deal was our go to place for a few days away when I was a young bloke in South London in the 70s. Deal, Walmer and Kingsdown. Had some great times in some great pubs.
Marvelous tour! Thanks so much for taking us along. Strange how many different types of beaches there are scattered over the globe, we have white sand beaches in my state of Alabama.
Thanks for all the sea-related footage! Truth be told, I'm so desperately attracted to the sea (while not living anywhere near it) that I'm starting to strongly suspect I may have been a fish in some previous life. Well, maybe a mer...man or something...?
Being from Down Under, (no, our part of it is not burning at the moment, we had our bit of panic in November) I am always left with a smile when Europeans and the English talk about long drives. A weekend getaway for us, the wife and I, usually involves about a 3 hour drive to and from, heading up to see the wife's family only takes about 8hours (about 700klm each way), while driving up to see dear friends who live elsewhere in the same state as us is a leisurely 2 days each way (about 3400klm in total). We, however, grew up with this sort of thing being the norm so it doesn't feel unusual. Whereas in England and Europe the same distances would take you through multiple countries or drowning in the Atlantic depending on which direction you took off in.
Hi Harry, mid north coast NSW here. Lol it is hard for some overseas friends to understand the scope of Australia. Truck driving hubby quite often used to wake me at 4.00 Sunday mornings asking if I wanted to go to Tamworth for breakfast. Tamworth is only 4 hours over the Great Divide. So we would head off for breakfast, back down the New England, back north from Newcastle. This was about 5.5 hours. Passes the time. We had our fires in October and November. Glad to hear you are okay. Keep safe. Cheers
@@Vandemonium Agreed, our issue comes from the major distances involved, yours mostly stems from the very high number of other vehicles on the same piece of road. Personally I'm happy to have our problem, there's a much higher chance of having a womble at the wheel of a nearby vehicle when there are so many more around. Stay safe David, love your vids.
@@dianemorris6904 HI Diane. It's sobering to realise that this fire disaster as been ongoing for almost 3 months somewhere in Aus. Talking about distance, I worked on an IT conference in Brisbane quite some years ago and got friendly with a couple of Americans who attended. They wanted to do a bit of a driving holiday post conference so we asked what they had planned. Their idea was to drive up to Cairns, hit the reef, then head out to Uluru (Ayers Rock for non-Australians), then back to Sydney for their flights home. Ok, ambitious but doable, how long are you staying after the conference we asked. Oh, a week was the response... we (my fellow AV crew and I) lost it, big smiles, lots of chuckling, sorry guys that ain't going to happen. We explained that it would take them 2 days just to get to Cairns, that being about 1700km, let alone the rest of the trip (7106km for anyone wondering). They decided to fly and just stay in Cairns and region for the week but were totally surprised by the distances involved. Our relatively small population makes people think that Aus is a lot smaller than it really is.
If the third level is permanently under water, i guess they must of had to use divers, but then when they were building it, they must have thought, hang on a minute. Nice to have a van video again... 🙂 I've converted a short wheel base standard height Citroen Relay over a number of months, and have just had my first week living in it full time!!! Thanks for another excellent video. The tour of the town and the coast was very interesting and enjoyable. I would love to have a look around there myself. Best Of Luck
I have no video ambitions as it seems too all consuming for my temperament. And my wife puts up heroically with still photography. BUT were I to do videos this is how I’d do them. Informative clear with long enough shots and crisp editing. You do this very well. Almost as well as you build camper vans... Very good.
Time balls are, or at least have been, a common feature in harbors so that the sailors can set their clocks. That was how they determined longitude back then, time in a fixed location (clock) compared to local time where the ship was (sextant), one degree longitude per 4 minutes difference. There is a very good mini series with Jeremy Irons called Longitude which tells the story of how the longitude problem was solved.
we enjoyed this presentation , we like your tea kettle , your teabag looked liked the kind we like tetley british blend . the sunset was beautiful . thankyou and cheers,
Looks like a lovely trip... it was kinda nice to see a British pub menu, all sounded good... what a cute little seaside town... it must be lovely to live in such a place?... thank you for taking us along on your trip.
You're looking for Leveling Blocks. Camco makes a nice set, ten blocks of sturdy yellow plastic in their own storage bag. They support my van alright (8,000 lbs. GVW) so they should hold yours up just fine. A very fine seaside visit, which I'm sad to say in America would be clogged by fat, noisy tourists throwing their litter everywhere, even at this time of the year. I live very close to the Chesapeake Bay, the environment is very similar. Pleasant to see that there are still places in the world where people respect public space.
8:27 Don't go and buy any fancy stands. Head off to a local lumber/hardware store and see if they have a 4 foot long piece of cedar wood, or a piece of pressure treated lumber, measuring 2 inches deep by 10 inches wide. Then cut it into 1 foot long pieces. You'll have 4 pieces of wood that will do the job, and they won't take up much space in the van. They'll give you some flexibility on height as well if needed by stacking them as required. Most likely less expensive then a purchased stand.
Thanks for this David, and yes, beach huts are VERY British indeed, and so.is the idea of renting deckchairs on the beach (if they still do that). We have so much more space here in Canada that a day at the seaside surrounded by hundreds of other tourists and their screaming kids is not high on our bucket list. I suspect you feel the same way! Your trip was breathtakingly fast compared to canal time, and I suspect you were glad to get back to cruising the cut. John, Ontario, Canada

The tour of the town and the coast was very interesting and enjoyable. I would love to have a look around there myself.
Best Of Luck
Loved the video. Thanks for sharing your trip with us.
I have no video ambitions as it seems too all consuming for my temperament. And my wife puts up heroically with still photography. BUT were I to do videos this is how I’d do them. Informative clear with long enough shots and crisp editing. You do this very well. Almost as well as you build camper vans... Very good.
great vlog!
I'm sooo not use to seeing the scenery go by so fast when watching one of your videos
very pleasant, well presented. thank you.
Thanks for sharing your short trip David. I thought the time ball was interesting. Happy 2020 to you!
Enjoyable trip David.....thanks for sharing
The grey black out screens look absolutely spot on
I'm quite pleased with them, considering they were a bit of an afterthought.
Love cruising the cut, and vandemonium. Keep up the good work I find you very entertaining and informative.
we enjoyed this presentation , we like your tea kettle , your teabag looked liked the kind we like tetley british blend . the sunset was beautiful . thankyou and cheers,
Looks like a lovely trip... it was kinda nice to see a British pub menu, all sounded good... what a cute little seaside town... it must be lovely to live in such a place?... thank you for taking us along on your trip.
It's good to see you out and about in the van I live in Oregon in the US and so enjoy both your channels thank you for sharing!
Quality always shows!! Thanks. M
nice goin m8, deals nice. thanks for letting me tag along. stay safe an well eh!

I'm not sure you can see belgium from Deal! France yes on a clear day.
Yes, you can see Belgium, it's only the other side of Dunkirk.
I know you can definately see Belgium from France.
Nice cozy little van setup. All the basics you need for comfort. And what a quaint little spot. Thank you for taking us along.
