53. Visiting Stroud and Gloucester in the campervan

- The van had to go for its annual MoT safety check and immediately afterwards I needed to visit Stroud to look at a roundabout, then onto Gloucester for some canal filming. So I made this vlog of the journey.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

Hi David, great video as usual. Being pedantic, Lechlade is on the Thames. 😊😊
Ah yes, you are quite correct; mea culpa - not thinking properly. I suspect I meant to talk about it connecting to the Oxford canal via the Thames at Lechlade but I’m very easily confused.
@@Vandemonium No worries, we are on the G and S so live it all most days. Hope life is treating you well. 👍👍
I don’t know how you do it David, but you can make random ordinary trips into very entertaining stories. It’s a gift. You should do something with it.. oh? You already did! 😏
What a very pleasant part of the world - thanks for the guided tour.
David, your way of commenting and your humour are one-of-a-kind in the narrowboat and the van scene. Just wonderful, thanks for entertaining us.
Mate, you're on to something. Please, when you are able, do more historical camper Van tours!!! This was brilliant!
Expecting a camper vlog, I was happy to find a sighting of canals and Narrowboats… … love those sailing ships too💜……thx
"Vanning the Cut" I always enjoy your videos showing locales in the UK. Very different, and often more interesting, than towns here in the US.
Vanning the Macadam
I very much enjoyed this one David. I am always so impressed with how the British people really pour in their resources to preserve and to protect their historical heritage. The steam crane was quite the eye candy indeed. I hope your A/C repairs aren't too costly. Take very good care David and thanks again for another interesting video. I'm looking forward to the upcoming documentaries you will be posting to Cruising the Cut.
Hi David it's so nice to hear and see you again. Thanks for taking us along on your trip. Gloria 🐂
This was an awesome video. As an American, and one who doesn't have access to all the beauty, and history that your country has to offer, I really appreciate your informative and educational videos. I miss your "CruisingtheCut" videos, but these are great too. Thank you for taking the time to share them with us.
The US has some of the most spectacular natural splendor - Yellowstone, glacier national, river of no return, Yosemite, everglades, Appalachia and Appalachian trail, white mountains green mountains smokey mountains, the pallouse, Rockies.
That new section of canal is brilliant , well done Cotswold canal trust , another great Blog David ! cheese sandwich now finished I shall have to return to working
Hi David. Interesting and informative video. Enjoyed it. Miss you and looking forward to the next one. Travel safe.
your video adventures give me great peace and joy. many thanks
I'm still amazed at how narrow those roads are and how quickly everyone drives on them!! Then again, being in North America maybe we're just spoiled and used to having so much extra space? That was a very nice little venture, and the educational portion once again greatly appreciated!
Bear in mind the extreme wide angle of the lens makes it look as though I’m going a lot faster than in reality!
@@Vandemonium OK! that makes a lot of sense, thanks for that as it did look like you were flying! Then again, being used to watching the progression of the boat down the canal has me thinking slow! LOL Thanks again!
Very interesting and entertaining as always. Thank you for never adding totally unnecessary music to your videos.
"More and moored narrowboats!" made me chuckle--thanks for another informative and entertaining video, David!
Best day trip I have had in a while . Thanks David.
Hello there, I thoroughly enjoyed this video as I do pretty much all of your submission (you had me at cheese sandwich) lol. Such beautiful countryside, canals and roadways. I’m from Canada and every time l watch one of your videos from either of your channels I truly marvel in the history you share. Being that all my family came to Canada from England in the early 1900s, I hope to one day visit your beautiful country. Thank you for giving me many ideas on where to venture!
Thank you!
I love the little English villages with those old houses and small shops, they are so peaceful, quiet and clean compared to the big cities.
Was quite pleased to see you visiting the canals being restored that way, I took a cycle trip along those canals and stayed at that very campsite ealier this year inspired to go and see more of the canals around the west in no small part (mainly) by your cruising the cut channel! They wer not lying about the low water pressure!
A kind of "cross-over" video with your Cruising the cut channel!
Entertaining and informative as always.
Thank you 😀
I used to work on Gloucester docks in a Thames Barge converted to a restaurant. Around 1990 I think. Time flies. They'd just started renovating the docks, it looks so good. Thanks for sharing this, it brought some happy memories.
Once again-another enjoyable vlog-from the great Davvid! Both informative and entertaining with your witty sense of humor. From Peugeot specialists to Canal restorations to noodles & donuts--wow-always looking forward to your next adventure!
Glad you enjoyed it
I hope to see more trip vlogs, both narrowboat and van. They really help me relax. Thank you David.
Get your motor RUNNING... Get out on the HIGHWAY... heat up a cuppa tea, and let's go up the A-5! David is.....BORN TO BE WILD!
8:43 Its nice that when you go out at night and come back with one to many pints, all the apartments/flats are labeled so you can fine your place a bit easier! 👍😁🍺
7:38 I found myself giving a wave of thanks to that van driver - Is lockdown getting to me?
Yep... sad isn't it?... I even tried flashing my lights as well.
I really missed your videos. Thank you very much for posting this. You have such a wonderful vlogie personality.
Cheers (I am still posting videos!)
Thanks for the video.
Leaving an open air concert in North Norfolk , I once told my Garmin to choose the most “direct route”.
We spent an hour on the unmetalled local byways, including a tour of the back gardens of a row of cottages.
Fortunately by the time we reached a proper road (3 miles from the venue!), the traffic had cleared!
Most enjoyable trip. Can’t get over how quiet the roads were regarding traffic. Beautiful scenery and colours. Clean looking docks. But very quiet. Thank you for taking us with you.
Isn't it surreal? Those docks that must have been bustling, the cranes, railroad cars, boats, narrowboats all bustling to and fro. It must have been thumping with life and the creaks, revving engines and shouts that come with it. I think I prefer our current ways but the sterile shipping containers and precise crane movements with the crackle of radios can't compare, can it?
It may have been a hot mess of metal, men and mayhem but it was a community that demanded participation should you meander through. Hm.
Excellent, just so perfect for viewing on a very very very rainy day in OHIO USA... Thanks ! 😉
Fantastic video David. I was lured here funnily enough because I strangely thought it might be about the Gloucester and Stroud in Australia... you know the one north of another Aussie city called Newcastle..(you probably haven't heard of them)... but I was delighted by the error and so glad to see the the UK is valuing it's canals and it's old industrial architecture which I consider just beautiful. If I lived there again a flat overlooking a canal would do me fine. If travelling is ever allowed again.
Oddly enough, I had heard of the Aussie Stroud and Gloucester and Newcastle - never been there though.
And now you've made me want to visit Gloucester as well! My maps getting filled!
But thank you anyway, great video.
Make sure you visit our cathedral too - burial place of Edward II and also filming location for Harry Potter and Doctor Who , amongst other things
Well, as no-one's revealed the title source:
Doctor Foster went to Gloucester,
In a shower of rain;
He stepped in a puddle,
Right up to his middle,
And never went there again.
Remember this from far too long ago. Always wondered why middle and puddle were supposed to rhyme. Seems that piddle used to mean little stream, which makes much more sense. So there's speculation that it was changed to puddle sometime back.
You beat me by an hour 👍🏻💪🏻
Thank you! Couldn’t figure out the connection 😂
Two weeks ago I was travelling to an overnight stop in Tewkesbury, on my way through to the Brecon Canal. Normally I stop in one of the excellent free car parks in Herefordshire towns, but decided to spend the evening by the river at Lower Lode C&C park Nr Tewkesbury. My Garmin tried v hard to drive me crazy through the tiniest lanes and ultimately tip me into the river!!😲😃
No cheese sandwiches again... David buddy you are letting me down!
Wouldn't it be fantastic to see that dredger at work 🙂
Loved this kind of cross-over of van and canals.
The boatiest camper video I’ve seen. But as an avid viewer of both your vlogs it’s all plain driving for me.
Love these trips in your campervan videos. I get to go to places without leaving home. Although wish I had actually been there for that coffee and chocolate cake.
This was super interesting.
Thanks for taking us along.
Hello from Altamonte springs Florida in the United States I really enjoyed your video I am a subscriber to your videos and I enjoy them I really enjoyed this one thank you
Awesome! Thank you!
Thanks David, always enjoy tagging along on you journeys big and small.
Glad you enjoyed it
Ahhh that’s better! Nothing like a David Johns vlog to calm you down after a hectic football match. Thanks David I needed that little oasis of calm and loveliness 👍🏻👍🏻
Thank you David for nice travel log. Always an enjoyable evening watching your vlogs. Have a good weekend and don't forget to shop before your next trip.
Very cool to see you in my neck of the woods David. 😊
I like it down there very much!
Such a beautiful country. Thank you for sharing.
Glad you enjoyed it
Enjoyed that. I live in Stroud and I would have cooked you a proper meal 😁
Glad you enjoyed it
A lovely trip filled with interesting history! Gracias🙏🏼👏👏
I enjoy the "virtual travel" around UK with David 😊
The continuing adventures in your van, thoroughly enjoyed that, I thought you might get your fishing rod out and catch a fish for your supper, all in all very interesting and and lots of information thanks 🌟 Nicola
Cheers, no I don’t fish
Your comment about Garmin back roads resonates for TomTom users as well; they have a habit of finding single track lanes even in counties with lots of better roads. A setting to avoid them would be a welcome bonus.
I google earth my trip before I set out.
Thank you for this great vlog. We live in Stroud and are members of the Cotswold Canal Trust. So good to see our local canal getting a mention and a future vlog! Great job as always 👍🏼
Hi David, love to see your travels. Have to thank you for visiting Hay on Wye. I am a bibliophile and would see Hay on Wye as heaven on earth. My husband worded up his nephew when he and his husband visited Wales. His nephew assured me that he did not see one bookshop there. You proved him wrong and it is now a new reason for hubby to be sent to the naughty corner, WITHOUT his phone so he can't play on Facebook. Lol. After 46 years of marriage, new reasons for the naughty corner are few and far between. Keep up the good work. Hoping you keep well and safe. Regards Diane
Hahaha oh no, what have I done?!!
@@Vandemonium just keep them coming. Lol
Glad you're back, love your videos.
And again a very entertaining and informative vlog. Thank you David. Stay healthy
Finally had time to watch. Always exceptional quality and good story telling. Love the restauration bits and the history. Boats, history, beautiful scenery 👍🏻✌🏻🇨🇦
We need more just love going along in the van. Thanks for sharing
Perfect replacement for DIY.. great little video.- got more for me money than I anticipated. What a lovely looking doughnut. I must go down to the ...sea again....with all the tall ships.
You were in my neck of the woods here. If I’m not mistaken, but that campsite is near Arlingham. There’s a great walk by the River Severn and a lovely pub called the Red Lion.
It is great to see more disused canals being restored.
Thank's David, very informative and enjoyable as always.
Many thanks!
Fancy that. Going for a trip without any provisions. Next it will be your trusty satnav to help you get around you'd have left behind. Still you could always use the old way and have a map put away in an empty cupboard that was meant for food stuff. Just in case. 🤣
My A/C is down as well. I really need to get it fixed, living in Arizona. Just know it will be many $$$'s. Great video. Time for a cheese sandwich.👍
Haha, I thought you had a massive mohican haircut in your opening segment. But it was the curtain. 🤟🏻
!!!!
Excellent video. Please keep them coming as you have time. May GOD bless and stay safe.
Hello David. I don't know why but I never saw the release of this video. I guess I need to ring the bell. I just did.
I enjoyed the tour, Thanks for sharing.
I have a similar problem with my Garmin, though to be fair, living in Devon most of our roads are windy country lanes so it's not entirely the satnavs fault. A pre prepared route plan makes trips much easier we have found as well as good old fashioned map book. The sat nav is mostly used to get us out of trouble when we take a wrong turn or navigate us around traffic jams which it does very well. When it does die though I won't buy another, phones are just as good these days.
Lovely to see you out and about again David. First with Michael, Jo, Lorna, and Wobbly boat crew. We have missed you and look forward to seeing you more often. 🇨🇦
Thanks for the video and tour, David. It is much appreciated. Jon
Pretty good getting to see some of the boat stuff from the land side
Absolutely love seeing the U.K. Countryside. So much history and simple like.
6:55 Bit of possibly very helpful advice, you really need not even own a dedicated satnav anymore. Using a combination of phone apps is FAR superior. Personally I use just two, an app called "Waze" and the google maps app. Waze does 98% of the work and then I'll use the google maps app for when signal is very (and I mean very) poor as the google maps app works with the most meagre drop of signal. Waze is especially fantastic because it has a feature for users to mark hazards such as bad traffic jams, broken down cars on the hard shoulder, crashes etc. Other users mark them then that information will be used to improve your journey, most of the time it will simply warn you of the hazard however if it's something that could cause real problems, like a long jam it'll re-route your journey to completely avoid it. If using apps really isn't something you're interested in however then something else a surprising amount of people don't know is that you can, and should, go to the manufacturers website and see if there are any updates for your particular satnav model. You can then plug the device into your computer and update it, these updates can come with a surprising amount of improvements and added features.
Haven't lost your dry humour! Good video. Love seeing the countryside.
Thanks 👍
Keep up the good work sir, great to see you out and about.
Thank you kindly
Nice, well done.
Thanks!
Very interesting! Thanks for the trip!
Aaaahhhh, luvvly. Like sitting with a coffee in a nice warm blanket 😊😊
Most enjoyable! Thanks! 👍
Great video!
Great video.
Thanks for an interesting and educational experience.
Wonderful as always
That was a interesting & enjoyable vlog David.........stay safe.........thanks for sharing
Great video, Thanks!
Loved this jaunt through your lovely country side...early bird ?? Hope that helped your water pressure..before the cows awoke..!!😀
Nice to hear from you..looking as good as always..take care awaiting more vlogs...for certain..
Hope you've gotten that AC sorted...thanx!!😊
Most informative even for one such as I who has lived here since the 1970s. Just one small thing. The village green at Frampton on Severn is not actually the biggest in England but the longest. Also noted for being where in Tudor times the fairest in the land resided. The fair Rosamund was reputed to have skin of such purity and whiteness that her blue veins were visible under it. Her bedroom in the Tudor Farmhouse is much the same now as it was then.
She sounds delightful
@@Vandemonium I believe in her day she was a rare beauty but times and standards change and now she sounds like the Zombie Queen 🤔😬
I wish MOT's were mandatory here in Alaska. It would certainly clear the roads of 'beaters with heaters' !
Enjoyed the vlog, see you next time
Very enjoyable video thank you old chap
Love your videos.. thank you very much xx
HEY DAVID, GREAT TO SEE YOU ONCE MORE. THIS WAS SORT OF A HYBRID VID, PART VANDEMONIUM AND PART CRUISING THE CUT. I LIKE THE MIX.
absolutely splendid day
I really really enjoy your vlogs. Both of them!
If you’re ever in the area again, have a look for the ‘hulks’ on the edge of the Severn near where you camped. Quite special in a sad sort of way. Also Gloucester cathedral is spectacular (as a cathedral and the cloisters featured in Harry Potter movies too!)
Lovely vlog David, thank you
Thanks 👍
Wonderful as usual. Thank you.
Thank you!
Very nice. Calming.
I always have a paper map aswell as my Garmin. Gives u a clue when to ignore it.
