42. New Zealand campervan holiday Part 3: north of the North Island

  • After a few days in a hotel in Auckland I picked up my tiny one-person campervan and headed north. I had watched lots of UA-cam videos about places to visit and drawn up a long list. This was going to involve lots of driving. In this episode I see a big tree, slide down some sand dunes, and take a ferry trip.
If you liked the video and wish to leave me a tip, thank you!

David our roads are quite quaint! Our land area is slightly larger than that of the UK which has 68 million living upon it, we have 5 million. So our road infrastructure is reflective of that. Makes exploring back roads fun!

In the future, open the window, hang your towel over the window and then roll the window up, keeps it from blowing away in a breeze

with the towel you pop end in the top of the window and wind up the window so it holds the towel for you 😊

You talk about difficult N Z roads. My wife and I spent 2 month end of last year in a vw camper van in the UK and drove 4000 miles. A lot of the roads there are absolutely diabolical. Parking horrible. Absolutely beautiful though but I was very happy to hand the van back and get in a train. Didnt even try and drive in France. They drive funny.

Bill great comment, however, you have never taken a bus trip down the Amalfi Coast in Italy have you. If you had, you would have never have forgotten the inching, creeping, stopping, inching some more, and finally able to move two feet before starting the process all over again. I would love to drive in both UK and NZ and with all of the trouble we had South of Naples, I still loved Italy. Fragrance of Memories. Sometimes it is those special difficult roads that make the best memories.

@@jerryodell1168 Sounds very much like the Chichester "bypass" in the holiday season, except that's the least characterful part of that road (the A27) to start with. Or getting past Arundel in any rush hour. But when it's not busy, I love the A27. I wonder how much it's changed in the 8 or 9 years since I last drove it. Traffic certainly increased over the previous 20 years.

Looks a great place to visit. That eccentric farmer looks like my kind of person. I love those strange exhibits on his grass and the smallest church. It's all very arty I suppose. It's the kind of exhibits that Billy Connolly would love too, LOL. 😁

Someone else suggested this same thought on how to a dry a wet item; lower a window down just enough to "catch" the item. It should dry. I really enjoyed my visit to New Zealand. Hope you get another chance to return.

Camping tip for next time you need to dry a towel over a car door (you’d be surprised how often that happens)... roll the window down and put it in, then roll the window up to hold it... that way the wind won’t blow it off

I kept getting warnings from people to look out for slupps on the road. I had no idea what they were talking about until I found a place where half the road was gone. The traffic controller explained that there had been a few slupps like this. Roughly translated land slide or slip.

When you went to Dargaville from SH1 you went though the town I grew up in, it is the first town on that road. I think in the early days the road workers were paid by the corner up that end of the country, lol. Went to the top on a bus and the driver said there were summer toilets there, summer for women and summer for men and have always remembered that from 40 years ago. Really enjoyed this video bro you went to places I have never been yet I have been in NZ all my 66 years. Keep safe up your way.

Glad you had fun while here. I tried sliding down the dunes a few years back, was fun. One of the guys somehow managed to go much further than the others and lightly hit the side of the bus. The rain here is quite something, we get a lot at times. Some say we get four seasons in a day.

We stood at the base of enormous Tane Mahuta on March 5, 2020, which we imagine preceded your visit by no more than a couple of weeks. Again, it was frustrating to have missed you by such a short amount of time, but so glad you experienced some of the same things we did. Wish we'd been able to make it all the way up to the lighthouse at the northern tip of the North Island, but we just didn't have time to go that far up, since we planned to spend most of our time on the South Island. For what it's worth, having seen many giant sequoias up close and personal, including the General Sherman tree in Sequoia National Park (which is the single largest living thing on planet Earth), we didn't expect much from the "Big Tree" but we sought it out anyway. We were duly impressed. That thing is indeed gigantic. We weren't the least bit disappointed!

I remember driving through a massive tree in California with a pal I did a road trip with back in 2003 ish; they'd cut a hole wide enough for the road in the trunk. Huge great thing it was.

Have you never been to John O’Groats or Lands End? Both these are where the Atlantic Ocean meets either the North Sea or the English Channel. Some times similar cross currents can be seen. Super entertaining video -- as always, David! Don't forget that it's THE North Island and THE South Island (always with the definite article). The exception being where I live in the rural South Island, where people say The Mainland (i.e. the South Island) and The Island (i.e. the other bit of NZ). Of course, you can also say the rather more melodious Te Ika-a-Māui and Te Waipounamu.

    • @laurencefraser
      @laurencefraser 4 роки тому

They only get the definite article in actual sentences and such though. It's not part of the names, just the "proper" way to use them. Likewise, we treat the North and South Islands as places rather than objects, so say things are "in the North Island" or "In the South Island", rather than on them, just as one would for the country as a whole (or the Kingdom, for that matter, if anyone ever talked about that...). The various smaller islands still get "on" though.

I suppose that Dune Surfing would be good for folks with a fear of heights-
Many watersides are ladders/stairs up a tower that puts one way up above the ground,
whereas this has one standing on the ground to start the slide/surf
