South Indian Comfort Food with Swagath Gourmet: Family Food

  • In the premiere episode of Family Food, we head to Swagath Gourmet, a South Indian restaurant run by the Iyengar family in Edison, New Jersey. We meet brothers Sesha and Murali as well as Murali's wife Padma, who all share a passion for bringing authentic South Indian food to the table. The lentil- and rice-based vegetarian dishes that have made Swagath a local favorite are not only delicious, but also extremely healthy.
After spending time with the Iyengars in their restaurant and their tight-knit community of Edison, we see it's no coincidence that the word "swagath" means "welcome" in their native tongue. The minute you walk into Swagath, you feel like a part of the family.

Indian food in general has to be one of the most underrated cuisines I have ever come across. I mean come on, you ask your friends what do you want to eat? No one will ever tell you Indian food, they'll say Mexican, or Italian, or whatever, but seriously, Indian is one of the best and most complex cuisines in the world, and it deserves so much more recognition.

Invite them for dinner. Being invited for dinner is a totally realistic thing you can aspire to, but be reasonable, don't expect something from nothing. Indian people are the most welcoming and thankful people on the planet. But they won't thank you with words, it's simply expected to return what is given to you. So if you want to be invited for dinner, ask them first!

This place seems to be one of those that Indians trust. I live in Tokyo, and my favourite restaurants here is extremely popular with Indians. The same goes for my favourite Thai place. I had a craving for tamarind rice last week and realized I’m out. The one thing I DO consume daily? My home made chai. 😁. When I first began visiting the Ganesh Temple in Flushing almost 20 years ago; I talked one of the cooks down in the canteen to teach me how to make some of the dishes they were serving. I became addicted to REAL chai very quickly and still make at least a gallon a day..😂. (Much more when my kids visit. In fact, my youngest loves my spice mix so much, she asks for a large jar for her birthday and uses it for many different recipes besides tea.

@@elaineg60 Yes you can freeze Idli, we buy half of our indian dishes frozen from the Indian store. They sell family pack idlis that we heat up in the microwave, just heat for 1 minute for 2 and 2 minutes for 4, cover with a wet paper towel. Its a easy breakfast on lazy mornings. Any of the curries freeze fine as well for us, id say use it within 2-3 months to avoid freezer burnt taste. I dont freeze rice since its so easy to make and best fresh, but from a lot of the prepackaged frozen indian food ive eaten the rice is half cooked. It finishes cooking when its heated up in the microwave and becomes soft.

A friend recommended this place and every time we are in NJ/NY area, we never miss going here. Love this place. I still remember, when our kid was all of 3 years and Mr. Sesha got him "bele obbaTTu", which we did not even ask for. He also had a bunch of those packed, without charging us. We believe he just wanted the little one to experience the dessert item. This courteous, generous, hospitality is rarely seen and visiting this place is a homely experience. Never miss their rasam/saaru that they provide as welcome drink. Overall a wonderful experience - food and service, every time.
