I respect everyone's food choices but I hate it when people say that vegetarians eat grass and it's boring to be a vegetarian, I don't know about other countries but if you are a vegetarian in India you will never even realize that you are missing out something as a foodie. This dosa looks just like the ones you will get in any good restaurant here in south India in Bengaluru, Chennai, Hyderabad. It is authentic and not altered to cater to local taste buds buds like a lot of Indian restaurants abroad tend to do.

Temple food is always super authentic, same in Paris. Im Mexican, my boyfriend is half-polish and we live in Paris, I asked him to take me to the most authentic pierogi in town and he took me to the polish temple in rue Saint Honore. If you ever want to try authentic polish food in Paris, go there.

Try going to Gurudwara (place od worship for Sikhs & even Hindus) some day near your home. Your will get good food (North Indian Veg only) all day, served to community there for free.
Couldn’t agree more. Definitely one of the best places to have authentic South Indian food (more like snacks) and the prices are cheaper compared to other restaurants. I’ve been going there since 2001 and the taste is always spot on...Highly recommend it..
What I loved is the fact that it's all Indian outside the nation border. The Tamilian man speaking Hindi is a bliss. I have recently started learning Tamil and its a beautiful language(although tough to learn) . Hats off to the guys at the temple..

Enjoying the masal dosai made by my grandmother as I see this video. Idlies and Dosas are really underrated. A typical breakfast includes a couple of steaming hot idlies and a crispy dosai along with one chutney and sambar and topping it with a hot cup of filter coffee! Just typing this makes my mouth water

I have heard about this canteen. People love it. The President of this Hindu Temple is the OB/GYN who delivered my two daughters in 1977 and 1980. She is a wonderful person. Many speak very favorably of this canteen.

@@waltercooper7199 Not really, the sambar can also be poured on rice and eaten as a meal. Just rip out big pieces dunk it in the sauce and eat. Some people don't like the sauces and eat it dry, some people literally marinate it in the sauces till it's soggy and then eat. You can also make rolls if you want, there is no traditional way of eating it, everyone does what they want.
It is apparent, and one should note that these two ladies are in this temple canteen because they leaned about it from NYT or some other medium - not that they knew about it or that they were foodies or that they had tasted south Indian food from various restaurants! That explains her rating of "5 on the scale of 1 to 10" for the crisp dosa which she didn't even know how to eat! Her another off the cuff stock comment - "a lot goes into a dosa" earlier on only throws the penultimate light on the shallow depth of her knowledge of south-Indian food and cooking. Regardless, I have been to this canteen (and temple too ;) and food there is just marvelous.

So misleading- the canteen/restaurant is NOT in the actual basement of the Bowne Street Hindu Temple itself. The canteen/restaurant is in a separate building NEXT to the temple. You exit the actual Temple and walk into another building, or enter that building from the curb side. The canteen/restaurant is NOT actually in the basement of the Temple, but you can probably say it is on "Temple grounds". The actual Temple basement is just an open space /"empty hall" ready to be used for a variety of other things. There is also a Dosa Hut restaurant above ground next to the Temple. Once Upon A Time, like in the 1980's , the stretch of Main Street right across from Patel's Grocery had at least 10 Indian shops with freshly made sweets, the latest Bollywood VCR rentals, fresh samosas, some Sari shops, etc. All has now been swallowed up by the Communist invasion of Queens, where they don't want your business if you can't read their language. On the opposite spectrum of Hindu Philosophy and Religion, it is probably ANYTHING GOES as to what may be listed on some of those other Asian menus.
I was in an Indian establishment and they saw me staring at their elephant and offered to remove it since they felt it offended me as a Christian. I simply asked, "Explain it to me." They did and I called all of us people of God. Same with the food. Simple pleasures and honest beliefs bring us all together.

It is apparent, and one should note that these two ladies are in this temple canteen because they leaned about it from NYT or some other medium - not that they knew about it or that they were foodies or that they had tasted south Indian food from various restaurants! That explains her rating of "5 on the scale of 1 to 10" for the crisp dosa which she didn't even know how to eat! Her another off the cuff stock comment - "a lot goes into a dosa" earlier on only throws the penultimate light on the shallow depth of her knowledge of south-Indian food and cooking. Regardless, I have been to this canteen (and temple too ;) and food there is just marvelous.

So misleading- the canteen/restaurant is NOT in the actual basement of the Bowne Street Hindu Temple itself. The canteen/restaurant is in a separate building NEXT to the temple. You exit the actual Temple and walk into another building, or enter that building from the curb side. The canteen/restaurant is NOT actually in the basement of the Temple, but you can probably say it is on "Temple grounds". The actual Temple basement is just an open space /"empty hall" ready to be used for a variety of other things. There is also a Dosa Hut restaurant above ground next to the Temple. Once Upon A Time, like in the 1980's , the stretch of Main Street right across from Patel's Grocery had at least 10 Indian shops with freshly made sweets, the latest Bollywood VCR rentals, fresh samosas, some Sari shops, etc. All has now been swallowed up by the Communist invasion of Queens, where they don't want your business if you can't read their language. On the opposite spectrum of Hindu Philosophy and Religion, it is probably ANYTHING GOES as to what may be listed on some of those other Asian menus.

Indian foods really gives an amazing texture in all of their delicacies. A must try food recipes.
I was in an Indian establishment and they saw me staring at their elephant and offered to remove it since they felt it offended me as a Christian. I simply asked, "Explain it to me." They did and I called all of us people of God. Same with the food. Simple pleasures and honest beliefs bring us all together.
