Waters and Gilmour worked well together as they both did what the other couldn't do. Waters is no musician but he is an amazing lyric writter and Inventer of musical concepts e.g who'd think of building a wall between the band and the audience where as Gilmour by his own admission struggles with lyric writting but is an amazing musician and to my ears has a slightly better singing voice but not by much.

I think once you become a real fan of Pink Floyd it becomes apparent that the real Floyd existed between 1969 and 1973. By Wish You Were Here they were already fragmented and Animals was brilliant but not representative of a true band. The Wall and Final Cut were Waters solo stuff in all but name as was AMLOR to Gilmour. Imagine they had stopped at Animals???? They’d be even more legendary than they are now.

    • @lapelcelery42
      @lapelcelery42 3 роки тому +3

@@Fcutdlady I'm totally with you on almost everything, except "Waters is no musician". He wrote a huge amount of the Floyd canon on his own, and played bass (though Gilmour played on a lot of the Wall, and a couple of other songs), and synthesiser on almost every track during the 70s, as well as electric and acoustic on a few more. He's certainly not a soloist, but his additions make a huge difference - a massive part of the raw sound of Animals comes from his electric rhythm guitar on Sheep and Pigs for example (particularly noticeable as it's not there on Dogs). He ay not be the virtuosic musician that Rick or Davis were in the band at the time, but few are, and his contributions are vastly undervalued in their shadow.

I have a strong suspicion that this song is a bit of an allegory of how he lost his second wife, engaging in wish fulfillment (a metaphor for one's mission in life) and suffering the consequences. This song doesn't really fit in with the overall concept of Amused to Death, but it's so good that it doesn't matter. Roger Waters is a true artist.

Back in the days when listening to a song also meant understanding the lyrics and what the writer was trying to say. I miss those days.
I have the CD, still remember about QSound, and I quote “To hear the QSoundTM effect you must be positioned centrally between the two speakers. If the dog barking at the beginning of the record doesn’t sound like he’s in the yard next door then your speakers are out of phase.”
By Gods grace, hopefully, I leave back the CD collection for my son to understand how meaningful music was in the last century.

Ah yes, blatant disregard for the fact Roger Waters was not the only member of the band. Remember, Waters tried to disband Pink Floyd because he thought he owned it, and literally got himself kicked out. I like Waters, but he wasn't the only genius in Pink Floyd. Gilmour, Wright, and Mason were top-tier musicians too, and also made for an incredible Pink Floyd sound. Roger Waters ended up taking demos from Pink Floyd as a whole from The Wall to make The Pros and Cons of Hitch-hiking, so even that isn't all his own. Neither side has the same Pink Floyd sound now as anything on The Final Cut or before. Both re-invented themselves because the Pink Floyd sound is distinctly Pink Floyd, and does not belong to any one man. It cannot be replicated by any one man.

    • @BlacksmithTWD
      @BlacksmithTWD Рік тому +1

@@baractusobamiuscaesar5540 Firstly, top tier musucian doesn't necessesarily equal genius. Secondly, in the previous comments only Gilmour is mentioned as musical genius, no claims about Waters being a musical genius, merely that he "owns the true Pink Floyd sound it’s in his blood". So regarding the 'musical genius' claim you are arguing a strawman fallacy. But I do agree that no single Pink Floyd member owns the true Pink Floyd sound as by definition 'the true Pink Floyd sound' is the whole of Pink Floyd being greater than the sum of it's members.
Perhaps the OP means that he likes Waters work more than the collective work of Pink Floyd, though if so, he should have formulated so more carefully.

Roger has always included the "sounds of life" in his music-eg. cars going by, birds singing, thunder, spoken words, feet walking on pavement etc which gives the music..... a..... third dimension if u like. It adds texture and immerses one deeper into the song-it also inspires mental imagery that mixes with the emotion he evokes so well. My fave artist of all time.

He really left us a legacy of what perfection can hear like. For too many people he (And Pink Floyd´s members of course) is a lighthouse in the middle of darkness. Just take a minute to read the first comment of this video (Is a sad proof of what he means to people who really do love and feel music through the skin and bones). By the way, today is Rog´s birthday, so raise that cup and make a toast to him. Cheers mate

Damian Palmisano yes, indeed! Roger Waters is far from being the best. Then I can be deaf. David Gilmour is the best, but he is not an egoist and a jerk (as Waters is). Gilmour is a humble good man and a brilliant musician. Waters’ musical skills are no match to Gilmour’s skills. Waters is a talented lyricist, but that’s all. Waters is overestimated.

A lot of people don't know this, and some do, but this album is loaded with subtext and background imagery that sets up the tones. In this song, on the album (not this edited version) there is a background confession of a woman (possibly from South Africa) who confesses to killing her children in a failed attempt of a family suicide which included herself. Due to extreme economic hardship.

    Reached back for the bottle
    And rubbed against the lamp
    Genie came out smiling
    Like some Eastern tramp
He said "Hey boy what's happening
    What is going on
    You can have three wishes
If you don't take too long
If you don't take too long"
    I said
"Well, I wish they all were happy in the Lebanon
Wish somebody'd help me write this song
I wish when I was young
My old man had not been gone"
    Genie said "Consider it done!"
    There's something in the air
And you don't know what it is
You see someone through the window
Who you've just learned to miss
And the road leads on to glory
But you used up your last wish
    Your last wish
And you want her to come home... home
    Bring her home...
    Genie said "I'm sorry
    That's the way it goes
    Where the hell l'lamp, suckah
It's time for me to go!
    Byehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!"
