I just wanted to clear up a couple things about this process. After watching your video, which is excellent BTW, I went through this on my 1992 135HP Black Max. I ended up completely removing the oil warning module and throwing it away. Also, many (Including a Mercury Marine service bulletin) suggest disconnecting the Idle Stabilizer module as a failure of this component can cause extreme advance of the timing at high RPM which will toast the motor. Its not difficult to do and may or may not require re-timing the motor. Also, pay careful attention to seating the O-ring on the black plastic block off cover and orient the flat part towards the motor crank. Mine really had only one way that it would go in with the bolt holes lined up properly. When mine was done my idle was a little high but adjustment of the idle speed per the service manual helped that out. Thanks again for this awesome video!
@@josephthompson638 IDK if it monitors engine temp. I have a gauge on the dash and I monitor that myself. You should refer to your Mercury service manual before following what I did. I am not sure what the wires you are describing are. Can you be a little more specific?
Cheers for the vid mate, now pull that idle stabilizer and do a retiming vid no decent ones on lube tube. Peace
XS POWER I whole-heartedly agree!!
As in delete the idle stabilizer too? My dad picked up a boat with one of these motors on it. I haven’t had much of a chance to check it out myself though. Good compression and I know oiler is already deleted though. Would like to help him get the most out of though since I like to tinker with outboards when I can.
@@wmkess yea mate. Bin it
I think you had the block off 180 that's why it didn't line up probably rubbing on the crank drive that meshed with the old pump shaft. There's a Lil taper
I appreciate your concern. The engine has been running perfectly for 2 years. Son
Yeah, nice job. Thanks for the video. I am still unclear on a couple of points. Looking at the service manual for my 92 Black Max 135 I see two wires ( a blue and a black) from the reserve oil tank and I guess you just left these disconnected with no alarm afterwards? And, the motion sensor module on top of the oil pump has 3 wires shown in my manual ( a black, a white and a blue-white) to tell the engine that the oil pump shaft is rotating. What did you do with these wires? Just left them disconnected also? Finally, there should have been a hose from the lower crankcase that provides pressure to the external main oil reservoir tank outside the motor. What did you do with that? Just cap it with a bolt and clamp? Just a few details that I'd like to have tied up before I start this job. Thanks for your help.
I disconnected all of that. And premix. I'm ole fashion. I like to know what going thru my engines. Son
Yet again an excellent video. AND timely as well. I just ended up with a 3 cylinder 80 to build. Want to first see what I have then ditch the oil injection. I also have a 90 inline 6, haven't figured what to do with it, needs an ignition I think. After market or fix the stock one...not sure. Acquired a later model inline sic with the later ignition, maybe see if I can blend the two...some many projects, so little time. One nice thing about being in the Finger Lakes...lots of old fresh water mercs to play with for cheap this time of year!
Thanks for putting up this video.
I have a '97, 175hp sportjet that is essentially the same engine. Deleted the oil pump.
Is just disconnecting the 3 wires on the sensor enough to kill the alarm? No need to place a jumper into any of the sensor connections?
I have no clue on this one but just disconnecting the sensor to accomplish that would be sweet...
The ones with the nylon gears were the ones posed the problem the steel ones not so much
Thanks for the vid! Subbed!
UA-cam is so weird. I'm seeing this as a "new" comment. Thanks for the sub! Son
When are you going to make a video explain how to remove the idle stabilizer?
This engine needs the stabilizer. L6s do not. Son
do you have a link for the block off kit? can you share what you did to modify the motor stand to hold an outboard? Thanks for taking the time to make these videos
www.ebay.com/itm/124311735267
You're welcome. Thank you for your support. The engine stand i just bolted the engine on with 4 heavy duty bolts. No modifications on this stand. Hope this helps. Son
@@MerCSonL6 thank you
Hello joe from fla. They dropped the ebay site for the block off kits mine is a 91, 75 hp and cannot find the block out kit any where
Can you help?
So do you have to do a block off kit? Or could you just not use your oil tank and premix ?
No need to premix if you have an oil tank/injection system in place. Son
Love the video . How would you use power tune on a efi 225 3.0 l non opti
Does it matter which way the flat side of the block goes ? I’d think the flat side goes towards the crank
Thanks for posting this video. My pops and I came across an 1988 mag2. It has been messed with previously to us getting it. The oil injecting is removed already. Also someone was using an electric fuel pump for this engine before. I've removed that crap and rebuilt the mechanical one that was on the motor.
Here's my question.... fuel comes in the bottom of that. Out is on the top. A vent outlet is in the center on the face. Where does that vent tube need to go or can it be blocked off?
Actually the pump that's on here, that i replaced the guts of, had the OUT blocked off and the vent has a 1/4 nipple on it. Any ideas why? Any help is mucho appreciated
What are you spraying into the throttle plates? And why? I’m pretty sure I have an idea, but I just want to be sure.
Mercury Engine Tuner. It contains petroleum distillates that absob and remove carbon. After 2 treatments the V6 compression is 120 psi across all 6 cyls. Son
@@MerCSonL6 would sea foam do the job also?
@@YtubeShush yes. Not quite as well but it definitely works. Son
What is the reason for removing the oil injection system. Why not let it run without oil in it and premix fuel
The gears for the oil pump get messed up if not blocked off properly.
Can I just simply put pre-mixed fuel (50:1) in the oil tank so that I do not have to go through all these?
No. Son
What's going on man, so I'm currently looking at a 20ft boat that has. 200 mercury oil injection motor. This will be my first boat, the dude informed me that the motor does not turn.. he claims it's seized. What process should i do to the motor to confirm this? Thanks love the vid
Simply turn the flywheel. If it's seized a costly rebuild is on the table my friend. The block will have to be torn down. 200hp is a heck of a starter boat. Son
@@MerCSonL6 thanks, would it be cheaper finding another motor?
@@spanishlavender7518 probably. I have one listed on ebay. It's a 175 though. If the engine is seized you likely may need a new crank, rod, bearings, pistons, rings etc. Not to mention all the gaskets and labor for the rebuild. Son
@@MerCSonL6 I'm a look for your shit on ebay, son
I have a 92 Mercury 135 I got next to nothing said it didn't run the gas to it and it runs my question is on the motor side where do you hook up for the tachometer I'm not familiar with this as I am the Tower of Power
I don't understand the question.
@@MerCSonL6 I found it the grey wire
But I believe the voltage regulator is bad because I had no signal to the tachometer
Why do away with the oil injection?? Is it a problem?? Me and my buddy both have early oil injection v6 motors. Is there a problem with certain years?
Its a preference. Also, an additional engine function that can fail. They rarely do but I like eliminating the probability. Son
Are mercury’s 2 different fuel line sizes? 3/8ths going to the engine 5/16ths from the pump?
I recommend 3/8 for the larger engines (150hp and above). Son
I just bought a 91 90hp 3 cylinder. Friend told me the oil motors fail pre mix is the way to go. I was looking for any answers to why they fail?
Its a preference really. I'm not a fan of oil injection. The connections that activate it usually have plastic tips. They crack (unknowingly) and your engine is toast. I've a lot of good things about it I just like the piece of mind knowing it's there. Piece of mind is priceless. Son
I’m not finding a complete block off kit online for my 1988 Mercury 150. Looks the same as what you have
www.ebay.com/itm/Mercury-135-to-225HP-2-0-2-4-2-5L-Block-Off-KIT-43453T-Remove-Oil-Injection-Pump-/304085468828?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&_trksid=p2349624.m2548.l6249&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0
Will this kit work on my 1988 80hp mercury ?
So its a 2stroke but you dont have to mix oil?? The oil is injected with gas automatic??
Mix the the oil with the best petro you can find. Ethanol free is great. Using 93 octane you need to put a stabilizer in it. I recommend startron. Son
What is the purpose of removing oil injection and switching to premix? Does it enhance performance?
Just a preference. Also, 1 less thing to fail. Fail rate is low but I prefer piece of mind. Son
Do you buy used parts? I have a working distributor, switch box and coil
Yes sir. Son
hey i would like an opinion i have a motor that i bought its a 1995 merc 150 black max efi and im just wondering if i should block off and switch to manual mix its running good but it feel to me to be not running fully and im worried that the oil injection might fail and as well the warring alarm dont work so im not sure
I would block it off. Piece of mind is priceless. Son
Hey i got a 1994 mariner oil injected. After i refilled my oil tank i took it out and it ran great no smoke. The last time i took it out just a couple weeks later the motor was smoking a lot. It sat all winter and it started right up this weekend. Still smokes a lot. Any reasons why? Thanks
Too much oil. Check your oil injection or disable it. I have a video on how. Son
What year and model is that motor? XR6 150?
1995. Based off the serial number it's a 175hp. Son
I have a '95 2.5 that I recently removed the oil injection, what can be done to stop the oil warning light and warning horn in control box
Remove the oil warning module..... or unplug it. It's on the port side of the engine. Son
@@MerCSonL6 Thnx!!
Please tell me what is the benefit of doing this.
Piece of mind. Which is priceless. One less mechanical thing to fail. Son
What are u mixing your fuel at? 32-1
50:1.
@@MerCSonL6 gotcha did a lil looking and found it
Don’t you have to disconnect some wiring for oil injection sensors.
Yes. Son
hi .. this engine have alarm
for overheat?
Correct. Son
@@MerCSonL6 why you disable oil injectors.. mix is better?
@@paranormal7529 its really a preference. But just one less thing to fail.
Do you mix 50:1 after deleting the oil injection system? Mine is deleted and I use 50:1 ratio mixture but it smokes a lot only at idle really. Any idea what is going on with mine? Should I change the mixture ratio?
Do not change the ratio. As long as it's white smoke you're good. Son
@@MerCSonL6 ok cool. Thank you
Is it the same process for a efi?
Not sure my friend. Efi sprays fuel directly. Not sure if the oil is premixed. Son
Is there a block off kit for a 1993 mercury 75hp outboard
I'm sure. Son
hey mercson im still having issues with my 71 1350. i have replaced the distributor, rotor, cap, and wires I have also tested the box and it is working like its supposed to. I'm still not getting spark to the plugs. is the coil the next thing to replace? the coil i can find online doesn't look like the one that is on my motor. does it matter if I use the newer type on my motor?
It does matter. A 1350 will need an early 1970s coil. The resistance differs from the newer coils. You need a blue coil. Hope this helps. Son
Use a test light to make sure your getting power to your switch box when you turn the key. I had the same issue and my wire was broke in my harness somewhere.

Which motors are L6 motors?
All motors where the cylinders are stacked vertically. Inline 6 vs V6 which are staggered. Son
I have a question if anyone cares to answer. So I have an 88 mariner magnum II 150 and want to delete my oil injection since my motor is low hours and those old nylon gears are prone to failing. I already have a good 50:1 mix pimed, ane ran on the muffs to get it into the carbs and ready to go but just to be clear, once I pull the pump and install the block off kit I can just run a straight fuel line with an inline filter from the back of my quick connection straight into the fuel pump, then remove the oil tank, oil motion sensor, and the oil warning module, then pull the crankcase pulse pressure hose and just cap that nipple or plug it and I'm good to go? Will disconnecting the oil warning module cause my overheat alarm not to work or are they on separate modules? Any input would be greatly appreciated
Yup. It will not work once disconnected. But pre mixing is piece of mind.... which is priceless. Son
@@MerCSonL6 I did the oil delete a couple days ago and it was easy as can be. Haven't been able to take it out yet but ran on the muffs no problem. Thanks for the video. Was a big help
what was the mix ratio

Did you unhook/remove rotation sensor and module?
Just unscrew the bolts/screws. Son
Questions I have force 120p there milky color in cylinder number2 and I replaced head gaskets, but there still milky color and I removed the exhaust cover I see milky color do you think is the bad exhaust gasket?
Did you face the head? Always good practice to replace exhaust gasket when doing head
