Last time we tried to answer this: how much of a ride can you squeeze from a 500W Mid-drive Bafang kit.
Now that we got an answer, how about doing the same test, but this time throttle only instead?
Let me add more info about this "base" scenario:
- 36V 15.6Ah battery,
- flat, mixed path,
- 1000 km of consumed tyres, well pressured,
- irrelevant wind
- driving non-stop, averaging 25 km/h ("zen" mode 😁)
- 109Kg = 85.2Kg of "me" + 23.8Kg of "ebike" (battery and motor included)
How much battery will be left after 10.7 km?

[IT] Il limite massimo di potenza nominale per le bici elettriche in Italia è di 250W. Anche limitando la velocità a 25Km/h, una bicicletta che sviluppi una potenza nominale maggiore di 250W (anche 500W) non si può usare sulle strade pubbliche Italiane. Chi lo fa si assume la responsabilità delle proprie azioni (e contravvenzioni).
Questo video è da intendersi a solo scopo dimostrativo e NON è da intendersi come esempio da imitare. Poichè è destinato ad un audience più ampio che l'Europa, è stato scelto un 500W come esempio per mostrare le capacità del motore.

Même si la vitesse est limitée à 25 km/h, un vélo qui développe une puissance nominale supérieure à 250W (même 500W) ne peut pas être utilisé sur la voie publique français. Ceux qui le font s'assument la responsabilité de leurs actions (et amendes).
Cette vidéo est finalisé uniquement à la démonstration et n'est PAS à un exemple à imiter. Comme il est destiné à un public plus large que l'Europe, un 500W a été choisi comme exemple pour montrer les capacités du moteur.

I have a 750w bafang with a 17.5 ah battery and got about 12 miles.
The bike weighs about 21kg with the motor and battery and I'm about 80kg.
When I used it on level 2 of 9 I keeps me nicely at around 15mph and 20 miles used about a third of the battery waiting for better weather to do a full range test but happy with how it performs so far.

Run the test with 20 kg extra weight and see. If it's not bad, that means you can carry with you extra 20 kg of hot swap batteries.
Great video how does the bafaang mid motor behave on throttle only is it responsive or how do you find it.

Assolutamente si! È sufficiente non collegarlo e l'assistenza funzionerà come sempre (in realtà l'acceleratore non lo uso praticamente mai, basta alzare al massimo il livello di assistenza e "pedalare") 👍
Good informative video,I have a 250W 36v UK legal Bafang motor with a 16Ah battery. Throttles are not allowed in the uk, unless pre 2015, My conversion is on a 1990 Specialised rockhopper, which the UK licensing authority tell me is fine to fit a throttle as the bike is pre-2015, My problem is that certainly on the higher assist levels, the motor draws about 350W, I'm worried about burning out the control panel in the motor, Would fitting a control board for a 500W motor work on the 250W version?

Actually you should not have to worry too much about your peak watt consumption. Bafang's motor and controller are designed to handle up to double the current they are rated for!
My 500W motor sucks up to 750W sometimes on very steep climbs and with maximum assistance, but it's just a peak consumption 😊
Just don't overvolt it and you should be good to go!
@@LukeLorusso Thanks Luke, looked up the 250W control panel, think its rated at 36V 15A which would be 540W Great little motors, would love to play around with the bigger ones, Looked on the Bafang website, and they no longer seem to list that style of motor, all the new ones fit directly to the purpose built frame, like the Bosch and Shimano motors do. Can't believe that they don't do them any more when there are tens of millions of old bikes out there ripe for conversion!
@@petejones1957 they do, it's just that they recently reviewed their line up, also raising the prices.
Bafang also makes motors fitting in the proprietary frame, like the M620, but still makes general frame motors, like the M315.
Thankfully on marketplaces you can still find the old good ones
How do you know how much battery you have left.. I have chosen to have % instead off current on my display.
When biking the % decrease and when bike is stopped the battery % increase. So how can I know exactly how much battery I have left for my trip
You're right: either you chose to show the percentage or the voltage, during stress periods (so when you use the motor) the display has difficulties showing the right charge level.
It seems to behave like the gasoline tank gauge...
Well if you stop the bike and wait for a few seconds you'll see the actual charge level.
You could eventually measure your battery directly with a voltmeter. There also exist some that you can mount on your handlebar.
For 36V batteries: 42V is fully charged, 34V is 20% (you should avoid discharge over that), 32V is "dangerously low battery"

i do more than 50 km at very high speed: (top 9 PAS), i get 74 to 78 km/h max speed.
Do 46km in 1:05hr,

Sto valutando la sostituzione del mio vecchio scooter 125 che uso solo per andare al lavoro con un ebike. Parlo di una distanza di 8km all andata e 8 al ritorno. Tu consigli di convertire in ebike la mia MTB front della CUBE? cerchi da 29, ci potrei installare tranquillamente pneomatici "stradali" e portapacchi.
É una bellissima bicicletta! Allora, non avresti le prestazioni del 125 che chiaramente ti puó portare in tangenziale e strade statali, però verosimilmente (e questo vorrei farlo notare a tutti coloro che guidano auto e motoveicoli): in città, la velocità media che si raggiunge NON é superiore a 30, 35 km/h. Tra semafori, auto in doppia fila, autobus, camion della nettezza urbana ecc... non si raggiunge MAI la media di 50km/h. Ció si traduce in gas sprecato, freni consumati e una valanga di stress sullo stomaco!
In bici elettrica, al semaforo successivo, ritrovi le stesse auto che si erano fatte la gara al semaforo prima 😄 consumi corrente elettrica super economica, non c'é necessità di superare i 25-30km/h e se ci sono anche delle piste ciclabili allora decisamente si, te lo consiglio!
Per la pioggia e le intemperie puoi usare lo stesso abbigliamento dello scooter, incluso casco e guanti.
Lo scooter puoi tenerlo per le gite in bella stagione, magari facendo un'assicurazione stagionale 😉
@@LukeLorusso grazie x i consigli, la mia intenzione è proprio di eliminare lo scooter perché appunto lo utilizzo solo x questo tragitto casa/lavoro in città. Per le gite ho già due moto e una bici mi farebbe risparmiare di polizza e bollo😁 come dici tu ho ragionato molto anch'io sul fatto della velocità media, qualche volta vado già al lavoro in bici, ma lavorando in ufficio a volte arrivo sudato e non ho la possibilità di cambiarmi. Pensavo appunto ad un e-bike anche x questo.
@@simonemager9045 Allora, se prendi un Tongsheng e ti piace pedalare, arriverai sudato lo stesso 🤣 (ma tipo nella metà del tempo) perché essendo la forza applicata proporzionale a quella erogata dalle tue gambe, e vedendo che puoi arrivare a 35km/h (col 500W, di meno con un 250W), uno si gasa e inizia a pedalare come il matto (almeno per me é così). Col Bafang puoi eliminare il sudore, perché ha il rilevamento a cadenza, quindi anche se fai finta di pedalare il motore copre lo sforzo che non farai tu. La velocità massima sarà anche superiore 👌🏻

Hey man, I also am now in a place with a lot of uphills and even if it's not legal I am thinking about a 48 v750w motor. In your case I would pair the maximum Ah battery money could buy (like 21Ah).

I imagine that the lower W would translate into more efficiency, but many other factors should be considered (to name one, mid-drive motors can rely on gears, hubs don't)

no! a motori da 36v si accoppiano batterie da 36v, lo stesso vale per 48, 52 ecc...
Se desideri installare batterie da 48v devi procurarti un motore da 48v (esistono motori Bafang da 500W a 48v)
Se hai una batteria da 36v assicurati di acquistare un motore da 36v

mh no, non mi occupo di assistenza 😅 ma non mi preoccuperei troppo: l'acceleratore è un componente economico e semplice da reperire. Puoi sempre ordinarne uno nuovo

@@LukeLorusso muchas gracias por responder amigo. El problema que yo tengo es que sólo me cabe ese tipo de batería en el chasis de la bicicleta porque es doble suspensión. Llevo mucho tiempo dándole vueltas en mi cabeza..

Can you pedal in throttle mode,? With that I mean is it possible to use the bike as a normal bike if u just like to peddle and with that asked will there be any resistance from the motor and feel just the same as not having a motor?

Pedal in throttle mode? Hmmm throttle mode is additive to PAS so you can pedal without any help as regular bike but there is some restriction.

@@LukeLorusso 25 kph is fairly economical on battery. I wonder what range my 48V 17.5Ah battery would get at that speed. Probably 125 km on the flat if I could be bothered (assuming 170 watts to do that speed). In practice I could easily light pedal along and substantially increase range even beyond that. I tend to get 40 miles out of a battery on mixed terrain at 25 mph pedal assist.
@@TimpBizkit 25 kmh is avarage, sometimes more, sometime less, representing most likely a real scenario.
Having a more powerful motor and a bigger battery (in your case +45%), even if resulting in more range, doesn’t necessarily translate in the exact same increase in range (will be less than 45%), even at the same speed.

I only need pedal assist of 2 or 3 and I can go 10 miles easy on a 10ah battery and don't even drop any bars.

@@LukeLorusso Lo immaginavo. Ho un problema mi; si smangia il copertone posteriore velocissimo. Stavo vedendo i copertoni della SCHWALBE approvati fino a 50 km/h, sono buoni secondo te? ci sono molti modelli; io ho visto: Schwalbe Marathon E-Plus e Schwalbe Energizer Plus. Ho le ruote 27,5 su mtb.

Non sono un esperto di pneumatici, ho montato sulla mia bici bafang delle michelin protek max e penso che tra altri 1000 km faró l'inversione come per la macchinina 😅
@@LukeLorusso Ciao, Ho ordinato un paio di Schwalbe Energizer Plus 27,5x2.00, per velocizzare la mtb. Sarebbe poco prudente montare gomme da corsa su ebike così potenti, poi se prendi una buca.... Comunque i copertoni della decathlon sì consumano subito sulle ebike.
Certo il mio bbs02 da 750w spinge bene, figuriamoci il bbshd mi immagino che bestia assurda :)))
Can you use throttle without the chain moving. In other word the pedals are still and not moving.
when using the throttle, the chain has to move to make the bike move, but the pedals do not

Ive got bafang bbs02 48V 500W and i can do about 40km throttle only going about 40kmh where possible. Battery is 15Ah 720Wh. Ps. Motor seems not liking it. Started some noise just after 200km but it reveals it self only after 30min of such drive...
