My history lies with restoring old cars and campervans. When I was recently diagnosed with epilepsy from the presence of an AVM which had caused a brain hemorrhage, I was devasted not only to lose my hobby but my independence. Your videos have been like a lightening-bolt of inspiration, and couldn't have come at a better time fir me. I'm been binge-watching and mulling over all of the opportunities that have always been there, but that I have never considered. This feels like the first thing I've looked forward to trying, in a LONG time. Thank you for the inspiration!
Just want to say thank you for your contribution in my life. Your videos gave me inspiration to rebuild bicycles during this time. I used to ride a lot when I was younger but had a big crash that gave me fears. The pandemic changed that and your videos taught me how to fire up that passion again. I now have three bikes and looking to rebuild a fourth!
That intro speaks to me so much. I was laid off because of covid, and suddenly found myself with a lot of free time. I was able to get back into my old hobbies, got back into mountain biking, and in turn, found your wonderful channel.
This is by far one of your best. That paint job is 4-dimensional chess and everything from the blue rivets on the 1x to the pedals to the textured seat ... just a great watch. Thank you.
I served a church mission in Santa Rosa California from 1996 to 1998. My mission bike was a Gary Fisher Big Sur. This video brought me back to some great memories. Thanks for the upload.
I recently bought a 1999 Gary Fisher bike. I paid $100.00 for this sight unseen and I thought it was going to be a simple grease the chain and ride solution. It is not and this video, in addition to researching Gary Fishers history as well as the Marin County bicycle museum offerings for visiting and volunteering are directing my focus more narrowly than in a long time. I feel a little apprehensive about a total reset on this bike as I know nothing about fixing a bike, but this was the most soothing video I have watched in such a long time. I love all the sounds and your voice as well as your encouragement to slow down and go back to old ways. I have no idea where to buy tools, where I am going to work on this but this video gives me strength and hope. Thank you. I will keep watching.
I build bikes all of the time,, everyday,, I love the channel. I'm 49 years old and my first bike build when I was 4 years old on Christmas 🎄,, I'll never forget my schwinn build.
surprising, I loved how it turned out, you left it with that old school touch but with new components, you really have talent, not only in restoration, but how you edit your videos, congratulations.
I have this type of Big Sur hung on to it,had it in since my twenties now in my fifties and now I’m giving it new life inspired by your build and words.
I just brought my own Gary Fischer Big Sur in for a tune up so I can ride more with my friends and son. I switched to running and skiing years ago, but your video has inspired me to start replacing some of my parts to update the bike. It's still a great frame after all these years, and my first MTB, so it will always have a place with me.
Every one of these is therapy, to be honest. So is working on my own bike. Both remind me of working on cars with dad when I was a kid, when the world was much more simpler. Thank you.
Watching your builds are awesome and for me it is relaxing. I just recently found a fixie bike that I’m going to attempt a build and give it a new life. Thank you for your amazing videos it’s been an inspirational experience. Thank you again from California much love 🤙
Great build but even better advice. I refurbished old Ping putters by copper plating them. Your video of your axe inspired me. Everything I learned, I learned from you! Everyone that bought a putter, probably 10 putters in all, really like the copper plating. I love your channel, I’ve learned so much from you over the past year! Cheers! Keep being awesome!
I wish I could do this for a living. Man I love painting bikes. First one was a BMX In probably 93 I found abandoned in the neighborhood. Stripped it down to a frame and painted it florescent yellow, with black splatters on top. Looked so sweet that it got stolen less than a month later!
I decided to pull an old mountain bike out of my mom's shed that has been there for 20 years and refurbish it. First time ever doing something like this but it's very relaxing and therapeutic to me. And a great learning experience
I honestly think, even if you made a 24hr video, I'd watch it all without a break. I'm currently resto-modding a 1995 Marin Pine Mountain (my first serious bike when I was younger) and just deciding on what Spray.Bike paint to go for whilst I'm sanding off the original paint and minor surface rust. Probably brass gold to make the mirror polished original metal parts pop, like the White Industries crankset. So inspiring, you made me start this project, thank you :)
Your introduction brought a tear to my eye, the pandemic was awful however it was a time for me to slow down. I stopped riding mountain bikes 6 years ago, the lockdowns helped me dust off my 2013 GT Karakoram I ordered a whole heap of parts online and began working on my bike. I made excuses all these years not to ride like being a Dad, Husband, student , work & many more reasons. I’m now riding 3 times a week before work I’m enjoying every single moment now.
I actually ride one as well. It's a 1991 seeker mega. A dad bike in the truest sense of the word. Its pretty beat to shit from all the trail riding he did BITD but it's still chugging along both in and out of storage. The pandemic also necessitated fixing it to be rideable again. For now I'm just trying to make it nicer to ride bit by bit, I don't really have the money to strip it down and repaint it. Besides, the rust-coated frame lulls me into thinking it helps deter most bike thiefs lmao
Thanks for another video. You've inspired me to fix a few squeaks on my 20 year old MTB. My bottom bracket removal video alone was flagged for excessive foul language and a gaping open wound. Keep your comments positive y'all!
I look forward to each of your rebuilds and they get better and better. You've inspired me and I have rebuilt a couple of old 26'ers myself. It is such a great experience. Thank you.
Great work here. Scratch that. Some of your best paint work yet! I've spent some time recently rebuilding a small fleet of 26-ers for friends and am now sorting one of my old rides out thanks to finding these videos-Thanks!
You’re awesome. I love you too :) Thanks for being kind, for being quiet, for taking time and care. You are what the world is needing right now, and you are inspiring thousands of people to find this in themselves - which means we will also be more able to share it with others. ❤️ Also - I love your work, but that (almost) goes without saying.
The struggles we all have gone through this year. Man. I am working on my new to me 1992 Trek 2300 and it will reside next to my 1988 Trek 400 that I have had since new. Back to the old ways. Ride more. Gain back some youth lost in the grind. Finally living in Japan once more. Helped a friend with his 1972 Mazda Porter. Old stuff is cool.
Oh man. Now I want to take my 91 Procalber apart and clean everything. Bought it new and I can't bear to part with her. Love the paint job! Thank you for the zen.
I love watching you bring new life to old bikes. I have 2 old GT bikes I bought new in 91 and 92. I have an Outpost and a Talera. Would've to convert them to a 1 x drive train. Your paint jobs are fantastic. Thanks for sharing!!
Really nice rebuild! I've always wanted a Gary Fischer but, locally they were hard to come by. I bought a Klein and have had it for 30 years, still love it.
The most perfect video to stumble upon on this wonderful January 1st, 2021. Just before this, I was putting together a parts list for updating a Trek 820 Mountain Track. Fat knobbies and a modern cockpit look SOOO good on a 90's MTB frame.
Painting question from my 12yr old. He’s painted the bike (1967 Schwinn Breeze) with Spray.bike and now wants to put Schwinn stickers on the paint. His question; “do I clear coat first then add the stickers or clear coat over the sticker too”? This is his project and is learning a ton. He bought the bike for $40, tore it down, prepped and painted and almost ready to reassemble (all himself). Thank you for your videos - they are fantastic!
Awesome awesome awesomeness. With regards to the stickers it can depend on the stickers if they are are made to g work with a clear coat over them. Some will bleed a bit from the clear coat. The safest and easiest to fix is to do the clear coat then place the stickers over the clear. Thanks for sharing about you 12yr old’s project.
Just rebuilt 2 identical scott spark jr bikes a 20 amd 24 inch. You were an inspiration for those builds. With my own flare to them. Very fun build and challenging and had to have patience trying to find the right parts for the build. The builds will be highlighted soon!
It was wonderful, Rob! Your paintings are absolutely beautiful! Watching you work on your creations is inspiring and very rewarding! You are the man! Tchau!
Love the Videos. Me and my dad started rebuilding a Marin Pine Mountain a year ago now. It's his old mountain bike and I eventually mine. We got an older Gary Fisher race bike as a donor bike for new parts and put a solid fork on it. It's coming along pretty quick now but your channel has been great Inspiration!
Watched this video with the sound off and my ipod on. From some of the comments, that was fortuitous. Great to see an old bike given a new life. And a very easy to identify paint scheme if it's ever swiped. Here's to hoping that it gets ridden, a lot.
I know why I love your videos. I love bikes, but that’s not just about bikes, it’s a way of being in the world we live in. That slowdown fits perfectly in giving those things a new life. Thanks 😁
Wow. Thank You. I started wrenching on a couple of bikes last year but this past summer I've been working one everyday... I didn't even realize that I may "resetting". You do excellent work. I have tool envy.
Thanks again for another fantastic video. Truly 30 minutes of enjoyment. I just finished a 1999 Cannondale F700. I know what you mean by returning back. Cheers
I’m excited to find this video I just got a Gary fisher Big Sur that hasn’t been used in a very long time I’m wanting to restore it and then start riding bike again so it’s great to find your video.
Wonderful video. You did a fantastic job in rebuilding that bike. It is like you were "in the zone" all the time. Congratulations and cheers from Philly
I have a old gary fisher marlin genesis i building from the ground up like these one. U inspire me to do the same and within money lol. Thank u for the video u said it perfectly. And that bike. WOW gorgeous. I hope to be as good as u one day. Bikes to me is a art and passion
Gorgeous one, well played, Sir. I rescued a very well "loved" 97' Big Sur Acid Yellow small frame Genesis geo, from a bike co-op maybe 8 months ago. It quickly became my favorite Mini Mullet, 26x27.5 (2.8) with a Niner fork. It rides so good that I figured I would take it bike packing. Last month it shined on the Black Canyon Trail, AZ and an early season Kokopelli solo trip, really loaded down, cold weather, no food or water caches along the way, heavy. I fully otb cartwheeled it out on Mars one day being reckless, as you do. While in the air, before finishing my flip and hitting the ground, I was thinking it was game over for the bike. As I walked back up to it, I was trying to compute exactly how far I'd be hiking out, 34 miles? After thorough nervous examination, no worries. I've broken burlier bikes with less impact than that, it's bomb-proof. Those beautiful welds have gone through two "destructive testing facilities" very admirably. "Man's best friend", as it famously says right on it. And for me at least, so far it's a frame you can trust implicitly. I've a number of great old and newish bikes and this little thing just rips in heinous terrain on par with or better than the rest, titanium included. These are brilliant frames, no doubt. I found it rides so well that I went and grabbed another frame, an immaculate (98/99'?) XS Big Sur frame hanging in the same co-op. This one was built it up for my friends' son who had outgrown his kids bike, a tiny 42lb. anchor with 3 bad gears and no effective braking. It's a beautiful 26er he can ride now and shred Colorado for a long time, upgrade the front end when the time comes. Gary really hit the nail on the head with these bikes. Even for his legendary designs, these came together perfectly in a special way. It's really good to see the absolute love of these "old" bikes shine through the decades. Thank you, we love yer werk. They are indeed, priceless. Cheers, gone Fishin'.
Absolutely beautiful bike. I followed you for a while but this one made me hit the subscribe button. I do remember the old days and fixing up my Rhino III BMX bike. It was a joy and I now I work on a 2010 Diamondback Response Sport .. Old bike by today's technology but I still love working on it.
Autumn is comming fast but this year it doesn't bother me much. I have so many inspiration after your movies that I just can't wait for those short days. Spending them in my workshop will be a great pleasure. Thank you so much for your work and wish you the best. Peace
In this time I recently gave new life to a 2000 Gary Fisher Hoo Koo E Koo that I've had for 20 years. It has been really great to make it run again. Nice video
Hey Blair. Did u restore the original drivetrain? Any components you replaced, kindly let us know how they worked out. Be safe. Old Shovel is a national treasure.
I really enjoy you videos. You’ve inspired me to get an old Mtb and rebuilt it like you do it in your videos. It is so much fun. Thanks for the great videos and keep on making them rebuild videos! Greetings from Germany
Thank you. I've watched many of your videos before, but this one had something beautiful about it. Truly inspiring, in more than one way. Again, thank you.
Another wonderful rebuilt and story. Thank you Oldshovel for your work and philosophy! Sometimes it's good to go the "old way", I do that all the time, at least when possible, doing things with my own hands... and the COVID episode invites us all to to it even more. Time to reset, to re-think our priorities and our way of life, and more important: time to think about what is really essential for us? Um abraço do Brasil! Regards!
I recently got a 2000 Gary fisher sugar 3 for free on Facebook marketplace. It was converted to a single speed, and had many parts, such as the derailleur, pedals, shifter, and for some reason the chain, taken off of it, so I had to go get $175 worth of parts to get it back up and running. I’m currently loving it. It performs amazingly and for $175 has been a great second bike for me.
My history lies with restoring old cars and campervans. Matt, thank you for sharing your story. Comments and stories inspire me also and lift me up. Thanks for sharing.
It's great to watch the build but your relaxing, welcoming voice telling me a story keeps me coming back. Great job!
Thanks
Just want to say thank you for your contribution in my life. Your videos gave me inspiration to rebuild bicycles during this time. Awesome
Your not only a good bike mechanic, you are a philosopher too, this mix makes you stand out from the rest of videos about bikes, nice.
Thanks
That intro speaks to me so much. I was laid off because of covid, and suddenly found myself with a lot of free time. I was able to get back into my old hobbies, got back into mountain biking, and in turn, found your wonderful channel.
This is by far one of your best. That paint job is 4-dimensional chess and everything from the blue rivets on the 1x to the pedals to the textured seat ... just a great watch. Thank you.
I noticed the multidimensional aspect as well. What kind of paint is used for this type of reset?
I served a church mission in Santa Rosa California from 1996 to 1998. My mission bike was a Gary Fisher Big Sur. This video brought me back to some great memories. Thanks for the upload.
This was actually a friend’s old mission bike from that era.
I recently bought a 1999 Gary Fisher bike. I paid $100.00 for this sight unseen and I thought it was going to be a simple grease the chain and ride solution. I have this type of Big Sur hung on to it,had it in since my twenties now in my fifties and now I’m giving it new life inspired by your build and words.
Oh my, the knife scraping the paint was an unenjoyable sound. Thank you for keeping that segment short!
Lol 😂 I knew I would get a few comments on that.
LOL, glad I'm not the only one. :D
That woke me up and I skipped to the end.
Not only gorgeous. I’m blown away by how
beautiful that frame is!
I am a cameraman and your chanel my favorite. I have learned the basic Repairing of the bikes. Thank you very much!
I been doing the same , getting more into rebuilding bikes, bmx and mountain bikes, it's great therapy I must admit , I love it
Found your channel during this pandemic and it gave me inspiration. I'm obsessed with restoring 90's MTBs now. 🙏 Thanks.
As always, I came here to see a restoration, that becomes a lovely story. Thanks for that. Big hug.
Thanks my friend

Nice job as usual. I'll always have a soft spot for 90's hardtail mountain bikes.

I don't even ride bikes, I just love watching him work.
Your introduction brought a tear to my eye, the pandemic was awful however it was a time for me to slow down. I made excuses all these years not to ride like being a Dad, Husband, student , work & many more reasons. I’m now riding 3 times a week before work I’m enjoying every single moment now.
You got me into older MTB's. Gonna pick up a Muddy Fox this week and devote some time to restoring it. Thanks for showing older bikes can be cool!
I actually ride one as well. It's a 1991 seeker mega. A dad bike in the truest sense of the word. @@possibly8180 Yeah! Sounds great, who cares about the rusty frame, enjoy it!
Thanks for another video. You've inspired me to fix a few squeaks on my 20 year old MTB. My bottom bracket removal video alone was flagged for excessive foul language and a gaping open wound. Keep your comments positive y'all!
These videos are so good for us. Thank you for sharing your builds and stories with us. It is very much appreciated.
I look forward to each of your rebuilds and they get better and better. You've inspired me and I have rebuilt a couple of old 26'ers myself. It is such a great experience. Thank you.
Awesome thanks
I've got this bike in my garage. Bought my 1998 Gary Fisher Big Sur new. Been riding it for 20 years. Love it.
I love this! Very creative use of those decals and paint. What a captivating video. Well done.
I enjoy so much your video man, I though I was the only one in the planet that finds joy by cleaning rust and old grease.. love you work brother!
Great work here. Scratch that. Some of your best paint work yet! I've spent some time recently rebuilding a small fleet of 26-ers for friends and am now sorting one of my old rides out thanks to finding these videos-Thanks!
I loved the sound of the stickers being peeled off and revealing the first cost of paint. Wow.
I LOVE how the white outlined lettering turned out! Very cool build. I'll have to check out that 8 speed drivetrain. 👍
Satisfying to see your work
I just started watching your channel and it’s been therapeutic for me. Thank you.
Your attention to detail is remarkable. Outstanding build, old shovel!
As calming and peaceful as a circle ceremony. Thank you!
You’re awesome. I love you too :) Thanks for being kind, for being quiet, for taking time and care. My morning coffee and a new video from Old Shovel.... great way to start the day. Keep up the great work !
Really nice rebuild! I've always wanted a Gary Fischer but, locally they were hard to come by. I bought a Klein and have had it for 30 years, still love it.

Love the Videos. Me and my dad started rebuilding a Marin Pine Mountain a year ago now. It's his old mountain bike and I eventually mine. Hi Im from Philippines i always watch your restoration of bike and it makes me so calm and really like your story telling I wish I have my own bike
Watched this video with the sound off and my ipod on. From some of the comments, that was fortuitous. Great to see an old bike given a new life. And a very easy to identify paint scheme if it's ever swiped. Here's to hoping that it gets ridden, a lot.
Amazing job! The bike looks absolutely great. “I love doing the paint...” we noticed!
Oldshovel your one seriously cool restoration dude, FULLEST RESPECT !.
I know why I love your videos. I love bikes, but that’s not just about bikes, it’s a way of being in the world we live in. That slowdown fits perfectly in giving those things a new life. Thanks 😁
Thanks
Hello Oldshovel! I'm watching your videos for a long time, and I can tell you that yours video pushed me to renovate my old 90's bike.
Wow.
Cheers
Probably my favorite paint job of yours so far!
Thanks
Your way of painting really inspired me.. thank you
Philosophy and remembering those old ways. This was dreamlike and most definitely felt the love
Awesome
I’m excited to find this video I just got a Gary fisher Big Sur that hasn’t been used in a very long time I’m wanting to restore it and then start riding bike again so it’s great to find your video.
So inspirational. You are truly salt and light.
Wonderful video. You did a fantastic job in rebuilding that bike. It is like you were "in the zone" all the time.
Congratulations and cheers from Philly
Old Shovel drinking game- take a shot every time he says “Reset”
Perhaps.
Gustavo Poyet Mayhaps.
Grate, nuw im supper drunk
Wow, just wow, you definitely nailed that paint job. How I wish I could sent my old mongoose to you to get it restored.
I went and watched your old Canoe video after you mentioned it. That was a good story. Thanks for the resets with every video.
Lov the words of wisdom and your calm restorations
Very cool! I have a 23 year old Gary Fisher Ziggurat. $1700 23 years ago. So amazing back in the day along with my youth! Keeping as garage art😀
A great paint job. As the restoration of the bike.
Thanks a lot for the video.
I have a old gary fisher marlin genesis i building from the ground up like these one. U inspire me to do the same and within money lol. Thank u for the video u said it perfectly. And that bike. WOW gorgeous. I hope to be as good as u one day. Bikes to me is a art and passion

I'm a huge fan from the philipines. I really love classic bikes.
Awesome thanks
Autumn is comming fast but this year it doesn't bother me much. I have so many inspiration after your movies that I just can't wait for those short days. Spending them in my workshop will be a great pleasure. Thank you so much for your work and wish you the best. Peace
Have a 1998 Fisher Big Sur in the garage…looking at it differently now. Thanks!
Beautiful work..you've inspired me to bring back a bike back to life that needs saving. Excellent paint work..wish I could get your skill level
Mmmm... Love these. Always more than just fixin' old bikes.
Thanks
Right. I dont understand 'fixies' 🙄😏 But looks good. Old/new mix ✌🏼
I really enjoy you videos. You’ve inspired me to get an old Mtb and rebuilt it like you do it in your videos. It is so much fun. Thanks for the great videos and keep on making them rebuild videos!
Greetings from Germany
That paintjob is beyond sick.
I wish I could do something like that...
Regards!
Great build. I’m just doing mine now and really enjoying the process so far.
I restored a couple of old 90s mountain bike too. Such great fun to ride.
Starting to really like the old bikes. Always have my eye out for them! Nice video as always.
Awesome
I'm sure you hear it enough but you do an awesome job. It looks totally great.
Damn!!!!! That is a sweet ride I love the way you did the paint, the bike is beautiful in every way. Nicely done 😉 Take Care
Stunnin' paintjob. Developing little by little. Inspirational.
I found your channel a few days ago and have watched 3-4 of your vids a day since. Mesmerizing and inspirational!! Keep up the great work!!
Really nice restoration, sir.. two thumbs up 👍👍
You are a very good worker. Very good job. A lot of passion to restore a bike. Difficult today to find it. Bravo!
Thanks
Your builds are always great, but what a great message to go with it. Very cool. Atb, Tony
Excellent work!! Those letters looks amazing!
Hey! Love watching your Retro MTB restoration sir!
Always enjoy your video. Your voice are so calm and relaxing to listening with. Good job from the Island of Borneo.
Your videos are awesome and ease me up during hard times, keep up the great work
