I'm 70 years old and really enjoy your channel. But I don't have the time and income to collect and sample all the Bourbons you show. My choices I buy bottle or two at a time are: Old GrandDad Bottled In Bond, 114, Wild Turkey 101, Knob Creek, Maker's Mark especially the Barrel Proof, Evan Williams Bottled In Bond. An occasional bottle of something else. Keep the show going!
Paul if you have the opportunity try and get your hands on Wild Turkey Rare Breed, if you enjoy higher proof you will love the Rare Breed and it's not incredibly expensive.
Have fun with it! I guess I won’t see it in Germany, we are still some kind of diaspora for „better“ Bourbons. You can find the regular James E. Pepper here, but I don’t expect seeing that bottle - and if it came to Germany, the price point would be over 100 Euro. And I wouldn’t buy it for that kind of money, I drink Scotch and Bourbon, and you can get some really, really great Single Malts for 100+ here. I‘m more than thankful the owners of Driftless Glen decided to distribute some of their whiskies to Germany, their Ryes are delicious and the small batch Bourbon is really good. But most of the time I watch those videos and think „Yeah, it sounds amazing, but no chance I will stumble over a bottle of this stuff“. Well, I guess you can’t always get what you want .. Cheers 🥃
I live near Lexington. The James E Pepper distillery was abandoned in 1958, similar to the 1957 Chevy worth a lot more than the 1958 from the recession then. It was remodelled in 2019 for 2 restaurants and the smaller new distillery. I watched color TV for the first time in 1967 when I was 8, at a richer neighbor's house. The Munsters TV show was one of the last in black and white, cancelled when the Batman TV show in color had a lot more viewers even though it has more reruns now.
I love seeing James Pepper on the channel. We loved touring that distillery and their regular rye is on my keeper list. They recently started distributing in MO so it's easier for me to get.
They are also right in the same area as RD One and Barrel House. Great way to spend half a day in Lexington if you make the trip to KY. There are a couple restaurants right there as well.
I absolutely love that bottle, I just wish they were available in Indiana. I picked up my bottle from the distillery back in October, which is essentially when it was released, and now I need a replacement. Yes, it did make Fred’s list, coming in at #25 for 2023.
I recently got a batch 3 from my local store and loved it. Already sold out but now have a later batch in stock. Was worried the later batch might not compare, but maybe they're all excellent?
Great review and nice price! I know it sounds strange but take a bottle of water add about an ounce of lemon juice, ounce of Braggs apple cider vinegar, and a little sugar free sweetener. I drink one in the morning and one in the afternoon/evening. It works for good digestion, acid reflux, and overall health. It stops heartburn as well. Cheers
I picked this up in late December here in Arkansas. I think it’s fantastic. I got a good caramel and toffee note on the nose and palate with a bit of sweet fruit. I’d definitely get another when mine empties.
Happy Birthday Kurt. I just celebrated mine and I was able to get a JD single barrel Rye. Ben Holladay soft red wheat and a little Buffalo trace for some birthday gifts. Made out like a king I feel haha
Store had a grand opening got in some rare breed. Heard how generously you guys talked about it. Got one last night and wow.. first wild turkey product in the collect and oh my god is it amazing.
I remember when we got our first color TV. Plus happy birthday on the 9th Kurt. A great day for a birthday. We are real close to the same age, and share a birthday.
Came back to watch this video again after picking this up for $50 today. Great value! The store I bought it at had over 20 bottles - reply to this message if you're in the St. Louis area, and I'll happily point you in the right direction.
I picked up a bottle of their bottled-in-bond and rye while visiting their store. They are both delicious. Next time I am in KY I will buy more and try this too. Thanks for the entertaining videos!

A local distillery tatersall released a rye/malted rye mashbill and that stuff is pure fig on the palate. I'm excited to see more people experimenting with malted grains as it really opens up what you can do with the flavors
Found James E Pepper 1776 straight bourbon whiskey at TW in Texas for $27. If I see this one, I'll grab it. Tastes good, check. Decent price, check. Unique / attractive bottle, check. Great video as usual.
Also there story is so similar to Ben Holladay. They were shut down for quite a while and when they started distilling again they used the same mash bill from 1856 when the distillery was originally founded.
Sounds like a buy, but i have to say the best deal out there might be $32 for 1L of rare breed ncf. Recently scored a few bottles and the hype is real!
Happy belated 60th Kurt. I'm fairly new to the channel and have been appreciating bourbon more and more lately. Thanks in part to you guys. 🎉.. My amazing wife just brought me a bottle back from a trip and accidentally exposed me to the best bourbon I've had. I wonder if you might have tried it and if so can ya yell me others similar. I'm searching for more and hope you can try it and recommend others like it! 👍 Thanks, and I hope to drink with ya some Friday night.
Thank you gentleman, I will put this on my list to review upon my next visit to the local store. I usually top out at $50 for a daily sipper, however, this sounds like something for nicer moments.
Haven't tried the decanter series. If anyone hasn't bought the standard James pepper rye (usually around 35 bucks, 100 proof) it's one of the best bang for buck mixers out there. Fantastic Manhattan and any other rye cocktail. Brings a lovely black pepper and vanilla note to a cocktail. Don't care for it as a sipper though.

This bottle ranks below most "good" $40-60 bottles I own (and that's... a lot of bottles). I keep throwing it into blinds and it keeps placing bottom or second to last. There's nothing wrong with the pour - there just isn't anything good or interesting about it. At worst it sometimes comes across as a bit bitter/sour for no reason compared to most pours. It's not oaky, it's not fruity, and it's not heavy honey/brown sugar... it's like the perfect center of the bourbon flavor chart but every tasting note was a 2/5, except maybe a 3/5 for funk/bitterness.
