In another world, the ball doesnt bounce of the post and go straight to bonucci for him to tap in and England win 1-0. It's easy to criticize southgate but sometimes it's just luck 🤷‍♂️.

Yes. They caught Italy cold and got the early goal. Credit for that, but Donnarumma never had to make another save for 118 minutes. After the first 15 or 20 minutes Italy dominated the game. Why? They weren't composed or confident in THAT exact moment because they weren't having a good game. To minimize this risk, the penalty takers must be chosen based on in-game performance. You choose the players who performed the best in 90 minutes of the game. For instance, Maguire, a defender, scored his pen. Why? He was confident and had a good performance in 120 min. Nedum & Steve got it wrong. Statistics give empirical evidence: players who enter to take a pen at the 120, these two, like Zaza for Italy in 2016, Carragher in 2006, all missed. The same reason why an otherwise excellent Maguire terribly mispasses to Pickford (to give a corner) in the 1st min or why Di Lorenzo missed Shaw's run on the 2nd. It's the nerves and pressure of starting a big game, over time you shake it off as you get more and more involved. As you walk to the spot from the middle, your heart beats faster and your stomach cramps, while most others on the pitch had the benefit of going through that 120 mins earlier

But it does make sense because it goes against Southgate style. Southgate would never do it because he was so defensive and wanted the block solid. I bet Southgate didn’t want to leave himself expose for 5-10 mins. They don’t play attacking so he wasn’t confident to be so attack minded in the crucial ending. They prob never even practiced with so many Attackers on the pitch. He was providing a perspective that Southgate might have had. Yes it was wrong but it shows a coaching change needs to be made

Disagree with Onuoha about not needing to get warm before a penalty. Anybody who has ever competed at any level will tell you that you're more nervous/anxious at the very beginning of your play time. But once you've had some touches, passes/shots, tackles, ect. you get into a flow state where you're less nervous and get into a rhythm. Rashford/Sancho never got into that rhythm of the game. They were at their most anxious just entering extremely late and that was compounded even more by having to take a penalty with the tournament on the line.

Even if it’s not FIFA’s rule it was my rule. Respect to Southgate, but if a coach is able and allowed to do that, then by that reckoning, Italy should have been allowed to swap out Donnarumma for a fresh keeper that had not played through to extra time! Add to that the expectations of the home crowd and the whole nation watching and it pure madness to have them come in basically cold to take just 1 penalty.

Southgate, my man made a career out of missing a penalty and he played the extra time in a way to take it to the penalties. Rashy and Sancho arent bad players ! They could have actually done something on the pitch even in 10 minutes you dont know !. they're as good a player as Phillips or sterling why not sub them off and put sancho and Rashy on and have a go at the weary italian defense in the last 10 minutes or so

Anyway, if I can see that on the TV, Southgate should’ve seen it 10 times better.
And I agree that the young players should’ve gone first. And I also agree that subbing in a player for the exclusive reason to score that one penalty in the final is madness. That just increases the pressure many folds. Rashford and Sancho didn’t have the opportunity to make a difference in the 120 minutes before, so they understood that this one shot was what they would be judged by, in a final no less. One can only imagine what that does to the mind of a young player like this. An experienced player who has seen it all may be better equipped to deal with this pressure, though it would have been tough even for him.

That was exactly the point. Saka should have gone first or second so, in case he missed or his shot got saved, there would have been other chances to put the shootout back on track. As Italian who remembers Roberto Baggio missing his penalty at the 94 world cup final, I very well know the consequences of that mistake. Roberto Baggio's career got stumped and his reputation as a penalty taker was in tatters. He ended up playing for mid-ladder teams and not being capped again for the national team in spite of his great results at team level with those mediocre squads. I think the contentious points are:
    1) Why did Southgate not send in players who could help England go for the win earlier? Sending in Rashford and Sancho just for penalties at the 120th minute indicates he had no interest in sending them on to go for the win. Why would he rather want to take it to penalties in the first place, given he had the players on the bench to really take it to the Italians? If he's playing just to not lose, is that the approach England want to maintain?
    2) Why was Saka taking the 5th penalty when it's very likely the 5th penalty is gonna be the decider? Did Southgate think it's a good idea to leave a potential decider penalty to a youngster who hasn't taken a professional penalty before?

I personally believe it’s more of a psychological issue. By ‘being brought on’ to take a penalty it suggests that you are in a way ‘expected’ to score. That adds even more pressure onto the crazy amount of pressure they already have. We need to test/practice how our boys deal with pressure (of course as much as technique). I.e get the whole squad watching intently when practicing penalties, mindfulness meditation to calm negative thoughts, use VR to simulate occasion and desensitize the response to the visual/audio stimulus etc.

It's been done in European football before too e.g. Alan Shearer being a great example of someone you can sub on to get a definitive penalty and rattle the opposing keeper in the process. The issue is Southgate used the wrong strategy for this group of guys. Stevie and Nadum, are not making sense what so ever, what made England lose the match at the end is the exact mentality that Stevie is arguing for, i.e. being too frightened to make a positive substitutions to win the game.

Love how deluded the English are long it may continue, you were lucky for the game to even go to pens and have a 50-50 chance to win it, a chance that you didn't deserve based on what we have seen from other teams that couldn't go far because they were on wrong side of the draw. If Chiesa hadn't been chopped down by the English and subbed off the English wouldn't go anywhere near pks, so don't cry that you lost, just be grateful that you got there despite being appalling to watch.

It's not our fault that ESPN FC wants a few more clicks by dragging this on. All my English friends almost universally agree that we should have been more attack minded to try and win the game. Winning on penalties would have been undeserved.

@@hanumanguy Fairplay to you mate but not only ESPN but I've been listening to Guardian, BBC, various other podcasts and they tend to focus on pens and why this guy took it or why that one didn't take, I haven't seen an universal agreement that we lost because we don't have a midfield who can dominate possession.

That's funny... You say "You lost" in your first post, then went on to say "We" in the second.
If you're going to try and disguise the fact you're Scottish by playing yourself off as English, make sure the Scots aren't doing it on masse and make it too easy to see. Like you did here. It's just too pathetic. But hey, the racism, hate and obsession is juts far too ingrained in you now.
