I saw these guys right around this same time in Vancouver BC at a club called Oil Can Harry's. I sat right in the front row just below Pat Metheny. They had two bass players that night with Eberhard Weber being the other bassist. Steve Swallow really blew me away with his solos, he was a lead bass player and Weber just of filled out the sound with his floating sound. It was a great show.
...wow. Thanks so much for the upload. Staggering creativity on display. Burton is a master. Young Metheny is a treat, and obviously a tower of power in the making. This is my favourite Gottlieb drumming i've seen/heard-- totally reframes him in my mind. And Steve Swallow is astounding on that Gibson hollow-body bass guitar. Kudos to the techs who orchestrated the sound and visuals. It is a historic document. Perfection all around.
Before i ask another fan like me a question I should have said a BIG Thank You to BibiAudiofil2 for taking the time too share this Gem of an amazing and rare video ! Sorry !
It's impressive to see Pat Metheny's strong musical presence and maturity even at his young age, (22?) in the video. It isn't surprising at all he teamed up a musician with the depth of Gary Burton who apparently was just as impressed. Not too long after this concert, at a music festival in Texas, (I think), Metheny would run into a keyboard artist with long frizzy hair named Lyle Mays. And then....
I had a chance to see this group multiple times in Boston in 1976 at the Jazz Workshop, a small club in the city. It was my first time to see Burton, but I saw him many times over the 3 years I was there in Boston. I also got to see Metheny and his Bright Sized Life band, Jaco was truly amazing.
I almost forgot about this. This was my first exposure to Pat Metheny. A double billing with these two guys, I'd come to see Gary Burton. What a gift. I was hooked on Pat Metheny ever since. I remember Steve Swallow on upright base playing with his mouth open, Gary's amazing double mallet touch. University of Maine at Orono I believe. Gary is amazing great footage! I would end seeing the Pat Metheny Group at Colby College and in Portland Maine. Change in lineup. Steve Swallow left I believe around soon after this time, if I recall. I just love the earlier material being posted on You Tube as of late. I'm recalling that they played Crystal Silence, I'm waiting to see. Anxiously I might add. Oh well not here.
UMO....I might have been at that very same concert (in the mid '70s). Eye opening, to say the least. Burton, Metheny, Swallow and Mick Goodrich on guitar and Bob Moses (I think) on drums.
Pat is my all time favorite guitar player. Nobody phrases like him. Gary Burton somehow never hits a bad note. Dan gotleib of course goes on to be PMG's drummer for many years. Swallow never gets much credit but should. The combo of a pick and a short scale hollowbody bass was unheard of in jazz at the time! Truly a trail blazer. And they play 2 Carla Bley tunes, swallow's wife BTW. Great stuff thanks
Wow, this is smokin'...22 yr-old Pat w/ future PMG drum-whiz Danny Gottlieb and Pat's long-time bandleader Gary Burton, with an excellent Steve Swallow on bass. This is great!
I heard and saw them playing exactly this program of beautiful music live at Freiburg university ! (must have been 19779) Unforgettable. Have been following Pat Metheny ever since !
Sirabhorn... The song that eary!? Whow! The recent interview with Metheny. Tell's a lot about his Gary Burton period. The performance illustrates perfectly. The face of Metheny speaks here and then. Little mistakes that don't listen as a mistake... but he wanted different... in the split decision... The guy 22 od years, and that high level of making music... Already pushing the promise of PMG sounds :-) Who knew then... Thanks for posting! Top!
.. thanks Bibi for uploading this, I’m up to Sea Journey right now and man, I got to tell you that if you went to Berklee in the 1970s and you’re seeing this for first time so many years later, it is totally mind blowing brother..this is the raw Metheny that everyone in Boston was still talking about..when you saw these guys back then there, Metheny, John Scofield, Mike Stern, Bill Frisell, Kevin Eubanks..you were witnessing the evolution of jazz guitar right in front of you..wow..foundational sh*t for sure..this video is almost a complete music course of study..jazz lives..stay safe and stay strong..New York May 20, 2021..
Gary Burton has always been one of my favourite musicians, since I heard his record with Keith Jarrett, from 1970-1971, and then The New Quartet from 1973, both fantastic records. Of course, being quite young at the time, I first heard those records a few years later, it would be around the time this recording took place, 1976, when I had turned 15. I also got the Ring album, with Pat and Eberhard Weber, however I didn't like that as much. Too intellectual for me at the time, I think. But this concert is more direct and outgoing in nature. Gary really could swing his ass of if he wanted - one of the great geniuses of modern jazz! I thoroughly enjoyed reading his autobiography a couple of years ago. Thanks for uploading this, wherever you got this from, and of course thanks to NRK for having the insight and policy to document important artistic happenings; that is so rare today, even for public service companies.
Tremendous! Four of my favorite ECM musicians. Burton is amazing. The rest of them just getting going. Plus playing Carla Bley tunes. Another favorite of mine.
A long time fan of Pat Metheny (and Gary Burton through this recordings with Chick), but thanks to this video, I've a new found appreciation of Gottlieb. Much thanks for this! And wow ... another version of Sirabhorn! Love Steve Swallow (especially his compositions on Crystal Silence), but why do I keep spelling him 'Swallowed'? 😂
Freakin’ awesome. It reminds me so much of stuff great musicians many years later. In my mind I can hear Rosenwinkel tearing up these changes or even Bela
This is fantastic! And totally amazing that the quality is this good given the primitiveness of audio/video tech back then. I know, I was around then and playing music myself. My video (click my pic) came five years later and its quality isn't nearly this good.
This is such great music and performing that it makes me melancholy. Because as far back as 1976 the music industry hadn't completely destroyed the musical taste of the coming generation. Led Zeppelin had just released Presence. you could still see groups like this in small clubs, Madonna hadn't polluted the radio and pop world yet, we had room for new stuff but like having the room. No Kenny G. Sigh.
Not many people know this, but I once rented an apartment at the bottom of the left leg of Danny's pants. Very spacious and the rent was reasonable. #bellbottoms 😁
God bless Gary Burton for letting young Pat do his thing...he very easily could have told him to tone it down. When you have a virtuoso, you let him do what virtuosi do...
Digging this video and what appears to be a Alaskan native, Chilkat, blanket image painted on the wall behind the band. Chilkat image in Oslo? Anyway, this is historic footage of every member of the band. Glad Pat traded in the flower power shirt for his now famous stripy shirts.
Black and white video. Where was it recorded? Oslo. I just noticed. Sound quality is excellent. And Gottlieb has a great feel throughout. It’s a real treat hearing them play Carla Bley’s “Ictus,” a really soulful, simple tune.
I don't think Burton liked Gottlieb, I recall a song they played and at the end Burton turned and gave him a dirty look, he was looking at the floor.... Bob Moses was much better to experience....
Yes, and it seems he is actually playing it too! Before he got the tooth brush in there, the bridge pickup removed, tape over the pickup hole, and at some point also added a MIDI pickup
This is the era of ECM that my brother and I were listening and studying so much.....just outstanding
Was your brother Kevin?

Museq is what makes the World go round...Great Jazz set,Masters !...
MMmmmmm the oldest Pat Metheny performance I've ever watched so far! I really appreciate it

I suggest to see Rick Beato's interview to G.B.
@@williechapuis1955 and now his interview with Pat Metheny!
@@sivadyert and Beato covering September 15th dedicates it to Lyle.

This is fantastic! Also pretty cool to see the iconic 1960 Gibson ES-175 before the "modifications".
Not exactly....that started life as a one-pickup guitar.
Here at least it sounds like a guitar. After this his tone got horrible.
Toothbrush strapholder ?
This guitar has always sounded great!

Get hold of "Learning to listen", Gary's autobiography!
Steve's solo on Chick's tune is lit🔥
Love the side shots of Gottleib and Gary showing their synchronisation. Masters all.

Hi Chris ! Thank's for your interesting facts and comment ! If Pat was 22 years old in 1976, would you know Gary Burton's age ? Cheers from Québec !
@@stefaneau2112 I don't know Gary's exact age, but I believe he's about 8-10 yrs. older than Pat. Cheers from America!
This is like the blueprint for Steps Ahead, also some Zappa like elements in here too... Pat really did have it all together even back then.
I heard and saw them playing exactly this program of beautiful music live at Freiburg university ! (must have been 19779) Unforgettable. Have been following Pat Metheny ever since !

Pat Metheny was born a monster... all these musicians are top notch...
Muchas gracias, este video es una joya.......
Gary puts his whole body into playing the vibes. At one point he looked quite sweaty and out of breath during an interlude chat with the audience.
Dreams so Real is a massive force in my life.
Thanks for this!
Freaking brilliant, amazing, rockin. ❤️ Thanks for upload! Holy wow. Great find! Looking in crowd for in my mom's lap.

any of you fans remember Hotel Hello? that was a big album for me BITD...
Amazing!!! Thanks!!!
As a musician, it’s hard for me to watch this as I realise I’ll never be half as good as any of these players.
I think this is the oldest video where I’ve seen a Peavey amp (in this case, a cabinet)
Black and white video. Where was it recorded?
Oslo. I just noticed.
Sound quality is excellent.
And Gottlieb has a great feel throughout.
It’s a real treat hearing them play Carla Bley’s “Ictus,” a really soulful, simple tune.
Not in Oslo, in Molde - a small town on the West coast of Norway, famous for it's annual Jazz Festival
I don't think Burton liked Gottlieb, I recall a song they played and at the end Burton turned and gave him a dirty look, he was looking at the floor.... Bob Moses was much better to experience....

Is that a young Van MOrrison in the audience at 10:28?
Is that a bridge pickup in that ES-175? This is a *very* early video.

what's with oslo spectators clapping
What do they usually do? Just curious.
Oh, I see, at the end when they rhythmically clap. Not too, too strange, though.
1976. People weren't afraid to be themselves in the 1970s - even in reserved, 'glacial', 'Nordic' Scandinavia.
i didn´t know that Fidel Castro was bassist.
