  • The 2021 Mercedes-Benz E450 All-Terrain is a wagon that wants to be an SUV. Does it accomplish that task? No, not really. Instead, it's a great wagon that's trying too hard to be something it's not and it suffers a bit for that. Still, it is an E-Class wagon and it's a darn good one even in the face of our complaints. Would we buy one? Of course. We love the E-Class Wagon, even when it's cosplaying as a crossover.

I have a 2022 version of this and I agree that the "All Terrain" designation is a misnomer at best. This is a fine and polished machine that oozes the German-built E-class quality and performance, and the wagon bodystyle takes it to perfection. It smothers road imperfections well and can get through a bit of a rough terrain just fine......which is pretty much what all SUVs are subjected to, all their lives ! It gets to a ski lodge in style and comfort, and I am glad I bought these while these are still being offered. Unfortunately, since Mercedes keeps the supply of these wagons really low in the US, the dealers tend to jack up prices over MSRP, which is a sad state.

If the reviewer did his homework he he would have realized that the All Terrain can handle some very muddy , pitted dirt roads and can even go up 40 degree hills of mud and bumps. The four wheel drive system works very well and the independent air shocks can handle very rough terrain and rough unpaved roads. It is not a Jeep Renegade and will not go up sides of rocky mountains terrain. It is more suited with the name of Audi's competitive wagon the All Road.

Dude you’re way too hung up on the name. No one who is shopping this car is going to look for anything beyond mild gravel.

@P F .. +1 Agreed... The Benz E450 wagon and the Audi A6 Allroad are luxury wagons first and foremost. .. Fully optioned, as many are, is in the neighborhood of $85K to $90K to open... " Mild gravel road" at best. .. The All Terrain nomenclator is a trim level aesthetic,, nothing more; Our narrator Hooniverse needs to smell the marketing bacon. .. Cheers

Yes, he obviously never took Marketing 101. This car will see as much wilderness as any $70k + suv. Dude needs to chill and be thankful that Mercedes is supporting our wagon needs.

It’s sad that the US doesn’t get the standart wagon version without the plastic cladding

Where’s the ^2 version with portal axles? That’s the one I’d be interested in!

Is it as capable as an _A6 allroad?_

@Mr. Jean Deaux ... Plus & Minus for both... Both are luxury wagons first and foremost. . Their flexible chassis ride height is a welcome assist when the snow starts to fall here in Vail, Colorado. elevation 8,200 FT.. As for each raised ride height, the Audi A6 Allroad has the Mercedes beat by 2 inches or more with the '22 Subaru Outback XT Touring the highest (fixed height) at approximately 8.75 inches. I'd yield to caution when driving either on dusty/dirt Forest roads, like those throughout Colorado. The engine bay, door sills, and undercarriage get smothered in fine dust & dirt. .. It's a bitch to get thoroughly cleaned. .. In the end, we ordered the '23 Merc E450 All Terrain because of its chassis and newly developed inline 3.0 turbo 6cly. .. And lastly the Mercedes dealer network,,, at least here in the Denver, CO market.
This,,, coming from a big Audi Fan ... Bought new a 1995.5 UrS6 Avant which became my daily driver for 10 years.
That RS2 Esq motor w/ 5sp manual Quattro was the Uber Ski wagon of the day. The E450 was ordered in Selenite Grey Metallic w/ Creme Beige Nappa Leather, most all options; $89,490.00 List .. Delivery in the end of Septermber '22 ...

Bring back the luxury edition E Class wagon.. They are ruining it, I could sit in the jump seat in the back of my old W124 wagon and I am 6'5. My W212 wagon isn't as roomy in the rear.... The new wagons look ugly.

They never changed the name to All-terrain for the facelift. That has always been its name. The pre-facelift E-Class also had an All-terrain variant, not just the regular urban version. There is a difference between the Estate (wagon, I guess) and this car you are reviewing, which is the All-terrain. These are two different cars. The Estate does not come with the robust plastic cladding or extra underbody protection. Never did. The cladding is all in body colour. And its maximum ground clearance is lower than this All-terrain. They still offer the Estate you want it to be. This car you are reviewing can also be optioned with much smaller wheels and a less precious paint. Your tester was configured for more urban use, of course. You can make this very capable and rugged if you specify it correctly. Be smart.
Still, the GLE is the one to go for if you want the best off-road E-Class. This All-terrain still does well.

Perhaps in other markets, but in the US it's just E63 AMG or the E450 All-Terrain. We can no longer get the non-plastic-clad non-AMG wagon anymore, which is a shame.

Shame about that hideous plastic body cladding especially if you get a bright color. They ruined a beautiful design. A car built by a marketing team.

While the reviewer's rant did him no good as a reviewer, I do understand. The SUV nomenclature is also very misleading . . . . and instead of selling 'Station Wagons" and "mini-Vans", they come up with SUV (really, SPORT Utility Vehicle?) and viola! The men want one. Stupid? yeah . . .rantable . . no. American at it marketing best . . .damn right!

here we have a typical postmodernist ranting a good portion of the video with his problem with a name: 'All-Terrain' and catastrophically failing to understand the marketing slant and buyer intelligence. The feeling he needs to define things for the world according to his perspective is unwelcome. No one cares

The All Terrain does NOT pretend it is an SUV. Weak minded reviewers cannot help but take cheap shots the All Terrain. Mercedes produces a full arsenal of SUV's so they do NOT have to produce a car that pretends anything. The bulked up All Terrain revitalizes the legendary MB Estate wagon and gives us a modern interpretation of what a wagon can look like and accomplish. Don't let these weak minded reviewers jade your opinion. They are ignorant and clueless sources of noise.

These 'reviewers' have to complain and grumble or else they have very little to offer.
This guy opines over and over about his dislike of the name. Grow up! Does the Dodge Dart Swinger name upset you? Is the Subaru Brat hurtful? Is the AMC Gremlin offensive?
It is just a NAME made up for marketing purposes. Stick to legitimate issues and let go of your name obsession.
