Interesting, the skid plates and underbody protection does help negate the limited ground clearance. It's a luxury wagon, best used for getting to the high point of the hill to see the sunrise and sunsets. If you have the money for this, chances you have something more capable for the real ruff stuff.
The premium rugged wagon market is looking really good with E All-Terrain, A6 Allroad & V90 Cross Country all available. All three are great cars! Sad about the ground clearance on this one but the 4Matic system looked really good. Probs a great car to go alpine vacation with. Maybe a do a three car showdown between the wagons? Being a european we sadly don't get all those TRD Pro or Forester Wilderness-type of cars. Our market does quite differ alot from yours on those type of cars so it's really fun to see cars that we on this side of the pond can relate to.
I have one of these 2022s in the same polar white color. I agree that the “All Terrain” designation is a misnomer. It is really a luxury wagon that can take you from Point A to Point B, in hushed luxury, and the engine does pack a wallop ! Keep the engine at the “comfort” level and you could be cruising effortlessly at 75-80mph, while returning 32-35mpg. Of course the Sport+ setting turns it into the beast mode…..I personally have set it to the “I” (Individual mode), with the suspension and steering at the Sport+ level, while the engine is set at the Comfort level.
So it's more like E450 All Street 😃 Thank you for this interesting and honest review. I used to take my 2019 E-Class Estate light off-roading and didn't like the fact that raising the air suspension limits the upper shock travel so you get crashing noises on bumps.
In my area the price difference isn't that huge. A fully equipped e450 sedan, remember not comparing to e350, is probably mid 60s to 70. These wagons are selling around my area for 74k ish with most options checked.
Ryan, Don't worry, we can smell the fragrance of money through our screens. On that subject, it continues to confound me that with the exception of Subaru, automakers can make a business case for premium wagons but not mainstream ones. Since that is the case, I hope the Crown Estate adds to the premium wagon fleet.
I like because of the lack of ground clearance, I prefer wagon body style that has little to no lift, and good handling around twisty mountain roads. I do prefer some body cladding as it protects against rock chips around the wheel arches. I don't know if It's only Direct Fuel Injected or also Port Fuel Injection for better reliability, both will be best (Lexus-Toyota) (no carbon buildup) and good for emissions too.
I can get a $60 massage at a store front that will blow away any cheesy car massage seats. These vehicles are going to be a nightmare in a few years when you need electronics work... I suggest leasing for sure!

Here, in Minnesota, the ground clearance that this Mercedes has just wouldn't be very useful and would get stuck during/after winter storms. I used to have a car that had that low of ground clearance and I would be digging myself out of side streets and cul-de-sacs, pretty frequently.
I sat in the rear seats of this and the GLE and the difference is crazy. The e-class hardly has space for adults in the back seats. The GLE feels super spacious and comfortable.
Try the C-class backseats. They will make your calves and ankles numb in 15 minutes. Provided you can get them between the front and back seats at all. 🤣
Good looking MB Avant. Although, in this color combo, it kinda reminds me of a Subaru outback. Then again, MB is probably trying to steal some of that $$$ by enticing buyers to a more luxurious Outback. Those jump seats!!! Reminds me of the C5 Audi allroad. Very Capable!!! If I had 90k laying around? I would not buy this, although I love Wagons/Avants. If It needed to be a Mercedes? I'd definitely opt for the GLE instread. Great review on a good looking wagon, Ryan.
1:03 Everything I find says 5.8 at the lowest, and let’s just say you pop the air suspension up to 6.3.. still higher than a CHR, or Trax. The expectation that a Mercedes owner is going to go hard core off roading is ridiculous. Gravel roads, going to the cabin or lake.. this will do them just fine. 25 mpg average too? I’d rather have this than any silly crossover.
6.3" will do fine in most conditions. But if there's a heavy snowstorm, like what happens here, a lot, in Minnesota, you're staying home or leaving early from work. God forbid you get stuck at work. In that case you're asking your coworker who has a vehicle with more ground clearance to drop you off at home.
What pisses me off is that the ground clearance on regular e wagon with adjustable air suspension was perfectly adequate for the said roads. But MB had to ruin it w/ this hideous all terrain to appease the North American market.
When will you be getting the new E-Class to review? Hopefully you get the sedan and all terrain. Mercedes really needs to send you more cars, more often. The same with the other Germans.

An added datapoint to Ryan’s review…..the Mercedes quoted 5.7” of ground clearance is when the car is loaded down to its maximum payload level (check the Mercedes literature !). In other words, when the car is loaded up with an additional 1400lbs (which is the E450 wagon’s max payload), the All-Terrain’s ground clearance is 5.7”. Most manufacturers’ quoted ground clearance (of 8” etc) is when the vehicle is empty, while the ground clearance when it is fully loaded, is significantly below that. I believe when the Subaru Outback is fully loaded upto its maximum payload of around 900lbs (significantly lower than the Mercedes’ payload of 1400lbs), it would lower that vehicle down by *at least* another 1.5 inches. So in case of ground clearance between the Mercedes and others, we are really talking apples to oranges, even though I personally wish the Mercedes had an extra 2 more inches of clearance than its current level.
This vehicle was designed for hunters and horse people in Europe. We barely have any trails, most people will just use it to get through really muddy terrain which the normal E can't.
It's true the ground clearance for Mercedes Benz 450 is not as much as that of Subaru outback, but it's still looking good and better that non all terrain Mercedes Benz Estate. I love that All terrain Mercedes Benz

I don't think anyone is expecting to take their $80,000 luxury estate offroad. At most they will drive on a gravel driveway to their farmhouse in the country
I think it’s amazing that we’ve gotten to a level of automobile engineering that so many things, from digital dash layout, to driving dynamics and suspension height, travel, etc. can be adjusted by the driver. I’m a car guy and a gadget guy so to me it is awesome. However, let’s be honest. Probably 80-90 percent of drivers are going to choose one screen layout that they like and that’s where it will sit for the duration of ownership. Same with driving dynamics etc. . Are there some people who will use all of the whiz-bang gadgets to their full potential? Absolutely. But the majority probably will not. Again, I’m not saying it isn’t amazing, just seems that some vehicles, especially the luxury brands, are getting a little carried away with all the customizations available now, and even to me, again a gadget lover, it seems to be getting a little overwhelming. I would love to have a car with all of those options, but would I use more than maybe 10 percent of them over the life of the car? Probably not. Thanks again for another great review. You completely miss the point with this vehicle. This is an ESTATE Wagon. It's not designed for you coffee drinking Pacific coasters to take offroading and semi rocking. It's designed exactly what it's clientele wants from it. It's designed to take out to the farm or to take for a Roe deer hunt. This vehicle has been in Europe since 2017 and if you look up E220 4matic All-Terrain you can find off road tests where they are driving in the Bavarian Mountains and it did so quite well. The Volvo V90 you mentioned was designed to compete with a Subaru Outback. The All-Terrain wasn't designed to compete with the Outback although the 4matic + all wheel drive system is far superior to Subarus. The All Terrain is designed as an Estate Wagon and it does it with far more class than the Outback or the Chinese/Communist owned Volvo V90. That last fact automatically disqualifies the V90 as I would never sit in a vehicle built by a Chinese Owned company. So before you do your reviews, consider doing them based on what a vehicle is actually designed for and not do it to try to poo poo it to steer people towards what you like. As much as you talk about the Volvo, I wouldn't be shocked if you took money from the CHICOMs. 😡
It's almost certainly "All Terrain" because Audi has the more appropriate "All Road" as in paved road and dirt road. The shots of the car on trail in the woods look foolish. An observant critic might also note that in Europe, customers can buy a rear-drive wagon rather than 4Matic, which would probably meet the needs of the great majority of owners. The complexity of the vehicle with its "mild-hybrid drive" and suite of electronics, and Mercedes's well-below-average dependability scores (J D Power) also suggest caution to anyone concerned about that aspect, not to mention long-term ownership costs for the few who might have that in mind.
Lol I'll pay some yuppie to see take ANY mercades off road. Why these ridiculous luxury cars try to cater to off road is beyond me. I think they are better off making a truck loaded with 100000000 computer modules and creature comforts to allow the yuppies who would buy a luxury truck feel they COULD go off road, but never would.
More overpriced *lease only* euro trash from Mercedes... sigh You'd have to be huffing paint to think actually buying basically any of their vehicles at this point is a smart investment. Kind of sad tbh
I mean, its nice af but this would be something a rich semi-outdoorsy 65yr old would buy. Or daddy bought it for me Jake that goes to mammoth/colorado with chad friends to ski during the winter.
Ironically, my watching experience was interrupted by a bunch of Mercedes ads. 🤔 Ryan, why is it that lux brands stay w/the wagon (concept) and plebian brands shun it like the moldy bread? Subaru still embraces the wagon (in the Outback), but even VW ditched theirs (Alltrack and Passat wagon) in the states. Buick had the Tour-X, which was a fabulous euro Vauxhall Insignia. There is room for great wagons in showrooms, but they have to be fast. Ppl are worried about the stigma associated with driving a wagon, yet happily toodle along in their minivan.... 🧈

So before you do your reviews, consider doing them based on what a vehicle is actually designed for and not do it to try to poo poo it to steer people towards what you like. As much as you talk about the Volvo, I wouldn't be shocked if you took money from the CHICOMs. 😡
Porsche taycan cross turismo is better and With 90 thousand you can buy rivian or the volvo v90 cross country or v60 with less money
90k for that thing? I can think of a few other cars I’d get for that money!
It's a Mercedes with Mercedes finish, quality and yes price tag to match.
Must be fully optioned or something. There are at least 4 sitting at local dealers near me, well equipped for 74k. Still large price tag, but not 90k
I thought it's a 2020 GLC facelift lowered -_-
It's even better than the GLC
@@ElegantPotatoes of course it is it's an E class :D
I just with their looks are more different since it makes it looks bland.
This isn't going to be taken off road. It's for mild winter driving. Nothing extreme.
Even lifted, this thing has way less ground clearance than my Volvo V90 Cross Country. Benz failed on this.
Mercedes Benz version Mini Cooper , you know disighn , Banglades Country just height 165cm
No, not at all. Not even close.
1 inch of lift? Mannnnnn!
Hhaa! You call that! Off roading??? Oh please in my area thats on road!! And i drive freely on such in my 2013 Avensis for work and school runs.
Thank the obsession with SUVs for this obomination
WEll duh! You have to mod it! Install a lift kit!
84k for a wagon?? Shiiiiiiii
Stopped watching after $83k price tag.
Just wait until this is $30k out of lease 👀
This will be $30k, for the 3rd owner, not the second…. It will also have 100k on it. Now, you two get back to work…. I don’t pay you to watch youtube.
So what is your bargain new wagon with similar features and petformance? Do tell. Ain't one in the US.
The station wagons of the 1970s had rear facing jump seats.
Touch control is the dumbest idea in cars ever - followed by piano gloss as a close second
Because "Some Terrain" just doesn't sound as good I guess.
hahahaha yess it is the truth
expensive cans of lemonade
Lol I'll pay some yuppie to see take ANY mercades off road. Why these ridiculous luxury cars try to cater to off road is beyond me. I think they are better off making a truck loaded with 100000000 computer modules and creature comforts to allow the yuppies who would buy a luxury truck feel they COULD go off road, but never would.
More overpriced *lease only* euro trash from Mercedes... sigh
You'd have to be huffing paint to think actually buying basically any of their vehicles at this point is a smart investment. Kind of sad tbh
I mean, its nice af but this would be something a rich semi-outdoorsy 65yr old would buy. Or daddy bought it for me Jake that goes to mammoth/colorado with chad friends to ski during the winter.
Ski instructor Chad?
heated seats in the back row, for that fucking price, You damn right it is
Ironically, my watching experience was interrupted by a bunch of Mercedes ads. 🧈
I think it’s due to volume. They have higher margins and can justify the limited numbers.
you hawe no idea of cars. no clue. if u want good car, ewen mercedes e class it got to be DIESEL 6CILINDER 3.0
400d. if it is audi a6 must be 50 or 55 d. thats 3.0 tdi. 286ps well hp in your linguage. or ewen bmw 40d. 50d. what ewer it is must be diesel. 2.0 190hp at list. no petrol. petrol has no power.
