  • This how to replace the gearcase on a makita DTD154 impact driver with failed needle bearing in the front gearcase.
    A broken needle bearing will cause the impactor to run very rough, loud and will cause excessive movement in the spindle.
    It's a quick and easy repair anyone could do at home, amd most importantly it's a cheap fix.

    Thanks for really going into the details of what you're doing and why you're dong it. I'm learning a lot about how power tools function from your videos.

    The old needle bearing looked like a common size found in automotive applications. Possible replacement? Thanks!!!

      Personally I stay away from Combis and just get a drill driver.

    Dean, it is just great to see you bring back these tools!! May I ask what you use for grease to lube things back up? I've just been given a set of well used DeWalt tools and the impact appears to need a proper breakdown, cleaning and lubrication (turning very slowly on known good battery).

    Not sure why Makita added this needle bearing to their DTD154 whereas both the DTD152 and DTD153 didn't have it, yet hardly any gearbox issues.
    Unfortunately I've seen quite a bit of these DTD154s with this bearing being gone comming in for repair.

    Makita "subcompacts" in USA are black.
    Non teal are mostly Japan market and mostly Made in Japan. As Project Farm shown between Made in China and Made in Japan Makita, the one made in Japan had higher quality insides.
    You get classic Teal, White, Purple, Yellow, Olive, Dark Red and Black body. Pro is that youll possibly get Made in Japan models and unique color, cons are that you can forget about warranty and youll need to pay import tax, normal tax etc on shipping. Something in the middle would be trying to buy new body mold and replace it on your girl.
    I was temped to buy their XGT Sander BO001G off japanese market, but Makita in my country finally put it in "New release" section, so soon it will be sold by resellers and should be around 250-300 Euro. One machine Im jealous of Japan having is the DTD173, which has that freaking Halo light up front, which when youre closing the bit into a wall or other material its basically show you with shadow exact location where it will hit.

      Tbf based Tod was comparing two different tools. TD171 from China and the 172 from rising sun and didn't know it

    • @SlowExpensive
      @SlowExpensive 4 місяці тому

      Also with Makita you should ask your local FSC if they will warranty a JDM tool. Makita Canada has said they will warranty it provided you have an original sales receipt. So eBay resellers no dice but Amazon japan they'll take it on but need to have parts available to them.
      So if my td173 eats the cracker they will warranty it once parts become available once its not just available in Japan. You might end up getting shittier parts than the JDM tho.

    • @michaelfairchild
      @michaelfairchild 4 місяці тому +1

      @@SlowExpensive Thats the point of Ebay, you might be buying from a random dude who want to make a Yen. In my country from what I know only official resellers are counted towards warranty (and buying used from people, but still all documents of sale and 3 year warranty). Ive bought the LXT 125mm sander from a company 2 years ago, but they basically bought them from UK market and resell on domestic market, so if thing goes sideways its repairing it myself or sending to them. Then again, that Sander is a unicorn as its "Made in United Kingdom" model.
