i have had the privilege of using Hilti tools a few times. They are amazing workhorses. It is a shame that they put a timer in that keeps you from doing your own service on the tools. Such things should be against the law. I am a firm believer that the owner of an item should have the right to repair it, or get the person of their choice to make the repair.

They sell to big companies a full package , for monthly fee you get the tools you need, they service those as needed, they call it Hilti Fleet Management.
Old day are gone, when Hilti tools were the best, you got most money with least down time, why else tool rental companies had selves full of those.
Only patents Hilti has today are for 12V, 22V and 36V batteries, so no copies can legally be made of their lithium ion power packs.
Patent from 1967 for a fully electropneumatic rotary hammer drill TE17, ended 1992 , then it was free for all .

Other brands like Milwaukee and DeWalt arent far behind. For many tools for you to replace e.g. a switch, youre require to buy 3/4 of the inside of the tool. Dean said that about Milwaukee, but also stated that DeWalt started to do the same. You wonder why, when in USA you send a Milwaukee for repair, they send you a new one? it seems different people have mixed experiences but most customers of hilti get a discounted price on power tools and mass discounts on consumables, which is great.I guess this service light is a way of ensuring tools always get sent to hilti in a general period of time just as a way of checking over the tool and repairing it if required usually fairly cheaply. which inturn would suggest a better overall inspection from a non tool repair specialist. i guess not all people are as in-depth as you are. i would also avoid there fleet management unless your a massive company which can’t keep track of your own tools

Hilti is a hire company now thats it. You dont buy a Hilti. You pay a monthly fee to have the tool in your inventory and whenever it breaks or needs repairs they just collect the old one and drop off a new one.
We are a large-ish general contractor and we have a Hilti tool fleet that's the only way to go with Hilti, nobody here actually buys Hilti anymore. For us it makes sense this way since their service package is great, we get a tool replaced within a day, repaired within a week and just pay a set bill on a month to month basis.
We could probably buy Bosch and Makita and save some money that way but the bossman wants the excellent service Hilti provides.

None of us here commenting are in the market anyways, i would guess - the market being fleet agreements with big companies where you buy plus 500 hammers, 250 guns and 150k fastners at a time. Then it makes perfect sense to have a kill switch build in to ensure proper, timely maintenance. You just dump it at the designated spot,, pick up a another, and the account manager with Hilti makes sure theres always working tools at the site. Its not about good or bad tools, its about running huge construction businesses efficiently and without people burning wages while dicking around missing equipment or consumables.

Yeah, I don't think I'd like the idea of being held hostage by a computer chip that HAS to be reset by the manufacturer!!! It doesn't matter how awesome a machine is, if it can only be turned back on again by the manufacturer they can charge whatever they want or you can't have your tool working again. I thought there was a law against that ....... competition commission or something. i.e. how can you have a fair price if it can only be done by one company? 🤔
