    There are three possibilities to look at still. First is.. Conditions of wiring that goes to the ecm/computer in the engine bay. Second is.. The speedometer output sensor on the 4x4 transfer case (or trans output housing for 2WD only models). Third is.. Check the throttle position sensor that is on the engine throttle body (side facing the fire wall). The ecm activates and deactivates the transmission solenoids as the engine throttle position and rpm speed varies with speedometer speed output, thus, both sensors have to be working, in order for the ecm to shift the transmission correctly, as to keep it in sync with the kick down cable action. I am not totally sure about rpm sensory, but I do think it is counted from the crankshaft position sensor, which, you will know is working if the engine is running. The ecm cannot run the engine without that crankshaft position sensor working!! On another note though, one variable that should not be looked over, is the fact the rpm might be counted by the distributor sensor (I forget the name of it). If any of the sensors I have mentioned are still old, you will do well with changing them. One more thing that most jeep guys don't do.. Is change the o2 if they keep getting a check engine light. Well, I can tell you, that most of the check engine light problems, will be because of a bad o2 sensor! I did a ton of research and found that the NGK/NTK o2 that I needed, was the 23023. I bought one, and it works great in my 91 4.0. Of course, different years, more so after 95, have differing part numbers and specifications. So be wise and make sure you get the right part to fit your model year of engine.

    This is 1 reason I don't use ATF4! DEX/MERC only for mine! It never hurts to snugg all the bolts up on the valve body while ya got the pan off also!

    The filter… it didn’t have to plug into a hole at all? It seems like it just went on like a scrub plate. I didn’t see if there was a spout.

    Possible the worst way to flush a transmission is disconnecting the oil cooler lines and running it..the money you
    Would spend buying 2 filters and all that extra fluid you could just take to a shop pay 120 and have it professionally flushed safely with a machine

    • @montydaniels1054
      @montydaniels1054 3 роки тому

      @James Galagarza .James, you got that right. As long as the oil change place can guaranty they'll be using the correct fluid & not their usual ''Bulk Fluid'' ''Junk Off-The-Wall Shit'' like an old K-Mart would have carried when they were still around... I had to stop getting our engine oil changed at the shops by me because my best friends son who worked at the best one in town. He never had either of his vehicles oil changed with their Bulk Oil but rather he brought his own motor oil & just used the facility because it was easier, plus he could keep the front-end greased, get better prices on Air-Filters & Cabin Filters & what-knot & did everything according to his personal maintenance schedule....

    Mine does this only when it’s cold. 2001 XJ AUTO 2wd. Took it to a transmission shop and have had 0 luck but have had two transmissions put in it now and I’m still having the same issues. I use the ATF which I was told to use. I replaced the throttle body cable valve and a lot of sensors and still 0 luck with this. I don’t think it has to do anything with the fluids because even with the original transmission I put ATF in it and had 0 problems

    My '93 XJ AW4 4.0 is currently having the same issue, I run dex/merc, I ended up disconnecting the battery and then unplugging the TCU (transmission control unit) located behind lower part of dash on passenger side. Then shifted manually down the road, 1-2 gear will give you only 1st, then shifted to 3rd gear with no problem or delay, had to let off the gas a bit tho, then shifted to D which will give you 4th gear. I had no problems at all which leaves me to believe it's an electrical issue. I already replaced my TPS so I'm thinking it is my speed sensor on transmission or my TCU is starting to go.

    • @Tylerjschmidt
      @Tylerjschmidt  3 роки тому +1

      Mine ended up being the transmission unit itself. If yours is having the same issues as mine, count how many times it shifts from a stop until you get up to speed. Mine skipped second gear because it only shifted four times including overdrive even though the AW4 is has 5 gears.

    • @TexasRedneck
      @TexasRedneck 3 роки тому

      @@Tylerjschmidt 5 gears? the amount of gears it has is literally in the name aw4...4 being the amount of gears. Now you do have the torq converter that will kick in and can feel like another gear.

      Jeepin Guy. Hi, I'm interested in finding out some information from ya about your rebuilt AW4 transmission rebuild. I have a 1993 XJ 4x4 w/auto trans. Do you have a website or a way to get in touch with you? I have two options, I can rebuild mine, or a guy I met about 6 months ago offered to sell me one of his Jeep XJ's that he has parked in his commercial yard stupid cheap for some work I can do in exchange so it equals out good for both of us. He did say the drive-train was all in great shape & it was certainly ready to go but I've been down that road before so I'm just thinking don't spend any of the extra cash in my XJ savings account but just keep putting money into the account so I'll have something extra in case I need a rebuild.
      ***lol Lets just put it this way, whatever happens with the two transmissions, I still wanted to have a rebuild trans ready to go if & when I needed one. In fact I want to keep this Jeep as ready as it can be, just in case someone checks mine out & offers me some crazy money for it.***

      Yes. didn’t have second gear. Replaced whole transmission. Next time you drive yours. Count how many times it shifts. If it only shifts 4 times including overdrive. You know your transmission is due for a rebuild.
