  • In this Outbound vid, we'll show you how to remove and test your AW4 auto trans shift solenoids. If your transmission is not shifting correctly a bad solenoid could be the cause. Jeep Cherokee XJ, and my Jeep Comanche. Very simple to do. We'll also give you some important tips.

    Excellent video. I'll be doing this myself in several hours. I did forget to order a transmission pan gasket so I'll have to pick that up. You definitely saved me some hassle there. !! I bought a remanufactured one several years ago and my pan doesn't have a drain plug, neither did the original. I bought a drain plug that can be installed into the pan after you drill a hole so that process isn't so messy in the future.

    I am having trouble with my aw4 not shifting back to 1st gear when stopping the jeep at a light or stop sign, thus I have to use the shifter to force the aw4 back into 1st gear, and then shift it to drive after getting the jeep up to 25 MPH. Sooner than later I am going to change transmission filter and gasket, and just because...the shift solenoids too, but I will definitely do the tests that you did, so I can make sure there isn't an electrical wiring problem. Thanks, dude!! Very helpful info!! Thanks a million!!

      Hey thanks for the comment! Glad the vid helped ya…yeah those wires definitely needed to be fixed. How’s your linkage adjustment? Mine was way off. Yeah when you drop the and change the filter definitely change all those solenoids…also make sure have the correct tranny fluid, these Aw’s are finicky…also one final thought. There is a tcm, aka a transmission control module. It’s a box under you dash…test it by unplugging it see if your shift points improve. You’ll have to manually go through the gears when you drive it. If it improves with the tcm unplugged that’s your prob. They’re cheap to replace. Hope that helps bro…Chris

    Thanks for a great video. My 96 Jeep Cherokee Sport stopped going into any gear It will not reverse or go forward. This was after a 4 hour drive home . I did have some wires (3) that were chaffed going around the dipstick. They were bare wire all touching each other and the metal dipstick. I repaired them by cutting out the bad parts and splicing in new wire. I also had (2) more wires below that went to a sensor. I fixed them too. Prior to this the jeep started and posted check engine. Now she starts and purrs with no error. It just wont go into any gear forward or reverse. I plan to look at the solenoids. Do you think this symptom is indicative of a solenoid failure?

      Hey no prob!, yes I would definitely test those solenoids. Might be your problem. Drop that pan and pull 'em. Also you can change your tranny fluid/filter at the same time Good luck man...

    Had a p0740 check engine light, pulled the solenoids and sure enough the TCC one wasn't clicking.

    Thank you. Trying to figure out what to do with 97 XJ automatic, not shifting into second at times and check engine light on. Scan tool read a solenoid code. Has over 217,000 miles on vehicle. I bought it used, so don't know all her history. Was told not to change transmission fluid, with the mileage she has.

      Hi Rj, thanks for the comment. That’s great that she’s holding with that many miles. Solenoid code, a new one would probably remedy your prob. Only thing is obviously you’d have to drop the tranny pan you pop in the new solenoid, which meansyou would have to change your transmission fluid, unless you use the old fluid. Also I’d replace all 3 solenoids while you have the transmission pan dropped…that way you don’t have to do the same procedure all over again later…hope this helps man…

    Getting a P0740 code on my 00’ Cherokee. Just checked my TCC solenoids, they’re all reading 13-14ohms. What’s my next step for troubleshooting this CEL code?

    I realize this is an older post, But I have a 1997 cherokee aisin aw4 , and I am going to put a 94 aisin aw4 as replacement, do you have any tips on how to wire up the 7 pin connector to the 5 pin connector properly, or is it same color wires needed (aside of 4x4 indicator light)thank you.

    • @outboundterrain6454
      @outboundterrain6454  Рік тому

      Jeez that’s a good question. As far as the wiring and colors go, if you had a wiring diagram and could compare connector pins and voltages that would be the ticket. Good luck with it I wish I had a better answer for ya…

      Sorry about the late response. Yes I would try the lock up sol. The cruise control check all your relays and groundings. Hope this helps

    I've got a 98 xj and I keep getting a P0700 code and I tried replacing the computer and still get same code.. ive had a filter and fluid change but not a flush.. so now I've bought new solenoids and thinking about doing a flush. My fluid is still kinda dirty. I haven't installed the solenoids yet.. do you have any suggestions? Thanks for the great video by the way..

    • @outboundterrain6454
      @outboundterrain6454  2 роки тому

      No prob thx for your comment…Code P0700 means the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) has detected a fault in the Transmission Control Module (TCM). If you have troubles with transmission shifting eventually the PCM will show the transmission fault code(s). If you don't have shifting problems the P0700 may go away on its own. Try the new solenoids, hopefully that fixes it. And make sure your shift linkage is adjusted properly. Hope this helps bro…

      @@outboundterrain6454 yeah I adjusted the throttle valve cable I got a new tps from Mopar being delivered tomorrow.. and yeah ill prob end up replacing solenoids and doing another trans service.. its just really fustrating.frustrating.. its works when I go to work about 3miles.. and when I go to on lunch and when I come back it pops the code.. to me its either a issue with the 3/4 or the lockup solenoid bit thx for replaying.. I feel like im chasing my tail

      Hey brother sorry about the late response been busy as shite...
      XJ 92 great Jeep btw...If it was mine, I would drop the pan, make sure you're running the right tranny fluid, and change ALL of the damn solenoids, while you're in there. AW4 is a strong transmission...Sounds like one of them is crapped out, reverse one especially. Cheers hope this helps.

    As a former AutoZone employee, ALWAYS CHECK YOUR PARTS. All my old coworkers, even the store manager, act like they know shit and will just bull shit you to get you to stop bothering then so they can go back to all the shit that district is bitching about, they are always understaffed and overwork their employees all the while paying them minimum wage. I started out $1.75 over minimum wage and by the time I left I was only 24¢ over minimum wage, and I am an ASE certified technician! They don't pay their employees enough to care about the customers cars, and then the customers treat the employees like they're the all knowing God. While working there, if I didn't know the answer to your question, I'd Google it. But it couldn't use my phone to Google it, nnnnooooooooo. Even though my phone is 8,776,543,346,799,764,654,322 times faster than those fuckin computers.

      Wow, sorry you had to deal with all that, bummer. Doesn’t sound like it was a good fit for you...yeah I get that kind of vibe whenever I go down there, and have been burned before. You’re right it’s sad that customers think these knuckleheads know what their talking about... we’ll hope you’ve moved on to a better gig and can use your ASE cert to make a better career for yourself. Thanks for the informative comment. Definitely will help some people out...

    Transmission shops are big rip-offs, especially Aamco, I spent almost 2000$ on a supposedly rebuilt job, after one year I changed the fluid, found out my old solenoid's were still In place, the tranmy was not removed, I could tell, since I had my XJ new, I think they just cleaned the solenoids and put em back.
