Murphy's is a lovely stout, might even be my favourite above Guinness. I wish Murphy's was more available in the West and Midlands. Its hard enough to find it on tap here. Only select bars. If only Heineken put a fraction of the money in the advertising and distribution of these two great stouts as they did with Island's Edge
Hi Darragh, really enjoyed your more balanced take on Ireland's three premier stouts. I always found Guinness and Murphy's, to be quite similar to one another and preferred Beamish, for its' more roasted barley flavour. Having said that, I've been drinking stout for more than fifty years and I was an old soul when I started. Your maturity is definitely showing and that's no bad thing, both of the Cork, stouts are too good to be dismissed out of hand. I live in Central London, where all three are available, but Guinness, almost everywhere, Murphy's, less so and Beamish, quite difficult to find. Beamish & Crawford, used to have a tie in with Young's Brewery, when it was brewed in Wandsworth, South West London, I don't think that tie still exists. At more than twice your age, I hope to enjoy my stout for many years to come and I hope you do too, all the best now.
Lads I'm a Guinness drinker all my adult life and recently went in to the Crane bar in Galway and had a few pints of Beamish They were sensational with rich creamy heads and an earthy flavour and cheaper than Guinness to boot Highly recommended
the fact that you drank Beamish in the oval is perfect, as the old brewery is literally just on the other side of the road, granted it's not made there anymore. Still, the bit about the "rolling the kegs straight out of the brewery into the pub" was most likely more accurate than you knew lol!
Shame they've both retreated from the market here on the Island Next Door. I've fond memories of them, from visiting Cork and from their venture into the UK. (I think you can still get Murphy's here and there.)
There is a pub in Essex that has (or at least did until late last year) Murphys on permanently. It’s in Westcliff-on-Sea, not historically a bad pub, but unfortunately someone was murdered there on Xmas eve, so if anyone nearby wants to chance it…
@@oscarosullivan4513 I only tried it out of the bottle and I thought it didn't work at all. Even tried pouring it through the spout of the nitrosurge but it didn't help.
Some pubs in London do have Murphy's on tap from time to time. But it is rather rare and random. The Pavilion in Sydenham used to have it, sadly not anymore
You made a very good pint (sic) about maybe moving on to another stout as you get older. I started as a lager drinker in the mid 1990s (Miller) then moved to another lager (Heineken) after a few years. I then started drinking Guinness when I was around 25 or so and then changed to Beamish in my early 30s. Having said that I would drink only Guinness when in Dublin, and drink mostly Murphy's when in Cork as it is not readily available on draft in Limerick.
Fantastic profile pic from O'Donoghue's Opera there. Fantastic imagery of Ronnie in the noose. I edited together the verses of The Night Before Larry Was Stretched from that film on my channel.
As someone who loves all three. I might have Beamish most often. But Murphys is probably the easiest down the hatch. Beamish has an almost roast coffee flavour. Guinness is lovely too.
myself and my best mate, two UK lads, we went to Cork for a short holiday and tried Beamish and Murphy's for the first time, interesting that I'm a MAHOOSIVE Guinness drinker and I preferred Beamish, my mate is MAHOOSIVE into his Ales and he preferred Murphy's, it kind of echoes what Dara says in this video
Great stuff Guru… I think you’re spot on in your analogy of starting with Guinness but progressing more onto Beamish and Murphy’s as the pallet develops. Keep up the good work and be sure to get to West Cork 👌
While in Collage in cork all the guys not from Cork switched to Murphys who drank Guinness at home... But Beamish is as popular now. Fair play to you. Your taste is evolving 🎉
We drank gallons of Murphys in Belfast in the 90s because it was £1 a pt! It would be weaker taste wise than Guinness. Unfortunately or fortunately we no longer have Murphys but we do have Beamish popping up in the Sunflower in Belfast and it is gloriously creamy. Hope they start rolling it out more in the North. Wonder what sales of Guinness are like in Cork vs. The home brews?
Old comment, but Murphy's is starting to become a lot more available in Dublin. Even more casual pubs that are more like restaurants are getting taps in. I'm guessing with Heineken cutting their losses with Islands Edge they've started pushing Murphy's and Beamish a lot more.
That comment as you sat down had me laughing before you started about the comb over 😂 I thought you were gonna do a hamlet advert then mines the same when wet no worries keep up the great reviews
Stout nights are great fun. 😁 Smithfield in Dublin was good for a while. One night last year my friend and I started in Oscars with Island's Edge and Murphy's then around Walshe's to finish on the Guinness and Beamish. I would love to find somewhere in Ireland where we could do that again. (O'Hara's included). Somerset has no problem showing off their ciders, why can't Ireland do that with stout. I also agree with your Coors and Moretti example. But Island Edge is the Coors, Guinness/Murphy's is the Moretti and Beamish is some mad Belgian Beer.
I'm looking forward to trying Beamish when visiting Ireland in August, not a massive fan of Murphys out of the can here in the uk, not seen on tap here for a good while. Murphys Irish Red is lovely!
Visited family in Limerick and Cork in 2005 and 2015 and Loved Beamish “the gentle stout”. I always found Murphys to have a roasted coffee like flavor. Returned in 2023 and Beamish was hard to find in Limerick, Galway, and Killarney. I did have a nice pint of beamish upon arrival and departure at Shannon. It was introduced here in the states on 2 occasions that I know of but never took hold.
I prefer the Beamish around Bray n Delgany. Always cheaper, more consistent and lovely Used to hate the point cus had Murphy’s. Not a bad pint ( well it’s shocking in the point) but 3rd choice of the stouts. No head in the morning either as it seem more natural less additives. Chemical whatever
Keeping this for Friday night GG. I’ll grab a can of all the stouts and see what’s happening. Also, saw you jogging again, in Portmarnock this time. Keep her lit lad 🏃♂️
Having just got back from Cork a few weeks ago and trying - my vote goes for Murphy's - really drinkable and 'light' but tbh i switched back to Guinness after about 6 pints and stuck to it for the rest of the weekend
For the UK drinker, the only place I know that serves Murphy’s in London is a ‘gentleman’s club’ called the Griffin. If anyone knows of anywhere other than a place where you have a pint glass full of pound coins shaken at you at 15 minute intervals, I’d love to know.
Hogarths Pub in South Shields part of Amber Tavern chain sell Murphy's sell it for amazing £2.20. Love to try a Beamish again but sadly can not get it England.
I found Murphys to be better than guiness when I was over Cork...guiness I've had all my adult life ,Where as Murphys isn't around in England...i found it very similar but just a bit creamier than guiness and more taste notes ...I had last night a stout called night jar and I was very impressed 👌
Love myself a pint is Murphy's but live now in Germany and struggle to find a decent Guinness at times. I come from North Cork so just within the range of a decent Murphy's
I recently did a blind taste of beamish and Guinness. Hadn't drank either in a long while. Found the Beamish to be a lot more bitter, roasty, coffee, get a burnt flavour so I assume they my use patent malt, also got a good hazelnut flavour from beamish. Thought Guinness was quite bland compared to Beamish and didn't get the flavour you should get from a stout. I did find Guinness to be more creamier. The burnt flavour you get could be from black patent malt, which is different to roasted malt. This malt also gives a blackcurrant flavour.
Your pallet is developing guru , won’t be long now before your taste buds won’t get any kick out of tasteless Guinness and watery murphys . Up the creamy beamys
Another visit to Cork and still no invitation to go for a pint, ffs Guru. I'll have to renounce my Meath heritage it this continues. Great video again all the same, the Oval is a top spot on a rainy day 👌
The range of flavours in stouts is amazing. Coffee, tobacco, liquorice, chocolate. Then you get barrel aged ones with whisky or sherry notes. Then there's the Imperial stouts that get to 7% and more. Find a good pub that does decent beer, rather than a craft beer pub, and try whatever stouts they have. It'll be a taste sensation
Agreed more traditional pubs that serve smaller independent breweries stouts tend to be better such as my local but Porterhouse Temple bar is worth the trek.
