Looks like pure magic to me 😄
Oh, Amazing. Gonna slow this video down while eating my pork pie.
Did my first fair isle knit this Spring. Star in 3 colours. It all bunched up very tight. Still proud of it.
Wow! That blue and white work is beautiful. It's like a tapestry.
Thank you! Cheers!
Ah, its like every other stitch. ❤
Thanks so much. It's wonderful to see someone who knits like me, without 2 hands or continental or combination. Just passing yarns. I was starting to feel so frustrated as I tried various methods to work 2 yarns, but I've knitted English for over 50 years and I don't think I have the dexterity to change. It was making me feel discouraged. Thanks for the close up of how to trap floats. Your work is beautiful!
Hi Shari Thank you so much for your lovely comments . We are glad to be of help. Feeling a little discouraged ourselves at the minute so thanks for your lovely comment, it has cheered us up! Jo
I’m also a very longtime knitter - continental style - and have tried many ways of color work knitting and seem to be unable to achieve the dexterity for manipulating the 2 yarns. I will try again! Will be similar for double sided knitting, which also facilitates me.
Wow ! Thankyou so much ..I have managed to work colour yarn into my knitting for few rows on latest jumper project by holding the yarn not in use across the back of the stitches and sort of knitting over them…but it is hard work very confusing (especially as I have 2 dk threads in one strand to match the other) the threads keep twisting up and I’m reversing he order all the time…..Your method looks so much easier and more organised ..can’t wait to try it !
Love your work You are firmly in my favourites for this !
I’m and English knitter who has recently converted to continental which is much faster but sometimes English is much better for the trickier manoeuvres so I tend to use both I have been an accasional knitter fo4 over 50 years so I encourage your previous commenter to give it a go ..took me about a week to feel comfortable with it . Happy knitting
❤
thankyou you have explained it so well
You are welcome!
Thanks to you I have mastered this option using continental knitting. A superior technique and I am soooooo grateful that you have kindly taught us.
You're welcome
Thanks you. So well demonstrated and explained. No messing around. A well-prepared demo.
You are welcome! Thanks
Oh WOW. This is so easy. Thank you so much.
Oh wow!!! Thank you for showing an easier way to carry floats! I've been wanting to work with two colors, but have had to resort to mosaic knitting (slip stitch method) because everything else looked so complicated. I'm so going to try this out :)
Glad it was helpful!
Now I can pretty much do any desighn of stranded knitting for my seasonal sweaters like haloween thank you for the faster way I appreciate it 😊
You are so welcome!
This is exactly how I knit my ends in. It works perfectly. 😊
Yes that's how I started using this tecnique - and never looked back
Thank you so very much. I love this technique. So much easier.
hi. many thanks for taking the time to reply. much appreciated. i have now sussed it out after putting it on slow mo lol. i live near ipswich . but my bumsteads are orginally from wisbeach then lancashire then wales then cornwall then dad moved to essex as a young man . not many of us about lol . ive known for a while there were bumsteads in ipswich. i really ought to make contact you never know could be related lol keep the great work up its really helped me
This is incredibly helpful, thank you!
Wow, you made it look so easy.
So very neat or tidy! Thank you!
Simply beautiful! I am going to try this!
Have fun!
Thank you
You're welcome
Its like your doing a Purl stitch with the green, then knit with the burnt orange.
Thank you for this concise and clear video! 💖
You are so welcome!
Lovely! I catch the float the same way you do on the first step, but not the second. Thank for this wonderful technique.
You are so welcome!
Thank you!
Absolutely brilliant! Thanks for sharing. Cheers from FL😺
Glad you enjoyed it!
wow, thanks! I am just learning colorwork and this is such a tidier method
Glad it was helpful!
Ooooooooo wonderful
Brilliant! Thank you so much!
Hi Nancy You're very welcome! thanks Gary
wauw that blanket and shirt in the back......im just a beginner, winging my first sweater. trying to learn. I got a loooooong way to go
Thank you so much! This was short, concise, and to the point. I've subscribed!
Glad it helped!
Patterns make our knitting lives so much easier. I started knitting the Aran cable sweater and it took me a lot of swatches to get the right size and the look from Rory Gilmore's Netflix videos. I broke it down by cable and reading lots of books on aran sweaters. I have the front panel almost finished and I must say it looks fab-u-lous, but not easy. Next I am going to purchase this pattern and knit it.
Thank you for this video! I have watched this video many many times and will need to many many more until I get it. 'm a continental knitter and wrapping my mind around this method is slow but I will succeed! I signed up for your Charlie Brown scarf class and have just completed the first line of the chart. Love learning new things!
Omg funny story. I figured this out by accident with my tail, like 3 weeks into learning how to knit, and I could never figure out how I did it 😅
Thank you this was so helpful ❤❤❤
Genius! Doing fair isle for the second time now and I hate having long floats and wondered if this was even possible. Thank you so much. Amazing work!
You are very welcome
This is how I do my floats. I was wondering if I was doing it wrong but apparently not :-) it’s so useful and neat
Great minds... - thanks
This is amazing! Thank you!
No worries
Thank you so much! My speed, abysmally slow as it is has improved greatly. I might yet finish this darn scarf by Christmas!!!!
You are so welcome!
Wonderful demonstration, I have not attempted colorwork yet as I did not like all the floats on the back. Subscribed, and look forward to seeing your other videos, and to trying this method of carrying the yarn.
Welcome! I hope you enjoy catching up on our other videos
Thank you!❤
You're welcome 😊
Thanks❤😊
You are very welcome
Lovely, thank you🥰
You’re welcome 😊
Obrigada
Very helpful video! Thank you!
You're welcome!
I would love to see you doing this technique but on a purl row. thanks!
it's out there somewhere - but I will do it again for you - keep watching
Good reminder. Thanks !
Thanks Nicole, Jo has been working on building our facebook and tiktok. She asked me for a little video for facebook and this is the result. It has really brought a whole new audience in and it has only been live for a couple of hours.
@@theknittingman6443 GREAT !
Unfortunately, I'm a continental knitter. Greetings from Germany.
I’m going to try that!
Hopefully it will work for you too
Thank you so much.
You're welcome!
Must use up a lot of yarn!
My only problem with catching floats is that sometimes the float catches show through to the front side. Thank you for this! :)
Hi Valorie, Yes the carrying yarn can show through, I think it depends on the yarn weight to needle width ratio. Thanks Gary
The green goes from front to back between the needles which was not mentioned. i need to hear the small details since when i just watch i do not always notice them.
I have done a new one whih I hope will be clearer thanks Gary
Can you please show how to do this knitting Continental? Thank you.
Sorry I only knit English but there are videos on you tube for Continental - Thank you for watching though
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Love it! Thank you very much. Silly question, how do i knit the purl side?
Hi I do demonstrate it somewhere in my videos I think it is in episode 2 or 3 Thanks Gary
Thanks for this video. I just subscribed and looking forward to seeing your videos. Can you use this method row after row? I am knitting a pattern called Alaska hat and towards the crown the darker yarn is floated behind a lighter yarn. I could use the ladder back method however this looks a bit easier. This dark behind lighter goes on for many rows.
Hi Michele yes you can use this method but the carrying yarn might show through depending on the needle widths and yarn weight. Thanks Gary
This is the Philosopher's wool technique of catching floats.
Thanks. Very clear. I suppose this method can be used to weave in ends. Right ?
Yes, correct
How would you carry the orange (dominant color) if there were a span of the green? Great video.
Hi Diane - in exactly the same way - thanks Gary
very good, but what about the same thing in purl stitch
This is a great technique! What about for the purl side? Looking into all sorts of approaches for a flat knit project I'm about to commence and so far Portuguese style would result in least tangled mess of yarn BUT I knit English style and fear my tension would be affected by switching to a style I've never really used... and I've only found the method of carrying floats on the purl side (as that's how in the round is knitted in that style as the stitch is simpler)
Hello we have loads more tutorials on UA-cam and Mrs Smith has a Tiktok called the knitting widow with more!
Great technique! If you were to switch colors in the middle of the row, is there something we'd need to know to switch positions of the yarn? And is the purl side done similarly?
Yes in one of my other videos I do a close up of my hands and the yarn does switch when I change colour, I also show the purling in another video and it's a bit different. Thank you
@@theknittingman6443 Thanks!
You have asked what we would like to see, and here I am popping in a year later with a question that recently came to mind. It's about stretch. As a suggestion, could you do a comparison between your no-float knitting and float knitting. For me, floats are not something I would like to continue with, and for socks, stretch is required. Once these socks are completed, I will be using your no-float method on the next pair, very exciting!
Hi - yes there is definitely less stretch when I use this method but I don't knit socks. If I did I would probably make sure that there is no tension at all on the carrying yarn. I hope this helps. Gary
Thank you very much. I will pay great attention to the carrying yarn. Socks are a small project I can learn by🌻 @@theknittingman6443
I’m new to color work so I wonder how this technique affects the fabric produced versus carrying floats. Is the fabric denser?
Hi Dana yes firmer Thanks Gary
Hello! I just found your channel and I have a question regarding the catching of the second color. Do you find that when you catch every other stitch with the contrast color that the contrast color is seen more easily on the front? For example if my main color is blue and I catch my yellow yarn every other stitch as you have shown it seems that the yellow is seen on the front of the work peeking through the blue. Do you find this?
Thank you for your podcasts!
So it's the same on both knit and Purl rows?
How do you carry colors in the loop for fair isle knitting while maintaining the stretchiness? And is there a way to carry colors with cables?
Yes you do lose some stretchiness but you need to keep the tension loose on the carrying colour .
Thank you for showing the technique. But it looks to me that on the right side, I can see tiny dots of green on the orange fabric. Why is that? Any way to avoid green to peek ?
I rather like the carrying colour grinning through although you wont see them once it is blocked. Yes you can use thicker yarn or thicker needles but then of course the finished fabric will have less drape.
I need to knit an aran sweater for my daughter without a pattern. Any suggestions or advice you can pass on to me, please do not hesitate to do so. I am going to start knitting the sweater in two weeks when I receive the DK merino yarn.
Hi when you say Aran do you mean cable because if so I m probably not the best person to ask because I havnt done if for years since I got into colourwork, thanks Gary
Could you show how to do this in continental? I’ve tried this for a couple of hours and had success twice.
Hello Judi Sorry I don't knit Continental, only English!. I suspect there will be someone on UA-cam who does. Sorry I can't help Gary
Thank you for sharing, I’ve been dragging my heels doing colour work as it’s always seemed so difficult. Do you do the same technique for the back side of the work too?😊
Hello we have a short on the pearlside x
Can you tell me what the video title is please.
And then in the next row what color are you gonna carry? Is the same process the whole project?
Hi Knitting Man, I'm starting on my first non-intarsia piece of colourwork and I was just wondering if/how you would do this with three colours? Thanks :))
Hi It's the same method (you carry both carrying yarns together) but the fabric can a bit thick and the yarns get in more tangles so I generally use intarsia if I want more than 2 colours in a row.
Thank you so much! I used the method and made my first colourwork vest - I get to gift it at the start of November :))
Can you show us how to do the back side plz thank you
Hello there is a pearl side short vide😊
If you catch all floats in two colour stranded knitting wouldn't that be Twined knitting?
Yes it would - thanks Gary
Does this work with 2 or three colors
I have done it with both 2 and 3 colours - but my yarn management is a bit messy and with 3 and I got tired of trying to untangle the mess of yarns - so I pretty much only use 2 now
How about the pearl side?
Hello there is a pearl side short on our channel many thanks jo
Does this only work with two colors?
It will work with 3 but the yarn management gets a bit tricky - nasty tangles!
What an I doing wrong? Mine keeps knitting the carry color?
I just don't see a good way to do this. I really don't like seeing the glimpses of the carried yarn between the stitches from the front. Also, working on the back of the fabric presents it's own set of challenges. I carry one color in each hand. This method would slow me down so much that I'd have a hard time continuing.
