Oh yes. I like this short. It took me straight to what I needed to know. Being an English knitter it is good to see a method that doesn't require me to learn Continental knitting and also doesn't get the yarns in a tangle. Thank you. Have subscribed.
The Mary Thomas that wrote one of the first classic knitting help books “ The Mary Thomas Knitting Book” 1972 calls this style weaving. The more traditional is the loop carrying method called stranding. The weaving method does not create yarn dominance so that is why it was an unknown for you. I use this method and realise your right handed purling method is easier than the two handed one I tried based on my 2 handed weaving method. As I found weaving on the purl rows 2 handed too difficult I resorted to knitting backwards on a purl row. Your video made me realise that for purling dropping and picking up the yarns with my preferred knitting right hand may be the way to go. Thank you for the clear demonstration.
Hi Jillian, I have that book somewhere I will dig it out, yes it is a bit slow purling this way but I have done it for years and I knit in the round mostly these days, Thanks very much Gary
I liked this episode. I like the purl float part the most, because I never have seen someone show how to do this before and I have watched a boatload of knitting tutorials from beginner to master level You Tubers. Keep on, you are doing great and I would love to see Jo! Thank you.
Oh thank you for knitting English style, I've been trying to do the continental to follow other teachers, but old dogs, new tricks and all that. It is so appreciated,
Thanks Elena - we have footage in the bag that we have already shot about my artwork. I will hopefully get an episode out soon about my pictures. Thanks Gary
Your video is the first that really clicked for me. I will use your technique from now on. I am now subscribing to your channel. I am sure I will learn more great tips and tricks.
This was the clearest explanations for carrying floats I have ever seen. In addition, most videos teach you how to carry floats when knitting, but not when purling. Before this video I did not even realize that you could carry the floats on the purl side of the fabric. This will really help my sock (heel flap and gussett) knitting. Thanks a lot.
Thank you! Thank you! I’m working on swatches for a color work blanket for my sister and your method of trapping the floats is perfect for an orderly and neat “wrong” side. Your instructions were very clear. Thank you again!
Thanks Gary.....this has been most helpful. I have saved this video so I can look back on it when I need to. Yes 10min shorts .......you're onto a winner there! Thank you
Hi, Mr and Mrs Smith. I like short parts on one subject, such as this ... but I love it when they are all processed into one long video (about 1 hour), so I can go on with my knitting project while watching it.
Thanks for sharing. I really like your method of catching floats. My basic instinct told me to do it that way too. in my sweaters. Sometimes though I became insecure because I see many knitters catching floats after 3-5 stitches. I often used their method in socks and it always turned out that the socks were difficult to put on.
Hi Gary! Love your waffle, however now we have the best of both worlds😉😊 - I have a form of dyslexia that interferes with me transferring the visual to the practical - however I never let it prevent me from getting there in the end, that’s the benefit of UA-cam it can be played over and over - thank you for the time you and Jo put into entertaining and instructing us 👍🧶👏🏼
inspired idea to have the shorts as specific little technique tutorials - it works really well alongside the longer episodes especially for quick reference - thank you for all your work and hope you are enjoying filming - best wishes to you both
This the first time I’ve ever left a comment on a UA-cam video, I but had to leave this message for you because I want to say a massive thank you to you for solving my problem with floats. I’ve watched so many clips on this subject I started to get cross eyed and bogged down with far too much unnecessary information. It wasn’t until I came across one of your beautiful blanket patterns on Etsy, that I decided to check you out on UA-cam, and low and behold you solved my float problem in one of your short clips. I was starting to get so frustrated that I almost gave up, but thanks to you I will go ahead with my first project which will be a very simple 2 coloured vest. I’ve subscribed to your UA-cam channel and look forward in anticipation to seeing more of your stunning work and learning from you too Thank you once again for lovely tutorial. 🎉
Hi KM & Mrs KM! I love your videos. Please carry on just as you’ve begun. I always carried my floats every stitch too until I heard people say I should only catch them every 3rd or 4th stitch; then they added that the catches should be changed up so as not to create a line/run on the right side. Well, it just messes me up to try to think what I did the previous row and how to stagger the catches on the current row - so perhaps I’ll go back to what you say you’ve always done. Thanks!
G’day Gary, you’re on a winner, with the new shorts 🩳 podcasts and viewers/knit learners will get a lot of benefit out of your podcasts. Simple to understand thank you for no complication explanations. 🇦🇺
Thank you SO much - I have watched several videos on catching floats, and got more confused each time. 😵💫 And nobody else showed how to purl and catch floats, so double thank you. As a relative beginner, I'm attempting a Harry Potter jumper for my granddaughter, and at the rate I was going she would have outgrown it long before it was finished. So here I go, wish me luck 😏
I've tried SO many different ways of stranded knitting. Both yarns in one hand (or the other), one yarn in each hand, dropping yarn i'm not using, ring tension gadgets. This method is the ONLY one i've found that works and doesn't create color dominance. Thank you!
For those who are new to this: there are some different ways you can do it. My way is different from Gary's. I use two hands: the yarn I knit with is in my right hand (I knit 'throwing'), the other yarn in my left hand. Of course the result is the same, it's just another way of doing it ...
@@ingeleonora-denouden6222 There are lots of videos showing a range of two handed methods. I like this one because I don't have to learn how to do that.
Yes, I so appreciate this short. I'm fairly new to colorwork knitting and am currently working a 3-color design which had extremely long floats and looked horrible on the inside. I frogged it and will be reknitting it but was looking for a good method to work in those long floats. Thank you!!!
I bean waching Your Tube and best ..I beginner kniter aswell can't read knitting pattern or crochet...I have knit dishcloths mats for local cafe near me. Now I have bean knitting myself shawl blanket
Hello Gary and Jo. I do like the short videos with the knitting lesson that will not to be more easily lost in a longer video. I am glad to see you wearing one of your fair isle vest sweaters. It looks great. I also like that bluesy music number on this short video. I do not know who is the singer or band. Everyone have a great week and weekend coming soon.
I really liked this "How To" video, you made it seem quite easy with a little practice. I will admit I loved the picture behind you in that video. I would love to have that on the back of a cardi. Thank you so much for sharing. You are a master. I do think I would have to have a glass of wine to fully enjoy the music.
Wow wow wow. I’ve only done one color work sweater. The second sweater I tried to do I never could get the tension right in the colorwork. I’ve tried three times to knit the same sweater your way seems amazing to me. I’m now going to have to try for sure to knit another colorwork sweater, thank you so much.
Definitely love the shorter videos. The intro is lovely - the stack of books was great - I plan to look them up. Love that you were wearing your vest too.
Thank you you are right sometimes you just need to find a solution for a problem or just a new technique to learn I will keep looking forward to your shorts
Great idea..... i have my cat pattern started and came on to look through for this exact thing! great timing...look forward to seeing more of them. dont always have an hour so shorts are a added bonus
I just can say thank you so much!! This method is so easy. I was struggling with other techniques but this is definitely for me. Can’t wait to watch more videos of your channel. 😊
thanks for the video dedicated to this float trap method - now i have to try to convert it to continental - i like your idea to produce short tutorials - thank you for sharing your time and knowledge
This is a great idea Gary! I woke up this morning, thinking about trying your ribbing technique with colourwork and couldn't remember which video. Then I was thinking, I'll just watch them all again and make my own index. Maybe I won't have to do that if you show the ribbing. 😀
Hi Catherine, That's great, it justifies what i am doing, I will extract all the how tos and make little shorts so you won't need to go looking. Thanks Gary
Thanks so much! I haven't seen your longer episodes yet, but these shorts are wonderful introductions or can be used to expand one's range of techniques to do a similar thing. Greetings from Michigan, USA!
Brilliant! This is absolutely wonderful and I can't wait to try your techniques on my next stranded colorwork projects. Thank you so much for sharing this.
Thank you so much for this video! I have found this method to be working wonderfully for me and I am now looking forward to knitting another cardigan that is knit flat. So appreciate your videos and look forward to them coming out!
Enjoyed this short episode. I am happy to leave floats over 5 stitches when knitting for adults. However, I can see myself using your method for children's items. I'm with you. I don't like continental knitting and knew there had to be some technique that could work well!
BRILLIANT! THANK GOODNESS I FOUND YOU AND YOUR NO NONSENSE TEACHING APPROACH!!! 🥰
