So happy I’ve found your channel. I love everything about it. Your presentation. Your talent. Your straightforward calm manner. Your chart posters are INCREDIBLE!!!
It says Kiss on Atlas's (did I get that right) blanket. My maiden name was Kiss. My father Laszlo was born in Hungary. Forgive my tangent if Kiss is for something else. Lol. Beautiful blanket!! Thank you, Gary and Jo. And now I get why some videos are small on my phone! (Thanks for explaining that, too!)
That yarn carrying technique is a game changer for me. A world of possibilities just burst open! Thank you for sharing your life with us- I’m awestruck at how rich and beautiful is your knitting, painting, filming- headed to your Etsy shop next because I can’t get those prints out of my head. So happy I chanced on your channel- lucky me!! ❤
I watch loads of knitting podcasts- I might venture to say you might be my favorite. Your talents are, on many levels, so impressive and attractive. Your life is so rich in relationships. Thank you so much.
Hi Gary, I happened upon you podcast today. In June I spent 3 weeks in Cornwall visiting family! We stayed in Breage mostly and Perranporth with family. I love your videos and the Polar Bear gets my vote!a
I ran across your video on Facebook, so I looked to see if you were on UA-cam. Yay, you are! I can see your videos better on my PC. Love the work you showed in the background. I certainly will try your method of knitting without floats. Now I just have to think of some picture to knit. Thanks for the info.
Lovely to see your beautiful grandchildren (I recognized Doris right away from her blanket photos) and love the Cornwall shots as well. This all felt so calm and soothing. Would love to see some pictures of the knitting you did for your girls when they were little.
Oh thank you! I know that their are a couple of kids jumpers around somewhere but I don't know where they are at present, when they come to light I will.
I read “Travels with my aunt” last year. 😄I am an avid reader but I had never read any any Graham Green so I am trying to fix that now. I loved your little video showing how you carry floats and I thought it was so clear and simple. Wonderful. But it is great that you decided to re-film it for those who may not have been able to appreciate it.Thank you.
I half expected the camera to pan out showing you in the corner playing on a piano a la Johnnie Fingers. Thank you for another lovely video, I really enjoy watching your informal style so much, it really does feel like a friend sharing what they know, explaining how to do something, with different options offered along the way with a bit of chitty chat and banter.
Thanks Ericka, the kids thought I was waffling on a bit on this episode so it's good to have a different opinion, they've heard all my jokes before though. Talking of Johnny Fingers we saw Bob Geldof when we went to Faversham to visit the Yarn Dispensary, just walking around the town he lives there apparently. I have already started episode 3 which is a bit more instructional so should please the kids.
You are so talented and I’m in awe of your sublime skills. You are truly an artist. I have been knitting since my Nan taught me at age 5 and I remember loving it straight away - as if that craft was waiting for me to find it! This was over 50 years ago now but I was in the non internet age the same as you where you had to get information from the library or work it out yourself! It certainly is a lot easier now. Thank you for posting and I may get the courage up to knit one of your beautiful designs. Sue from New Zealand
I agree: there is no wrong way (of knitting). That was one of the first things I found out. I learned a way of knitting at school, but that way did not feel right to me. One of my mother's friends was a crafts teacher (not at my school) and she told me: if you do not like it this way, you just try another way! (it was especially about how to hold the needles). Since then I like/love knitting.
Thanks Liz That's a lovely thought. If you've seen my artwork you'll know that I am very big on angels. Mrs Smith wanted to re-do that clip but I said no leave it in it adds a sense something.
Saw a pattern years ago that was intarsia in the round with 2 balls. Written directions are so awkward: knit sock body MC (main color) to CC (contrasting color) design. Knit across CC. Drop yarn. Go back and to MC yarn and purl back around on the inside to meet up with dangling CC. Twist MC and CC. Purl back across CC design and let the CC dangle. Go back to dangling MC and knit around to CC. Twist the yarns and knit CC across design. It works. If you’d want to do it…. Thank you Knitting Man!! I love the videos.
You can do intarsia with Rick Mondragon sliding loop method. So you knit your color, carrying your strand ( magic loop) finish the row of color, then instead of turning and purling you next backwards to the right, then set up the sliding loop on the next row. I’ve a beautiful image of it and instructions I’ll send your way ❤
I love your podcast even if I don't understand every word. I knit Scandinavian way. Will you show how to carry the yarn with that technic? The purl way also plz Will you show how to knit with 3 different colors? I'm looking forward to an episod with your crochetting brother. Thank you and Mrs Smith for your very informative and funny podcast😁 Maggie in Sweden
Thank you, thank you. I wish I had found your channel sooner. This is a game changer for me. I’ve tried teaching myself various ways of knitting…Norweigan, Continnental to be able to knit stranded coulourwork. I am a UK knitter and all of those methods were epic failures and really put me off. Your method is simple and easy to follow. So now on to the sweater I’ve been wanting to challenge myself with. 🥰
thank you for describing the intarsia vs fair isle techniques! Yes please talk about sock darning that would be great - I do not use superwash yarn so I have a basket of socks needing darning! I love hearing your stories... the how you learned to knit story is wonderful!! your filming is great I never noticed the glasses or other issues, I think its all great thank you both for taking the time to podcast for us!
Just found your video. Thankyou for showing how to carry the yarn. I've always done floats. Been knitting & crocheting for about 65 yrs. From Australia, so it's nice to see British style terminology.
Great to see the yarn carry technique - so easy! I've been doing this (more by luck than judgement!) whilst knitting a tube scarf in 2 colours with stripes; good to have the verification. Yes please to seeing the purl version. :)
Oh, my goodness, trying to choose between the Tiger and the Polar Bear is impossible, both are so cool. I love your technique videos and your yarn travels as well. What a knitting journey you have been on, thanks for sharing it with us. Cheers, Barbara
I've knitted intarsia in the round (only once just to understand it. I actually kind of hate intarsia.) I suggest looking it up, because I'm not sure I remember fully. But I knit around to beginning of row, then did a wrap and turn to work back. As I said, I'm very fuzzy about particulars!
Hi yes I know what you mean, it is more like knitting flat because of having to knit the wrong side in purl. I tried it once but couldn't get on with it either. Thanks very much Gary
Great episode! Love the mix of content sections. Yay - I can now do that float carrying thanks to your video! Will look forward to the purl version to understand that too. Thank you to all of you for making a beautiful podcast. An idea - Your colour baskets are fab - would be interesting at some time in the future to hear a bit about your colour choices and blending.
I love your technique of carry the yarn across every row. I’m going to give it a try. I use a similar technique of carrying yarn but keep one yarn in my left hand and one in the right.
Wow Gary your work, designs and colour choices and wonderful! I too catch my floats the same way though hadn't thought of catching every stitch. Thank you for sharing. Irena
Excellent both! I feel like I'm on the end of a conversation with an old friend...especially with talk of Sarfend 🤣. Looking forward to the next instalment! Thoroughly entertaining!
I think i am going to learn a lot from you. Thank you so much for the yarn carrying technique. I enjoyed your podcast very much and look forward to more. The beach was lovely and any shots of babies and kiddos is always a treat. 😊
Hi! Love your podcast .Thanks for redoing the carrying of the floats part again. It looks so easy when you do it! I’ve been knitting for 40 odd years and fair isle just wasn’t in the cards for me because even though I tried many many times it would always come out wrong . I’m going to try your way of catching the floats and if I can’t get it then I think it just wasn’t for me . Your patterns are so beautiful!! If I can master your technique with the floats I would love to get to do your pattern with the birds on it. Keep your fingers crossed for me. I can’t wait for your next episode with the steeking 👍😊
Thank you so much for sharing your method for color work! What a game changer for me ❤ There is a sweater i have been wanting to make but it has very long floats with some places of the occasional one or 2 stitches in the co trast color ( it's a stary night picture) so it has put me off to starting, i am so excited now to make it as soon as my Christmas knitting is completed. I love your vidios and am so happy to have found them. Thank you!
Another great episode. I have been using your technique on my Bluebird blanket , I really like it. I have been hoping that you would produce a chart for the polar bear, because I love it so much. Although the tiger would be fabulous too! I went to a workshop with Kaffe Fasset at Rowan headquarters in the ‘90’s, he was lovely and so inspirational.
Thanks Nicola as far as I know you are only the 4th person to start knitting my bluebird blanket so I would love to see your progress. That's 2 for the bear. Yes I imagine he is a lovely man.
Thanks so much! I have done a how to purl with no floats in episode 3 of The Knitting Man podcasts. We are on episode 6 so you have some catching up to do.
Love the new episode!😊👍❤️The music at the beginning and end is beautiful… really enjoyed listening to that while looking at your yarn stash! I love your approach to knitting too, that it should be fun and creative and relaxing, without worrying that you are following all the “rules”. I always felt bad that I wasn’t holding my yarn correctly…never could manage to wrap it around my fingers on both hands, but it comes out looking all right, so I try not to worry about that anymore. 😊Looking forward to the next episode!
Hi Linda my son in law George recorded some piano for us. Yes I think that you should knit how you feel comfortable and that patterns are just a guide, I love what you did with my bluebird pattern where you converted the pattern. The aim of what I am doing is the give people the right to not worry about their knitting. Thank you
You told your mother taught you that way of knitting in yarn ends, and then you started using it too for the floats at the back. I think it is a traditional way of doing so. Maybe not for Fair Isle patterns, they never have long floats. Anyway: I know about it. I use it in Norwegian patterns, but only when the float is over 7 stitches long. And I do not 'catch' the floating yarn every other stitch, only one in every three stitches. Now I see (from you) how nice it looks at the backside, I think of starting knitting a pattern with larger parts in one colour, in the same way you do it. Of course I could buy one of your patterns ... Or I make my own ...
I really look forward to your new videos! I have been knitting a long time however your explanation of carrying the yarn had me wowing out loud! I also knit only in the round however would love to see your purl version as well. Thank you and please keep your videos coming! My regards to camera woman, Mrs. Smith.
You are so welcome! There is another option where you use a darning needle to darn back to the start of the intarsia areabut this would give you a trple thickness of yarn across your motif which might be a bit bulky. Thanks for your question it was an interesting on to try to answer.
i am looking forward to trying the 'no float' skill. thank you for sharing. it a great idea for using more than one colour in a blanket. with no nasty loops across the back it opens up more choices :) i would like to see you do it in purl ways also to complete the story. i loved seeing the rocks at the coast ..10.30 ish)..they looked like a purple quilt your designs are lovely.
Thank you so much for another great episode. Looking forward to doing some colour work as soon as my current project is finished. Must try your float technique, would love to get the back of the knitting so tidy and nice. And yes, I would love to see how you do the purling as well.
Dear Mr. Smith, Thank you again for your wonderful podcast. I do have one question for you. For your v-neck jumpers, do you use a pattern or just make one up? Also, do you steek the arm and neck openings?
I am happy to answer any questions. Yes I do make the pattern up as I go along but I am currently working on my ultimate vest pattern in 4 sizes so that I can add my surface design. I sometimes steek but lately I have been knitting an integrated rib which requires minimal finishing. Thanks for your question Gary
Hello Gary ! Thanks for the intarsia in the round problem that I was trying to figure out . I love to do Kaffe Fassett designs but as he uses many colours at a time, he often uses both Fairisle and Intarsia simultaneously and knits FLAT ( I which I hate ...) I was trying to wrap my head around on how to knit them in the round : I got my answer , guess it's a no go ....😞 Wonder if these DVd / videos you were talking about are still to be found in England ?( charities or car boot sales?) Regarding carrying the yarn, I do still another trick, as I knit with both hands, one ball on each side. A big 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 From France 🇫🇷
Just wondering about yarn management; your yarns appeared to be wrapping around each other when you were knitting on the beach. Could you talk about this? Many thanks for another great podcast.
I have a question please: I just started getting fair isle knitting and want to Al know how you do the Pearl side of the float side. Do you have a video about this?
Hi Gary, another nice video. I have a question. knit with two colors and catch the float around the stitch, do you keep in mind that you are not doing this around the same stitch from the previous row? Thanks Laura
Hello, from California. I just discovered your videos. I haven’t watched your other videos yet, BUT…I would like to see purl version on of your technique to hide floats. I like to purl in the round.
Hi there, just watched your episode for green and orange sample for carrying the coloured yarn knit wise. Could you please show the method for how to carry the yarn through purl wise if that’s ok. Would be grateful. Thank you.
Hi Marina, the moth pattern is currently only available as a poster print from my etsy shop. Here is the link: www.etsy.com/uk/shop/PentimentoPrints Thanks Gary
Big difference between you and me: you are an artist who knits British style, I am just a continental knitter. It is extremely difficult for me to carry the yarn! 😭
I don't know the answer but I am sure there must be a way. If I had the time I would research, experiment and work it out for you, maybe I will someday.
All my patterns could be knitted flat. It's just more difficult. I might talk about why this is more difficult in my next set of Q&As. Thanks for your question.
@@sheilamccart8800 Hi I have only been selling patterns for a few months. In episode 4 I go through what is available from where. Yes at present only the bluebird blanket is on Ravelry, the others are only currently available as printed poster from my etsy shop. Yes they are knitting charts as well but can just be framed as well.
So happy I’ve found your channel. I love everything about it. Your presentation. Your talent. Your straightforward calm manner. Your chart posters are INCREDIBLE!!!
Thanks Gail
It says Kiss on Atlas's (did I get that right) blanket. My maiden name was Kiss. My father Laszlo was born in Hungary.

Hi Gary, I happened upon you podcast today. In June I spent 3 weeks in Cornwall visiting family! We stayed in Breage mostly and Perranporth with family. I love your videos and the Polar Bear gets my vote!a

Mrs. Smith's "wool allergy?" Bummer...but more wool for Mr. Smith and the babies. 🙂 That's a winner.

Hi Inge so true!
At some point in the video the sun was shining in, and I must say it was rather ethereal looking. For a bit you became the "Knitting Angel" 😉
Thanks Liz That's a lovely thought. If you've seen my artwork you'll know that I am very big on angels. Mrs Smith wanted to re-do that clip but I said no leave it in it adds a sense something.

Thanks yes I will definitely be talking about sock darning in future as well as doing a new intarsia project. Gary
Just found your video. Thankyou for showing how to carry the yarn. I've always done floats. Been knitting & crocheting for about 65 yrs. From Australia, so it's nice to see British style terminology.
hello Rose in Australia and welcome x
Could you please tell me where it shows carrying the yarn, I can't seem to find it, thank you
Really enjoyed your video with how you carry yarns. It seems to make a great deal of sense to do it that way. Thank you 😊
Hi Tracey .Glad it helped! Gary
@theknittingman6443 hi Garry I am trying to find where you show how to carry the yarn but I can't seem to find it. Love your beautiful work 😊
Thank you! I'm really enjoying your channel

Hi - the tiger poster is being given away for free with all orders over £20 from from our etsy shop this week. Thanks Gary
Great to see the yarn carry technique - so easy! I've been doing this (more by luck than judgement!) whilst knitting a tube scarf in 2 colours with stripes; good to have the verification. Yes please to seeing the purl version. :)
Thanks Steph, I will put it on next week's podcast
Please do show carrying on the pearl stitch.
Hello Dianne It is shown in the Knitting man's shorts Episode 1 I think on UA-cam. Thanks Gary

Hi Barbara by episode 5 we settle on 2 new projects a fairisle vest with no pattern and a hare baby blanket. Keep watching. Thanks Gary

Thanks for the tip! I had not heard of that podcast!
Very enjoyable. I would love to see the Purl floats. 😊

Hi Darlene, Thank you so much!
Love your knitting. Welcome to UA-cam. I don't always follow patterns, too. :}
Thank you for watching, I am just filming ep. 6 today. Yes that's the best way. Gary
I love your technique of carry the yarn across every row. I’m going to give it a try. I use a similar technique of carrying yarn but keep one yarn in my left hand and one in the right.
You are so welcome! I think carrying yarn in 2 hands might be quicker
Wow Gary your work, designs and colour choices and wonderful! I too catch my floats the same way though hadn't thought of catching every stitch. Thank you for sharing. Irena

Loved seeing your yarn carrying technique, it looks so neat on the back. I will definitely give it a try…..thank you.

Thank you
Yes please show us the purling method.
Hi Debbie you will find the purling how to in episode 3. Thank you
You told your mother taught you that way of knitting in yarn ends, and then you started using it too for the floats at the back.
Hi Inge so glad you are enjoying the Podcast.
I really look forward to your new videos! I have been knitting a long time however your explanation of carrying the yarn had me wowing out loud! I also knit only in the round however would love to see your purl version as well. Thank you and please keep your videos coming! My regards to camera woman, Mrs. Smith.
Hi Ency, Nice to here from you on here. Thanks for your support and we will
Thankyou very enlightening ... I come from Essex to I have very good friends from Leigh
Hi Viv I am from Leigh I might know them!
Thank you so much! Now that you’ve explained it more I will definitely be using the Swiss darning method!
Thanks Diane yes it works well for blankets. I will film no floats when purling version for next week.
Thank you so much for another great episode. Looking forward to doing some colour work as soon as my current project is finished. Must try your float technique, would love to get the back of the knitting so tidy and nice. And yes, I would love to see how you do the purling as well.
Thanks Ulla I will film that part tomorrow to get ahead a little bit.
The polar bear!
Hi Carolyn thanks for that, however the discussion moves on in episodes 3 and 4, then in ep. 5 I decide what the new project will be. Gary
Love your videos and work....I knit like this but continental. Someone called it tucking. Not sure that is a real term but it sounds good.
Hi Eveline, Thanks for the info! I like the sound of tucking, Gary
Hi yes I said DVD but they were VHS video tapes, I imagine they could be found on ebay, Thanks Gary
Thanks for the technique! Would love to see the purl version
Thanks Vicky I have just recorded it for next weeks podcast
Love your videos. How do you do the striped lines on the cuff in different colours? Is there a video on this?
Yes! I think I called it how to knit corrugated rib.
Thank you very much! @@theknittingman6443
Yes will you show how to in mix two threads in purling. Would be nice tot see that
And indeed its feeling for me as if we sit in a room together and have a nice talk sometimes I had to laugh
Hi Jeanine yes I will do thanks
Just wondering about yarn management; your yarns appeared to be wrapping around each other when you were knitting on the beach. Could you talk about this? Many thanks for another great podcast.
Hi Jane yes I have a a couple of techniques that I use. I will add it to a show. Thank you
Thank you.
You're welcome!
I have a question please: I just started getting fair isle knitting and want to Al know how you do the Pearl side of the float side. Do you have a video about this?
Hi yes it is in one of the videos probably ep 3 I think - thanks Gary
Hi Gary, another nice video. I have a question. knit with two colors and catch the float around the stitch, do you keep in mind that you are not doing this around the same stitch from the previous row? Thanks Laura
Thanks Laura, no I don't mind if they line up with the previous row, Gary
@@theknittingman6443 ok, thanks Gary!
Please show how you carry the yarn when purling.
Hi Mary, yes that tutorial is available to watch in episode 3, I hope you enjoy the newer episodes as well. Thanks Gary
Hello, from California. I just discovered your videos. I haven’t watched your other videos yet, BUT…I would like to see purl version on of your technique to hide floats. I like to purl in the round.
Welcome! We have a short on the purl side x
I've just found your channel! Fabulous stuff!! Where do you get your patterns please? 😊
Glad you like them! They are mine - some available on Ravelry and others in my etsy shop. The link is in my bio. Thank you.
@@theknittingman6443 thank you!
Hi there, just watched your episode for green and orange sample for carrying the coloured yarn knit wise. Could you please show the method for how to carry the yarn through purl wise if that’s ok. Would be grateful. Thank you.
Hi Sita I think that's in our Knitting man shorts .episode 1 Thanks Jo
@@theknittingman6443 ok thank you so much I will watch it. Kind regards.
I have just discovered you and you have made colourwork seem less terrifying! What is your Etsy store name?
Hi Jacqueline It's pentimento Prints, here is my linktree linktr.ee/garyraysmith
Thanks so much Gary
@@theknittingman6443 PS - your work is so, so inspiring!!!
Does this method interfere with the stretch of the finished fabric? I would imagine this creates a very dense fabric.
Yes depending on how much tension you put on the carrying colour
Thank you Mrs. Smith!! The sea reminded me of home. I grew up in Herne Bay by the sea. Your grandkids are adorable!!
Hi Sue Thanks so much, we hope you also enjoy the other 6 videos we have on youtube. Gary and Jo
A great pod cast. Where Can I purchase your patterns ? I would like to try the moth pattern .
Hi Marina, the moth pattern is currently only available as a poster print from my etsy shop. Here is the link:

Thanks Gary
Oh my lord... the Fenchurch St line... always ends up with the Upper Crust! 🤣
.
Big difference between you and me: you are an artist who knits British style, I am just a continental knitter. It is extremely difficult for me to carry the yarn! 😭
I don't know the answer but I am sure there must be a way. If I had the time I would research, experiment and work it out for you, maybe I will someday.
I vote for the polar bear
Thank you
Hi, which part of Essex did you live. I love in Dagenham, Essex. Hope you don't mind me asking.
Hi Susan I might wear my Made in Dagenham t-shirt in my next video. I have actually got 2 of them. Barking/Dagenham then Hornchurch then Leigh-on-sea
so Fairisle is repetitive and would be able to take out with me but how are you not following your grid?
Hi Judy, I am doing a Q & A film today I will add your question. Thanks Gary
Can you add your Etsy link?
Hi - it should be on my linktree here;
linktr.ee/garyraysmith
Thanks Gary
Blanket pattern without the steeking please 😊
All my patterns could be knitted flat. It's just more difficult. I might talk about why this is more difficult in my next set of Q&As. Thanks for your question.
@@theknittingman6443
I only saw one pattern on Ravelry, so are your posters pattens as well?
@@sheilamccart8800 Hi I have only been selling patterns for a few months. In episode 4 I go through what is available from where. Yes at present only the bluebird blanket is on Ravelry, the others are only currently available as printed poster from my etsy shop. Yes they are knitting charts as well but can just be framed as well.
Oh I went to a talk given by Kaffe in the Chelsea medic garden and I didn't speak to him either
Yes when I think about it now I think know silly. Glad I am not the only one though
