7. SAAB 9-3 2.0T Aero Review, mildly modified, is this my best daily ever?

  • In my first video for 2012, we take a drive out in my #Daily, a 2003 SAAB 9-3 2.0T Aero, purchased 4 years ago and my longest stint at vehicle ownership, ever! So why has a car that has received nothing more the ridicule (Pistonheads shed of the month) and moderate praise from auto journalists for years, been such a hit with a petrolhead lifer!?

It's a curious thing about Saabs. If you're not into them, just taking one for a test drive will probably not change your mind. However, live with one for a bit longer and you can easily get hooked. They are so understated that they seem dull, but as you get familiar with them it all starts to make sense.

Saabs are the bargain of the century at the moment. I intend to buy myself a sorted one in the near future.I have owned two Saab 9-5's before and absolutely loved them.

ive have 8 Saabs and have been looking for the perfect one for a year, and found a 2005 93 convertible 2.0 t , and realized that what we used to call NG Saabs are now the OGS, this car has options and little things I don't even have on my new car...66k and it delivered that old feeling again.

Why do people keep going on about Saab 9-3's being 'based on Vauxhall Vectras.' There is very little in common, particularly the engine which was highly modified and engineered by Saab and is a different animal to the EcoTec Vauxhall unit. Likewise, only limited sections of the chassis were common between the two, and of course if you look at the body and the inside you aren't going to see anything that screams ' Vectra.'

Don`t forget Jimbo, all 9-3 Aero`s from 2003 come with Saab`s "ReAxs" 4 wheel steer system, hence you can chuck them about & get away with it! With the grunt in mind, Saab designed this system to not only help in the bends, but to combat torque steer, which it does brilliantly. I have 2 Aero`s, a 56 plate convertible & a 57 plate TTiD saloon. The TTiD has been upgraded by Abbott Racing.....480nm torque.... Nuff said. Subbed.

I bought my 2006 2.0t Aero 10 years ago. Cost me £3k (one prev owner and 56k on the clock). It was a bargain because everyone was paranoid about parts in the future. 10 years on, I now have wife, two kids, dog, Audi A6 and Range Rover L405. We don't need 3 cars, but I will NEVER get rid of the Saab! This video sums the experience up really well. I'm about to refurb the alloys and get some detailing done to bring it up to former glory. Now done 120k miles. Here's to the next 120k.. 🍻

When I hop from my modern Volvo to the Saab, I prefer the Saab. A lot of the "quirks" are actually really well thought out from a driving, safety and other standpoints.
The controls are far more intuitive, less vague and better positioned so you don't lose concentration on the road. The Volvo with a low slung cluster of buttons is a pain.
The engine although based on a GM unit has been completely overhauled and reinforced, you could not drop the equivalent GM unit (Z20 I believe) in without it blowing up.
Though the 6 speed box isnt too desirable IMO, the 5 speed was far more reliable.
The suspension, ride height and even wheel base are all different with additional passive rear steer making it more stable in tight or fast turns. AKA the moose swerve.
The only bits I really ever had fail on the Saab usually had a GM logo stamped on them. Go figure.
Saab had its own electrics which also added to the cost and complexity.
And most car dealers say it has the most comfortable seats of any car, which I am inclined to agree short of some long wheel base exec saloon.

I love my 06 9-3 Aero, I too had to have the clutch done on mine which wasn't the cheapest job but luckily that was covered under dealership warranty. I could've gotten a BMW, Merc, Audi or something of that nature, but I wanted something different and Saabs provide that. Also, from what I can tell mine seems like a fairly honest car mechanically.

Had a 55 plate Aero for coming up 4 1/2 years now, best car I've had by a country mile and I've had some nice ones, I wouldn't change it for anything other than maybe a 95, just a shame the road tax on those and later 9-3s are so expensive, routine maintenance and a bit of mechanical sympathy and it should be reliable, mines on 92k hopefully get the same again, nice video and values have crept up a but in the last couple of years

Nice Saab! Saw this video pop-up on my home screen. I am just wondering, like some other Saab enthausiasts in the Netherlands: why are the Saabs (and other older cars perhaps) worth so less? Is it because of taxes or environment laws? Some dude posted that at his local scrapyard in the UK like 10+ Saabs went through a shredder within a week. Some people in The Netherlands even go to the UK because there are lots of Saabs on the scrapyards with all the (rare) parts on it. Just wondering :)
Nice to see that you already have it for 4 years! I stumbled upon my own Saab in about the same way. I was not looking for it, but it seemed a great deal and then I also found out the strength of the turbo engines (you can often find them with 350000+ km! My 2001 Saab 9-3 convertible 150 HP can be chipped with stock internals (everything is fit for stage 1) to 230 HP and 350 Nm and absolutely fell in love with it.

My problem I have before I get myself another Saab is that I will have to sell my current car (Alfa Romeo 159ti Sportwagon 2.0 jtdm). A joy to drive, stunning looks and quite practical as well! I might hang onto it for a bit longer, as the prices for the Alfa seem to be rising. You mention the lack of rattles and squeaks despite highish mileage - the Alfa is the same - well put together, and a very nice interior. So, it's going to be tough to let go of the Alfa.

I enjoyed a video from someone who "gets" Saabs. In the dim past I have owned two 900s, but now I have a '99 Viggen project car garaged, and use a 2011 9-3 as a daily driver, which also has a 6 speed manual transmission. Since the car has so little value, if I had an accident, the insurance company would total it. I simply do not know what I would do then, for there are no other cars out there that I might want to drive. I could relatively easily finish the Viggen, but wouldn't want to use it as a daily. I could possibly try to find a drivable 2005 Golf R to restore, or better yet another manual 9-3😁

Interior on my ‘08 a bit creaky here and there but I love the dash layout and the air vents are a work of art. Paint is thin and chips very easily. Overall, a good, enjoyable, “different” car.
