I love that Salt spent the beginning of this run bantering about 3-D printers with chat, and then with each major hurdle he gets more focused in. It really shows the culture of speedruns, a lot of monotony and then suddenly, The Run.
He would probably have to put out a 5h 22min video explaining the complete history of a 2.5 decade old challenge in as much detail as humanly possible while still keeping it as entertaining and understandable as possible to beat him. or something like that idk i just made that up
This is a terrific breakdown, but shoutout to Bald Bull 1. All too often, I see high level play and think "oh wow, that was clean" only for the streamer to sigh and grumble, and I don't have the context to understand what went wrong. This vid broke down the AI ahead of time, but then also showed the AI choices with "good" or "bad" overlaid on the video. That gave me all the context I needed to go "oh, yeah, he got screwed by RNG" and be right there with Salt. Great editing work!
As a side tangent, it's so cool to me that all the graphs here are a very good example of the Central Limit Theorem. Even tho a lot of the individual cases have weird probabilities and oddly-shaped graphs, when you add all of them up, they pretty quickly turn into that classic S-shaped normal distribution

I really want to highlight how much better this probability analysis is than the really common "just multiply a bunch of numbers together" approach that gives impressively massive, meaningless values. It's not just more accurate - it allows visualisations like your final slide down to "what does a 1 in a million run look like" at the end. You even get to sense-check your estimate by comparing to Salt's run-count, and they're very reasonably comparable when you add in the element of human execution. I really love this, and want to give you a big pat on the back to encourage more of it.
It's incredibly impressive that the video title says world record explained but the script and delivery had me on the edge of my seat near the end to see if Salt would pull it off, despite the entire video being an explanation of him pulling it off. Excellent video.

This is the first Punch Out video where I could actually hear Super Macho Man's audio cue. My ear was always searching for a different start sound, instead of an end sound, but after you explained it I could hear it if I focused.
Thanks for the explanation of Macho Man's sound cue at 52:15; now that I know what I'm listening for, I can just about make it out. Definitely not something I'd use while playing a video game, though; Salt's ears are much better tuned to that sound than mine.
I somehow only found your channel recently bismuth and I'm so glad I did. As someone who loves deep dives into anything, I found your channel to be top-tier quality hands down.
