    Hi Dani I received my new Oncidium Shari Baby Sweet Fragrance today I watched your video to repot it’s beautiful an huge with a bloom spike I had to repot it was so top heavy an roots were coming out from the bottom an top I checked it carefully for everything and it appeared
    to be in great shape so I used your method to pot it and it got a good drink and it’s in its place waiting for the spike to open I had seen yours and loved it. Thank you for teaching new orchid lovers how to take care of them. We enjoy your videos !

    Lovely helpful video and no, I never noticed the noise until you mentioned it! I bought an orchid which wasn’t in flower from my local garden centre in the winter time. They were selling them off so, I like a surprise and after 6 months or so, it bloomed. It’s a yellow mottled brown Oncidium. Being used to only the common orchids, it was a lovely surprise. Thank you. The English Lady xx

    Hi ... altho your video is 5 years old, it came in very handy, as I was gifted with a baby oncidium about 3 months ago, and it is growing by leaps and bounds. I was worried about the watering - if I was overdoing it, especially as I live in the tropics. I do soak my oncidium once a week for about 10 - 15 minutes, and it seems to love it. The main psuedo-bulb has ridges , but the new one is quite smooth, and the leaves are a lovely green and straight. As we are approaching the dry season (drought), I will need to observe how often to water. My media: bark chips and sphagnum moss. Shaded sunlight. A very holy plastic pot. Good root system.

    Hi! I was very impressed with your video! I have lots of phal that grow up really well. They are exposed to the sun from midday until sunset and they just keep blossoming and blossoming. Differently the I have had huge problems with cambria, one died and i got the second one and she does not seem to be any better though. I was told they need less water than the phal and i so i started watering them not as much until the pocket became very dry. Imagine, I thought the dry pocket was a consequence of too much water. I'll make the holes in the pot, hopefully that will help. Thanks!

    Is the length of flower spikes always due to genetics? Or are flower spikes sometimes etiolated, stretched out because of a lack of light? I have some plants that have seemingly too long flower spikes with small flowers at the end. Not sure if it is my growing conditions or the orchid variety.

    I have this yellow Oncidium that has shriveled up pseudobulbs, but i dont really know how to water it. Now during the winter i keep a 19-20 degrees in the room and water my orchids every second week, its fine for all the other orchids but i dont know if my Oncidium can handle this schedule, i also dont know if its appropriate given the low temperature. So, which is it, more or less?

    I have some sort of phalenopsus (however you spell it) orchid. It’s around two months since I bought it on a log mount , a couple of it’s leaves are wrinkled, no dead around the crown and I water it as frequently as the other orchids I have outside, it is in shade with gaps of sunlight, maybe it’s stress? Why?

    Thank you for the video! It's very helpful. I was wondering how I should water my new NoID orchid that looks like it might be Oncidium or hybrid, I never saw a similar looking flowers so I can't ID it, but the psb is similar in shape to Oncidium's psb. Now I know what to do :)
    What about Miltoniopsis orchids - should I water them the same way? Also, how can I figure out if my tap water is too hard for my orchids? What are the signs?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 років тому

      marian e if you can upload a picture to photobucket or join orchidnature forums I could try to ID it for you, I need a picture of the flower. Miltoniopsus need to be watered the same way but they want loads of air humidity. About the hard water, interesting idea well, you can leave a little water in a saucer or a glass to evaporate and see how much residue is left behind. Or you can purchase a TDS meter or hardness tester from Calgon :) or a Gh tester from the aquarium shops :)

    This was great. I just repotted my oncidium and was wondering when and how I should water it next. I did not add sphagnum to my mix. Would it be wrong to repot it again soon and add sphagnum to the mix? Is it bad to repot an orchid more frequently than once every year or two? Thanks for your advice.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  7 років тому +1

      Hi, well there is always a risk of staling the more frequent you repot, sometimes you can be lucky, other times it can lead to the demise of the orchid. If you repotted it now try to see if the medium will work. Water it whenever it approaches dryness, it is important for the orchid to have moisture. Just observe the medium :)

    I have 2 oncidium twinkle orchids. I'm watering them 2 or 3 times per week. Would it be safe to put them in self watering pots? I was told that orchids can't be in self watering because they get too much water. This makes no sense to me when I see orchids in vases of water. Why would self watering be worse?

    Hi Danni. You always present your video's so nicely. and clearly. the sound is fine. I didn't hear the workmen. I bought an Oncidium a few months ago But Have no idea what kind it is, I have tried to research it and came up with quite a few names . Brassica Cambria Beallara and Miltassis, They all have what looks like the same pseudobulbs, How can I tell which one it is, It hasn't flowered for me and there is no new spike, the old one was cut prior to the seller sending it to me So I have no idea what the flowers look like. I think I will probably have to wait for the flowers but I thought I'd ask on the off chance that you might know.
    Oh And did you get a chance to look at the photo's I sent you of my rotting phal ?

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  9 років тому

      Andrea Soilander Hi Andrea, these are 13 cm pots, just a slightly big larger than your normal 12 cm. I only find these in Hornbach, but for the main part my Onci's are in 12 or 13 cm pots. The big ones are in 15 cm pots :)

    Great vid as always! However, quick question! :-) You say the orchid should be watered just before the media is completely dry? Mine is potted in a clear pot with bark/perlite and I can see the moisture level in my pot, it seems to move down as the media above dries out.
    So in my case would the ideal time to water my Oncidium be when this moisture level is about an inch from the bottom of the pot? I.e. an inch of the media from the bottom of the pot is moist, the media above dry?
    I'm asking this question as you said in the video if you have a coloured pot, stick your finger in and if its dry then water. If I did this then I would be watering way sooner than if I followed the above method. Argh I’m so easily confused!
    Thanks
    Mitch

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому +3

      +Mitch Lee well this is why I make the extra ventilation holes, to try and balance this difference :) ok I would water the entire pot when the bottom is almost dry, but I would spray the top with some water whenever it gets very dry. The problem is that Oncidiums do like moisture and the roots at the top, especially if they are new and growing, might stop growing due to the lack of moisture. You can also add a layer of moss on top to maintain a bit more humidity, but I would suggest to make some ventilation holes on the sides, particularly towards the bottom of the pot, when you next repot this orchid to balance out this effect.

    • @mitchlee3724
      @mitchlee3724 8 років тому

      +MissOrchidGirl Cheers! I reckon my roots have stopped growing on top as thier green tips have dried up - I will give your solutions ago, they sound logical to me! :-) Thanks again.

    • @MissOrchidGirl
      @MissOrchidGirl  8 років тому

      +Mitch Lee good luck, I suspect the root tips just dried up due to the lack of moisture, with Oncidiums I do like to place a layer of moss that I keep more humid, this really helps new roots.

    My sharry baby has shrinking bulbs but I keep a constant moist and fertilized. The roots are in a good state and it has no acordeon leaves, could the shrinking be because of the 2 new shoots, one is almost mature but the other one is still young. The noise was not a problem.

      Flávia Almeida It depends, sharry babies naturally have some ridges on the psb, it might be normal for them. If the ridges are very fine, like wrinkles, it is dehydration, if they are pretty big, and not fine, they are pretty normal for this type of Oncidium. You can upload a picture to photobucket and share the link in a comment so I can take a look :)

      MissOrchidGirl The black dots on the leaves are natural for shary babies in Brazil, they develop as the leaves grow due to being exposed to brigh tlight.

      Flávia Almeida It doesn't look that bad to me, those ridges are pretty natural, as long as the new growths develop normally, the root system will form and feed all the bulbs, I wouldn't worry.

    • @MissOrchidGirl

      +npigwnl yes, just water your oncidium when the media is almost dry, don't let it dry for too long.

    My late grandmother had numerous Dancing Lady orchids mounted on bare trunks of dead trees and they were standing in the middle of her garden where they receive direct sunlight. She watered them twice daily, once in the morning before the sun comes and once in the afternoon after the sun sets using only her garden hose with her thumb stuck in it's spout to create a spraying effect. She had them growing since my mum was a child and they never had any issues and always blossomed well. Now that I have my own orchids to take care of I have never been able to "train" any of my orchids to grow under direct sun without me watering them frantically and taking them back in when it gets too hot. How could she have done that?

      Hi, there are too many factors at play to figure out exactly what is going wrong :) first there is the temperature, then there is the location, then the natural humidity, then even the water quality. For the most part orchids cannot be grown in full sun, that being said there might be locations where the temperature is too low for sun to cause damage, or winds are very strong so the leaves never get hot. So don;t worry about it, rarely does perfect conditions outside without hassle happen ;) also keep in mind, your eyes back then were different, you did not see as many details as you see now, you were not as critical then as you are now. So you can see many new things and figure out when an orchid is stressed now, while back then you might have just seen the pretty flowers ;)

      +MissOrchidGirl That may well be... Come to think of it, her garden was surrounded by giant mango trees and winds coming in from the nearby ricefields kept it cool in there. The whole neighborhood was atop a hill so it would always be breezy. I just adored how her garden was so lush back then especially her orchids. After she passed away my aunt gave away all the orchids and used the garden for vegetables so I have never been able to observe them carefully now.

    Where can you get that kind of orckid?

      David Henderson The orchids in my videos are purchased from my local garden stores or from the online store Schwerter in Germany. Finding them will depend on your location, each country or territory has its own shops.
