I watered mine only by spraying it two times a day. Just with a fine mist bottle. And it has been doing great for 6 months. I didn’t know it needed this much water. Surprised it’s still doing well!
Hi Danni. I just got another Dendrobium "Frosty Dawn" orchid at a discounted price - it looks very thirsty but has a nice new growth and the beginning of the new growth so hopefully I can bring it back to full health. Thank you for this video, I will make sure it soaks for a while.
JR Photon I think it will be just fine, don't worry if it will look sad for a while, when the new root system takes over he will undergo a major change in looks ;)
Hi Danni,I'm so happy you did this video, I just bought my first nobile, And a dendrobium berry oda, And I can't wait for them to arrive, You are such a fountain of knowlegde on all these orchids, you fast becoming an encyclopedia of orchids
Hi MissOrchidGirl!!!♥️ Thank you so much Ma'am Dannie for sharing to us this very useful Video on the Care of Denrobium Nobile Orchids💕 I learned a lot from it💕 see you on your next awaited and very informative videos💕 Bye!!!🥰🥰🥰
Great video, all your advice on this type nobile Dendrobium are on spot. I have one and it does wonderful in full bark. It grows taller canes every year, even after geting stressed by a repot. Old canes got all plump again once the new ones finished growing. I feel my Phalaenopsis, Oncidopsis and Miltoniopsis in full bark don't enjoy that medium as much as the Dendrobium does. Especially the Nelly Isler in full small bark, that little thirsty monster sucks the medium dry in one day. Next repot it will try medium bark with New-Zeland sphagnum moss.
Familha Gaudir yes indeed, anything that has Miltonia or Miltoniopsis in their parentage will be a thirsty beast and does well with a little bit of moss added in there ;) Phals usually do good in bark but again it depends on environment :) you just have to take into account the orchid's specifics ;)
I am new to dendrobium nobile. I’ve had mine for almost 2 years. It was GLORIOUS last year with just tons of gorgeous sunset colored blooms! Now it is February 2nd and the blooms are already forming. Is this normal? I live in Las Vegas and winters here are cold! This year it has been VERY cold for us with weeks of freezing at night. We keep our house on the cooler side (66°) Again my question is, is it normal for my Den. Nobile to be in bloom this early? Thank you for your help. I enjoy your videos so much!
Hi..I just love this bit of info. I've been given an orchid that was a new shoot. It has a few leaves and two thin small cane shoots....will check out yr vids...by the way yr nail polish shade is stunning...beautiful ❤️
This is a very helpful video, thanks a lot! I bought a dendr. nobile three weeks ago. It is out of bloom now, and has started to grow new canes. It's November now, so what do I do? Put it into a winterrest? Or keep it warm, water it, and let the new canes grow properly, even if it will not bloom next season? 🤔
I left a message on another video about my Dendrobium having the black spots mold, but roots look good according to your video! But have black mold on them! I reported as I had just bought it was packed tight in sphagnum moss took my an hr to get it all out! Wish I would have watched this video before but didn’t have Leica beads anyway. see if you can see details in video I left it in! Thank you 🙏🏼
Trying to take care of my first nobilis, i am in the south hemisphere, autumn here. I put it outside because its cooler. One leave is turning yellow in one of the new canes. Worries that will happen to the others. Any suggestions? Thanks
OK so I bought two from the supermarket last week. I have killed orchids in the past from overwatering. I took the small plastic pots out and didn't soak but just ran water through the pot and drained and popped back in.
I started soaking my dendrobium for around 10 mins a day. I'm in the Caribbean it's extremely hot, beating sun. The orchid loves it all, so I water almost everyday so the canes don't shrivel. However I accidentally left her soaking for almost 2 hours. I am terrified she will die. Absolutely terrified and I am sad she was my most successful one
Purchased a den nobili . It finished blooming . It is in a dark green plastic pot that is not an orchid pot. When should I repot it? It is still 90 degrees here in Oklahoma in September. I have had it 2 months.
Hi Danny, I have a Dendrobium Sukhamongkol. Its look a like of Den.Nobile, same leaves. Its first time for me to have this kind of Dendrobium. Lately its leaves been yellowing started from the tip. What is usually the problem and what should I do? Please help, badly needed your advise. Thank you
some could say the decorative pot of that dendrobium is too tall and there's less air circulating on top of the plant soil... what do you think? I have one dendrobium which had rotten roots and now I'm over-conscious about any detail like that...
Thank you - that's a timely video! I guess I was torturing my new Dend.nobiles, because I was watering them once a week like the rest of my orchids. They look miserable, all wrinkled with droopy leaves, but I attributed it to the stress of being repotted twice in less than a month during the growth period... (I've no idea why some of the leaves started to turn yellow though, it happened to a couple of Encyclias as well) Now I know that the poor girls were thirsty all the time :( I'm sure they feel quite grateful while enjoying a much-needed soak. It would be great if you can find a moment to make a video on how to mist different orchids. Do I mist both leaves and media, or just the media, how often, and what works better - mornings or evenings? I have a lot of Cattleya seedlings now, they don't seem to be doing well. I was told that I have to keep humidity higher than usual, and try to mist them often. I wasn't told how exactly I'm supposed to mist them though, so I just make sure I get the top of the media and aerial roots if they have any while leaving the rest of an orchid as is. After you told me to avoid getting the new growth wet to prevent rot I'm trying to stay clear of it as well. I mist them and Encyclias, and Bulbofyllum ambrosia (it's in a wanda basket atm) every morning - they seem to try up rather quickly for some reason, even though it's not too hot here yet. I must be doing something wrong...
marian e Hi, to be honest I don't usually mist orchids, I might shower them in the hot part of the summer :P with seedlings the best way to increase humidity is to provide a more water retentive media, like sphagnum moss, or a mixture with moss. This will keep the roots hydrated and also provide a halo of humidity to the orchid, though ventilation is still needed. When misting just spray in the direction of the orchid from a distance of about 30 cm, no need to spray undersides. It's not the most efficient thing but I guess it might work. Do this in the morning or noon to let them dryout by night time. All orchids potted in vanda baskets will get almost nothing from misting, best way to deal with things is to soak them, roots absorb and retain more water than you think in the velamen, a mist doesn't give them enough time to absorb water, 10 minute soaks is what you are looking for, again if they are potted in a basket with no media. I might make a video on orchids in baskets soon :)
Thank you! I guess it's time to repot the seedlings again... They're potted in bark right now, no moss whatsoever, and I was thinking about giving terrarium a try. I'm not sure if orchids would like that, but it's supposed to help with humidity etc... video on orchids in baskets would be great!
marian e I think a terrarium would be great but just make sure it is ventilated with a fan, if it's not you'll grow molds instead of orchids :) seedlings usually need more moisture in the media because they don't have those large psb to store moisture, but just remember ventilation is a must!
Hi Danni, again thank you for all your knowledge in caring for these orchids and sharing them with us. I have a dendrobium royal princess that is with me just about two years since I had it. It bloomed once with one flower last year and this last 6 months to now 08-01-17 all the leaves has fallen. The canes are still nice and plump and there are three canes and I see one tiny nubbin on one cane so far. What do you think? will it grow leaves and so on? Thanks
Hi Dani. I have a question for you. I recently purchased Epsom Salt as I have noticed my orchid leaves are sort of blotchy but I'm not sure how to use it with the orchids. Can I mix it with the fertilizer? Thank you!
Stephanie Gradzki Hi, yes I mix it with fertilizer as well, I dissolve a teaspoon in about 10 litres of water, the recipe on the internet is a bit confusing so I'm staying safe, because the fertilizer already has some Magnesium added. I use it about once a month.
Hi ,is it ok to plant dendrobium in crushed rocks since we don't have potting medium in store. Which fertilizer is suitable. How often should spray. Spray the whole plant or the roots only. Thanks
Hi Danny,I ve a dendrobium bought two years back.Last year there was a new growth but no blooms. This year I can see a tiny new growth.I keep watering it. I ve kept it in coconut chips medium. Please let me know how to make it bloom
Hi Danni, I just got my first nobile, so pretty and fragrant!!!. It's in full bloom and it has a new growth, should I water it only when I see the bulbs shrivelling, if I understood well? Or just let it be with out any water, I'm a little paranoid I don't want the flowers to die fast because of my negligence, I want them to last as long as possible.
Also I forgot to ask when is the best time to repot this orchid in inorganic media? I use a mix of hydroton and grow stone which is kind of similar to seramis, that's the American version.
I picked up my first dendrobium nobile yesterday (it's in bloom) and I noticed they used a mossy-dirt like combination as the media. I'm very tempted to re-pot this in regular bark media, but I don't want to destroy the blooms. Any suggestions? Should I be patient and wait for all the blooms to fall before re-potting?
La Divina well if the canes look ok and overall the orchid looks ok you can wait a bit more, I don;t think the flowers will last a lot, so just keep an eye on the orchid and don;t water until the media is dry.
I just got a Comet King Akatsuki in full bloom. It´s in coconut-fibre media, not to my liking. Thank you for your question, I´ll wait with repotting into bark, as the blooms are just too beautiful and I´m afraid to stop the plant from blooming when I repot at this time. On the other hand I don´t want to be late with repotting, as rootgrowth is taking place now.
Hi Danni, It is March in Los Angeles. I have been using the soaking method to water my Dendrobium. Would you recommend just running water through the pot? The two biggest canes look healthy, but I have a few smaller canes that are growing, but are dried or brown at the top. I would appreciate any tips or thoughts. Many thanks! :)
Hi Danni, I bought a D. Nobile two months ago and I could see that it was in growth mode. But its roots were cut (as almost every orchid I get...) and maybe the change in environment caused that some of the canes went dormant (lost their leaves, developed that dry white cover and so on). I didn't want it to 'go to sleep' because I want it to grow roots, so I placed it where it could receive full sun, poured water on it all the time and sprayed foliar fertilizer on it every week, and I think that it already got the message and stopped shedding leaves. The canes that went "dormant" now have some bumps although I still don't know what they are (I hope that they're keikis, I need roots!). My questions are: is it possible that Dens that are going through some stress become dormant? and, do you have any advice to encourage root growth on D. Nobile orchids? Thank youuuuu!
Antonia Orchids Hi Antonia, leaves falling from Den Nobiles are very common, it's pretty normal because somewhere in their parentage they have some deciduous den species traits ;) doesn't mean they are going dormant. New growth is indication they are not dormant. So now you can resume the summer care and watering just like in this video. Careful with fertilizer, too much and keikis will appear, and not the ones you want that appear at the base, but the ones on the cane that can deplete the orchid. Just water it when media is almost dry and fertilize normally, with the new roots that come from the new growth the old canes will plump back up.
My Dendrobium Nobilii is turning pale and has a few yellow leaves. How can I get it healthy again? Also, it has one single bloom that just came the last few weeks.
Hi Danny thanks for this nice informative video on Dendrobium Nobile!!I just wanted to ask you about some certain things on dendrobiums.I love den orchids and I have few of them in my collection,in my place the temperature, humidity are just perfect for dens, they generally do very well in my place.I got few dens on around October last year...they were blooming, done nicely, but after that I don't see much of the blooms as well, instead they seems busy producing baby plants around them!I was not sure if I was doing ok with them or not...two of them having shrinked canes like you show in this video..three of them are having few black dots on leaves! Please let me know what I should be doing to get them make flowers again...though I don't want to rush them but still who doesn't want to see pretty flowers..lol greedy us!! :) Love you.. Puja
teetir1981 well first of all make sure what type of den you have, nobile or phalaenopsis. Nobile dens will bloom only once a year, after a winter rest and you can check the description to learn about it. The canes that go shrivel no matter how much you water might be cause by a root problem so, check to see if you don;t have some rotting roots. Let me know more once you figure out what type of dens you have.
teetir1981 well then they don;t need any winter rest, just the same care all year round. Bright light, water when the media is dry and fertilizer is appreciated. The main factor though is light, they do love very bright light. Also these dens are prone to black spots, ventilation will prevent them but they seem to appear every time there is a lack of ventilation or temperatures go too low, they are warm growing orchids, even hot growing orchids.
Hi Danny thanks for the nice reply...I did forget to mention one thing about the potting media, one of the old nice big pink lady Dendrobium I'm having he's residing on coconut husk and coir media as I bought him from the Orchid store and he's having most of those evil black spots all around comparing to other Dens.(He's too big to handle and the pot is also bigger)Do I need to change media for him?As you suggested about sphagnum moss and bark chips I changed the media for other Dendrobiums I'm having and they look happy it seems. With love, Puja
teetir1981 well to be honest I hate coconut husk, but that's just me :P my troubles started with the coconut husk media, I cannot generalize but I am biased :) if your other dens are doing much better in the other media than yes, switch it and see how that goes. It might be the media it might not be, usually those spots appear when the media is infested with some sort of fungus I noticed.
Hello Danny. Thank you for this information. A friend of my sister new i love orchids and gave me a slip from her Dendrobium. I wasnt sure what kind it was but from ur previous video i was able to tell that it must be a nobily. I'm trying to understand if they will produce flowers in winter or only spikes for summer? reason I'm asking is because I have slowly started getting mine ready for a winter rest and moved it to a colder position. however since doing that for a month it's it flower bumps/buds forming on each side of the Cane and we in June. should I still keep watering it and while in flower stop for winter rest?
Do you have a video about dendrobium phalaenopsis? Im a newbie with caring orchids. Just happen to have seen my moms orchids but its been uncared for. Leaves are gone and its look like hopeless... i could really need a good info bout it. Hope to hear from you soon.
Hi, can you tell me if I should cut off canes that have flowered if new ones are growing from the bottom. One of the old canes has no leaves at all and the other has just 2 leaves at the top. I don't know if pruning is advised at all really. Thanks in advance.
What is the max temp that this type of orchid can have? I’ve thought of keeping mine outside in the summer where it will get lots of sun and warm weather, but it is very hot and dry during the summers where I live (100+ F ) and I don’t know if that will be too hot.
Hello! I just got Dendrobium and Moon orchids! However, I live near the equator so there are no seasons here. Should I water/fertilize just as you say? Or do it all year long? Thank you!
Hi Danny, my dendrobium nobile that I purchase is in bloom and got it for 3-4 weeks now is it okay to repot them or do I need to wait until all blooms are done. Thank you
Danny, Thank you for your video. I have an dentrobium yuridarma nobles. I followed what you told me that left them in low degree (30-45F). Now, I saw two new buds at the nodes, but I am not sure those are buds. So, Danny, I should start water them since they have a buds, but how often should I water them? I stopped water them since Halloween, now I saw the buds. Would you please tell me what I should do and how often to water them to have a bud instead of a keikie, please? Thank you Danny
+Thy Do Hi, well my opinion is that they already know if they are buds or keikis so right now you can start to water, but bring up the temperature as well. Water just enough to keep the canes plump, not like summer time. Let the orchid tell you when it needs water and bring the orchid in a warmer place now :)
Hi Danny! I love your channel, it's so informative. However after watching your videos I desired for an orchid and bought one 5 months ago. It is my first orchid and think it's a D.Nobile. Till now it has given out a new stem and has got 5 leaves on the new stem. But after that it stopped growing. Is it normal? I'm from India and monsoon is going to end here. Kindly help so that I get interested in growing more of them
So I do have some questions, my Dendrobium nobile is still growing while at the same time it is forming flower buds. The plant also bloomed (it had a small blooming period back in November,) those buds finished and then 3 new flower buds opened up around Christmas. The blooms from Christmas are much bigger than the earlier blooms. The plant while it is suppose to be dormant has some canes that are just finishing their growth from the spring. The tips still have new leaves coming in. While some older canes are showing signs of buds forming all over them. I’m so confused. Do I limit the watering and let it go dormant? Do I start watering? I usually put this orchid outside during the summer. It has bloomed in the past two years during mid summer for me. (Those times there was a cool spell during the summer where at night the temps dropped to 15 degrees Celsius which is abnormally cold for a Canadian\ Toronto summer night.
Hi! Danni , I have just bought myself a dendrobium orchid from the nursery, but it's in a coconut chunk media , so I would like to repot it. So I was wondering wether I could put it in a bark ,charcoal, brick and moss .Pls advise . Thanks.
Deepak Rubdy well the type of media depends on your environment. If it's a very humid environment go for something less water retentive, like bark, charcoal, leca, lava rock. If your environment is pretty dry you can benefit from sphagnum moss or a mixture of bark and moss. Whatever type of media you chose, make sure that it is airy and well draining :)
Today I purchased a dancing lady and two dendrobium , one with a light green bloom the other a dark maroon with light green combination but the petals are twisted , like a curley ribbon , but they were potted in a coconut bark and soaking wet . I had to repot them so I did it in a media you have suggested , hope they survive , but thaks for your advice anyway.
Great video, Danny!! I think I quit on nobile type dendrobiums, for me they are too big and not attractive when out of bloom. haha! But this is great information nonetheless and it's making me think about the growth of my other orchids and that I should pick up my fertilizing! One side question- what video editing software do you use? I am trying to find a decent one at the moment.
Thanks!! I am going to probably buy a somewhat good camera and some equipment, and I want my videos to be up to snuff :) Yours always look very wonderful, but I suppose the subject matter makes it even easier haha!!
***** lol actually my vids could be a heck of a lot better and better edited and so on.. but if I do that I would post rarely, take up a lot time to edit and right now it's not worth it and also it would take away from the friendly attitude so, I guess in this hobby it's better to keep it simple. I cannot compare to how much other youtubers spend on editing and all but I don't think it's that necessary either.. maybe in the future I'll make some more artistic stuff, it just has to worth the time and money lol
Oh I think your videos are just wonderful, and your 10,000 subscribers probably agree! Your videos have nice color, crisp video/audio, you make clear points and they are well organized. I don't think they need much improvement! Then again, we're all our own worst critics, aren't we? :)
***** yes indeed haha we all want to make documentary quality videos :))) PS: a tip for when you will want to purchase a new camera, look at reviews and try to pick a camera with a very good focus, the only reason I chose my camera, apart from being super easy to use and quite small, is that it had tons of good reviews about focusing, focuses very intuitively, fast, doesn't defocus, does macro to the extreme and that's what you need with orchids really to get that crisp image without too much messing with the settings.. however mine is crap at night hahaha :P
I noticed that the first one you watered the old canes were a little bit wrinkly. Mine are too even though the new growth is growing fast and healthy with lots of new roots and I water abundantly. I gave it a good all-night soak but they didn't plump back. Maybe it's normal for the older canes to get a little bit wrinkly after the blooming is over. Have you noticed that with your dendrobiums?
John John the first one was recently purchased and repotted and had to cut away most roots, he was worse but is getting better now so I can't ask for much more, the second one is a better example, he is now super plump again ;) some dens are indeed more wrinkly, like the ones with slender canes, think it's a genetic issue, depends on the parentage, but these thick cane dens should be plump all the way.
MissOrchidGirl I cut a third of the roots too when I repotted it a couple of months ago. That must be the reason. I think when the new canes mature, the whole orchid will be rehydrated and plump back up once again.
in this video we learn that dendrobiums shrivel very fast, maybe overnight. do you have any information on how fast oncidium and cambria pseudobulbs might shrivel?
Hi, they can be quite the same, depends how fast the medium dries and how humid the environment is, the slower it dries, the slower they will show signs of dehydration, but if the drying occurs fast and the air is dry it will show signs next day or so :)
Hi Danny, I recently saw in your channel that about a year ago you made a video on your banana seed. How it is doing? Could you make an update video on it? or is it just died, so you decided to not to make videos on it anymore?
Hi Danny! I stopped watering my Dendobrium nobile on Halloween, like I usually do, but the new canes have small buds already! =S Should I start watering again? I usually only start watering around Valentines Day because that it usually the time the buds appear. Thank you! Love your videos!
+Ana Rosa hello Ana, well let the orchid tell you :) maybe due to some weather changes this year your nobiles actually will bloom sooner, as the buds will grow you will see the canes shrivel more and more. Water when the canes will start to visibly shrivel. This can be an indicator on how often they need water as well. But right now you can increase temperatures as well, don't keep them in the cold. If you are sure those are buds you are seeing, then your nobile is pretty done with his rest ;)
+MissOrchidGirl Hi Danny! Thank you so much for the quick answer! After I wrote this message I saw your videos about flower spikes and got my answer in part 2, I was so relieved when I saw that your nobile also has buds now! =D I live in Portugal and the weather is looking more like spring than autumn! I have almost all my orchids with flower spikes! =D Thank you!
My dendrobium noblie was in bloom last year when I bought it. It hasn't bloomed for me since but I have about 4 keikies. What did I do wrong do you think?
I have 2 dendrobium. The first one is a Maui Sparkle Valley Isle Giant. The 2nd one Is a Oriental Smile Butterfly. I would like to Know what type of Dendrobium they are if you are familiar with those and if they need the same care of the dendrobium nobile.Thank you
I did some research and I find out the Dendrobium Oriental Smile is a Nobile type and the Maui Sparkle is not a Nobile type ..I think I saw a picture of that one but I still not sure what tho of Dendrobium is.
Hi Danny, my dendrobium nobile is blooming right now. You have mention in your video to fertilize every 2 weeks during summer. What about if it is still blooming on the summer . Do I fertilize it or I will wait until it finishes its bloom ?
+Carol Cheung Hello, I think your nobile is a bit off season :) you can start to fertilize after the blooms fall, it is important when the new growths start to grow from the base. When the orchid is dormant or flowers it is not so important to fertilize.
Hi Danny , thanks for the reply ! My dendrobium is in bloom and at same time there's new shoot at came out from the bottom ? You mean I need to fertilize it ?
My nobile the main bit ( the bit the holds the leaves and looks like bamboo ) is now turning yellow, clear and shrived. What does this mean?!?! Please help i dont wanna kill my plant - im new to all this!
JR Photon Hi, yes it is good and quite advisable, if he is very tiny use a dilute amount, maybe 50% than the recommended dosage just to be sure the roots won't get burned.
Mine is clinging onto 3 quarters of a day coconut shell...inside a laundry basket with river stones I'm the bottom. Just throw a bucket of water over it , 20 Minutes later throw another bucket of water over it
Hi! Your videos are really informative and easy to understand. I just started caring for orchids as a new hobby. I bought a dendrobium phal ( I think its a dendrobium phal based on the flexing the leaf test you mentioned in another video). Is there any difference in caring for this particular type of dendrobium when compared to the nobile type? Thanks.
Hi, yes there is :) this Dendrobium doesn't need a winter rest, it likes intermediate to warm conditions all year round. It can tolerate lower temperatures as well, but it's not ideal. It light bright light (no direct hot sun) and water when the medium just became dry. Pretty much that's it :)
Hi, normally this type of orchid receives a difference between summer and winter, for this reason we are trying to imitate a cooler and drier winter and we try to replicate what it will experience in its own habitat. I think in winter time, or when the new growths have reached maturity, it is a good idea to stop fertilizing and let the orchid tell you if it needs water or not, by observing the canes. If they shrivel visibly, then it needs some water. If not, they can be left dry a bit more. Lower temperatures are supposed to help with flower production. so if you could provide a cooler environment when the new growths reached maturity, I think it will help with flowering. Just observe how the orchid will perform in your environment and see if you can make a sort of difference between summer and winter. Hope ti will bloom for you :)
Sean Chen it might affect the roots yes because winter time might be colder and more humid so water will not evaporate fast, also the orchid will not absorb it that fast thus, like any other orchid, roots will suffer. But it will definitely promote keikis especially if you fertilize during the rest period.
Mine too Danny !! Is it so bad ??? I've a question ... It loose al the flower now ... and 2 new cane started to grow (+keiki in old canes) I don't like the media it is potted in .. can I repot it now that is in growing season ??
Hy .. first time asking some thing .. why water is so important for him ? If you forget somehow 2 day so you in trouble .. so same time why then thy donn,t love ny Moss ? As well some thing strange .. how thy can stay without ny water in winter rest ..? So stressvie orchid :-) .. please help I have few same orchid but I never stop watering in winter as well :-( .. but thy fine . Thanks in advance .
+Tracy Nastiuk Hi Tracy, in time they do lose their leaves and look a bit bad, that is normal no worries :P older canes will lose all their leaves in about 2 years since maturing :)
+Tracy Nastiuk no, mine is quite old :) if you think your orchid has a problem you can send me a picture to maybe see if there is anything wrong. just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
What is the orchid to the right of the dendrobium? Looks like a cattleya maybe. I have one that looks the exact same but it will not tolerate Catt light so I have no idea how to care for it. I got it unlabelled and it's never bloomed making it really hard to ID, but the foliage and pseudobulb look exactly like that one in your video.
+Jessica Kelly Hi, yes that is a Cattleya :) well if it doesn't seem to like strong light, just place it somewhere more sheltered, there are Cattleya hybrids or species which cannot tolerate that strong light, they are not as common but they exist :) so let the orchid tell you what it needs :) may I ask why you think it cannot tolerate strong light? does it get burned? or does it get a red tinge?
Yes, it burns very easily. I picked it up thinking I'd care for it like my other catts and I immediately burned it, the leaves burned so bad in the same condition as my other catts that I almost lost the plant, even the sides of the pseudobulb burnt and it was only 2 days in that area. I moved it to a much more sheltered area, phal type light, the leaves still blush from that level of light but don't burn so I know that's the most it will tolerate. As for watering it likes to be much more wet than my other catts too. Doesn't seem to need near as much air around the roots as my other catts. I generally have very good luck with catts, but this one hates Catt conditions so much it's hard to wrap my brain around which made me wonder if I was wrong about the type. I've had it for 4 years and almost killed it a few times. Right now it's getting phal light, potted in sphag and getting tons of water and it's never done better, I'm so confused, I have one part of it in sphag/ bark getting frequent water and another half in full sphag getting as much water, the one in full sphag is doing better. Hmmmm maybe one day it will bloom and the flower will give me an idea of the parentage
Hello! I have been watching your channel for a while now. Your orchids are beautiful. I also have nobiles in my collection, still learning how to properly grow them. Mine though, their new young leaves are drying just as soon as they emerge. This happens with my Oncidiums as well. What is causing this?
frzzlfry66 no not really, they store nutrients at the end of the growth to feed the flowers, since they don't have continuous growth they should be better at storing nutrients that other orchids :) I use the bloom booster starting from the middle of summer and continue until september when I cut fertilizer altogether.
MissOrchidGirl Ah, OK... that makes sense. I recently acquired my first Dendrobium, and I'll have to make sure I remember to switch to the bloom fertilizer without blooms being there to remind me. :D
It's important to stop fertilization and flush the medium well for the rest period or you might trigger keikis instead of flower spikes. Misting the canes during the rest period can also cause keikis to grow.
Familha Gaudir careful with the word spike, this orchid doesn't produce spikes :P the den phal does, but the den phal doesn't need a winter rest ;) it's easy to confuse the 2 ;)
I view nobile type Dendrobium as producing very short spikes. Maby this comes from language of influence? In French ''hampe florale'' (flower spike?) is used even for Cattleya. Is there a better-fitting English word? True, phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium don't need rest and love warm temperatures.
+Evangelos Voulgaris Hi, I don;t own this orchid so I am not sure, but from what I read it seems to not take a proper break, just a reduced watering schedule. Here is more info on it orchids.wikia.com/wiki/Dendrobium_trantuanii
Hi danny I keep al my dendro in a mixture of sphag, soil and little amount of coir but they dont seem to rot but healthy instead anyway can I have one of your dendro nobile keiki sorry for asking Bye
FISH&BIRDS Whisperrer well I guess whatever works for you but careful with watering and ventilation :) I don't usually send orchids because of the border crossing issue and also I am dealing with spider mites, I don't think you want a spider mite invasion ;)
MissOrchidGirl oh its ok dani if you cant.i dont mind.you have a spider mite infestion on your orchids right and where do all the mites come from cause I have beendealing with orchids for years and no pest or otther except virus
I watered mine only by spraying it two times a day. Just with a fine mist bottle. And it has been doing great for 6 months. I didn’t know it needed this much water. Surprised it’s still doing well!
That's very helpful and that's my first dendrobium nobile. Thanks a lot for all the input !!
+Carol Cheung My pleasure :)
Great timing, Danny! I'm in the process of researching this since I recently acquired one. Thanks!!
Susana1024 my pleasure :)
Hi Danni,I'm so happy you did this video, I just bought my first nobile, And a dendrobium berry oda, And I can't wait for them to arrive, You are such a fountain of knowlegde on all these orchids, you fast becoming an encyclopedia of orchids
Rosemary457 awww thanks Rosemary, I'm glad you like my videos :D
Hi MissOrchidGirl!!!♥️ Thank you so much Ma'am Dannie for sharing to us this very useful Video on the Care of Denrobium Nobile Orchids💕 I learned a lot from it💕 see you on your next awaited and very informative videos💕 Bye!!!🥰🥰🥰
The easiest dendrobiums - from my point of view. They flower so easily.
Gardening at Douentza yes they do, but for some people in warm climate they are absolutely impossible orchids :))
UK ok
Great video! Dendrobiums are my favorite! And it's always great to see a refresher course! Thanks for posting!
Joseph D :D thanks for watching!
And what about in the spring season.?
What do we do then? Water them or not.?
Do we see that season as summertime.?
This is a very helpful video, thanks a lot!
I bought a dendr. nobile three weeks ago. It is out of bloom now, and has started to grow new canes.
It's November now, so what do I do?
Put it into a winterrest?
Or keep it warm, water it, and let the new canes grow properly, even if it will not bloom next season? 🤔
Can you believe I bought my orchid and it was in soil 🤔
I can belive. I have seen a lot of dendrobium (white) in garden soil( in natural )
Thanks, great information, and great video.
Would you please give some information about Dendrobium Lindleyl orchid? Thanks
Thank you
Should I go ahead and cut off the new growth kiki because the roots pass 6 inches now
I have a question about dendrobium amabile some say they don’t have a winter break but I am not so sure… are they different? Thank you
some could say the decorative pot of that dendrobium is too tall and there's less air circulating on top of the plant soil... what do you think?
This was very helpful & detailed explanation. Thanks. Can u plz similar for Venda & Phals
Thanks
So much help you are so much help to me thank you thank you❤
Thank you for sharing. I really like these shares🤗🤗🤗🤗🤝🤝🤝👍👍👍👍❤
Hi Danny,I ve a dendrobium bought two years back.Last year there was a new growth but no blooms. This year I can see a tiny new growth.I keep watering it. I ve kept it in coconut chips medium. Please let me know how to make it bloom
I live in kerala here temperature is always moderate and its raining here so should i need to water it
Hi Danni, I just got my first nobile, so pretty and fragrant!!!.
TheFloatingflower. It sounds like it like the coconut fiber
Hi Danny do you own spathoglottis ground orchids? If you do pls make a video about spathoglottis orchid care....
Hi
Where can I get the clear plastic pot shown in your video please?
I have a dendobrium with black canes but full of eyes from bottom to top but I don’t know what to do with it I am scared that it dies what can I do
When should i repot a new plant which has started growing new shoots? They are in the same medium since i purchased
MissOrchidGirl Thank you very much! I will try to adjust the fertilizing routine better ^^
MissOrchidGirl how often do you fertilize?
My denrobium was bought for me in September it is now November & still in full flower no sign of bwinter rest period happen get yet advice please
Will shrivelled canes come back to normal?
Love you..
Puja
teetir1981 well first of all make sure what type of den you have, nobile or phalaenopsis. Nobile dens will bloom only once a year, after a winter rest and you can check the description to learn about it. The canes that go shrivel no matter how much you water might be cause by a root problem so, check to see if you don;t have some rotting roots. Let me know more once you figure out what type of dens you have.
Hi Danny...yes they are all Phal types like the canes throw out spikes for flowers and flowers looks like Phal.
teetir1981 well then they don;t need any winter rest, just the same care all year round.
With love,
Puja
teetir1981 well to be honest I hate coconut husk, but that's just me :P my troubles started with the coconut husk media, I cannot generalize but I am biased :) if your other dens are doing much better in the other media than yes, switch it and see how that goes.
Thanks for responding.
Hi, can you tell me if I should cut off canes that have flowered if new ones are growing from the bottom. One of the old canes has no leaves at all and the other has just 2 leaves at the top. I don't know if pruning is advised at all really. Thanks in advance.
Hi my dendrobiums the leaves are opaque, it doesn’t have that intense green
What can I do to keep it healthy
Hi dani when is a good time to repot a dendrobium noblile?
What is the max temp that this type of orchid can have? I’ve thought of keeping mine outside in the summer where it will get lots of sun and warm weather, but it is very hot and dry during the summers where I live (100+ F ) and I don’t know if that will be too hot.
Hello! I just got Dendrobium and Moon orchids! However, I live near the equator so there are no seasons here. Should I water/fertilize just as you say? Or do it all year long?
Thank you!
M high
Is a dendrobium kingianum the same way with watering? I water once a week . She is a young plant. Just at blooming size.
If the stem shrivels, will it un shrivel once watered?
Hi Danny, my dendrobium nobile that I purchase is in bloom and got it for 3-4 weeks now is it okay to repot them or do I need to wait until all blooms are done. Thank you
Danny,
Thank you for your video.
My dendrobium orchids leaves are turning yellow. Please help. What shall I do?
Hi will the this Orchid grow in akadama or Bonsai soil? Thanks.
Hi, not sure what those soils are like, so I don't know if they could work well, sorry!
Kindly help so that I get interested in growing more of them
Thank you so much
So I do have some questions, my Dendrobium nobile is still growing while at the same time it is forming flower buds.
Would these like self watering in clay pellets?
***** I'm using sony vegas, if you have a mac moviemaker is the way to go I think :) I think that's the name lol
Thanks!!
I am going to probably buy a somewhat good camera and some equipment, and I want my videos to be up to snuff :)
Yours always look very wonderful, but I suppose the subject matter makes it even easier haha!!
When i have to use growing and blooming fertilizers for dendrobium nobiles. please help.
Good information thank u
Vytautas Poška the seed didn't germinate, think it was a bad seed :(
Thank you!
+Ana Rosa indeed, this year was very warm for us too, that's why my nobiles are in a hurry :) all is normal don't worry ;)
My dendrobium noblie was in bloom last year when I bought it. It hasn't bloomed for me since but I have about 4 keikies. What did I do wrong do you think?
+Teri Ratiu hi, maybe you did not provide a cooler winter rest. Check out my care video, hope it helps :) ua-cam.com/video/0jlJbl7npOk/v-deo.html
I have 2 dendrobium.
The first one is a Maui Sparkle Valley Isle Giant.
The 2nd one Is a Oriental Smile Butterfly.
I would like to
Know what type of Dendrobium they are if you are familiar with those and if they need the same care of the dendrobium nobile.Thank you
I did some research and I find out the Dendrobium Oriental Smile is a Nobile type and the Maui Sparkle is not a Nobile type ..I think I saw a picture of that one but I still not sure what tho of Dendrobium is.
+Carol Cheung hello, you can wait a bit until the blooms fade and then you can start to properly fertilize :) just more economical ;)
Fresh water or rain water ?
My nobile the main bit ( the bit the holds the leaves and looks like bamboo ) is now turning yellow, clear and shrived. What does this mean?!?! Please help i dont wanna kill my plant - im new to all this!
Hey Danny!
Could a sign of shrivel come from repotting a dendrobium?
it also loses its leaves when it becomes long and produce flowers or keikis on its hanging stalk
Hi Danni. Is it okay to fertilize young Dendrobium orchid that isn't at a blooming size yet?
JR Photon Hi, yes it is good and quite advisable, if he is very tiny use a dilute amount, maybe 50% than the recommended dosage just to be sure the roots won't get burned.
Where can you find it ?
Thank you soooooo much.😍
AOS says don't use distilled water for these orchids. Which water should I use?
Which ever water is not too hard 😊 also distilled water is perfectly fine as long as a complete fertilizer is also offered.
@@MissOrchidGirl Ok thank you. Wish me luck lol.
🤞
Hello Dani, I live in Florida where the weather is tropical. Does my dendrobium noble need to rest during the winter.
What happens if you keep watering it? Will that promote the keiki production or cause root rot? Or something even worse...?
Sean Chen it might affect the roots yes because winter time might be colder and more humid so water will not evaporate fast, also the orchid will not absorb it that fast thus, like any other orchid, roots will suffer. But it will definitely promote keikis especially if you fertilize during the rest period.
MissOrchidGirl Ok thanks :)
THANK YOU ... My stardust firebird says thank you
Giovanni Orchids Killer uh, from all nobiles, that one is the only one who doesn't like me :P
MissOrchidGirl Why Danny ??? O.o O.o
Giovanni Orchids Killer he doesn't like me at all, makes keikis like a mad person.. errr orchid :(
Mine too Danny !! Is it so bad ??? I've a question ... It loose al the flower now ... and 2 new cane started to grow (+keiki in old canes) I don't like the media it is potted in .. can I repot it now that is in growing season ??
Giovanni Orchids Killer yep you can repot now :)
Great video Danny Dendrobiums and me don't mix well lol
Growing Things that's funny, you got all the ingredients needed in your climate
we do but I have a black thumb with them apparently lol it happens , know what you can grow
Growing Things I don't believe in black thumbs :)))
ok well believe it sister!
Hy .. first time asking some thing .. why water is so important for him ? If you forget somehow 2 day so you in trouble .. so same time why then thy donn,t love ny Moss ?
As well some thing strange .. how thy can stay without ny water in winter rest ..?

Thanks in advance .
Beautiful. Yours has leaves all the way down the bulbs, mine don't. :( Gorgeous.
+Tracy Nastiuk Hi Tracy, in time they do lose their leaves and look a bit bad, that is normal no worries :P older canes will lose all their leaves in about 2 years since maturing :)
+MissOrchidGirl is yours a young plant?:)
+Tracy Nastiuk no, mine is quite old :) if you think your orchid has a problem you can send me a picture to maybe see if there is anything wrong. just upload a picture to photobucket, flickr, instagram, imgur or g plus and share the link in a comment here, I'll take a look :)
MissOrchidGirl I don't think it's unhealthy. I just want mine like yours lol. I have Instagram photos I can share. :)

Where can I get stakes and the clips?
Why is my young ( new growth. ) dendrodium leaves turn yellow
Hi Danny good info I was just wondering when should you switch to the bloom boost fertilizer?
Tamara Previtali I usually do this in the middle of summer for dens :)
Great video!? No blooms for me this year. I will fallow your Nobile plan (0;
Bret Furgason don;t forget about the chill temperatures in the winter rest ;)
Hello! I have been watching your channel for a while now. Your orchids are beautiful. I also have nobiles in my collection, still learning how to properly grow them. Mine though, their new young leaves are drying just as soon as they emerge. This happens with my Oncidiums as well. What is causing this?
So when these orchids are in bloom, you don't feed them with bloom fertilizer, as with other orchids?
frzzlfry66 no not really, they store nutrients at the end of the growth to feed the flowers, since they don't have continuous growth they should be better at storing nutrients that other orchids :) I use the bloom booster starting from the middle of summer and continue until september when I cut fertilizer altogether.
True, phalaenopsis-type Dendrobium don't need rest and love warm temperatures.
the dendrobium trantuanni needs winter rest?
+Evangelos Voulgaris Hi, I don;t own this orchid so I am not sure, but from what I read it seems to not take a proper break, just a reduced watering schedule. Here is more info on it orchids.wikia.com/wiki/Dendrobium_trantuanii
i have den phal but i don't know how to take care :'(.
Hi danny I keep al my dendro in a mixture of sphag, soil and little amount of coir but they dont seem to rot but healthy instead anyway can I have one of your dendro nobile keiki sorry for asking
Bye
FISH&BIRDS Whisperrer well I guess whatever works for you but careful with watering and ventilation :) I don't usually send orchids because of the border crossing issue and also I am dealing with spider mites, I don't think you want a spider mite invasion ;)
MissOrchidGirl oh its ok dani if you cant.i dont mind.you have a spider mite infestion on your orchids right and where do all the mites come from cause I have beendealing with orchids for years and no pest or otther except virus
FISH&BIRDS Whisperrer it only takes one orchid to infest all of them ;)
