- Time to knock the dust and a little more crust off of everyone's favorite half-breed Ironhead. Follow along as we resolve issues with the swingarm chain clearance, and WHAT IN THE *%@# (sorry Mom) are we going to do with these pipes??? We also revisted the handle bars, because... Oopsie!!

just in case you're wondering where a "spiffy dresser, such as myself" picks up these RAD shirts that i found....head over to www.hardaddy.com and look around!!....they've got something for everyone!(even "well nourished tall guys" like me!!)
Came for the knowledge tips and tricks, stayed for the witty Jedi bumpkin charm. I am happily a new member. This is not charity; the knowledge and entertainment are well worth the price of admission. Keep it up Master Joe.
The bike 🚲 is looking good 👍 and don't feel bad asking for memberships because you're making great content with a huge amount of free knowledge that's hard to find on yt.
@@daveettel4750 thanks for that!!!... It wasn't something I took lightly!
That is without doubt the best shirt I've ever seen 😮
THANKS!!!....kinda fond of it myself :)
Thanks Joe

I love the idea of repair instead of replace. looking forward to seeing more videos! keep up the awesome work
@@gohan924 absolutely!!!.... I cannot, CANNOT get behind the idea of " disposable society"....my folks taught me to fix what was broken....
And that doesn't apply exclusively to motorcycles.....👍
Yeah. I worked at a Harley dealership as an apprentice, and they believed in repair instead of replacement whenever possible. That was the opposite when I worked at a Japanese used bike shop later on. I love bikes from all countries, but I learned to take the time to get the life from parts at home, where I needed to save money instead of time. It's worth the time.
So i have an account that i use at home and i have one at work and i always try and give a thumbs up on both accounts so double thumbs up from the big guy . Your doing a great job bud stop being so hard on yourself. Your the man Joe!
Right on! Keep yourself afloat, Joe. Don't feel bad about promoting yourself. You're worth it!
i appreciate it guys!!....sometimes, i have a hard time asking for help.....
damned pride, or some-such......
@@JoeTheMountainJedi I get it Joe but we rely on your knowledge as well as your funny wit so as much as we lean on you why cant you lean on us a little? closed mouths don't get fed and pride is one hell of a mental road block we all face. Point being we take care of one anther when we can.
As alway great video love the ran when parked series
Joe: Yer doin' great things for all us who watch. I, for one, appreciate every tidbit you offer. I even liked the hint not to question Confucius. You know he'll set ya straight and bite ya back on the very next cookie! Keep up the good work, and as always, keep it upright. Thanks, from Yokohama, Japan.
NEVER cross Confucius!!....thats like taking a bath while hugging your toaster!!!
thanks for sticking around brother....it means a lot!!
Hey Joe, Another good video my friend. Just joined your patron group to help you out with these ole pieces of rust, so don't let me down. lol I enjoy watching you fumble around with this ole XL. I have been running old Ironheads for the past 35 years and have taken my 79s (3 of them) down to the frames at least 6 times so I know how these ole bikes tick. Love them - even the crusty ones. Later
i appreciate that sir!!!....."old iron" is kinda my thing, be it harley, or japanese/euro-trash(sorry Jared!!)...a LOT of folks are mind blown when you tell em, that you used to be able to adjust a voltage regulator!!
Love watching and learning from these videos! Great stuff Joe!
i appreciate you taking the time to "share some brain space" with us brother!!
Just FYI , Ewan MacGregor aka Obi Wan is a motorcycle enthusiast in real life. How fitting...
@@MyWillypilly weird how that works out, ain't it??😂
Thank you for taking those rox risers off😅
@@daveettel4750 yeah.....#notafan!!
another great vid joe keep up the good work !!!!👍👍🏍
thanks!!..thats the plan!!!
Thanks for the garage time. I dig the lessons. Funding dictates a lot. I really enjoy what you do here. Inspiring. I made a Cus-toe-may 📷 mount on the bike while listening. It is janky junky and funky
i appreciate that brother!!....janky/junky is RIGHT up my alley!!
When a thought leaves your mind like that its just a brain fart 😂
i tend to think of itself as a tiny little "thought-lemming", and that long, awkward silence is the point where he throws himself off a cliff!!
👍🏻👍🏻
🤘😎🤘
Thank you for all you do.I enjoy all you do.would like to see more on your sons bike the shadow.dont worry about coming with your hat in your hand.what you are doing is good and the good lord works in mysterious ways.keep the faith brother it will work.
the shadow is progressing.....needed to spend some time on barnacle boi for a bit, because i needed to move forward with that project a bit while i was waiting on a few things for the honda!....dont worry, "n00b edition" is gonna be back REAL soon!!
Joe, it's a pleasure to watch your channel. As a ex smoker, I hope that you are smoking Marlboro Reds...
red luckies.....close enough!! lol
Those risers have been bothering me for weeks haha. Glad to see them go.
Keep doin what you do!
@@CurtHoag same here man....it's NOT a reassuring feeling when your bars flop around from PUSHING the bike into the shop!!😳
Excellent vid Joe. Luv your content.
thanks!!!....i appreciate you taking the time to watch!
I never liked those weird bar risers either. They work but just don't seem solid enough. That's me though. I don't blame you for setting up the membership stuff. It's there for those that can and want to help. Things are tight now days and you are sharing valuable knowledge. Good vid
me neither!!!!....them spinning on me as tight as they were just sealed the deal!!
i appreciate it man!!!
You gots yurself a like just for the Creative Spider Termination alone. The rest of the video was just gravy. Repair, not Replace is 100% the way to go... Plus, you can actually be proud of something you built yourself, instead of just throw dollars at the problem. Your effort is appreciated, ol son. Happy Labor Day, Mr. Joe
thanks man!!....he had a "shifty look in his eyes".....all 8 of them!!
@@JoeTheMountainJedi That was purdy clever... A "shifty" look in his eyes... when you scorched his eyelashes off right there beside the Shifter... You are a scholar and a gentleman... I salute you!
Thanks!
Hey brother, thank YOU for your support of the channel 🤘
@@JoeTheMountainJedi - Keep it up my brother. Sharing your experiences and tips is helping greatly in my '78 Ironhead restoration. Enjoy your honest approach.
I had a 3 gallon pancake compressor from harbor freight, it past away after 12 years recently.
As you probably know, crescent is a name brand not the wrench name. The wrench name is an adjustable wrench.
yeah, i know....but i DO have a "crescent wrench" at work thats a, well.....CRESCENT WRENCH!! lolol
Missed the premier, but great video.
@@tattoowho all good man....hell, we almost missed it ourselves 🤣 (we were having BAD interwebs issues!!)
One thing that's worth noting when it comes to people not getting notified of the videos going live is even if you were subscribed and you have hit the notification Bell the automatic setting for that Belle is "personalized". Don't know what that actually means but for me it usually means that it only send me notifications for about 10% of the videos that a channel puts out.
What y'all want to do is hit the notification Bell then click it again and select the "all" notifications option
Bought a 2132 20 years ago (basically same thing)...IR branded though. Love IR's stuff.
all my "heavy use/do or die" air tools are generally IR....they've always done me well
Yeah, time to work on bikes🎉
@@juliancrooks3031 let's GOOOO!!!!
Lmao shit box extraordinaire!! And where there's a will there's a way!! You got this!
@@Hillbilly_Bob_Rides gotta keep on keeping on man!!!
On the exhaust issue 30 minutes in, use a large impact socket 28-32mm and hammer on the exhaust to allow the room on the axel nut. I have done it before when I had a 2018 bike exhaust on a 2009 bike. Along with several older bikes with mismatch exhaust. It works and saves time.
I'm pretty sure you're right about Johan Petter Johansson (the inventor of that kind of crescent wrench, and the plumbers wrench too) didn't speak Polish. 😉
My matco socket holders still great from the 80's...screwed down in top of box. I aint sure how many times I rebuilt my IM510 Snap on Impact......It'll break 1020 truck lug studs. I would stay in my shop working sometimes till daylight, especially if next day was a latemodel race, back in the 80's.....or a dirt drag open outlaW day in the late 80's & 90's.
@@johnnysechrist6313 the old "ingerman" has been a workhorse for me.....I might actually treat it with a freshen up kit here soon!!
@@JoeTheMountainJedi They're great...nascar has always used them.
I have some good electric impacts in 1/4 to 1/2. They really help.
im slowly shifting my daily use gear over to electric....sometimes it has its drawbacks though.....
example....milwaukee 3/8 impact....has a "soft start" feature that will NOT spin out a fork dampner rod bolt!!....20 year old ingersoll impact rips it out so fast, the rod dosent have a chance to spin!!
@@JoeTheMountainJedi my 3/8 snap on is pretty strong. Expensive but effective. I can't use cheaper stuff because I wrench cars and it wouldn't last.
I hate risers. So glad you got rid of them. They definitely aren’t made for a post apocolypse bike
I have GOT to get that shirt !!
@@EcSsAwS link to the company I get these from is in the description ☝️☝️
you sir are great. nothing wrong with asking for help during this strange transition of helping put knowledge out while also working etc. wish I could help out more than just the like and sub and share. either way keep up the fun and looking fwd to seeing what happens next. cheers.
Love to channel! Good stuff! Informative and amusing. But please do me a favor. Please quit smoking. I’m 67 and have COPD and you do not want that. We want you to reach 90 laughing along with you fixing a discarded electric trike! Be well and thanks for sharing. BTW is that the “Dirtster”?
i know, i know.....old habbits and whatnot.....
i have cut WAY back from what i used to 10 years ago!!....and i understand about the copd...have a few family members/friends that fight that struggle....
nope!!....this is "daddy-dirt", the ELDER dirt-sportster mutant!!
@@JoeTheMountainJedi Very good then! Not being preachy! Thanks for the great entertainment!
❤
as always brother, THANK YOU for taking the time to hang out with us!!
Should just move the rear master cylinder a few inches forward on the frame surely you can make it work might be abit more work then machining down the reservoir I don't know I work on cars not bikes🤣
Nope...it's genius...and we have the capabilities to do that...stay tuned...it's gonna be way easier than trying to move it down or forward
crescent wrench aka nut lathe
Had to resubscribe but caught the video. I don't remember having these problems with my 83 sportster
well, lol....this AINT your "typical" sportster!!
Joe love the channel and content. I don’t know if that type of thumbnail works for the casual viewer who may have the video recommended to them by YT.
since a few guys pointed out "shop rag jesus" in the last video, it kinda fit!!.....im picking up what youre putting down though.....
I've sprung a few leaks do to hose clamps 😅
I would love to donate skate wheels if you need them they come in many sizes and hardness!!
Send them to the ride factory...Tampa Florida
actually, turned out what i was needing earlier tonight out of a scrap of delrin, and popped in a couple of 608zz bearings to let it roll plenty free....i appreciate it tho!!
Great video as always. Looking forward to more on tetanus express.
thanks for stopping in for a spell mark!!...gotta "knock the dust off" of Barnacle Boi here, and get this thing ready to get outta the way of.......whatever it is thats "in the way"...lol
Yo, Jedi! Glad you got that damn evil Sith spider! Lol. Tell me, why is the drive chain on the right-hand side? I thought they were left-side drive? Well, I love your videos, and I'm picking up a few tips and tricks! Later, bro!
Sporties are right hand drive, left side brake. Always have been. They're cool little bikes, way lighter and maneuverable. Oh and the exhaust note is more high strung, race bike like. Go git u one.
Basically only harley and bmw have ever used a right side drive I believe...
picture this.....Jared Weems, wearing a tophat, with a monacle screwed into his face, going "AHEM, good sir!!"....lolol
I realised my mistake! I've been watching too many of Shadetree's japanese bike videos! Lol.
When you were in Arkansas did you know of Danny's cycle in Ft Smith?
Good job.on the video. What camera are you using currently? Do you have an amazon wishlist ?
when i first saw that slide i thought you were going to make a slot in it and put your own bolt through the side into the existing bracket making it easier to replace when needed. But then that didn't happen. LOL. i have an ASTRO Super Duty 3/4" Impact, and I have the 1/2" adapter for it as well. it is Model 1515 actually is read CAT. No. AP-1515 the only lable on it is metal on the back side. It was left to me a long time ago. i was thinking maybe it would need attention someday since I also have a Milwaukee modle ap-121 and it has never worked since I have owned it, I cannot find parts for that and that astro one must either be so expensive no one has one that ever let it go or maybe a flop on the market. i don't see how it can be a flop though since it;s pretty incredible, I can't even find one really.
the milwaukee is much lighter and 1/2" i wonder if those are not rebuild able. The astro AP-1515 is still tickin. LOl has some brass parts i don't see of other impacts. i winder if a rebuild of a higher or lower model but still 1/2" would work on the milwaukee?
id thought about that, but it wasnt gonna leave much room for wear on the slider pad, so i went this route.....also, those things arent solid, and the voids inside of it would have made it really flimsy if id have used the existing tab
@@JoeTheMountainJedi I like to save every bit of nylon block type material I can. have you seen the price of that crap retail? YIKES!!!
Is the chain to swingarm clearance due to long shocks?
Basically
Speaking of grips. I always use Avon and riding through the desert 🏜 each year I never see any fading or degrading.
Thanks!
