    Whenever you and Chris are bringing an old relic back to life, it reminds me of the time i was re-building my old '47EL. I bled sweated and cried over every little (and large!) part I hunted down to get as close to factory stock as possible! The bike and I became one! I can't tell you how much I loved that beast! ❤

    I stated restoring bikes in the mid-sixties, an in about '69 scrounged 5 Harley WLA's from a cattle station in Outback Australia and managed to make 2 bikes out of all the bits; an authentic Australian Army model, with SMLE leather bucket instead of the Tommy gun one, and a Civilian one with valenced guards and a sidecar. Lost the lot in a divorce settlement, and am now in my 70's and crippled, and am so depressed that I will never be able to restore another bike, so it gives me great pleasure to live vicariously through guys and it fascinates me to see not only the bikes you are working on, as well as those in the background and all the bits and pieces that I would love to converse about with you ! Greetings from a small town in Rural South Australia !

    • @CitizenSmith50
      @CitizenSmith50 5 місяців тому +5

      P.S. Wrote that before I watched the whole Vid, and it turns out that the pale blue WL seems exactly the same as the one I restored in '69/'70 ,except that I kept the original handlebars and no grab bar on the back of the seat (and, of course, there is no Goulding sidecar)! ! Nearly in tears as it brings back memories of over 50 years ago !

    Watching these videos brings back all the days I spent with my Dad and an old mate of his Jim Forster here in Safety Bay West Australia. Unfortunately Jim died 2 years ago. He was 105 years old and spent his retirement rebuilding old Harley's, BSA's, Ariel's etc. I remember a 42 WLA painted up like the bikes Dad ride in WW2. A 28 Harley, a Harley from the early 30's he called the depression bike. So much history restored to its former glory and I am guessing was on sold by the family once Mr Forster died. I loved that old 28 with side car he named Aunty Jack. On thise bikes I was taught all about compression, firing of cylinders, strokes etc as a kid.
    Love your work fellas

    That transmission is fixable. You need flux (20 mule team borax), an oxy/ace number 2 welding tip, and a pure aluminum bar. You can use pipe fitting flux paste if you want to prep the surface, but as a bladesmith I prefer borax. Put the flux on your surface and heat it with the torch till it melts the flux. Then build up your surface with the aluminum rod. After it is built up you can sculpt it with a flat grinder in a dye grinder the drill and tap it. Don't give up on that gem. I have tigged those cases back together from a complete split and rode them for years before someone offered me more than I liked the bike. The repair I described my dad was taught to do in the army on messenger bikes during Vietnam. I've used it building lowrider cars and restoring old Indian motorcycles. Did it two years ago to repair an engine mount on a yamaha xj650 chopper I built from a box of parts. It can be done. Just a little practice on some scrap metal to develope your touch on the torch. I mean you are already planning to scrap it what will it hurt for you to try. If you are gonna bring old bikes back why not learn the old skills to go with it. Honestly if had the means I would gladly be on my way to show you.

      Here's one for you. I watch a lot of these You Tube videos (can't understand why I don't get anything done) I watch these videos from out there in Pakistan I think that is where they are and it shows these guys welding up engine blocks that have holes busted in them with an oxy-acetylene torch. It is amazing and if they can do it we can do it. Of course they do not waste anything and it is quite educational to see them in action.

    Good morning 🌅, great job guys, France. I am in my 70s , your bike reminds me when I was 16/7, I passed my test when I was 17 , I had Norton and one especially Norton dominator , it was crusty like your bike , I stripped it and rebuilt it but I turned into a chopper , Got back into bakes in the early 90s until 2019 , when I sold everything, and just recently purchased a 2003 Deuce, it was crusty. It wouldn’t run
    properly, just spent the last 3 weeks rebuilding, primer and part of the gearbox, carb , ignition system, all running, ready for a test,
    It is great being back on 2 wheels,

    You guys are living the DREAM. Was in the museum about 20 years back and met your DAD, Kelly and I were amazed at taking the trip back in time that day. The best I can remember your dad had the old board trackers and racers in a circle on display in the center of museum. Was a cool experience. We will be visiting again soon. Bought my first scooter in 77 I think, it was in Starkville MS, I was 17 it was a black and charcoal gray with gold pin stripes ROADSTER as a 17-year-old I was on top of the world when I rode that thing. 27 Harleys later and still have not owned anything older than a 62. Mabey someday but I am running out of time. I enjoy all the content and the passion I see in you guys when working on these old girls.

    Great to see the bike come back to life and the reactions of the passionate collectors... Reminds me of when things were simpler and built to last or be repaired--not just throw away, plastic computers on wheels.

    Круто, молодцы. Очень много информации интересной и нужной. Даже не нужно теперь книгу открывать по регулировки сцепления. Спасибо 👍👍👍🤝🤝🤝

    Glad to see you following your father's legacy. I remember seeing him fire up one of the museum pieces and hot rodding it up and down the road.

    Back in the early 70's I rode a 42 Flathead Harley. Sometimes when the big guys would kick the motor over they broke the rod going through the motor. The Harley was green at first then painted red. No faster than 50 mph was the best ride. I'm 70 now and it would be nice to have another GEM like this.

    Love this one. Reminds me of a DL I fixed 60 years ago. Everything original except the infamous bevel gear generator drive. Had been replaced with a V-belt. Crankpin worn 1/16. Rode it for two years, always reliable. Then went on with more modern bikes.
    But running when I bought it, so no wonder you could get this one going.
